Hey.
I'm on Orange in the UK and recently got promteped to download the new Jellybean software. I'm not a rooted user and don't really want to go down that root.
The new firmware has made my device laggy, the home and back buttons now have a slight lag when I press them and the keyboard is absolutely shocking when I type. I'm on whatsapp pretty much all day and its now making me have loads of mistakes when I type which I didn't before.
I've installed the keyboard app that everyone highly rates, Swiftkey I think it's called but it's still laggy.
I've deleted the keyboard data and restarted the phones loads of times and it's still there.
Basically I just want to go back to how it was before, is there a way I can without having to delete all apps and start my phone again or without having the phone rooted?
Cheers for any helpful replies.

If you used ota update to jelly bean, I'm afraid the only way to get to ICS is to get rooted.

Does OTA stand for over the air? If so, then yes I did it over wifi when the notification popped up the other day.
I ended up bricking my Samsung Galaxy S last tiem I tried rooting and i'm not really in a situation where I'd like to try it again. Pretty heavily reliant on my phone lately.

It seems strange that your phone would be laggy from an actual OTA update. Swiftkey is a great keyboard and is my preferred one actually.
As far as your problem. You might be able to factory reset your phone via the bootloader. However, it may reset to the latest update and not actual factory version. I'm not sure. This would delete your apps and all that though.

He's phone is not rooted, so he's phones bootloader is locked.
Just maybe give a JB a few days. I think that is really good. Or it is not worse then ICS IMO.

I have just checked my internal data and I am right on the limit, I've noticed before that has caused lots of lag.
Currently transferring 2.5gb of photos back to my computer to free up some space and see if makes any difference :good:
Will get back to you. Thanks.
Nope. Made no difference. Looks like i'll just have to suffer!
Yes the only other solution for you involves rooting. It is possible to go back to ICS by rooting your phone, going through a bootloader downgrade, hexediting a particular partition, then running an older compatible RUU... Its all possible, but requires some time to understand and do. And definately requires a few wipes of phone data in the mean time (which can be backed up through titanium and custom recoveries).
Thanks for a detailed reply.
Really frustrating as it's supposed to make things better but in turn has pretty much ruined my previously quite enjoyable experience with the phone! Nice one HTC haha.
This might sound stupid, i'm not really in the know, but if I rang Orange / HTC, would they be able to supply me the older update over the air?

Only need to do that if you want to downgrade hboot. All you have to do is root and flash a rom, I have JB radio and hboot and run ICS Trickdroid 8.1.0.
Yes I was talking about a full downgrade including older firmware. Shadow is correct that you can still run ICS ROMs on JB firmware. That still requires you to root your phone, etc. But it's not that hard to just flash an ICS Rom and corresponding kernel if jb is not your cup of tea. I too have some firmware from JB, such as radio and wifi but am on viper 1.2.1 now. But a full rollback as I explained can be done, but is more technical.
But its all about rooting your phone! Do it anyways! Its fun! The world without a warranty can be scary at first, but also liberating.

So my phone is now prompting me to update (and I can't even tell it to got to hell like I could on my S4 Mini ) but I refuse to do so until I know I can keep my root intact (or until Kingroot becomes capable of rooting that version).
Is there ANY way of keeping my root intact? Maybe by using the PC companion to update (this used to work before ICS didn't it?)? Or doing something to the phone (besides flashing firmware) to preserve the root ahead of the update?
I don't want to be installing a custom rom (and yes, I still count generic stock as a custom rom because it would get onto my phone just like any other custom rom) just to update and I absolutely need root for Link2SD so if I can't keep root in some way and Kingroot doesn't catch up then I'm going to stay on my current version forever, security be damned.

No. You can make prerooted 546 and flash it in recovery and it's only way how to retain root. As soon as you update using OTA you will loose root as system will be overwritten.

