New nexus build and 4.4.2 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, was contemplating trading in my HTC One for the nexus 5, but decided against it due issues with camera and speakers. However with the release of 4.4.2 and LG refining the build quality want to know if it's now worth the upgrade?

After using this Nexus 5 I didn't feel comfortable with any other device. Yes audio quality is little poor but camera is good, battery life is good, speed of the device is good, so sleek weight less when compared to the rest. I use Sennheiser PX90 headset but still the sound quality is not to the satisfaction. Speaker sound is good but volume is slightly low and limited. Rest Xclnt!. Feel comfortable and happy to own this device.

Transfer speed of large movie files to the phone from computer are much faster and quicker, its a great plus point.
Browsing is really faster compared to others.
Games are so fluid.

Would you trade your NS for G2X?

I was thinking of trading a NS for G2x. Would u do it. They are both vanilla but one has a better camera, gpu, dual core and 4g. The other carries the Nexus Baggage.
God please no
What baggage?

I had a G2X and traded it for a NS. Personally, I'd keep your NS.
While the G2X has superior camera (not by that much), CPU/GPU, external speaker placement, and HDMI out it's not as good as it sounds.
The camera is very marginally better than the NS. Remember megapixels isn't everything.
The CPU/GPU is superior on paper and in benchmarks, but you'd never notice in real world usage thanks to crappy driver implementation by NVIDIA.
The HDMI out is good.. but I honestly didn't use it that much. If you use an AOSP rom, you're limited to 720p anyway.
The biggest thing I miss is the external SD slot... but I've adapted with the NS.
Just my two cents.

No way. I went from an N1 to a G2X to an NS. And I'll never make the mistake of leaving the Nexus line again. Trust me. The G2X is buggy as hell, I went through three of them before giving up. It's unusually heavy and tall, and has a awful waste of space around the buttons. Despite being "vanilla" Android, the stock ROM is crap. Not sure how the custom ROMs are doing these days. With ICS coming to the NS soon, you would be making a huge mistake to switch.
What if its bug free?

Nexus vs S3

I just ordered a S3 16GB. I have a nexus(not rooted), on Jelly Bean. I love Jelly bean and touchwiz looks good.
Just want to know how you guys feel, who came from a nexus to the S3. Was it a wise decision and would you want to go back to nexus?
I know a lot of people will say everyone is different and everyone has there own likes. Just trying to some opinions. Thanks!

A few folks I know had no end of antenna / signal issues with their Nexus devices. One had so many replaced due to hardware issues Verizon agreed to send him an S3. He likes the S3 much better, actually likes the touch wiz stuff and likes the camera, battery life MUCH better.
Have both use both but most of the time it's the s3. I battery life is awesome and AOSP roms are stable enough for everyday use. So the amazing camera and better battery life make it a no brainier. I just use the nexus when I'm filling frisky and want something different or new rom wise. Or when I go to the gym, since the audio playback on the nexus is a fair amount superior. Highs distort with the s3.

KLIPSCH Image S4's are a popular model of relatively high performing in-ear headphones...
BTW: I have a Nexus and just received my SGS3 today. The first Nexus I received had mad antenna issues. Verizon replaced it and the second one initially had constant 4G drops but after the Jelly Bean update, it's solid. JB didn't help the 1st one at all. Battery does seem to drain pretty quickly on the Nexus compared to other devices (HTC Evo, Evo 3D, etc.). I'll try to remember to provide more feedback after a week or so of using the SGS3.

the sg3 is 10x better than any nexus ive owned.
I have owned both, the S3 is better in basically every way, except I really did like the onscreen navigation buttons on the Nexus. Battery life is far superior on the S3, and everything for me just works. Reception is better also. Some improvements are really small over the Nexus, and I don't mean to down the nexus in any manner, it would be my phone if I did not have the S3. It's just a step up in most all aspects. I use stock ROM with the Apex launcher, as I like the stock android look. I am not ready to jump to Jelly Bean until completely stable. I am unlocked, rooted, running clean ROM 2.5.
I prefered my Galaxy Nexus over this one so far. It fit better in hand, looked better, and ran smoother out of the box. I haven't had a chance to get an aosp build together for this phone yet, but stock to stock I would take the Galaxy Nexus again now that I've had some time with the S3.

It is really disturbing what happened with the last Nexus... that name seems like it may just dissolve into just some marketing crap and maybe get you the latest OS when you buy it and some compatibility later but ... little else. Even more so now that there will be numerous Nexus devices so numerous flagships that aren't actually flagship devices.
Google meanwhile doesn't seem to care.

I came from a gnex. I actually wish I had kept it when I bought my s3. I liked the on screen buttons. The s3 batt life is better tho. Its not much of an upgrade in my opinion. The gnex was rooted and running jellybean. It was smoother for some reason. Now that I've used the s3 for some time. I prefer the nexus.

I too currently have the GSM Nexus and the SGS3 and switch between them swapping the sim. SGS3 impresses other people the most, but I like the Gnex a bit more. Damn good looking phone that runs so smooth. The 3 has more bells and whistles, but I don't use them much. If I could only have one, I think I would miss the Gnex more than the 3.

