[Q] [SOLVED] Signal issues and no LTE - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[SOLVED!!!] flashed factory images from google (this on it's own didn't seem to fix it.), and updated to 4.4.2 via OTA. suddenly works it again. not sure exactly why this worked when other similar things should have accomplished the same thing, must have been something wrong in the 4.4.1 build.
the issue:
my nexus 5 no longer connects to LTE ever, even though it used to get it almost everywhere.
the radio frequently disconnects. it sometimes isn't working despite showing 3-4 bars of HSPA.
the timeline:
12/03 got my nexus 5 and immediately rooted with CF-auto-root.
12/06 flashed bigxie's stock 4.4.1 rom and radio
12/08 issue started
12/09 flashed older radios, updated to 4.4.2, restored backup to pure stock 4.4, etc. etc.
12/10 issue persists, currently on stock 4.4.2 with newest radio **.23

Try to go back to radio modem **.17. I think the problem is in **.23 radio. For me **.23 gives low signal...

i have already tried this, but i'll return to **.17 and leave it there for now. i've seen a lot of people complaining of low signal on the new radios, but this doesn't seem to be the entirety of the issue for me...

well, this sucks i've flashed the stock image and it still is the same.
it has to be a hardware issue right?

Google cheaped out on antenna. Better to buy a different premium device that's not $350
Sent from **Nexus 5 signal sucks**

This is related to the new radio. Go back to the *.17 radio/modem.
I had between 3 to 10 dB less on LTE with Sprint on the new radio/modem.

Where can I see which version of the radio I am using?

go to the phones main settings, more, mobile networks, prefered network type.. is lte picked? also, you can see which radio you are using in about phone(baseband version).

Yeah its probably just radio / baseband as mentioned earlier. It's nothing to do with "cheaped out" hardware. You had signal before so likely software. Hardware is great imho. I get double the quality signal than my crappy old S3.

Am having the same exact problem. Once I updated to 4.4.2 no connection at all.
I rolled back to factory image, still same issue.

I think I've found the issue, I bet you my #[email protected] if you check your IMEI it would be 0.
Am trying to find out a way to get everything working again I'll report back if succeeded.

i am having issues too. (sprint). it seems the phones just aborts the network and i have to manually turn it on. i would not get a text for an hour then i turn on the airplane mode then off and i get like 10 texts all sent at the same time. should i take the phone back? im not rooted or anything yet.

Called T-Mobile they said they think it's a SIM issue, tried another SIM same issue.

Yeah better to just keep your original imei than to change it to 0

Fixing it is not though. That's why mobile repair shops are legally allowed to repair imei as long as you can prove it.

[Q] Nexus S weak Wifi and GSM

I recently purchased a Nexus S (M200) and I am experiencing very low Wifi and GSM signals. In fact, it's so low that I can't even make calls from GSM when indoors and need to get outdoor to get fair signals. Similar issue is with Wifi and I have to be within 10 meters to get a stable Wifi connection.
I have tried various roms and kernels but the problem remains. Even went back to stock gingerbread rom and the same problem. Any suggestion to get this fixed? Seems like a hardware issue and my phone is not under warranty!
Help appreciated.
I experienced the same thing on Cyanogen 10.1 nightly but when I was on stock 4.1 it was ok.
Maybe it's your provider which don't have a good network where you are.
I am sorry for my english I hope you will undrstand me.

You should get the most recent baseband (radio) firmware update for your model of Nexus S. If you search the forums, you should be able to find a thread all the basebands linked. Be sure to only install the one for the model you have, because the wrong one will not work.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10.1 RC1 Data Connection Issue

So I did a full clean wipe, twice just to be sure.
Flashed RC1 and everything seemed to be going great at first. Then I noticed that the signal is dropping in and out. (I live in San Diego) It won't hold a signal for any reasonable amount of time. So it drops from 4G LTE going off. I've rebooted. At a bit of a loss. I'm operating on ATT.
Should I try to reflash? I was previously running CM 10.0 with no serious issues.
I've made sure the priority is LTE/GSM
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
May be your APN? What radio are you using?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA
Same happened to me. Reflashed the modem problem fixed.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I had it on ATT Phone and then switched it to ATT LTE. Issue wasn't resolved. I tried the other APNs as well. Same result.
For poops and giggles I flashed the most recent nightly 05/06 and still had the same issue.
May seem silly to ask, but how do you flash the modem? That sounds like it could be a solution.
Edit: Ermm what radios did you flash to fix the problem?
Looking more like you need the latest UCMC1 radio. Happened with a big kernel update in the nightlies, since this is getting closer to stable, I'm sure we'll see this problem more as more people start updating.

