Workaround for disabling native tether with 3rd party apps - Moto X Themes and Apps

I have Verizon non Dev on kit kat rooted and write protection off. Nothing I did with any apps like tasker, secure settings or macro droid could disable tether, had to use quick toggles to do it. Being I trigger tether everytime I am in my car I wanted to find a way to get disabling working when I left my car.
I figured a workaround, I don't like it but it works. Basically involves secure settings and tasker or macro droid. I have the task turn on airplane mode, wait two seconds, turn off air plane mode, turn on wifi. Only tested a couple times just now but did work. Just worry that multiple airplane mode triggering may cause radio issues over time. I turn on wifi at the end because almost always after I leave my car I am somewhere I use wifi.

I did something wrong and can't boot right. I was in my phone and downloaded the tether zip. I backed up my original framework-res.apk to my phones download folder. I then copied and pasted into the system/framework folder your modified framework-res.apk. When I did this the phone appeared to soft reboot, then went black. Now every time I try to turn on my phone, it gets to the verizon logo and goes black. I press the power button for 10 seconds and get it to turn on, but same black screen on verizon logo. I can get into the bootloader menu, but ADB does not list any devices connected when in this mode. I am in fast boot mode it appears as fast boot commands work. Suggestions to get my phone booted?

Downloading stock vzw 4.4 zip now. I assume I will need to reroot and redo write protection after doing this, correct?
And if I want to attempt to use the modified framework-res.apk again, I assume now using adb is the correct way to do so, but how do I prevent this boot problem from happening again, since I can't see how using ADB would be any different.

If you flash just the system you should mantain root and if you ran motowpnomo write protection is permanently off. If you loose root you won't be able to reroot until jcase pushes another release.

Pushed System.img, lost root. Gonna at least attempt from scratch using RSD Lite and camera update to try to get root back.

Any update on this? I'm in the same boat as OP.
Update: Using the Xposed method, tasker CAN turn off the wifi hotspot. Thanks!
Update 2: Got it to work...most of the time. I doesn't want to turn wifi back on after turning tethering off, though. I'll keep working on it...

[Q] Is there a "restart" widget?

I find it strange that there's no "restart" feature in Android, and you have to completely turn the phone off and then turn it back on. I looked in the Market for a restart widget but couldn't find one. Does anyone know of one (for non-rooted phones)?
They exist. I think I used one called "Quick Boot". I stopped using it after I corrupted my sdcard once. I guess it was in use when I decided to reboot. I figure the time it takes to do a normal power off on sequence it worth it.
:edit: It does need root. Your phone cant do much without root
If you are the kind of user that wants to add features (reboot) you are going to need root access. If you just want to use your phone out of the box and not add any functionality, dont worry about root
reboot would be a better word to use while searching. There are several apps but all require root. Here is a free one if you decide to root for this feature.

I'm sure "quick" booting and "re" booting are two different things. A normal off/on would be a reboot. Quickbooting is some kind of condensed version developed to not take as much time. I also has negative results trying to quickboot my Captivate, so I haven't tried it again since.

The app "quick boot" I was using has several options including "reboot" and "hot boot". "Hot boot" never worked sucessfully on my captivate. The sd corruption I mentioned happened using the (full) "reboot" option. It worked fine lots of other times so Im not pointing my finger and saying this app will always do that. Just sharing my experience that it is a possibility.

[MOD] NFC for Verizon GS3! NFC Enabled While Screen Off / Locked

***UPDATE***
I upgraded to ParanoidAndroid and had to use a different apk. I don't know who made this one (i downloaded like 10 from xda and tried about 4 before it started working), but here's the winner:
techneesh.com/paranoidandroidnfcscreenoff.apk
*****************
Hey guys,
I searched for hours but could only find reports of people *NOT* getting this to work on the Verizon GS3 (hence the name of the thread).
I tried hacking my stock Nfc.apk using dex2jar & modding the smali files (after looking up the appropriate values to change using decompiled dex2jar classes.dex's nfcservice.java), but after much frustration decided to just go ahead and try the existing versions out there.
By the way, if anyone is looking for how to do this (decompiling/modding/recompiling an apk) with 4.0.4 (and getting the 'bad magic number with smali/baksmali), refer to the comment on May 8th in this thread.
I'm pleased to report that mayhemer's AT&T version (for the SGS-I747) works for us Verizon folks!
You can grab it on his thread here.
I've also uploaded it to my server. Here's a direct link:
techneesh.com/Nfc.apk
I posted this in the Development section because I would really like to encourage devs to work on modding Nfc functionality further. Also, this is a more advanced mod for a system app.
Google Wallet did not throw errors with this .apk (as it did with others), although I have not tested it yet.
NFC reads trigger the nfc tag's function and the alarm/beep, but do not turn on or unlock the screen (while it is off).
Also, I just got a whole bunch of NFC tags in and plan to make some cool products for them... if you have any ideas let me know on my 3D-printing-on-demand-for-xda-samsung-gs3-folks thread.
Note- I am on Bean's Custom Stock R3.1 07/28 (I know, I need to upgrade)
4.0.4, SCH-I535, Baseband I535VRLF2, Kernel 3.0.38imoseyon+, Hardware I535.10
Instructions for apk:
1. Get apk onto your phone
2. Stop NFC (or else your phone will start lagging // freezing after the next step)
3. Copy the apk to /system/app/ with a root explorer and overwrite the existing Nfc.apk (you should make a backup first)
4. Change permissions to match other system apks (rw-r--r--)
5. Reboot & re-enable nfc. Profit. Share your uses.
For zip you should be able to just flash in cwm.

