Dear heartbrake,
i had this issue eversince upgrading to 4.1 from 2.3. Exactl the same behaviour - but: I have the same thing happening with any linux distro i use at my house. Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu Linuxmint or openSuse they all showed up with at least 10 times trying to connect and hanging at "obtaining IP Adress" similar to my phone. With any Win device a connect is instant if Winphone or Windows Laptop.
BUT:
Last week i flashed CM10.2 and at that point the WIFI did connect as it should. So Problem solved for me
Hope this helps you a little
Cheers

You do have DHCP turned on on router? Try to wipe cache in recovery.

It can also happen that there is a problem obtaining a IP for a linux based system while beeing in an area where two WIFI transmitters with the same SSID blend e.g. a range extender or an access point.
Windows somehow just does not give a s**t... dont know if i like this - better sort the the things out than to instantly step over an issue - but i dont have the time to wait 10min each time trying to connect to WiFi.
The Wifi of my LG TV shows two identical SSIDs to connect to(Router and the Range Extender), all other machines just one(the stronger one)

yeah dhcp is enable and my router is configured to dynamic ip address..i even got obtaining ip address loop in cm 10.1 team canjica..i managed to connect to wifi by using 3rd party portable hotspot software for windows8..the phone now connects and no loop appears..i think its a 4.1 jb software bug as many users have posted it on youtube too..

not experienced with linux but i think its a bug in firmware 4.1 jb..i even got the same bug in cm 10.1 and i managed to fix it by using 3rd party hotspot software for windows as it now assigns the ip address without any problem..

[Q] Wifi on my Sensation works fine everywhere except im home!

While everywhere I go I can get a wifi internet connection, when I try at home I connect to wifi but I cannot get any data connection! My router is fine because all my friends use it to connect on the net with their phones.
Any ideas anybody?
A possibility
There are some cases where the router is not compatible wit Android devices and allows them to connect properly onto the wifi network, but not getting the proper IP, subnet and so on. Have you tried to manually enter these details into the phone and try out if there will be any Internet access afterwards or not.
In some other cases, maybe the DHCP pool is empty so it can not provide you with an IP, where manually entering the IP details should again help. But I think this is very rare case. About the first case though, I met some issues with the routers and the Android devices.
Hope this will solve the prob..
Have a lovely day!
Did you try rebooting your router? This happend to me sometimes too, my laptop can connect just fine but not my phone & a router reset always fixes it.
I have tried to manually enter the IP address, subnet and so on into the phone but still I cannot get an internet connection! I have also rebooted my linksys rooter but still nothing!
Log into your router and change the output channel. Sometimes if the router is putting out on a high channel say 13 for example this can cause some devices to not be able to communicate with it. So try changing it to a low number say 3. This should solve the problem.

This is more than likely because your router is set up to automatically switch to the channel that is the least congested, again if this is a high channel this can cause problems for some devices. What you are doing when you turn it off and on again is resetting the channel. I recommend you also manually select the channel by logging into you router and changing the settings.
I changed manually the router number several times but still no connection!
This issue is due to WIFI encryption. Try WEP or WPA encryption. I was facing the same issue. When i changed the encryption to WPA I am able to access the net.

Yes, it might be encryption, might be the channel selection as well as previously stated.
The thing with the channels is not only if they are on higher or lower, but they are just a little hops on the frequency side so for example if some other device is working on the same or close to yours channel, it might interfere and give you disconnections from the wifi, slower speed, no connection at all etc. etc.. So in some case the channel selection (changing the wifi channel) may do the trick. Unfortunately in your case as I can understand this is not true.
About the encryption, there is also one more thing as a security and that is not allowing the devices automatically, but with it's MAC addresses.
I would recommend just for testing purposes to try and disable all the security and check out the connection that way.
What sort of IP details did you entered on the phone? I mean - I was thinking of entering an IP different from the pool, subnet usually 255.255.255.0 (depends) and the Default Gateway to be the router's IP. Then for the DNS if you can try with the OpenDNS and one from Google.
And if you would like to share some info if there are any other devices connecting with the wifi at the premises and how they are working.
Hopefully you will resolve the issue, soon!
Have a lovely day!

having same issues ever since I flashed latest insertcoin ROM
I tried the 2.3.5 ROM and was having issues connecting to wifi, so I went to the 2.3.4 SSE, but wifi issues did not clear up. It hangs on obtaining IP.
This happens for all settings, static and dynamic, router reset did not help, modifying channels did nothing, neither did changing encryption settings. The wifi connection works for every other device in our home, including a stock Sensation.
Thanks in advance for any help. Since I'm a noob on forums I can't post to the dev section about this.

Hi, since the stock sensation is working properly, why don't you flash the relevant stock rom and see if that works, seems like all else failed

[Q] Wifi Problems

Hey guys/gals, I have a problem with setting up the wifi on the tab 7.0 plus.
It sees my SSID - I enter in the password, it says obtaining IP - but is stays there never actually giving me an IP from my router. I get signal strength, etc. but I cant access the net.
So i decided to try to set a static IP, but that did not work either (but not sure I did this entirely correctly, so ...)
Any solutions? Whats the problem? it can be that hard....

