PDANET+ Broke after 4.3 update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

USB Tether and FoxFI hotspot are broken. PDANET needs to provide a fix.
FoxFI bluetooth server can work but very slow and only one connection at a time.
Not good when you have no other internet connectivity possible in remote/rural areas

USB tethering is working for me with the free version of FoxFi 2.14.1. Getting ready to purchase the full-version since I rely on it, but sucks to have to go back to the old-school days of plugging into USB and then sharing the connection out of a PC into a Wireless router, lol. Was previously using Taiseiko's hotspot toggle widget but it's obviously broken now.

Back in my day, we had to get an aol CD with 1,000 free hours of internet to surf the web, which basically meant crude chat rooms LOLOL! (;

Wifi tether, infrastructure mode?

So I currently own a Thunderbolt on Verizon as well as a wifi only galaxy tab and a wifi only xoom.
I also have a G2X on a 2 week trial. I was going to transfer me and my gf's phones over from Verizon.
I have my G2X rooted already and I have wireless tether installed. It works but my Xoom and my Galaxy tab won't recognize it. I'm assuming this is because it's running in ad-hoc mode and not infrastructure.
If this something that can be changed with kernal upgrade or custom roms or will this phone forever broadcast ad-hoc? This is pretty important to me as it's one of my primary purposes for switching to tmobile. (4g in my area vs none for verizon as well as battery life.)
all the 3 version is infrastructure mode the 2 version is in ad hoc. try it out should work not sure yet tho. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I feel like a tard now actually. I'm so used to having verizon I didn't realize that T-Mobile didn't take out the stock android mobile hotspot app.
Does anyone know if t-mobile makes you sign up for a tethering plan to use it? I was able to fire it up and connect both my Xoom and my galaxy tab just fine.. just don't want a suprise in my bill.

Just use it.
If you got error page, you simply add tethering option or just change browser agent (but I don't think you'll get in trouble if you tether with Android tablets).
As long as you have an unlimited data package youll be fine...they have a 2gig & 5gig. Once you go over those limits it will still work, just not as fast as before you went over the data cap. No issues with mine tho, my hotspot works fine with various devices

It's not an app, it's in the wireless network settings. Same place as wifi-bluetooth and all that. Just a check box to turn it on.
Funny story about the wireless tether for root users app.
So when I posted this that it will only work in ad-hoc mode, I found a workaround for my xoom to connect before I realized there was built in hotspot. The built in hotspot works great and it's infrastructure mode, but like my thunderbolt and droid x before it, won't stay connected in my office for some reason.
I tried the wireless tether program and low and behold it stays connected firmly in my office. Must be something about it being ad-hoc because all the infrastructure mode tethering methods I've tried will not stay connected in my office.. must be some intereference or something.

[Q] USB Tether App

Since Verizon will start to charge extra for tethering on June 15th, I am looking for a free app to tether via USB.
I tried android-wired-tether since I have root access, but that app does not work.
I am aware of pdanet, easytether and tether for andriod, but all are paid apps.
If there is not a free usb tether app, what is the best free working wifi one for the droid charge?
Thanks!
I would recommend Klink tether they have a free and a paid version. Its way better. Also the developer of the app responds quickly if you have problems. Hope that helps

I really like "Open Garden Wifi" for wifi tethering. many people really seam to like Barnacle Wifi Tether also.
I have been using PDAnet for usb tether and wireless tether (root) for wifi.
Both seem to have been working good on the Charge.
I used them both with the Fascinate for months.
I just bought my charge a few days ago and recently rooted with the new altered beast ODIN ROM. Is there any tether software that doesn't require a client installation on the tethered computer, or maybe just the phone drivers?

WIFI tether options don't require any software on the client, just a working wireless card and OS that supports Wifi (can't think of one that doesn't)...
Wireless tether for root users is what I use
Barnacle is another free option
I am sure there are more....

[Q] Wireless Tethering Issue

I rooted my phone Saturday mainly for tethering. I use my phone as my internet connection while I'm storm chasing. Well today was a chase day and everything was working great until I hit edge network and then i couldn't get any data on my laptop. It showed a local connection, but no internet. Now I haven't tested this since and I have 3g at home so I can't test it there. Does anyone know if this is how it is supposed to work and if so is there a work around? I'm hoping it was just a fluke and will work fine chasing the next couple days. We have my wife's iPhone 4 using mywi as a backup just in case though. Should I be able to use edge using the wireless ap in Android?
Thanks
Are you using the stock tethering?

Yes I am using the stock tethering program and have the tethering manager froze.
you should be able to tether on edge but it will be slow, maybe slow enough to get an error. also i have had issues where i need to reset the radio on the phone by turning off wireless networks and turning it back on.
Ok thanks for the info. I just wanted to make sure it was possible and I didn't have to adjust a setting somewhere that I was overlooking. I will be using again today and tomorrow so I will get a chance to test it out some more. I'm very aware of the very slow speeds on edge but it usually works for updating radar information ok. And Opera web browser also works very well over edge with the turbo mode on. Thanks!
Tested out the tethering a lot the last two days and have came to the conclusion it will drop your tethering connection with two or less bars of edge. It will auto reconnect as soon as my signal improves above that level. Still a little frustrating.

