This will be the umpteenth request for help I've made.
I'm going to be as brief but detailed as possible.
Sch-I535.
Using GSM band with Straight Talk AT&T.
Stock roms works fine. Custom stock also.
AOSP/AOKP/CM roms flash fine and work fine but won't let me send sms.
I can receive sms fine.
Calls, data and mms work fine.
APN settings are fine.
Signal is fine.
I ALWAYS clean flash.
Using latest CWM touch.
Tried with recommended gapps and no gapps. No luck. I've odinned back to stock, rerooted and reflashed. No luck.
Tried battery pull, fix permissions, factory reset and reboot. No luck.
I'm at my wits end and I abhor the thought of remaining tethered to stock roms or their custom counterparts.
I am BEGGING for help.
If you need any more info please ask.

Have you tried 3rd party texting apps like go out handcent? And are you using hangouts or stock sms. What about uninstalling sms app and reinstalling stock or custom one from the theme section. That's all the help I can offer. Not too knowledgeable on all this but they may be solutions if you didn't already try them
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Tried Go sms and hangouts. Tried uninstalling.

I've never encountered that. Did you try searching the forum or maybe a Google search? And when did it start, and for how long? Also which versions of aosp/cm have you flashed
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Tried searching. This is my 5th thread I think. This started when I flashed PAC Man rom. I've tried PAC Man, Slim Bean, CM 10.2 and 11. No cigar.

You really shouldn't create new threads. I know it sucks when you don't get very many responses but the Moderators would rather u bump your original thread than create a new thread as that just gives them more threads to clean up. With that said I am gonna take a look at your log. I want to help u since I know you have had this issue a while :/

The SMS rils are trying to send as CDMA, not GSM. This kind of info would have been helpful in the dev threads you were posting about roms not working.
Was this a Verizon phone you brought to StraightTalk or did you get this phone intended/coded for StraighTalk? And yes, that matters, especially with non-stock roms.
It's verizon phone I brought to straight talk

I'd have to dig into the stock rom to see what's different that allows you to use GSM for calls; obviously, the stock rom allows for a GSM switchover.
Here's the issue: 99% of the people downloading the Verizon S3 roms are on Verizon and therefore on CDMA/LTE. The only way to get your phone to work properly with these roms is to get a developer to modify the RILs to allow a GSM device to work with the rom. That's going to be a tough sell, since they have little incentive to do so, unless they also have a GSM S3. You can PM/talk to some devs and see if they can help, but many don't know how to code RILs, which is why they're using the CM repo... it's far more technical than just compiling a rom (I speak from experience with the old Droid 2 Global that had a GSM switch).
Hope that helps.
I still don't understand how I can receive SMS but can't send. Calls work fine and MMS does too. Wouldn't those be messed us if what your saying is true?

Possibly. The issue lies with 'ImsSms'; it's set to CDMA for sending, rather than GSM. That could be something in the rom with the network settings applying to all but the SMS settings, or it could be related to the RIL and how its coded.
I haven't seen any other GSM users post about their experiences with these roms, so I don't have much data to go off. I assume you've fiddled with the 'Preferred Network Type' and set it to 'Global' (in Gummy)? In Other roms, it's choosing the LTE/GSM/CDMA choice. That would activate GSM if it were available to the phone, whereas if I choose that on the Verizon network, it kills my connection.
I tried that but it might not hurt to fiddle with it again. I'll try and report back. Bring another logcat with me.

That's actually not weird at all if you have a data connection.
On Verizon CDMA, sms goes out over the 1xRTT frequency, but mms goes out over EvDO or LTE; on GSM, sms goes out on the GSM frequency, but mms goes out on the HSPA+ or LTE.
Now, if you don't have a mobile data connection, there's something seriously wonked.
Ah okay. Well I still cannot send SMS. I played with the preferred network settings but nothing changes. Any suggestions? Isn't there a jar file that controls sending through gsm and CDMA? Couldn't I delete the CDMA jar file and the gsm take over? Is that dumb? Lol
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
I don't know if it's that simple. I don't think deleting the CDMA jar will do anything other than prevent you from using CDMA. Have you seen this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069850

So the question is: What's different in 4.4 roms from stock that makes it so hard to connect to gsm....?
Hey, so have you tried flashing a 4.4 rom built for an AT&T device? If you need GSM, those builds will have GSM device files and since they have the same hardware, that *might* actually work.