The likely problem is that DHCP isn't running on your network (or isn't working.) DHCP is something that usually will run on your router and assigns IP numbers to devices that connect to it. It's also possible that DHCP is working fine, but you have MAC Address filtering enabled on your router (which basically limits which devices can attach to your network.)
Finally, it might simply be a router incompatibility (though I haven't seen that very often.)
As to how to resolve those things... I can't answer that... I don't have the same router you do (unless you just so happen to have a linksys E4200), so can't walk you through reconfiguring it.
Good luck
Gary
Had the same problem at the beginning when I unboxed my Tab for several times. After few resettings my router an Tab it finally started to work and since that moment couple of days without any issue. So don't know where was the problem..:-(
I also had DHCP issues upon unboxing the tablet. When it first powered up and tried to connect to my D-Link router, my Wi-Fi would go offline. All of my other connected devices would also go offline. After pondering this bizarre behavior for a few moments I decided to turn off the tablets wifi. The router and other devices magically came back online and connected.
After repeating this several times just to make sure I wasn't seeing things I assigned a static IP to the tablet. Everything worked fine after that.
What I think was happening there was that the tablet was trying to grab the router's IP address and that was knocking everything offline. This is just a guess though. Maybe someone with more network saavy than me has some thoughts?
thanks i will try these tonite and reply back.
My Tab is rooted, but I dont believe that matters, correct?
Yes it shouldn't matters...
So i played around, couldnt get DCHP to work for an IP. So i went back to creating a static IP - i missed 1 digit on DNS1 the first time which is why it didnt work last night. Once the static ip was up - boom.....magic. I called samsung support, they indicated that this is a know issue with some home routers (mine is a 2wire) and that a static IP is the solution.
thanks for all the tips above, much appreciated.

[Q] O3D + WiFi doesn't connect to the internet?

This is a strange one, because it used to do it and nothing has changed.
The WiFi can obtain an IP from the router, it can connect to my PC via the router.... but it just cant connect to the internet via the router?
If I disconnect the WiFi and just use data, everything that has been waiting comes flying through!
Any ideas what is going wrong, the phone says it's connected, but I could swear my WiFi symbol used to go green, but it is just staying white.
Running 21E OS.
TIA.
Couldn't really understand (no offence) but if this happens to me I usually just restart my router and it would work again.

Yeah I do have a Netgear wireless, I left everything off all night but no joy... I will try your channel change thing and see if that works. It's strange because it used to work and i haven't changed anything that I am aware of and the PC has no problem. But obviously nothing is being sent to the Cisco CM. Hmmm....
Thanks for the input guys. :good:
Sorry OptimusTM, it probably was a bit garbled in my original post.... basically the PC gets to the internet (probably like most folks here) by contacting the wireless, then the wireless contacts the cable modem then it goes to the internet.
However my O3D can contact the wireless, but the wireless doesn't seem to contact the cable modem for some reason, however it will contact the PC.
The phone says it's connected to the wireless. It has been given it's IP address.
Check your DNS server address.
Put manually 8.8.8.8 and tell us if it works.

Thanks again for all your help guys...
I ended up fixing it buy changing the IP address that the wireless router was giving it (set it to static) and also the default gateway to the same as my PC's and it worked straight away.
Still no idea why it had such a dizzy turn in the first place though!?!? :silly:
same problem please can you explain steps

PROBLEM: Obtaining ip address loop

Hello,
I have been experiencing this problem for a couple of days now, and it's driving me crazy. I tried all i could find on the internet (resetting the phone, the router, wiping cache, using static ips, deleting files in \data\misc\wifi\dhcp...), but when i try to connect to my wlan all is stuck in this "obtaining ip address" loop. The weird thing is that this never happened before, and involves all android phones at my house now, but not my windows 7 pc. Im on the latest vipersaga rom, and we have other phones, running jb. What could i do? is anyone experiencing this?
Thanks for helping
Quick and easy fix is to assign your devices static IP addresses on your router.
Is the router running WEP encryption? If so change it to WPA2.

thanks, i solved it easily assignin the ip directly on the phone, i had had problems doing that just on my router. I had already WPA2 anyway

[Q] Wi-Fi / MAC address issues on my OPO

So far, my wi-fi has been working fine on Android L - except for when I'm home where my router has white-listed its devices with their MAC-addresses. It worked fine when running Android 4.4, but I had no success yet on Oxygen, cm12 nightlies or cm12s.
Whenever i try to connect, it says "Connecting.." and switches to "Saved" after some time and then tries to connect again. I have removed the whitelist and it connected fine - but as soon as the router restarts, I can't connect again. Even if my device's MAC address is whitelisted.
Strangely, it does connect once after a fresh cm12 or Oxygen installation, but only once. Disabling and re-enabling wifi will not let my OPO connect to it anymore.
Anyone having similar issues or any advice? It seems like my OPO doesn't want to reveal its MAC address to my router. Other devices can connect without any problems.
From Ubuntu Touch porting I know that the OPO uses a default (private) MAC address at startup until it get initialized with the correct one, save somewhere in a config or firmware partition. We are also currently unable to use more than 2 OPOs in the same network due to MAC address collission. Maybe you have the same problem, as it turns out, as our port is based on Lineage/CM for OPO.

Try flashing the modem/radio from one of the latest stock fastboot flashable ROMs perhaps? This may resolve your issue, especially if you where on a stock ROM that was old before you started flashing custom ROMs. There was once an app that would allow you to truly spoof your Mac address, but I believe it wasn't working for anything above Jellybean or Kit Kat. It used to be great help for moments such as these.