Yea, I flashed that one after I found it on a post about the radios. It fixed the problem to an extent. However I'm getting much weaker signal than usual (although this could be the bars not displaying properly maybe, I don't want to jump immediately to a conclusion) and also am getting the data bars greyed out which means it's not.
Do you recommend reflashing the radio again?

b2tracken,
Just wanted to say thanks for your post here and that I'm experiencing the same exact thing. Yesterday I upgraded my skyrocket from an old ICS install to the latest 4.2.2 with CM 10.1, coincidentally right when this RC1 came out, so I quickly upgraded from M3 to RC1 last night. This morning I noticed that something was up with the radio and read your post. I flashed the radio to UCMC1 like you probably did and now I'm getting a connection, but about half as strong (in bars) as before the whole upgrade. Really no complaints yet - it hasn't hindered phone calls or mobile data connection - but I would be interested to find out if there is anything I can do to improve it, or configure it properly. I'm a big noob when it comes to phones.
Thanks,
Chad

The only other thing that I have changed is going and changing the APN under mobile networks to ATT LTE from ATT Phone. I'm getting about half signal also and intermittent issues with it greying out. (They seem to have not been very prevalent.) Seems that I'm not the only one with the issue which is fortunate. Give that a shot. Hopefully it gets worked out in the next release.
Att ucmc1 apn
SO I've uploaded the original UCMC1 stock ATT APN, you can just create a new APN and set it like these images.
Also wondering, after you cleanup (format data, system, cache, dalvik cache), No reboots, you do the next in the following order:
1-flash UCMC1 Radio
2-flash CM10.1 ROM (I'm still on 04/23 and everything works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272261)
3-flash gapps from 20130301 (http://goo.im/gapps)
Good luck,
Don't forget to hit THANKS if I helped you
Having the same exact issue, I've done everything stated here, only thing i did differently was updated the radio after CM.
Well the problem came back randomly with RC2 to an extent.
Now everything is showed as greyed out and no connection available including wifi.
Anybody have a clue on this?

+1. UCMC1 should be used on all current CM10.1 builds. Any older radios will cause major problems with the newer JB-based blobs we use in CM10.1 past around 4/24.
One caveat: I don't know about Rogers users, sorry guys. If you have an official JB release from Samsung, you should use that radio. (Otherwise you will have to use UCMC1)

[Q] Stock LTE vs Custom Rom None (Sprint)

As much as I deeply appreciate the N5, my area didn't support the LTE for quite some time. I left the phone on my dressor for a month. I decided to activate recently and use it for a few days. I'm a big fan of Mahdi Rom....don't want to explore much of anything else. The problem is I wanted to test LTE activation for my area. I flashed stock and updated my PRL and Profile and got two bars with decent speed. Traveled a couple miles and it kept a decent signal.
I flashed back to Mahdi and was stuck in the 3G thing again. I flashed again back to stock and the LTE was available. Back to Mahdi.... you get the point.
What do stock have at this point that custom ROMS may not have? I really want to come back to N5 but I can't justify it without LTE. I know the towers were upgraded in my area with one last data change coming in June.
Please help.

You're probably on 4.4.2, which by default gets the .23 radio. The .23 radio isn't very good for LTE reception in my experience on Sprint but the .15 or .17 do way better at picking up signal and keeping it. I get at least 10 higher dBm on the .15.

Stock might not be that great on it's own for customization but add xposed framework and gravity box and it's like a custom Rom built on stock

I have this problem as well and have yet to find a solution.
I am on Sprint and at my desk at work I get 2 bars LTE, ~4Mbps download with the latest stock ROM and radio.
With any other ROM I get 2 bars 3G and ~360Kbps download speed. Furthermore, the signal drops entirely at random and reconnects a minute or 2 later.
Can anyone provide some insight? What do custom ROMs do so differently regarding the phone service that could cause this? I'm a tech savvy web developer so if I have to build a ROM myself that removes those changes I absolutely will. Just need some initial guidance.
Thanks.

Possibly try using this---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51308741&postcount=276
Try backing up your APN settings from Sprint stock, flash your rom, flash the zip again, and restore settings.
When I was trying out MIUI, I had to do this for Sprint to get LTE working, so it might be worth a shot?

Would you say that you are getting signal similar to stock on your custom ROM now?
Also, do you think we have to do this with every new ROM flash? Mahdi is updated frequently so not sure if the settings will stick or not!
Thank you everyone who has posted and answered this long complicated problem with N5.
I know this was probably resolved months ago but I figured I would take a stab at it one last time. And I got some excellent solutions.

I've actually gotten my phone to receive LTE in places it did not before with any ROM, stock or otherwise, by further customizing my APN file. I broke incoming calls during the process but figured that out as well. However I'm without MMS now. I have the feeling that flashing my custom APNs with the stock ROM and running HFA would be going in the right direction so I'm going to do that now. I'll share my findings thus far later today.

