I don't own a backflip but i think we need a forum to try and speed up the rooting process. Not because we need to, but because it needs to be done to do the phone justice. I don't think it's a BAD phone, the keyboard to me is pretty nice compared to the droids keyboard, but come on. This limits the phone to idiot teenagers when it could probably do so much more.
+1 this is actually a good device that really only needs a decent ROM.
I also agree on this as I already pm'd my request to the admins. please consider. THX
Agreed, I love my Backflip.
I agree as well... I love the device itself, just need to sharpen the ROM.
The Droid or Cliq never recieved a forum and I doubt this will. I'm all for supporting none HTC devices but don't get your hopes up.
I doubt that the backflop (even the g1 running android 1.0/1.1 can do more things that the backflip) will get its own forum. You can post things in the android section though.

You should check out this site for your moto needs. Like this forum is for htc devices and modmymoto is for moto devices
"Backflop" LOL!

I'm going to call BS on the G1 doing ANYTHING better than the Backflip. I owned a G1 and there is no comparison from build quality to the design and features. The Backflip has a couple of minor issues, otherwise it is a great phone. The issues are very minor and you can get around them easily enough.
Well as far as the moto droid, meh about it. The keyboard is meh which ruins it to me.
The reason we need a backflip forum is because this is actually one of the first solid Android phones for quite some time as far as phones with a keyboard (I just took a shot at the droid again. Go ahead, sue me.) It's also ATT's first android phone, and it needs to have some justice done for it. It's also just an interesting design which probably deserves it's own forum to me ;P
I think just having a Motorola Android forum would be just as good. BTW, I have a Droid for work and I much prefer the Backflip.
I would like to see a backflip forum as well. Seeing as its the only android phone ATT offers, I think we should have one.
I want to see a backflip forum. I got one and it is a great phone. AT&T just has too much crap loaded onto it that keeps autorunning itself (AT&T Navigator anyone?). I feel that this phone is way better build quality and has a lot more to it than a g1. I have owned 5 g1's and this is my first backflip.
Then again. I would also be just as happy seeing a "motoblur" section. This is one of my favorite android forums and I would hate to have to join another community.
Agreed. I've used these forums for the past two years for my Kaiser. Loved every second of it. Now I've upgraded to the Blackfip and I friggin love it. Albeit, there are some issues with it. My biggest gripe being that I can't get rid of the AT&T bullhooey (second being I don't have root ...yet). Let's at least have forums for each of the major brands/carrier whatever.
Either way, gotta love XDA-Devs!
The Droid X, Milestone etc bootloaders were not actually unlocked. It was a hoax. http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bootloader-still-encrypted-developer-comes-clean
I don't see why so many are willing to put up with this. There are plenty of other good android phones out there. As long as Motorola is going to fight this, there will never be a truly safe way to flash custom roms/kernels on droid phones, and devs simply aren't going to invest the time necessary to develop much.
I have seen some threads for kids apps. I am interested in finding/building a kids ROM.
My child has a prepaid SIM card and RAZR to be used for certain situations. I would want to be able to let my child carry the phone all the time but restrict what numbers could be called.
So my idea, which can't be an original one, is leverage Android power to install a rooted ROM but run in user mode when I give it to my child. User mode could restrict calling to the phone book only or restrict wi-fi/data access; basically anything that you wanted to restrict or remove. Maybe there could be a ROM builder.
I have many scenarios in mind but maybe they could all be solved by software apps instead of getting into a custom ROM? I'm tech savvy, but haven't ever done a ROM. If the answer is to develop a custom ROM, what device should I choose that would get the most community support? I figure it would be a low end phone, since the point is to make a children's rom.
May I ask how old is your child?
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig]
i was thinking of my son when you mentioned this, it is a great i dea, and i also thought if the original att kid's phone that was out a few years back. it was revamped and it sucked. but good luck on either building one or have some one make one ( put a bounty on it?)
Phones and ROMs
My child is 8 years old. I figure in a few years that it would be fine, but it seems like there would be more of a market for this.
I would put up a bounty for it but I'd prefer to make this a community effort too.
So I will change tack here and ask what the best ROM might be for me to start with and what phones might be recommended? I'm figuring that CM would be easiest to start with, generically?
Thoughts?
I think that is a very good idea.
A good part of that could be accoimplished with a kids theme on an existing ROM.
im sorry but the RAZR is a dumb-phone! it doesnt support 3rd party modding. im afraid you are mistaking the word 'ROM' and actually don't know what it means! You will have no luck finding such ROM for the RAZR... A bootloader of any sort does not exist!
You need a smartphone if you want such a job done, but it requires a investment into a smartphone which are generally more expensive and not intended for 'kids'
I understand...
@olyloh6696: Thanks for looking in on the thread!
You misunderstood what I was explaining. She _currently_ has a RAZR. I want to figure out what the best GSM _android_ phone would be to do the project I'm describing would be. I would of course have to get the new phone; I do understand that the RAZR does not support android (dumbphone).
Any thoughts on phone model or something out there like this already?

