Hi all
Im new here so I hope this is posted right. Ive developed an Android app that is similar to the iPhone Photoswap app. For those not aware, Photoswap lets you take a photo and send it to a random person, and you will in return receive a random photo back. You can then take part in picture-conversations with the person who you received a photo from.
Ive had a couple people testing my app and it seems to just about ready (apart from using the default app icon), and I'd like to put it out there for others to start using (and hopefully provide some feedback on ) Im new to android development (although not new to programming itself), and this is my first android app. IMHO it works better than the similar Picswap app that exists already, as this doesnt force-close constantly or throw-out error messages regarding "corrupt" images
I have attached the APK with my post for anyone who wishes to download and install it
There is a known issue with the app at the moment that it does not (at least on HTC devices) delete any photos that you have taken, and they still appear in your Photos app. From what Ive found, using the camera Intent saves 2 copies of the photo to the SD card, and Ive only found one path from the URI to delete (so 1 copy is deleted, but the other remains). These can be deleted from the Photos app still however, but Im looking into how to delete these automatically from the app also.
Edit: The app also starts with a blank screen (no default image yet), just press the menu key to begin
Edit 16th September: New APK uploaded, fixes some threading issues and adds debug log output. Please download and install this as the old one may continue to run in the background and not pause properly when changing apps.
For those having issues, please use aLogCat (from the market) and filter by "SnapSwap" to access the debug log. Please PM me a copy of this along with your phone model and android version and I will look into it Most issues so far seem to be with Cyanogen Mod and Motorola users
hay, i'm one of the beta testers,
and this app is really nice
i hope the optic would be a bit better in the next beta , but it makes fun to "swapping" pictures with other testers !
it is much faster then "a world of photo" it never take longer then 10sec since i get a picture
Really nice and weLL done
Greetings from germany !
Thanks for sharing!
Im going to try make an icon for it soon along with a default image to be shown as well, and adjust the polling time with the server for replies (or even look at adding a push notification system to it)
Just updated the APK in my original post to fix some bugs as at least one user was not being assigned a unique ID properly, updated the server to watch for this also.
For those that have already installed the app, I recommend installing this one over it
If those that have installed it could provide some feedback it would also be greatly appreciated
nice idea i like it , i will share my photo with others sounds good
i will feed u back
I downloaded, installed and when i took a pic it immediately force closed.

There has not been any unwanted material sent via it as yet. Im looking into the best way to ban those that would at the moment. As it is currently though, devices are only identified via a unique ID provided by the server the first time the device accesses it, and this is extremely simple to get around if I were to "block" a device.
To those that have had force-closures: Can you please let me know the following..
1) Do you have an SD Card installed?
2) What device are you using?
3) What version of Android are you running?
Works great for me on Samsung Vibrant. I only get one copy of the pictures (that I take), then of course the temp files SnapSwapImg.jpg (the last pic I took) and SnapSwapImg2.jpg (the last one I received). I totally dig the application! You can reply to pictures (of course, with other pictures), receive replies, and even continue your "pic conversation" with that individual. Yeah, you could end up with a dude's (or chick's, though I doubt there'd be many complaining) junk in exchange for your picture, but putting in any kind of regulation for something like that just ruins the whole point of the application. Can't wait to see this adopted by more people.

Actually, an adult app like this could be huge. porn drives technology, dont forget it.

Sounds pretty cool; I'll try it out. How many unique users do you have?
how do u download it?
This is just like the PicRoulette app. You take a picture, and it sends you the latest picture someone else just took.

Is there any way (hack) to make the camera shoot in 16x9 format?
Also, any way to have the camera upload automatically online (smugmug, in my specific case)?

I don't know about forcing 16x9 with the camera...there's probably third party camera apps that will let you.
For the automatic upload, there's an app called Tasker that sounds like it will let you do stuff like that. Modaco tweeted this just today:
Tasker IS the most amazing app ever. Whenever I think 'I wish I could do THIS' on my phone it has a way. Brilliant.