OK Guys and Gals, Here is what is going on with the radio issue. No Matter WHAT radio combos you may be using. As some of you may know by my earlier posts I live in a huge 4G network and never get anything, but 4G and (3G only for a min on boot) This is why I didn't have ANY issue's until I got curious and wanted to try something. On our tbolts, if you try to make a call while in 3G the 3G will drop out until the call is over. I went back to froyo, got pissed and went strait back to GB (doesn't matter what Rom as all the dev have clearly stated) when I did go back to GB things were tight as usual. worked like a charm. I used it as I normally would and everything was fine. upon a self induced restart, before my phone had a chance to obtain 4G (still in 3G) I decided to make a test call to see if the 3G would drop. It didn't. Quickly after I ended the call the phone booted in to bootloader. Thank God I had removed the GB RUU because I don't have a card reader to remove the RUU. I forgot to mention I do have the latest Rom Mgr and was able to get into recovery and simply reboot. After that reboot I would get to my home screen, but this time the 3G only would come up and then reboot. Time after time of rebooting I tried other things such as toggle radio to just grab 4G, then the phone rebooted again! upon the next full boot I quickly moved the original froyo radio strait to the sd card. And yet another reboot. This time I got a Rom Mgr error and noticed that Rom mgr was no longer flashed!!! I flashed it real quick because I knew another reboot was on its way. Rom mgr flashed and I told it to boot in to recovery. Thank **** I flashed Rom manager because if not I would be in continuous boots like the unfortunate others. Once in recovery I Realized that I had told my phone to go in to recovery via Rom mgr. and if I did a restore, the phone would have booted back up with my froyo rom but with the GB radio! so I told CWR to just reboot so I could tell the phone to go into recovery via the pwr restart option (thus not restarting after I flashed my froyo recovery) Once recovery of my froyo rom was complete I used ADB to reboot bootloader and SUCCESS! Bottom line you can not make a call while on 3G with any of the current GB radios, you gotta be quick, Make sure ROM mgr is actually flashed!!!! and hopefully can dump the froyo radio on to your SD card before an inevitable reboot happens! and have some ADB knowledge. I'm certain this is whats going on! People make a call while in 3G and its all down hill from there. So dont bother with telling radio settings to stick with one band. Once this happens, there is no turning back. Any questions PM me. I'm glad I tried this out before Vaca tomorrow with a FUBAR Tbolt
Hope this helps developers somehow. Good luck!

I ran a GB rom and radio for over a week set to only 3G and I am in a STRONG 4G area. Made many calls and had no issue.
*edit: Correct me if I'm wrong but your data (3G) drops when in a call, when set to 3G only, due to the fact that you can't have simultaneous data and voice. That is what 4G (LTE) is providing. I open and close the browser a couple of times or toggle airplane mode and it comes back.

Not my understanding...
I've put mine in 3G only and was still able to use voice and data.
Voice uses 1x...
Not until Voice over LTE will that be accurate...LTE is data only at this point.
Turn off data and you can still make a call, send and receive SMS/MMS.

I have requested my unlock code from T-Mobile. I have my Straight Talk SIM card ready to go. Now, my question is:
Does having Root and/or custom roms affect the process of unlocking a device?
I just want to make sure ahead of time so I can make the process as smooth as possible. Thanks in advance!
I believe you just need to be on a stock ROM, then it'll always be "activated" no matter what you flash.
So root makes no difference?
Doesn't make a difference.

