[Q] Speaker Sound (buzzing) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi eveyone,
Just received my brand new Nexus 5 32GB (serial starts with 311K).
I'm not able to have my Win7 access the internal memory for me to copy FLAC music and listen to the quality using Poweramp app so I just used google music and it seems that there's a buzzing sound when playing basically anything.
If it's a known issue, is there a fix?
Otherwise, does anyone knows the RMA process for Australia?
Thanks everyone

Speaker replacement?

Just wondering but since I got my N5 and GF got Moto X on Monday, I can really tell the difference in speaker quality between the two and I use my phone to play music quite a bit. Has anyone just replaced the speaker in the phone? Is it even possible to purchase the tiny phone speakers separately?

OK, so you point me to an old thread that has no real information besides a few people saying they haven't tried it. Thanks.:good:
Your best bet is a pair of external speakers IMO. Otherwise software mods can push the built-in a bit further.

I was afraid of that. After watching a few teardown videos, it doesn't look like just any other cell phone speaker would fit. Seems like a proprietary setup.

If your willing to root your phone then install Viper4Android. No need for any other change. Check out the dedicated N5 and Viper4Android thread in this forums themes and apps section. The difference will be stunning for speakers, earplugs and bluetooth.

Nexus 5 stutters and has audio distortion when using only YouTube

I'm on my third Nexus 5 that has had issues, and every single one of them have had this one. When using YouTube the video is jerky and stutters, and randomly there will be audio distortion and pops from the speaker. This is the third Nexus 5 I've had with this issue, and nothing I find can fix it. I can barely find any info on the internet about it.
From what I can tell it is limited to YouTube. The thing is, my old S2 on 4.1.2 had no such issue. None of my other electronics have any issues with YouTube to the degree this does. I'm past believing it is an issue with my phone(though it might be), because as I said, I'm on my third Nexus 5 with this issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? What are my options in trying to fix it? I've had such a bad experience with the Nexus line I'm close to giving up and buying a different phone. This is driving me crazy.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

App is up to date, and my internet speed is at least 10mbps. I have 30 at home and have the same issues. It does this at home, here at work, and on 4G. But it couldn't be the internet connection as it works fine on my old phone and other devices.
Here's some more info.
Stock, unrooted, stock kernel, 4.2.2. I've been tempted to root and unlock the boot loader to install a new kernel and see if that helps, but I'm not used to rooting Nexus devices and don't want to make it difficult to upgrade to 4.4.3 when its released. Hopefully that will fix this issue, but Google has been radio silent on it so I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

I assume by 4.2.2 you meant 4.4.2
Try clearing data and cache on the YouTube app, if that doesn't help try uninstalling/uninstalling updates and reinstalling/reupdating.

Exactly. It's why I've ruled it out being a hardware issue, because this has happened to two other Nexus 5's I've been in possession of. It's so weird.
I've unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, all the fun stuff. I'm gonna try a new kernel to see if that will fix it.

Hiya,
Im having this issue as well. Some of the videos have disortion and stutters, but its not in youtube app. When I play videos form the websites it happens but, not in all of them. Dont know why some are ok and others dont. Sometimes its really annoying, especially when it stutters a lot in the playedback video. I do not know if its a hardware or a software issue.
EDIT:
Just checked the same video in Android Authority app and in Youtube app. In the first app audio stutters and being a wee bit choppy, in Yt however, everything is fine. Audio is clear, no stutters at all. So I assume its software issue and maybe audio codecs dont play well with third party apps. Also, I dont think there is a solution to this problem.

[Q] [FIXED] Camera sound Nexus 5 horrible after update 4.4.3

Hi there,
Recently i've updated my Nexus 5 to Android 4.4.3. (from stock 4.4.2 rooted)
Every time after updating to 4.4.3 my camera sound is horrible (like it's recording underwater).
I've used zip files (after wiping) to flash without any succes.
When i used my backup of 4.4.2 the problem was gone again. So the hardware isn't broken or anything.
Now i've sideloaded the official factory image (4.4.3) after a full wipe and still the problem exists.
How is this even possible? Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks for helping in advance
PS: i've contacted Google but their e-mail in bad translation didn't help me. They told me to do a factory reset lol

Thanks for your reply man! I really thought i screwed up my phone somehow without knowing it.
Do you know by any chance if there is a way to fix this? This topic was hard to google/search since I only got stuff about the previous camera bug. Or maybe my "tech English" isn't sufficient.
The issue is ongoing. We thought 4.4.3 was going to fix it but evidently not. There are no other real fixes

I never had this issue on previous android versions and I've had my Nexus shortly after the release. I honestly think this is a new bug but I could be wrong.
If there are no fixes I need a new phone or my money back.

The noise cancellation bug has been around since day 1, when I got my N5. Not everyone notices because it acts differently depending on the environment the videos are recording in. It also effects calls.
There's no fix right now. Try and get your money back if you like.

Yes, this is new bug, no discussion. I've made more than thousand vids with my N5 so I'm familiar with "old" sound bug, but this new one wich came with 4.4.3 is much worse than issue from previous one and make my Nexus completly useless as camera.. It sounds like underwater.

