Screen on time not reporting correctly - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone notice there screen on time doesn't seem correct. I got to 3 hours 56 mins of SOT and at 20% half an hour later after watching YouTube videos I looked at the SOT and it was still at 3hours 56mins. What's going on here I also wiped out all cache and rebooted the phone same issue.

Always plays up after a reboot, it was the same on nexus 4.. eventually it will start working
You can manually get it going again by turning the screen off and on then press the refresh button on the battery stats page.. repeat if it's still not going

Interesting, this is probably why some people are saying there SOT sucks.

[ERROR REPORT] EG 5.5 problems

Generally happy with EG 5.5 but I have a few issues to report so far.
1.) I was in a call and had to navigate through an automated system by pressing numbers. This worked for about a minute or so of me pressing a number then putting the phone back to my face (at which point the screen went off as it should) and repeating. After the fourth or fifth iteration the screen stayed off and I had to take out the battery to reboot.
2.) Browsers still crash when I change orientation.
3.) Battery drains really rapidly compared to other builds (including 5.0). This may simply be the indicator not actually reporting properly though as I noticed my phone was stuck at 48% for three hours yesterday no matter what I did with the phone.
All of that said, I really appreciate all of the effort that's gone into these releases. At the moment though, I'm tempted to switch to the latest EG gingerbread release as I'd like hardware acceleration again, even though I vastly prefer the UI improvements in ICS. Meh.
Thanks for all of you hard work.
Clear battery stats from recovery I had the Same issue with the battery I haven't charged my phone since yesterday around 7 and I have around 45% right now .when the screen shuts off and doesn't want to turn on press the power times 2 times or 3 but quick. When u reboot your phone make sure u let it sit for around 5 min before you start using it . Dolphin HD works like a charm no issues so far. navigation works too p.s make sure u calibrate ur battery

Battery stats has nothing to do with calibrating your battery.
Battery stats only shows what has been using your battery like which apps you run... that's it, it does not store your battery's information.
It fixed the issue I don't know what I did but it worked

I had forgotten to recalibrate, still not getting great battery life but at least the indicator is working properly. Haven't had a repeat of the screen blanking during a call as yet. Dolphin HD still crashes when I change the orientation. I even did a clean install and still the same issue sadly.
Thanks for your responses...sorry it took so long for me to reply.

Do I have a bad battery? I sometimes charge my phone twice a day!

Let me start off by saying that I'm aware that the ROM you run can effect your battery and I know I'm on a CM10 build right now but believe me when I say that I have flashed synergy, nosympathy, beans, liquid, and even a stripped stock, none of them were significantly better some were even worse.
I had my phone charging and it was at 100% when I went for a jog, an hour and a half later the battery was at 82% with about 15 mins of on screen time, came back and used it a little more and got it up to 27 minutes of on screen time and 68%
I've seen screenshots and posts of people saying that they go all day or even 2 days without a charge and can easily get 4+ hours of on screen time while the most i have ever gotten on any rom was 2.5
Just a heads up, i have no third party apps installed other than pandora and google play music auto brightness turned off at about 1/3 max no accounts sync other than my 1 google account. Not sure if it helps or not but I've noticed that I can go the entire night unplugged and will only use about 5-7% battery, It's once I turn the screen on that I start seeing the battery drop over a percent every minute.

You have a lot of time where the phone isn't able to sleep, streaming music keeps it awake even with the screen off.
Sometimes its the network. Searching for signal...
i use pro-amp to listen to music on the train on my way in to work. I usually use up that much and sometimes more just listening to music. IF you are streaming music, that could be the issue. I know it is why my battery isn't as good as others.

I would definitely NOT recommend doing that.
Some posters have permanantly lost their 4G connection by doing this when their phone refused to ever go back into 4G again.

Can someone help me pinpoint my crappy battery life issue?

I have stock android Non rooted. I turned off Google now, reduced the number of apps that automatically sync. Put display down to 15 percent brightness.
I have no idea whats causing this:

I did some youtube, gaming etc. Obvisouly not THAT much given my low screen on time.
Even without vid watching, it drops about this much each day.
THe only way Im gettign by is by having a wireless charger so i constantly charge it.
Do you have the SendHub app by any chance? It was sapping up my battery and I have better results after I froze it with Titanium.

It's obviously the screen doing most of the damage. How bright is your phone set to again? Just 15? I can see the dips when your screen is on and for an hour of screen on time, that's not out of the question on a device that only totes about 5 hours max of screen on time.
Also why are your fonts so huge? Accessibility settings? If you're not rooted and running stock you need to be checking background processes. Id recommend maube looking into rooting and installimg a custom kernel so you can check and adjust a cpu governer to make sure your CPU isn't running faster than it needs to. You could also possibly stand to undervolt a bit.
Edit: made some errors my bad

Speculations until we see a BetterBatteryStats log. Get us one of those if you want real answers. Using the device while gathering the data for the log can obscure the issue, so gather a log overnight. That awake time is troubling.

Yes there were a few apps that had a lot of time, the keyboard, Box.com app, facebook, and a few others. But I didn't bother with it too much because the idle time isnt that bad. The battery goes down quickly two ways: 1. Screen on time. 2. Me checking it every few minutes wakes everything up I guess and lowers it really fast.
What do you mean by "some Youtube"? 15 mins or an hour?
And did you check the Mediaserver runtime? I had a battery issue with my Nexus 5 on stock ROM too and the reason was the permanent Mediaserver activity.
Sadly, I couldn't figure out the reason. Maybe there is a corrupt file on your storage and it keeps scanning or an app is not really compatible with 4.4...
I switched to a custom ROM and the problem was gone...