Maybe you can disable the Software Update app in settings...
By the way, however it`s your decision, I don`t understand reasons behind why not flashing latest software with Flashtool. There are sometimes nasty issues with upgrades, like people loosing LTE with OTA upgrades to 5.1.1 and so on. I would just backup everything and flash latest .570/.580 firmware (yes, even .546 is now getting outdated as upgrade to .580 becomes available to address MMS based vulnerabilities). Flashing software in flashmode is the same like flashing it through PC Companion and provides for clean way how to do system updates. You can even download version intended directly for your market/provider instead of generic one.
Flash the pre-rooted .546 zip. It has been posted weeks ago.

Because the phone isn't even two weeks old. Nowhere near time yet to risk bricking it doing non-standard things, I've already tested my luck enough by rooting it. And my region doesn't have 580 yet anyways. The inability to remove the battery makes me even more nervous about this sort of stuff, and yes I know there is a simulated battery pull, but that's still software and software gets fudged up which is the whole reason to actually physically remove the battery from your phone.
Not gonna happen thank you very much. Besides I'm never in a hurry with updating Android, it's always 2 steps forward one step back, never an all-round improvement. Some monkey of a programmer inevitably always rips out some base function every device should have, just look at ICS and the mess it's caused by choosing to ignore SD cards. Even Lollipop lacks things prior Android versions had for utterly no reason. Stagefright can kiss my you know what. Not gonna update till I can root with the click of a button avoiding almost all risk (in my mind anyways).

Well, seems you are new to XPERIA`s because there is hardly any way you can brick it. Battery pull is not a problem, because in addition to Power+VolUp reste, there is a push button hidden on the side of SIM card that triggers hard reset and switches the phone off.
But I aknowledge that you have your rights for your fears. However I wonder that with all your fears you would allow to install and run undocumented chinese app, that although roots your phone, may do other things and you will never know. Everyone is responsible for his own luck.

Yes and no. I had a neo but that was a very different device and I never felt the need to do anything custom to it (although I did check XDA for it) so it remains stock even today. Then I went to Samsung cuz everything Sony sucked at the time, at least in my price range. And now I'm back with Sony cuz there's something wrong with Samsung, dunno what, but I just don't like them so unless they're far ahead on paper I won't touch them again. (unless Sony tanks).
I didn't know about that button but I'd still rather not.
And I don't have anything sensitive on my phone so Kingroot can spy all it wants to. Of course I'd prefer it didn't, but if they absolutely have to then they're welcome to any and all info. Simply running an APK on my phone (that thousands have run before me) just seemed like the least brickable way of getting root (since I didn't have to do anything special like stuff up in the recovery or mess up an ADB command or anything like that). When I'd read about there being no root methods for 5.1.1 yet I erroneously took that to be all of Lollipop so I thought my phone was unrootable anyways when I turned it on and found it had lollipop (it was sealed so I thought it would still be on KitKat and easily rootable) so Kingroot was basically just a hail mary at the time. And since it worked so well I see no reason to ever do anything else.
As I'm sure tons of you guys know, 4.4.2 is absolute crap. Battery life, lag, GPS issues. There is barely anything good about the update. I am sick and tired of having to charge my phone almost three times a day just because the update (that Samsung claimed in my tech support chat, is "well up to date".) that isn't going to get fixed ever again.
One of these horrible features is Samsung KNOX. Just to get more customers from businesses, Samsung KNOX is ultra secure, down to the very bootloader. Basically turning into Motorola with the no-downgrade thing. Basically making it so not even older custom ROMs will flash. (I haven't flashed a ROM yet. And I'll get to why.)
Now, on HTC devices I have used, If I hated the new update, all I needed to do was Flash an older stock rom, even use an RUU if I needed to. But this update is just plain awful. And thanks to KNOX, there is no way back.
So, I have a few questions to ask.
4.3 DID come with Samsung Knox, along with the Bootloader I believe, which in my eyes, is a very narrow tunnel, but it's there.
You can uninstall Samsung KNOX through the app (If you don't have the app in the drawer, there is a way to set it up anyways. Which I did. and I pressed uninstall KNOX, but the apps are still present on the phone.)
Does this mean the security is off? Or that the 0x0/0x1 flag is off?
Is there a way to root, flash a custom 4.3 ROM, and ODIN back to Stock 4.3?
Is there even a way to do anything development-like on the device without flipping that trigger?
Or can all of this be solved by fixing settings on 4.4.2, not needing to do this anyways?
(if anyone just wants to see how bad the battery is, I can upload Battery Manager screenshots and Gsam Shots as well.)
Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some tips and maybe solutions.