Wifi Tether/Wireless Tether for Root Users

The only version of wifi/wireless tether for root users that works is the most recent experimental build:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk
From the options menu, you will need to change the device from auto to Samsung Facinate.
This is the only configuration that worked for me. The stability is questionable. I did have to reboot a few times to get wifi working AFTER I turned off wifi-tether.
It did seem to help that I kept wifi on before I started wifi-tether. I don't suggest turning off wifi, then running wifi-tether. Under this scenario, I could not get wifi-tether to work.
YES, I understand I can use the free official version that's built into the phone, BUT I have no intention of seeing a line item of $20 on my wireless bill AFTER the promotion ends next month. VZW might/will just assume you used it once and you got the service until you call to cancel. No thanks with that situation. Going to avoid that like the plague. I would not put it past VZW [insert any phone/cable/cell company] from this dirty little trick.
I have even considered calling VZW to have the promo code taken OFF my account. I just don't trust these companies.
On a side not, I am running ED2 with the voodoov4 kernel.
This method can use the 4G LTE connection for the tethering, right?
I did not do a speed test on the other device, but I am pretty certain it said 4G. I actually would have noticed if it was 3G or 1X because it would have stuck out as my house is covered in 4G love

I'm having a hard time getting this to work with altered beast. Has anyone else found a solution for altered beast wireless tether?
I have this app from my Fascinate and I'm posting this right now on my laptop that is being tethered from 4G from this app. That should clear things up.
I got it working. As a matter of fact, I am tethering at about twice as fast as my previous phone.
I live on a farm where our 3G is spotty, and I'm getting 1.5 Mbps as opposed to 0.6 Mbps previously. I can actually stream stuff now! Very happy.
Try Wired Tethering instead
I can't say much about Wireless Tethering, 'cause I'm really not that interested in it: The battery on the Charge gets drained so fast when downloading 4G data without the WiFi stuff, why add an additional drain?
My philosophy on this is that you're probably going to want to plug your Sammy into something to charge the battery while surfing, so why not plug it into your laptop and go with a Wired Tether instead? It probably will get you faster speeds, to boot.
If you want to try it, I recommend "Easy Tether". (The free Google Code root user "Wired Tether" isn't working right now).
E.T. is a lot cheaper than PDAnet, and personally I think it has a simpler user interface. It doesn't require root access, either. The free version gets you unlimited access to http: sites, but restricts https: sites.
Food for thought.
I use Wireless Tethering 2.0.8, not 3.0.
Been using it since I picked up the phone and rooted it. 2.0.8 works perfectly for me. Ad-hoc not Wireless signal, but still works!
I download a 3gb HD movie in about 15-30 minutes, depending on the speed. That's gotta be LTE 4G speed. I'm pretty sure 1.5mbps cannot download 3gb in that time.
i ran wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9 on my alteredbeast last night and it worked fine for me. not in a 4g area.
The wireless tether option is the only reason to root in my opinion. Plus its free! When I work overtime details where I just have to sit in the cruiser, wireless tether is the best cause I can watch movies and surf any sites without the city's server blocking me.
I've got a couple rooted Charges..anyone know what wireless tether is the BEST? I know of Barnacle and Wireless Tether...and have used both, neither stands out above or any different really than the other.
I am using barnacle and it is working very well no FCs or issues so far.. just stated a few days ago but i am getting full speed.
my guess is that at some point they will be charging by the usage to stop this practice.. but until then this works great.

The Mobile Hotspot application has stopped working on the Samsung Droid Charge starting on 6/2/11 Posted 06/03/2011 Issue Description Customers have reported that the Mobile Hotspot application has stopped working on the Samsung Droid Charge starting on 6/2/11. The device was launched with the Mobile Hotspot (and Mobile Broadband Connect service) offered at no additional charge to customers for a limited time. Due to a software bug on the Charge, the device has now disabled the Mobile Hotspot. Customers who now try to launch the application will see the screen momentarily change to a black screen, and then return to the menu with the same Mobile Hotspot icon.
Resolution Plan Samsung has found the root cause and has submitted a software upgrade (MR2) to Verizon Wireless. We are currently testing this software and expect to approve it and release to customers as an "over-the-air" upgrade by June 9 end of week. Once the upgrade is installed on the customer's device, the Mobile Hotspot will resume working at no additional charge until the promotional period expires. Work Around There currently is no known workaround for this issue. Isnt verizon plan on suspending accounts that use 3rd party apps to enable tethiering?
I used to use 46GB of data a month with my imagio and nobody ever said a word, and im already up to 16 with the charge (unfortunately still on 3G). If they are supposedely suspending accounts they would have tore me apart by now. I think once 4G gets established nationwide the carriers are probably gonna change there rates on data, but until then im going to keep paying my 30 a month for UNLIMITED data and use as much as i want

I can't even get tethering to work on my laptop (let alone Galaxy Tab 10.1) through the Droid Charge, with either Barnacle nor Wireless Tether. Did you have any luck?
Can anyone report if this is working in infrastructure mode, or is it just ad-hoc?

Unlimited tethering

I see that root is pretty easy now. I had a Note 2 on verizon with unlimited data. I am going to blow through my tether limit soon. So my question is besides samsung pay (dont care) does Root break anything. Because I only need it for unlimited tethering. And with the current way to bypass the data checks does it break anything on the phone?
Short answer is no. It trips knox fuse. But, you can still use private mode, fingerprint scanner etc. Loving being rooted
Pdanet maybe?

Do you guys get unlimited Hotspot?
If I download anything on my computer then it uses Hotspot data.
But if I play Xbox live or netflix then it doesn't
When I was using KK 4.4.4 I install VPN software on my laptop and Tmo cant see the agent string on the browser and I keep on surfing free. Now its not working anymore with LP.

I've found that PDAnet+ works w/o a hitch w/ USB tethering; using native hotspot tethering hacks are intermittently successful depending on the settings and ROM.

+1 for pdanet! I actually got throttled last month after using all my tethering data and I was able to tether unrestricted at normal speeds via USB with pdanet.
Another option that works with all Roms I've tried is WiFi Tether Router (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter). When tethering my laptop I use a user-agent spoofer and choose safari on Mac as the user agent, seems to have worked well so far.