With my Klipsch ones and the s3 I have a little bit of distortion (almost a harshness of the tone) in the high notes. It's not evident with every song but if the tones go high enough it almost rings out. With my Klipsch s4 it's far more noticeable although honestly I think my s4 might need to be warranty replaced. Regardless it isn't there with my nexus at all. I played with them both on a trip to Chicago and there was very noticeable difference between the phones.

HTC One vs Nexus 5 ?!

Okay guys I need some serious help on this decission (Just can't decide!).
I have a GNEX now and it's been such a great phone ! But it's slowly dieing on me. I really have my eye set one the Nexus 5 and have been looking forward to it for such a long time. But as more and more specs comes out, im just not feeling attracted to it as I am by the HTC One. I'm also willing to pay that more (maybe) for the HTC One.
This is my personal +/- list, would love your inputs

LG Nexus 5

Advantages
- Nexus !!
- Software buttons
- Proccessor
Disadvantages
- Plastic
- Availability N/A
- Roms will take some time to develop
htc
I'd get the locked down HTC then keep fingers crossed that they maybe, might but probably not provide updates for it.
I have the HTC One and its an awesome some phone and I'm going to buy a n5. I can't say which one I like more since I don't have the n5 yet. All I can tell you is the HTC One won't disappoint is a great phone. I love the IR blaster it's the one phone feature of all these things they add now a days that I actually use alot.

The One is a nice phone but has a lot of bezel for the small screen. And contrast is pretty low but probably same as N5 if it has IPS too. You can be pretty certain the feel in your hand of the HTC One will be better, the precision crafted silver body is perfect. And front-facing speakers on One too.
One:
sleek design
front-facing speakers
N5:
unlocked
AOSP
faster, newer guts
prob pentaband, LTE for all
bigger screen

4.7 isn't big but it's also not in any form of the imagination small. Unless you are comparing it to a phablet which isn't a phone its a phablet.

I had the HTC one when it first came out for 2 week's I sent it back due to problem's...Have the N4 now...for me I never really used the IR blaster ( never used it on my S4A also ) but if I had to choose Id get the nexus 5 the only thing IMO your losing is boomsound you get newer hardware and can and will most likely be cheaper off contract also then the ONE
just wanted to add that i really enjoyed the Beats audio and the boom sound speakers from the one.
im contemplating on selling it for the N5 idk yet =/
I have the HTC One GPE and had the Nexus 4 before. Except for stock Android and the guarantee to get the newest Android first the Nexus line is obsolete in my opinion. I saw pics of the N5 and it confirmed my choice. It looks pretty ugly and I don't care about the latest or best specs. I will get kitkat on my HTC pretty soon after release and have a beautiful device with pretty awesome specs.

Lol. In comparison to my N4 it is amazing on stock JB 4.3. I get easily 20h with medium use. I don't play games so not sure how it would be with very heavy use. Standby drain is also very low. I charge over night so everything longer than 24h makes no sense for my habits.

Bootloader is unlockable. It's easy as pie to unlock flash recovery s/off root on a HTC one. You just have to email and get a code from HTC which the respond immediately. S/off is simple and if you wanna there is even a toolkit that does it all just like a nexus toolkit.

Nexus 5 vs. HTC One performance experience question.

I know these threads drive people nuts. I'm a phone junky. Over the last 2 years I've had at least 4 phones. Although i've had my HTC One since launch day - coming up on one year.
I hate skins on android. That's why I root and install an AOSP based ROM on my devices. I also like battery life and A2DP Bluetooth streaming.
So...anyone out there think the nexus is a worthwhile upgrade?. I'm already running KitKat. Software is no advantage the Nexus has. However... Is the Nexus a worthy upgrade? I have read that battery life was disappointing at launch. Is it still bad? What does the N5 offer over my One?

My 2 cents give the nexus the skip.
i had the htc one and the gs4.. sold my htc one to get the gs4.. then sold my gs4 to get the nexus 5.. i think the n5 is way better the both the gs4 and one.. thats just me.. this is my first nexus phone i love it.. i been threw like 6 top of the line phone in the past 3 yaers.. htc evo 4g.. htc evo 3d.. htc evo 4g LTE.. GS3. HTC ONE.. GS4... Nexus 5 is my fev phone out of all of them
I went from the GS4 to the N5 and haven't regretted it for a second. Out of 12 phones that I've owned over the last 3-4 years, this is easily the best one.
Get the N5 and keep the One.

Let me tell you a story:
Once upon a time, there was a guy who wanted an awesome new android phone. He decided to buy an HTC amaze as that was probably the best phone on the market at the time. He got it 1 month after the phone came out on the market and it was awesome. He enjoyed using it for 9 mos. before HTC decided to stop supporting their FLAGSHIP phone! Alas that phone was relegated to ICS forever.
Then, his girlfriend wanted a new phone and he thought, well, maybe it was just my bad luck to buy the HTC amaze right before HTC decided to realign their phone offerings. The HTC One S looks very good and it has the latest snapdragon S4 chip in it. So he bought her that phone and 9 mos later, HTC announces no more updates after android 4.1.2!
Moral of the story: stick with HTC one if you want an obsolete android OS in 1 year.