oh man, don't get me started!
think about it - you get to your desk and want to tether / turn on music / silence phone. just tap it on the nfc sticker on your desk. done.
you get into your car and want to enable gps / turn on music / navigate somewhere. tap your phone to the nfc sticker. done.
i have a lockscreen for security and even though it only takes a second to open it still adds up over the course of the day. the ability to quickly do (any) task on your phone without unlocking it or even pressing a button is huge.
for example, I canceled home internet last year when I got LTE but this means I have to turn on tethering every time i sit down at my PC. using a tasker nfc-activated command I can just touch my phone to my desk and it's on. time saving and just fun.
or maybe you are in a meeting and miss a call and want to call them back - have a pre-programmed nfc sticker that will command your phone to set an alarm for (e.g.) 1 hour. tap your phone to it without fiddling /unlocking/interrupting your meeting further.
what really made me think of this is while I was looking for something behind a wardrobe and wanted to turn on my LED flashlight on my phone. how cool would it be to have an nfc sticker (on your keychain? on a sliding mechanism on a custom techneesh.com case on your phone?) that could basically act as a 4th hard button to do a custom function (in this case, turn on the LED flashlight without 1. turning on screen 2. unlocking 3. going to home screen 4. finding LED flashlight app and opening)
and yes, this is for real
I'm trying to get this to work on CleanROM 2.5, with the G7 baseband. I followed the steps correctly, but it doesn't to anything different than the stock NFC
I can still read my tags when screen on and unlocked, but i get no response with the screen off or on and locked.
Triskite, did you modify the .apk from the linked At&t SGSIII thread at all? If not, would it be safe to try the other apk's listed there?
Thanks!

Once i did this, i wanted to see if the screen off nfcmodI747_screenoff.zip works, and it sure does (again, flashed via CWM)!
Don't know if it matters, but i did not disable NFC from settings before i flashed them via CWM.
Thanks again!
Just saying this is as of the moment the most unsafe mod someone can implant or put a nfc tag somewhere to run malicious code on your device. While I do not condone hacking of any sort, I know the possibilties of what these hacks can do from different forums (not naming any).

Yea, I understand the risks and all.
I agree that it is a major security vulnerability for someone that wishes to highly protect their information.
I just wanted to try it for a proof-of-concept kind of thing.
Honestly its pretty quick to flash these via Cwm. I went back to stock Nfc.apk for parties/bars this weekend (Too many people close to me for security comfort), then today I flashed the lock screen version for my school week.
It would be really cool if it were possible to toggle this.

True, but this involves active running processes like GPS which can drain your battery. From my experience, NFC has no noticeable extra drain, not even the screen off modified version. Not to mention how easy it is to use the NFC programming apps versus Tasker, IMO.

Need help with tethering since new update.

T mobile us, rooted unlocked, never put custom Rom on it. I used to be able to tether even when screen shut off, now once the screen shuts off the data stops until I turn the screen back on. Any ideas how to fix this besides leaving screen on?

Bummer.
This actually had me thinking, since google play music is running before the screen shuts off and it constantly draws data, maybe thats why it stays active even when the screen is off. So I am going to have to test this theory by loading a huge webpage on the tethered device to see if you need a constant demand for data for tethering to keep working, I suppose I could just a youtube video.
Edit: My theory panned out and may lead to a fix. This is what I did
1) Turn on FoxFi an make sure screen doesn't time out 2} Tether my Asus Infinity to it making sure the phone screen doesn't time out 3) Start a long youtube video using the youtube app, I tried a 7 minute one. 4) Turn screen off on the phone and I was able to watch the whole video while tethered to my one s
My conclusion is if there is a constant data draw the tether will keep working even when screen is off. So they have enabled a rapid cutoff of wifi if your screen shuts off with no data draw, if there is a draw the data will keep flowing.
Test it out for yourself and share your results, off to try netflix.
Edit 2: Further testing confirms this on my device, This time I used netflix streamed dark of the moon and it continued to allow the tether to work. I dont want to burn my months data out testing this so we need a few more people to try this.
I have the EU rom but I'm experiencing the same issue.
I'm using Airdroid and it stops responding as soon as the screen shuts off. I can confirm that Ready2Mosh is right, since if I turn on the web radio and then shut off the screen Airdroid works flawlessly.
I have never noticed this before 4.0.4 so I'd guess the bug wasn't there. This is a major bug that has to be fixed soon by HTC.
What about 3g connection? Does it shut off too?
Does it do it if you just use the built in tethering app?
I don't think it is really a bug with android per se vs design
that is sleeping the app as backgrounded since screen is off and not being over riden anymore.
You're right. Tethering isn't put to sleep for me.
I can confirm the issue with airdroid and other apps though. I'm going to open a new thread in order not to hijack this one.
I tried airdroid and that works fine for me though.