Once your on 4.4.2 you cannot downgrade. It's not even an option

I heard it was strictly because of the KNOX bootloader. Which led me to believe that if I somehow rooted without tripping the 0x1 trigger, removed knox, and then flashed 4.3 through odin, that I'd be able to get back to a system version that doesn't suck.

If you have the app and the root companion for it then it should be pretty clear about which apps are in question
I also highly recommend an app called Wakelock detector (root)

If your on NE1 you can root but as far as I've read towelroot is the only option for rooting. As long as the kernel is before a certain date. I can't remember off hand what the date is however. It's hard remembering a log of this as I'm not locked down like most are

I use mine as a phone since I had a droid ultra that broke, one problem could be the battery is brand new, and I heard new batteries need to be cycled 4 times at least. Or the update is just crap. And Samsung and Verizon doesn't care, so I'm as stuck as I can be as of now, I'm guessing.

I am debating now if I shouldkeep the root or move to mmarshmallow. How smooth is marshmallow? Battery life? Does Hotspot still work?
I'd keep root.
My usb port started acting really wonky and after attempting everything I could think of, I decided to try the verizon repair assistant hoping that the 1% chance it would be a software issue. Unrooted, ran the repair assistant and next thing I know, my phone is on marshmallow, the software doesn't repair sh*t, just wipes everything, installs latest rom and then puts files back. Does not return your app data.
Anyway, long story short, my battery seems to drain quicker now, I can't deal with all the ads and I lost years of app data. Stick with root, nothing special with marshmallow.

I've had root on my phone's since the original Motorola droid days. Now that we haven't been able to unlock bootloader root is almost pointless that we can't install custom kernels, or true Roms. I've had more options being on marshmallow than 0C3 or 0E2. I don't use hotspot so I'm not sure if it still works but I was reading that people have been able to get it going without root. Android and Samsung pay works now that I'm not rooted. Samsung's themes work very well and canake the whole touch whiz experience bearable. All the addware that comes along with not being rooted is easily hidden. People complain about that it's still installed and using space on our phones but for me I haven't noticed them.

All I did was uninstall the apps which required root, then I unrooted through SU and then connected to the verizon upgrade assistant. You can also use the Samsung smart switch. Before I connected to the upgrade assistant and smart switch, but after I unrooted through SU, I rebooted my phone a few times and the custom unlock boot screen also changed to normal.

I've been rooting since the HTC Hero days and I disagree. Although we have lost a lot with the locked bootloader, it's not pointless, root still lets you keep all of your old app data with titanium backup which I personally had stored for years. It's also great for blocking ads, being on day 4 of no root, all these ads are really annoying.
I'd love to be back on OE2!

Works perfectly. I switched from OE2 to MM with no regrets. Get package disabler pro and get rid of all the bloat and it's super smooth with great battery life. The only thing I miss about not having root is I can't use better battery stats anymore. The locked bootloader and complete lack of updated ROMs was a much bigger deal to me.

The Marshmallow Odin Tar was linked in another thread. You should be able to just flash this and factory reset through the stock recovery and be set. I haven't done this but that's the route I'll be taking when I do decide to upgrade