Battery life is as good or better. I still have my One and mainly use it to play music, but the Nexus outperforms it in every way and also seems to have a better antenna than the One. Plus, the Nexus has ART which I know is not supported on the HTC One because of Sense.
It's a very worthy upgrade. I do miss the speakers, Aux Sound Output, and sometimes a few 'Sense' things like BlinkFeed and the features in the stock messaging app.
I was in the same Situation like you and i dont regret getting the n5 at all. I had the GpE of the one and still the n5 beats it by a longshot. Speakers and build quality aside the n5 wins everything

I had the HTC One before the Nexus 5 as well, and I love the Nexus. The One is a great phone, but the One has 1) A faster chipset 2) bigger screen 3) STOCK Android (yay!!!)
However, if you're satisfied with your One.. just keep it. Unless you're dead set on having stock Android. The One does have some nice features, like the speakers (yes, stereo speakers) and very good build quality, compared to the Nexus 5 at least, which doesn't seem to fit together perfectly like the One.
As for battery life, I would say it's about equal. They both have the same size battery.

Good luck getting a 90% working ROM for the phone once htc stops supporting it. The Amaze and One S ROMs all have major things broken on it, whether it is Bluetooth or camera or something else not working or not working correctly. So I would say software for HTC phones are important.

The HTC One does have the benefit of being a GE supported device. Can't predict how that'll play out yet. Besides that, you statement is accurate. I came from ATT with and Atrix4g... the hardware is still great. But zero software support from the OEM and all the ROMs available aren't DD material for someone that uses their phone as part of business.
Hence the move to my HTC One on Sprint/Ting... Just to find out that I should have bought a cheap used nexus s and waited for a N5. :/
The way that I understand the GPE phones work is that Google releases the operating system to HTC and then they optimize it to work with their phone before they push out an update. So updates still have to pass through HTC. If they decide to end support for the one, I doubt they'll continue supporting the GPE phone.

That's just it. Even though the UI of the GPE One is all Google, it actually uses the stock Sense kernel. Once HTC stops updating the phone, it stops for the Google Edition as well.

Sell Nexus 5 and get Galaxy S5 ?

What do you think about Galaxy S5 ?
Is it worth alternative for a future upgrade ?
No

It's a downgrade in my opinion. Touchwiz is really, really bad.
It depends what you want to do with the phone.. Are you trying to run custom Roms. Root has been achieved, but not sure if Knox will be cracked to get to the bootloader.. I would wait and see how it goes. The new HTC one may be a better route. I know you can use bootstrap to run customs Roms. I just don't think they run as good as when you have an unlocked bootloader.

I played with an S5 in Best Buy yesterday. Definitely a downgrade. It's still stuttery like other galaxy phones, the new touch wiz leaves a lot to be desired. The only thing in my opinion that the s5 does better than the nexus is the camera. The only thing I personally would upgrade to would be the new HTC one at this point. I played with one of those too, very nice.

do you really want to change your $350 phone for a $600+ phone with nearly the same specs, some more gimmicks and a fugly UI? what will you use the extra 200MHz for? you wont feel the difference between the N5 and S5. well, maybe the N5 will feel smoother, since the new samsung crap UI appears to be choppy at some points. Quite honestly, after all the issues I had with samsung, I'd never consider going back to their devices. nuh uh.
If I got an S5 for free, I'd sell it then buy the Nexus 5.
you'll get better response if you ask in G5 forum

Seriously. The spec upgrade is so minor and touchwiz sucks. Why not get 300+ dollars in the bank and still stay top of the line?

Is it so much sluttery ? Which model did you try ? SM-G900H ?
I tried M8 the other day (hasn't played with S5 yet), it was as fast as Nexus 5 while navigating through the menus and etc.

Samsung can cripple any device`s speed with TW, i like Sense 100 times better tbh.
i have both a n5 and a s4. sure, by specs, the s4 holds its own, and appears to be better than the n5. but in reality, even with the s4 optimized and all the crap disabled, the s4 tends to lag and stutter. it feels like a phone from a few years ago, by the amount it tends to stutter. it doesnt feel like a phone with the specs it has. the n5 truly blows it away with real time use.

I had S4 GE in past and now on Nexus 5. They are exactly the same in terms of software.
The only downside, a new version of Android comes earlier to Nexus than to GE device.

How a snapdragon 600 can be better than snapdragon 800 ???
First, do what you want....we can't decide for you. ?
Second , it seems its getting harder and harder to play with new phones....some may never see root, or there will be complicated hack ways to root. Yes, many have dev type editions....but development for them is slow and limited. (Like moto x say)
So, if you like flashing and playing, the only sure bet now days is a nexus. If you can live with a quiet or non existant development community..... Then there's lots of great phones on the way or out. ?