hi
well i guess the best option for a relatively cheap phone (that has android) is the zte blade (in my sig) it is a british phone, but gsm, so i think it should work in the us. if you read reviews for it, it has specs of the desire, nexus one, etc in a cheap budget range. read some revies on it! it also cost £100. Not sure what your budget is though. before you set out to buy the phone, you may need to look up a rom that supports the requirements you want, or you could request one/build your own.
good luck
Unrelated, but the RAZR does support modding lol. Back in the day, pre-Android, I used to hack the hell out of my Razr. There's even a hidden feature called Club Lights that uses the phone's microphone to detect music and make the lights on the phone go with the beat. Youtube it.
That's a great idea... it would be great on a tablet too.
I'm always worried that my son is going to click around in the market and download tons of apps without know it.
Remove Dialer.app, replace with custom Dialer.app
Is the source for the Dialer.app known, i.e. part of the main trunk of the Android sources? I was just thinking that it might not be too hard to just modify that original source to limit it only to the "contacts" tab, that way you can only call the contacts tab.
Another feature I thought of is using some kind of Dynamic DNS client to be able to dial in to the phone.
I was thinking that there could be a "phone home" app that would call home and report the currently used minutes and GPS coordinates, or similar.
Just trying to get the features set worked out and find out if there is existing apps that do this stuff.
2018, quick google search for Kids Custom ROM.... dead thread no progress. There is definitely a market for this, since it's easy to shove a phone into an OtterBox like case and let them have at it with safe guards. My kid has had an Ipad since age 2 without issue. Now she asks for my phone on occasion (years later). It would be easier to just take a custom ROM shove it on a cheap device and give it to her.
Sure, I am a minority, definitely but I can't consider myself the only person who would want to do this.
This is what I'm looking for my child. I'm a software engeneer but I've never works on Android. I think it's not a great works for an Android developer.
I'll follow this post for news.
digging this one up again. anyway to take something like at Nexux 5x and put a totally stripped down version of android on it to achieve something like the lightphone?

Per capita, there are very few people that actually root or flash custom ROMs, the number of kids that could/would use such a ROM is even less than that, this means it is not worth a developers time and hard work to build a ROM for this purpose, especially considering the plethora of different devices out there in the world. There would not be enough kids using "this" or "that" device with "this" or "that" custom ROM. To be as convenient for kids as what you are asking about, there would have to be a "kids ROM" for a large number of devices. This is not a reasonable expectation by any standard.
Add to that, the fact that rooting devices and flashing ROMs can quickly go bad if the user is not familiar with certain aspects of using a device that is rooted or flashed with a custom ROM, this makes for some rather difficult issues to solve due to user error, ignorance and inexperience of the user.
If you want a "safe" or "basic" ROM for a device, you'll have to learn how to build it yourself because I can promise you that no developer is willing to put that much time and effort into building ROMs that will only be used by a small number of users.

Hi.
What kind of power we can have if we will make petition to Samsung software/developement team to do some updates of Android to our phone?
How many users are here that have this awesome mobile?
I always think is good idea to try than moan...
I e-mailed Yotaphone and asked if they would consider making a qwerty slider....
I think it would be beneficial if we all did the same.
It is not my intention, to find new device.
I am fed up going for new.
Old is good enough many times.
Our mobile is enough for emails, www etc. but the only downside is software.
It's not going to happen. Both the carrier (T-Mobile) and Samsung would need to agree that it's worth spending a lot of money to give this phone an upgrade. Given that both companies want you to buy a new phone every 5 minutes, neither of them want people to be satisfied with their old phone. And speaking of old, this phone is almost 3 years old and has a small user base. There are hundreds of more popular phones released between then and now which haven't seen updates, so no one's going to pay much attention to ours. The only way to get updates is to make them ourselves.
If we don't try - we will never know for sure.
How many registered users are in Relay section, can anybody check?

I'm still using mine, but it's really a secondary phone at this point. Given that the flex cable is this phone's Achilles heel, I don't slide the keyboard out very often, either.
lol. How about a few of you...
a) learn to code and help move the 5.x support forward,
b) donate a phone to a dev, since the two primary developers no longer OWN a relay (and both have mentioned that they would be willing to work on it if somebody donated a phone).