Thanks.
I looked at Tasker, but in the brief evaluation period I could not see a way to auto upload to smugmug, so i uninstalled it.
But I found an app named PicPush, which does exactly that: it pushes pics and movies you take with the phone to various sites, including smugmug.
Does anyone know of a good camera app which would do high res 16x9 photos, and also has a decent set of options? I didn't find anything I liked on Market.

Brief evaluation period? You mean the 15 minutes from the Market?
There's a week long eval period if you download and install from the dev's website. Moot point for you since you found another application, but others reading may be interested.
Hello everyone,
I have been following xda-developers forum for a long time and I felt that I should share my first Android application here. I would really like people to try it and maybe be kind enough to return me with some positive/negative feedback. Please be gentle, since this is my first experience
My application is on the Market and it's named Flickr Earth. It especially focuses on displaying Flickr photographs according to the geographical location it was taken.
Some of the features of the app:
- Browse through photos taken near your current location
- Explore photos taken anywhere in the world by navigating through the map or searching for a target location
- Specify a geographical region (a country/continent) and search for a tag among the photos taken there
- Find exactly what you are looking for by making advanced search queries on Flickr (specify tags, date range, interestingness, etc.)
- View highly detailed information about any photo you stumble upon (e.g. tags, date taken, location on map, camera model, other photos by the same user)
- Save photos in your device or share it with your friends through e-mail, instant messengers or social networking sites
There are some screenshots attached to this post.
You can find the application on the market with name: Flickr Earth
Or, you can simply scan the QR image at the bottom, linking to the market page.
Thank you so much for your time.
Cheers,
Yunus
Seems cool~

Thanks guys! Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
You hear lots of app ideas, but only the odd one really sticks out as something that could catch on. This is one of them. Downloading now

One thing I noticed was that sometimes it's a little hard to notice the white loading icon on the light background of the map, I thought the app had crashed until I looked at it closely.
Works very well though. Good job.

I totally agree with you on that. I have thought of that 2-3 weeks ago, but I think I am not able to change the color of the progress icon. Though, it may be sorted by fading out the color of the background map to grayish, so that it will be more visible.
I'll definitely have that fixed for the next release. Thanks for the idea!
yeah, sound good. i will try it.
A little bit of free publicity for you

Very cool app!! I like it. Can use as a source of inspiration for my photography.
Is location data is being pulled based on if mapped in flickr or the geo tag in the image it self?
I ask because I have several photos in my photostream mapped to the Des Moines, IA area of the US via flickr mapping but not geo tagged and they are not showing in your app.
Here is my flickr map. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcarley/map/
Is there a time diffierential? In other words does it only show photos X days/months old or is it current? If I tag a photo today and post will it show right away?
Great work!!

Hey mate. I am glad you've enjoyed it.
About the photos, I believe they only appear in the result if the photos actually contain the geographical data (latitude&longitude). But still, some of the photos I've uploaded to Flickr appear in the application and some of them don't. I am still not 100% clear about how Flickr API chooses the photos to return to a search query. But in your case, I believe they do not appear since they don't have the embedded geographical data.
And about the time, my experience is that the photos appear in search results in about 2-3 hours after they are uploaded to Flickr. However, this does not guarantee that they would appear in the application. Since it only displays 15 photos in a single map screen, if there are more than 15 photos tagged in that area, your photo may not be chosen to show up This is totally random.
Thanks a lot for testing it out!
Cheers,
Yunus

Thanks for the info.
Noted a possible issue - At least on my device. Running CM7 on Incredible phone. When I use the Navigate on Map option, the GPS turns on and starts flashing, but when I exit the app it doesn't stop. The app doesn't show as running and when I try to FC the Maps app it doesn't stop. I have to reboot to get the GPS to stop searching. I have to try on my Acer A500 tonight to see if it does it on there as well.
Brilliant App, and a great idea.
Thanks to the Dev.
(I have rated in market also).