Well I ended up having to flash a stock rom to get it to work, but my phone is unlocked. which led me to a weird question:
I put my friends Straight Talk sim card in my phone to be sure it was working, and the phone had service and data on it right away. I was able to make phone calls, surf the web, send texts (I didn't test out the MMS). I thought adjust the APN settings was a must for all that stuff to work...? I didn't change a thing. But then it got me curious as to what my APN settings actually were. But when I went to click on the APN button under settings>mobile networks, I get the horrible "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" error. I haven't seen that since I stopped using Wifi calling. Now it looks like I can't change my APN if the need arises. Anyone know of a loop hole to this?
Does 3g/hspa work for you sorry to change subject but can't find info on this subject I'm thinking of moving to this phone from the thrill 4G but in afraid my straight talk Sim won't connect 3g since it's TMobile phone and straight talk is Att towers to best of my knowledge
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
Straight talk runs on a variety of frequencies from its parent companies depending on what device you have. AT&T devices are equipped for Straight Talk's 3G network because they operate on the frequencies. T-Mobile devices operate slightly differently. However, adjusting the APN settings correctly to transmit date via AT&T's service is supposed to to more or less resolve the issue. Unfortunately I can't seem to do that. It may be something to do with the rom I'm using, but I'm not sure. I'll have to text it out.
that would be awesome I'll keep checking back to see your results
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
If straight Talk uses Att's 3g frequencies then you won have 3g on this phone. This phone does not have the proper radio frequency for it.
Edit: look at my answer in your other post.

So I've been having the same battery problems as everyone else. I'd like to disable LTE on my ATT 727. Knowing that I could force protocols on prior phones, I went looking for the options to find none. So I decided to flash CM10. I learned after flashing CM10 on my device that the radio needs to be flashed also. I've tried flashing a few different radios but it appears that they simply aren't flashing. Recovery goes through the motions but the version never changes. I've read rumors that I need to do a subsidy unlock but I haven't seen any real confirmation of it. Is that true? A carrier subsidy unlock must be done to flash over the RAT locked ATT radio? I would expect that to be in the noob listts with radios if so.
Baseband version: I727RUXLF3
Kernel: 3.0.49-cyanogenmod-g5756af3
Recovery: CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4 _sk8_
Thanks in advance for the advice. I really want to like this device. Hopefully between wakelock and LTE we can get it useable.

This is the same for pretty much all recent at&t smartphones. Last 5 I have had have had that option blocked. There is a possibility if you pull the sim card out, boot phone back on, use the dial code listed previously to set it and then put sim back in you might get the desired results. Maybe replace it?
If this is a new phone that you haven't tampered with, I suggest that you exchange it. New phones don't need any change in settings to connect to LTE out of the box.
Maybe it's a hardware problem. Did this problem just appear out of nowhere? (maybe after the update)?

DONT BE A NEWB
I have had an OPO since 2014 november, and since then, i have had install many various roms. But since august and i installed official cm12.1, my phone stopped working properly. While the phone is just idle on lte, when i get a call, i see the antenna change back to 3g but i dont get the call, and couple seconds later for the caller, call goes to voicemail. Or when i try to make a call on lte, most times, it doesnt connect like it cant properly work on 3g networks. When im on 2g everything works fine. But obviously i dont wanna get stuck on 2g. Also, i have tried probably every possible related thread and method, including going stock, going cm11s ( first official stock rom), installing different recoveries (twrp 2.8.6.0, 2.8.7.0.5 materialized, philz) and the modems and basebands even with fastboot. And nothing seemed to worked for me. So i was just wondering if i did mess up my phone or my phones modem or/and antenna. And how would i know for sure? Btw i also tried different sims. No luck.

I'd try to restore it to completely stock:

I tried this one. I also tried to go back to 11s as well. Same thing every time. I can only have phoning experience on 2g. On lte works great for the data but 3g is hit or miss. I wonder if there is a way the set up the phone to go between lte and 2g for incoming/outgoing calls bypassing 3g option. I would be contempt with that.

It sounds like you need to do some research in here:

I did check that, also tried couple of them radios. I'm on the hybrid one. Problem still exists. I'm almost convinced it's hardware problem like somehow the modern is failing. Thanks tho

Try another sim card
If your network requires to change your APN, this fix resolved my radio connectivity issue. I would check with provider if you are on correct APN setting. Your phones default may not be same as your provider APN.

If that fire doesn't work, look thru below thread, especially LTE issue.

I have also tried that. Im just curious if there is a particular hardware issue with the modem rather than software. I think i have tried all the firmwares, modem files, going back stock tricks that xda, and other forums provided. I cant think of anything else.