Yes, best decision I have made marshmallow is faster and smoother, foxfi works, and you can you samsung pay.
marshmallow good, lock screen bad
Yea, marshmallow works very good on the S6.. smooth, good battery life, looks good...but that freaking swipe screen! Having to swipe the screen just to get to your lock screen is useless and irritating and people have been asking Google to change it since lollipop. I was hoping marshmallow would be different but no
Looks like no ability to root now either
I made the jump. Best decision ever. Very polished and no more force close like 5.0.2. Can still tether with foxfi which is what I pretty much only used root for.
How is the latest update? I'm still rooted and thinking about going back to stock.
Hello guys,
I bought an S7 around 2/3 months ago. I'm in the UK meaning that I don't have Samsung Pay and probably wont when it releases (Natwest didn't support the Android Pay launch so they probably won't for the Samsung Pay either so I don't really care if I root.) I'm considering about rooting the device but I have a few questions.
1. What apps and features do i lose access to when the flash counter is triggered?
2. Is there a way to reset the flash counter to get them apps to work again?
3. Is there an app which allows me to change the Ultra Power Saver apps? (I know there was one for the S5 rooted but don't know if it works on the S7 and can't currently try it due to it needing root perms)
4. Would you recommend rooting the device? (I've rooted my Moto G 2nd gen in the past but didn't really use it for all that much though I feel that with an S7 I might be able to do more things by being rooted.)
Thanks in advance
1. The only thing I think you really lose is Samsung Pay (since I rooted yesterday haven't noticed any other major issues)
2. As of right now there is no option to do this, though I know other devices have recieved the ability through triangle away. Sadly this is not currently available.
3. It doesn't currently look like it, but I think they will probably update the app (looked and the app i found was UPSM+ and it costs money so couldn't actually test)
4. I'm happy I did because I can use apps like sixaxis for using my ds4 controller, and I'm trying out viper audio which I've heard is good)
Don't know if this helps or not, I like to know I have the full control of my device, but that's just me maybe.
I always root everything, but this phone almost like a Greek Goddess - beautiful and accommodating. But after about a month I went ahead and rooted it. I am a heavy user of Google chrome and Google music radio stations and the amount of ads they push through their channels is extremely obnoxious. I feel guilty toward Greek Gods now, but I am at peace...

Would you suggest I root the phone? I'm very worried that I will not like the consequences that come with it. I've seen and looked up the issues that it has, and I have also seen that they have been fixed. My main focuses are: Battery Life, performance, texting and calling works, I get a good signal from my carrier.
Do these all work like they should? Do they work as if there isn't even root on the phone?

Being rooted itself shouldn't affect anything you listed. Now certain apps you install that require root may negatively affect battery life, and possibly performance, but texting, calling, and signal shouldn't change. Rooting essentially gives you administrator privileges like on a Windows PC, what you do from there is what will affect you the most.

Well are you using the US variant? There are some problems with the engboot but a lot of users are saying that they are resolved with the fixes they provide. A lot of people are sticking with it because they still feel the pros outweigh the cons. Something to think about if you, yourself, would prefer root over stock.

I am on the US variant. One of the main reasons I'd be rooting is for the game hacks I can get, so those are the biggest pros for me

In that case, as long as you won't miss Samsung Pay then go for it. You can always flash back to stock if you aren't happy with it. Give it a week and see if you get used to it. If not, then there is a thread here that explains how to flash back to stock completely.

if you root and want to restore later on. I Recommend flashing a recovery such as TWRP and create a backup via TWRP. once that's done, bootup device and install SuperSU. Once that's done, open app and let it flash what it need a to flash via TWRP. there should be threads here in XDA for your device. Backups can only be done with a recovery. If this is your first time. READ THE PROCEDURES CAREFULLY. No one is to blame but your self if you screw up your device. Research before acting

Of course, look into FlashFire, it should be able to backup and flash.
You will most likely forfeit your remaining manufacturers warranty.
I run the non-rooted version of the 935f exynos S7e and have superb battery life unlike some that rooted it.
Unless you are particularly adverse to TW or need to play constantly with icons I wouldn't bother. Samsungs stock browser is also very fast.

I don't really care that much about the warranty really, I've owned quite alot of devices in the past and haven't needed to use the warranty's for any of them. My device used to have really good battery life but it just feels that these days the life has gone down quite significantly.
I do like the customization which root permissions gives. I guess I might have to wait until Samsung Pay comes out to see if my bank (Natwest) supports the launch or not. I only want to root for the UPSM app really since most of the root battery saver apps don't work from my past experiences.

I did not notice any adverse effects yet, but I only installed one program requiring root - Adaway. I am sure you know, but by rooting the phone you void your warranty, trip Knox and will not be able to use Samsung and Android pay.