[Q] Permanent Disable airplane mode option in Custom ROM

I'm working on permanently disabling airplane mode in a slightly customized ROM I'm working on. Essentially, I want nothing to change when a user clicks the airplane mode button.
This is on the Verizon Galaxy Tab 2 (sch-i705).
I'm hoping for a simple solution (i.e. deleting some module) that will disable the functionality behind airplane mode or adjust which radios toggle when airplane mode is enabled.
I'm not sure where to start - right now I'm slogging through an upacked system.img with no success, and haven't found anything in my xda/google searches. Ideas of what files I could remove or modify?
So far I've tried looking through existing modules to see if airplane mode is like wifi (ie has drivers or something that can somehow be removed). It was a longshot, and I didn't come up with anything.
Anyone have any idea what I could modify in the system image to adjust which radios airplane mode toggles?
Still haven't figured this out - anyone have any ideas?

I'm working on designing an educational tablet that can be remotely managed (new content can be pushed, new apps can be added for the students, etc.). The issue is, if a student accidentally (or on purpose) turns on Airplane Mode, I would lose my connection with the tablet and be unable to interact with it, or restore it remotely. Not allowing airplane mode would be an easy way to avoid this problem.
It doesn't seem like there is an easy way to do this though.. I'm trying to sort out whether I could change the radios Airplane Mode toggles, or maybe change the UI so Airplane mode isn't offered as an option (right now it can only be accessed by pushing the power button, because I have access to settings restricted)
Any ideas?
That sounds like that solves your problem to remove airplane mode from the power menu.

Any way to disable access to Quick settings from lockscreen on Stock Lollipop?

I have version 5.0.1 with pattern lock, with the apps Lockwatch & Smart Lockscreen Protector.
But it's useless when anyone can just access the quick settings from the lockscreen and switching off Wifi/Data or turning on airplane mod..
There is any way to block access to this toggles? Or even to the whole Quick Settings?
I can live without access to the flashlight in lockscreen if that a problem..

Wrong section bro, post in Q&A, by the way, why would you bother someone disconnecting your wifi and Bluetooth, they can't turn on 4g and all that things which cost money in monthly plan.
One scenario comes in mind. When you lose your phone and want to use device manager to find the phone. If someone stole your phone, can easily put it in airplane mode so you can't locate it
Wonder why Google can miss this. Just like screen still turn on when on pocket with ambient display ON.
If you unlocked, you can try Cataclysm or N5X. Both has option to disabled it. Hope this help.
Slimlp also has this. Stock, no
Im unlocked, but "clean" rooted (stock rom+recovery+kernel with cf-auto root).
Since google added SELinux at enfoce mod by default in Lollipop (which avoids OTA installing at any state of Root), i'm considring to install a custom room.
But if to be honest, I really don't want to (I hate to mess around with all that thanks the crappy Galaxy S3 I had.. I bought the Nexus 5 in thought I could stay with stock+OTA and enjoy "clean" root+Xposed.. Apparently Google had other plans )
So if someone have an idea to avoid access to wifi/data/aiplane mod toggles from lockscreen, I will be happy to hear.

Anyone can press the power button on your phone too.
Quick access to the radios is useful.
Until 4.2/4.2.2 anyone could just connect a cable to your phone and use ADB to pull everything off.
Don't give your phone to strangers or place in unsafe places.

None of this is possible with a locked screen. Accessing the radios on a locked screen can prevent you tracking it. Sure, like you say, it can be turned off not another issue is accessing the guest account and installing malicious apps and making calls. Bit of a security hole if you ask me.

Not with a recovery lock and locked bootloader. At least my data is safe. Whats wrong with wanting a safe phone? Why have a lock at all if it can be semi-bypassed by quick settings.
You're right though, would be nice of TWRP also had recovery lock. At least we still have philz for now.
But yeah, I can get YOUR data no matter what you do, even after factory reset, but doesn't mean everyone can.
Its kind of like say "dont bother locking your doors because we can break your windows". We all still lock our doors.
I also think that this is a very serious issue.
When I lock my phone I want it to be locked completely not partially.
Have anyone figured how to disable quick access on locked screen (locked with password, pin or pattern)?
And also to remove camera icon?
The only thing i want on my lock screen is to enter my password and see notifications (this is something I am able to do alredy =))
Thank you!
I am hoping on an xposed module

The 'Quick settings' menu can be edited - when the phone is unlocked open quick settings panel and tap and hold any of its icons, you will be allowed to remove or add some functionalities. Just remove 'airplane mode' and 'mobile data'. This way when the phone is locked no one can disable its connectivity.
The drawback is that you can't switch the airplane mode easily even when the phone is unlocked.