I would love to learn how to code but no one really has time to teach and i know there are plenty of guides but I'm afraid I'll kill my phone. I've already managed to kill my usb port, not from coding attempts, but nonetheless inoperable. As for donating, the relay is my only working t mobile phone so I don't want to give it up. I would, however would pitch in on one. From what I've seen they go for about 100 or so. I would like to be part of the solution in any way I can.
Another Relay user here...
Since this is one of the last good QWERTY phones around, figured it was time to stop just lurking this forum and sign up lol. I'd also be willing to test any new 5.x ROMs built, since I'll have an alternate phone in a couple of days that I can fall back to if I break this one.
I have a phone and I can code, however I need somebody who give me clue or some direction to follow. I've never coded for hardware, only business apps.
This one is not gonna be cheap, but if it runs android it will be amazing:

Wow! Extremely cool, man! Thanks for the info
[DISCLAIMER]
I have basic understanding of programming and the android software so I'd like as much help as you can provide.
This includes personally messaging me. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS THREAD OR MY POSTS PM ME AS I DO NOT WISH TO JUST CRUM UP MY GOALS HERE WITH DISCUSSIONS OF WHY THIS IS A BAD IDEA OR ANYTHING ELSE NOT CONCERNING THE MATTERS AT HAND.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[REASON]
This is my favorite device. I it seems to have long been forgotten and there are a lot of dead links. I understand the OG Devs have seemingly turned their backs on us in search of their own paths in life.
I do not blame them at all and instead I am sad to come upon the realization of how low our economic powers have come to have the ability to turn our own role models against us and their years or dedicated work here on XDA.
I can chat all day about my life and history here, you can message me directly if you must. Just understand my life hasn't been easy.
I was adopted at the age of 7 from another country into an American family that had hard heads and a cut throat attitude to rules they didn't even understand.
From the age of 10 years old I fell in love with technology and software. My efforts were suppressed greatly.
I was denied access to a simple flip phone that had no service and was punished for wanting to learn programming. I started hacking.
I learned all I could to become free of my chains. At 15 I made the money to buy my first Iphone (3GS), I fixed computers for people I knew for free even though I never owned my own. I used those opportunities to learn about jailbreaking and how basic filesystems and programming.
A lot happened during my years growing up I had a few good friends with good families that had androids, iphones, computers and they were glad to show me things and let me use their devices. One of my good friends had a Razr Maxx which he later Traded for an HD through his phone plan. I was in love and I helped him fix it a few times when he needed help. Then one day things didn't go well for me.
At 17 I was thrown away by the abusive family that adopted me and I traded my Jailbroken Iphone for a galaxy prepaid phone which was owned by a homeless drug addict I met at a shelter. The trade opened the world of Android and Linux to me from a hands on personal perspective. I loved it. But the device was small and low spec.
I started rooting. I found XDA. I wanted so badly to be a programmer but my life got in the way due to the simple fact that I had no one left to turn to. All my friends I learned from had went into collage and left or didn't want to be seen with the homeless kid. I was powerless due to reasons you can ask in a PM. I did all I could. I fixed my life over the years. I'm in my late 20's now and I finally got a few of these phones. I've learned a lot about Android, Linux, Unix, etc. At least as much as I could while struggling through managing my time and resources in life. At one point I even had an internship for IT through a school. That internship was ruined due to the recent pandemic that shut down the schools and forced me to move.

[THE INTENT]
This thread is going to be my way of securing a piece of technological history.
The history people such as Geohot and other big names on XDA and the Android rooting community have built to benefit us all. It may be hopeless but I plan to revive it. Even if I have to from scratch.
I then will go as far as saving files that are important on an offline storage and create an open platform for anyone to access for historical and educational purposes.
[THE PLEA]
I have been begging people all my life.
I had to let go of my ego to survive at a young age. And I am here now. Begging anyone who sees this. Help me out.
You can help support these effort by sharing resources I can use to bring us all the freedom of having End-User control of old devices such as these.
And and even better way to support this cause is helping me amongst this capitalist infrastructure by providing currency in the form of donated funds.
I will start a fundraising account soon but for now YOU HAVE THE OPTION to donate by sending funds to:
HERE
[ONWARD]
All our findings are within the spaces of this thread. I start this journey with:- A job
- A Windows 10 PC dualbooted with Linux and Linux subsystem
- 1 Droid Razr HD on JB 4.1.2 (xt926) with unlocked BL
- 3 Droid Razr Maxx phones on JB 4.1.2 & KK 4.4.2 (xt907) with locked BL
Issues I've come to find since 2022:- Most links on XDA before 2017 have been shutdown or replaced.
- Towelroot servers are shutdown due to Geohots employment/Integration with the big Goog. This means Hydrogen is only partially usable.
- Kingroot, Kingoroot, and Sunshine have the most effective exploits, regardless of the invasive integration.
I vow to make the best of this.
I will stand up for my work to never be diminished and for the rights of others to own their own hardware and have software they can rely on to the best of my ability.
ONLY WITH YOUR HELP
I'm gonna clean up my files and share all the most important ones still available.
I managed to find two custom Roms that work with the KKBL (2014)
Along with working TWRP files for the KKBL & JBBL
I located stock Firmware for JB and KK and decided to leave ICS due to it being outdated. It's sad for me because I liked ICS but I'm not here to preserve the OS. I'm here to preserve the phone, it's firmware, and It's potential.
I'm just about done with prepping this device (xt926) for custom development. For now I will turn my attention to the xt907.
I have started development of my own Rom. My first mission is to create a flexible file manager. My overall goal is to have a Rom that blends into my favorite Holo style and can run a clock widget as good as the circles3D on any Rom and ULBL devices.