Well, the screen on time was about 45 mins...Id say about 30 min of Youtube.
Its not mediaserver usage. the biggest thing is the screen I think. Ive been trying to find apps that run in the background and uninstall them as well.

Battery draw only after WiFi use

I rarely ever use WiFi but when I do after I get back I to a good signal area and turn WiFi off my phone has a big draw on the battery.
For example... I go to my friend's house where signal is poor and I turn on WiFi where there. Get home that night and turn WiFi off and charge the phone over night. Next day by lunch I'm around 60% battery left with about 15 min screen on time where I'd usually be around 90%. Reboot phone and battery draw will stop.
I'm on stock Rom and kernal, 4.4.2, black 32 gig model, t mobile service, of any of this matters.

There have been a couple posts about this issue. It's a bug in Android or the firmware, don't know which one. Cycling airplane mode should also fix it.
I searched but didn't find anything. I'll try cycling airplane mode next time but I'd still like to find a permanent fix.

It happens on full stock also. BBS doesn't show anything. Literally 5-8% per hour drain, and BBS shows nothing. Nor does the system battery stats. I'm thinking that maybe it's an issue like the screens on this device, where everyone's looks a little different. Maybe there's a slight variation in some of the hardware, like the modem, that is causing this issue for some and not for others. The N7 2013's have the whole touch screen fiasco to support this theory.
It could be in the stock kernel code. If that's true, it's been carried over to FK.
It could be in the modem. But it still happens on both of them.

For some it does but also for some it does not. May as well limit the variables whilst troubleshooting. Doesn't happen to me on full stock or any other ROM and kernel combination so I doubt the issue exists specifically in full stock without any other combination of attributing factors.

I'm not saying I don't believe you. I'm just saying if it doesn't affect everyone, there is more to it than a straight up bug. It must be a combination of things (possibly including a bug) and the best troubleshooting is to limit the variables.
Just to be clear mine is stock unlocked. I was going to flash cm11 and see if that stops the problem but it seems as if it won't. Since it seems some have it and some don't getting the phone exchanged might be my best option?

just so i'm clear.... i notice the drain after i turn off wifi, the drain could start as soon as i turn it on but i'm not sure. i really notice the hit the next day at work. i'm usually at 90% around noon (i take my phone off the charger around 7:30) and if i used wifi the day before i will notice i'll be at 50-60% by lunch. for example i went the entire day today, used my phone like crazy at lunch time and just got off a 10 min video call with my kid and my battery is at 37%. if i had used wifi before this charge the phone wouldn't have made it to this point without needing a recharge.

This seems similar to what I've seen. I'm fairly certain it happens with wifi both on and off, but as I said, I do have it toggle every day. I reboot my phone a lot because of Xposed module updates, but I disabled the wifi toggle task that I have Tasker run every morning and afternoon, I will try to see if it still happens.

Bad battery life on my recent Nexus 5

Hello,
I got a second Nexus 5 after my first one suddenly developed a modem fault and refused to work in 2G areas. This time, I got one in red, used, manufactured in March 2014. The phone is in great condition and is as good as new.
Problem is, the battery life is really bad. I'm on stock rom with ElementalX 1.12 and despite undervolting by -25 on all frequencies, my battery life is as shown in the images below. I easily got 3.5-4 hours of SOT with some 15-20% battery remaining on my previous Nexus 5 which I got in December 2013. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the only phone I can afford right now and I'll have to live with this purchase till at least next year. Thank you.
P.S: I'm down to 22% within the last 30 minutes with an extra 10 minutes of SoT while doing nothing but keeping the screen active.
How's your signal?
Signal is generally good. I was travelling to a remote location today hence the poorer signal but on any day, my battery is pretty much the same. Especially now that I'm back home with a solid signal, it's still dropping battery.

your battery is fine. the longer you go without charging, the shorter amount of screen time youre gonna get. im a heavy user, and use up my battery within 10 hours, but i see 5h sot every day. you are using closer to 24 hours but are seeing 3.5-4h sot. i see nothing wrong with your battery. lower your brightness some and youll see better battery. keep your brightness around 20%.
20 hours, 33% remaining, what's the issue? 3hrs SoT is what is to be expected without reducing the settings that drain your battery. A small undervolt and custom kernel aren't going to affect your run time noticeably, so you've actually yet to do anything significant to increase battery life. That would require adjusting settings to maximize run time.
For more information, see the battery help thread.

Hello,
I am using nexus 5 for couple of days now. Recently I am getting this running process "mm-qcamera-daemon" which is eating 31% of my battery life. (Check my screenshots attached) which is even greater than screen % of about 16% only.
The battery drains real quick. Even though I reboot the phone,it doesn't work.
I also keep getting error message of "cannot connect to camera".

it could be a bug with the rom you are running, if its a custom rom. if so, id flash the factory img first. btw, which version of android is running? anyways, if after flashing the factory img it still happens, i suspect a hardware issue if your camera is not working. so, after a full run, it uses that much battery or is that only in the very beginning, when you just start using after unplugging?