It's the same bug alright. I have no doubt. Perhaps it sounds different to you on your phone because they made it worse.
I can say with a strong degree of certainty that it is the same bug though, because the "old" bug you refer to was due to a poor noise cancellation issue. This bug went away for me when I fitted a slickwraps skin that covers my noise cancellation mic. ...and after upgrading to 4.4.3, I still don't have any issues whilst that secondary microphone is covered. My videos are as expected.

It's much worse that it was.. As I said, my Nexus is now useless as digital camera.. Or it was useless, because I've flashed 4.4.2 again.

I think it's a similar bug, but new.

I've sent another email to Google. I'll put the reply here.

But how come it wasn't there on my 4.4.2 or as you described it, wasn't hearable?
I am a music producer. I always use my phone to film my latest creations to send them to friends via whatsapp. Never had any issues. First was good, now it's absolutely useless. I film exactly from the same spot in my studio. There should be a way around to get the sound back from 4.4.2 right? Some custom rom or whatever?
Thanks for all your answers man!

Google Music plays slightly fast with Bluetooth?

CM12 official nighlies, just updated to latest one but this has been a problem since I went from stock 05Q to CM12. Google Play Music plays slightly faster than it should only on Bluetooth..... I have clean flashed twice, cleared cache for app and system and still it does it. Anyone know why?
Is anyone else experience this?
Bluetooth is usually always the problem between CM upgrades..... Not sure why but I've noticed it's the first thing to break no matter the phone.,

Yes I also have this issue with CM12 on my Galaxy S5 SM-G900M. I have it affecting both the Google Play Music app and the stock CM music app. I tried all the regular stuff also (clear cache, full wipe, yada yada).
Seems to be affecting multiple devices I guess.
Also affects me, thought it was so weird but it has always happened with my OnePlus one.

I had a note 2 a while back that had this issue. It was a kernel issue. Maybe try a dif kernel? I'm on CM11 05Q running franco kernel considering there's CM12 support?
I will flash back CM12 and test with a different kernel tonight. Retest Bluetooth audio on my way to work tomorrow and report what happens.
Tried two different kernels with no change. Still having bluetooth audio skip and play slightly faster / higher pitched.
Just an update. I am still having this issue... I clean flashed Slim 5.0 and the problem was still there
Just had a thought, can anyone try to recreate the issue with AwesoePlayer instead of Nuplayer

Turning off Wi-fi during Bluetooth playback worked for some other devices experiencing the problem.
Edit: apparently this has been a reoccurring issue across multiple devices with android.
Same issue with Spotify
I updated to CM12S on my OPO yesterday. Noticed since that music plays fast and pauses every 15 seconds.
Any advice on resolving?
I'm having the same issue on CM12s. :/

There is a bug filed on Jira. BACON-3275
It appears to be almost exclusive to Japanese cars.

Not exclusive to Japanese cars...I'm having the same issue in a VW and across all my bluetooth audio devices in the house. Great phone but Oneplus/Cyanogen is ****ting the bed lately.
A lot of people experience problem with bluetooth, the problem for me is there since 4.4.4. I can't receive phone calls in my car (BMW E39) . At best it connect 15 seconds then bluetooth restart on my phone. In CM bug tracker there is A LOT of complains. I don't mean to ***** but devs need to seriously look into this. Some bug report are from OCTOBER 14.
Patience everyone....

Music players freeze randomly during microseconds.

I have been suffering random freezes while listening to music since the first day.
It happens with mix, music (walkman) players, but not whit Jet Audio. It's very annoying, and don't want to move to other apps.
I think that the problem has to be in system or maybe data partitions, libs, corrupted data... Any idea?
Thanks in advanced.
Solved: Performing a fresh installation with Mobile Upgrade Q, OTA ruined some system files.

My microSD card is class 10 capable of reading every file in a very short time. In addition, in my previous phone (Moto G 2014) i had no issue. It must be software not hardware problem.
Anybody suffering from microcuts while playing music from mix or other apps?
I don't think your card is defective. It seems that the phone does not skip if a higher quality card is used. Mine is sandisk that have no issues, but other users have reported issues with sandisk. It seems that Samsung cards are less prone to the issue.

I trained myself to do a factory reset after applying a OTA firmware update. Not sure if it will fix your issue but it seems to be the next step to rule out any software issue. I no longer do OTA because I'm using the CM ROM.

I use a Lexar 128 GB USB 3.0 microSD card http://www.lexar.com/microsd-633x and have the same problem. It's worse with some players but at least with my fave one, jetAudio, it's a bit less frequent. Still, it's really annoying and I hope there will be a fix soon. It happens more when I use my Bluetooth speaker, but also while using the phone speakers.
It seems software-related since Lollipop...
May be a parameter from the build.prop makes conflict.

I tried JetAudio and no freezes, after restricting media to sdcard1/music folder, try and let me know if it solves your problem.
My favourite music player is music (Walkman) and randomly happens microcuts, my firmware is 010 06.
PD: Can't find where the problem is coming from, is frustrating.