Thanks for pointing this out, since it was a pretty important detail that I've missed (sucking down on battery). Now, I have released version 1.2 which turns off the GPS when you close the app or move it to background.
Additionally, the photos that load on map are further randomized, so you can get various different photo results even when checking the exact same map area. Also, I've adjusted the map photo loading spinner to be more visible (thanks to your feedback jcarley0830).
Thanks to everyone for their helpful feedback. You are great!
Would you ever make the code open source ???? also im just downloading the app i will leave feed back once i tested it Thanks

I'm on 4.4.2 and I've found a very serious bug that made me lose a couple of photo, here's how to reproduce it:
Assume that you don't use Google+ and you keep it disabled on your phone (manage application > google+ > disable), so you don't have the Photos app in your drawer too
Open the camera
Swipe right in photos
Look at topleft, you'll find the Photos icon, THIS WORK AS A NO-CONFIRMATION-DELETE button!
I've read about Photos becomes the default application swiping from camera in 4.4.1, so I may expect an error / force close but I could never imagine that...
Can anyone confirm this?
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/using-the-camera/nexus-5/HhmMfQki-Qs
that would be very bad. I just started using photos, but never using gplus!
I could reproduce this issue.

Yes, topleft, op edited.
Plese reply on google thread too (other user already confirm the issue), thank you
I fell victim to this yesterday! Very annoyed. I accidentally double tapped and deleted 2 photos in rapid succession when I only wanted to delete 1. I hope they patch this in the next update. Otherwise I'm going to have to try and remember not to delete photos from the Camera and go into Photos afterwards and do it there.
Update: Looked into recover options. Didn't find anything that will help me get back the already deleted file, but found something that will save me going forward. Already tested and confirmed recovery of a photo deleted directly from the Camera.
Installed Dumpster - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baloota.dumpster
No root required, used the default setup and options.
Just download an alternate gallery like QuickPic. The Photos app is horrible, anyway.

Just delete Google+
I assume you don't use Google+ from the title so just delete the app (Google+) If You can't then it's a system app so you have to download something like "NoBloat" or "System App Uninstaller" so that you can remove Google+ Completely.
Google Luck
Hit that Thanks Button

Deleting Google+ from system/app does Not resolve the problem. I wish it did.
Disabling (or deleting) Google+ CREATE the problem.
That's because Camera app has some reference to it and a crazy behavior when didn't found it!

Hey. I've been using XDA- Developers since my samsung galaxy S2 then the S3 then the Note 2 and Now The Nexus 5, Of course I want to post in the dev section... You've been me at some point. Camera is one of the easiest thing to get wrong in any ROM so many variables take part into it, the ROM, Kernel and Mods. Since when Franco Kernel was bad????...It's the best plus I use a modded version of Franco Kernel made by LaboDj in which he uses Linaro

Since the camera ties into the Photos app, and the Photos app is a part of Google+, it's not surprising disabling Google+ with break something. Just like disabling any /system app it can cause problems. It even states that in the dialog. "If you disable a built-in app, other apps my misbehave."

Steps as outlined in the OP are inaccurate based on the subject itself, and I think things got further muddled by the incorrect use of terms (Photos vs Delete) and location (top-right vs top-left etc.)
To clarify: the issue as I understand it (and can reproduce 100% of the time) is that from within the Camera app you can permanently delete a photo without confirmation, by clicking the Delete trashcan icon in the top-right.
Steps to reproduce:
Open the Camera app
Swipe from the RHS to view photos
Click the Delete trashcan icon in the top-right
Photo is permanently deleted without any confirmation (Undo will be available for the last deleted photo only, and only if there is more than 1 photo remaining.)
Edit: Ok, now I'm confused. It seems perhaps I have misunderstood the issue being discussed, and that it is potentially related to disabling Google+ and the Photos icon in the top-left...
Issue that I described above is also/still an issue IMO. I don't like the fact that I could accidentally permanently delete a photo because I double tapped the Delete icon.

Are your photos dependent on Google Photos? Maybe they're in the cloud and can be accessed on another device.
Also, use a root file manager to search your device for all *.jpg.