Verizon LG-V20 (VS995) Poor network on T-Mobile = Verizon firmware restrictions?

Hi everyone,
I just switched over to T-Mobile and the first thing I noticed is that my LGV20(VS995) was not properly connecting to the T-Mobile network, I tried every possible APN setting and the connection was always unstable. Sometimes I briefly got an 4G LTE signal but when I ran countless tests and the connection speeds were always below 10mbps.
I recently flashed the Lineage OS on my phone to check if it was possibly a Verizon firmware restriction and I found that as soon as the phone booted with the Lineage OS, the phone recognized the sim card as T-Mobile, and right off the bat, the phone connected to LG LTE. I ran network tests using Ookla's Speed Test apk, and now I get consistent speeds over 30mbps, highest being nearly 90mbps. (tests were done using same server and in the same area)
My question is,
is there some sort of network band restriction embedded in the Verizon firmware? and is there a workaround for this on stock Verizon firmware?

Did you install the latest 7.1 gaps, ARM64bit?
When you go to the site select 7.1 gaps, ARM64bit (LGV20 runs on ARM64bit) & and stock. You have to install both back to back before booting up.
Do not wipe system prior to installation as lineage OS patches the system. only wipe data, cache, and dalvik.
Also in settings go to APN and check if what APN preset you have selected, the ROM comes with presets for all carriers.
Those are the 3 things that I can think of that would cause those issues.
Everything works fine for me besides the second screen at the top and Bluetooth. I haven't noticed anything else so far, I've had Lineage OS installed since 01/13.

No prob , anytime!
And yes, just switched to Tmobile since Verizon took away my unlimited data and I wasn't even near the 200 gigs..
Did u try to register the device on the tmobile network on the stock firmware via network settings?

As mentioned in OP, I tried a combination of APN settings, and yes, I tried to register the phone manually and auto.
When I registered the phone to T-Mobile LTE and the phone connects to LTE for a brief moment and goes back to switching from 3G and H+. And even when it's on "4G" the network speeds are unstable.
I noticed I wasn't the only one having this issue when switching networks from Verizon to Tmobile so I rooted the phone and installed the Not so Stock ROM and still had the same results, then I searched for a custom ROM and found Lineage OS (thank God) I installed it and right away after booting, the phone recognized the T-Mobile simcard; as apposed to stock, where it kept giving me a notification saying Verizon simcard not found even when registered to T-Mobile
if you install the US996 Rom its pretty much stock rom with LTE working. I would recommend it with the konvergence kernel because well thats really the only one I think that makes our phone boot with that rom.
When you buy a carrier branded phone it comes with certain bands activated for that network with the others disabled. While this is done at a software level, it is done on a partition and files not even remotely controlled by the ROM. Likely your bands are locked behind some level of encryption that you would need special software to unlock. IF it isn't hardware locked (which is highly unlikely since this is a global phone).
tl;dr If you want to use non-common LTE bands (2,4,etc) for other carriers you need that carrier's device or an actual unlocked device.
Actually this has been solved by installing ported firmware based on the international version of LGV20 or lineage OS. I have a constant 4G connection with MMS and calls properly functioning. Even though the verizon phones are global, at software level, certain bands/network settings are indeed restricted.

Oneplus One Constant Wifi Drops in Any ROM

Hello fellas. My OPO randomly drops from wifi in any ROM. I cant connect the internet or load anything until i close and re-open wifi. Currently i am on TugaPower N17(7.1.1) but before that i was using RR 5.8.0(7.1.1) and same thing was happening also. Is there any solution, advice for this? I think it is a modem issue. Thank you.
UPDATE: here is the list what have i done to solve this problem
use static ip-not work
forgot network and reconnect-not work
clean flash- not work
flash another rom- not work
go back full stock(cm11s and then cm13s) via fastbot- not work
flash different modem(c7)-not work
problem status- still exists and it's not about my router. happens another networks too. really i am open to suggests.
Update: i've been testing for 3 days and i can say problem is mostly gone. I went cm13s stock and after flashed tugapower via twrp 3.0.2.0 and i dont have root. With this configuration wifi problem is usually happens to me only once in a day. It s been 3days like that.

Yeah same here. I assume it a bug of Nougat. It has never happened when I'm on 5.x/6.0.
It only happens after the device lost data connection then regain data connection. If you turn on airplane mode before entering an area without data connection then turn off airplane mode after going out of it the data connection will still work.
I haven't reported it to Lineage OS Devs yet as I cannot confirm whether it's a system issue or firmware capability issue.

Nope, never faced it and it's strictly not related to Nougat at all.
Maybe its just your carrier issue.

Tried COS 13, had no issues. Not just that any Marshmallow ROM was fine. But when it comes to Nougat, I've this issue. Anyway should update to 7.1.2 and check if Google fixed it. As changelog mentioned some carrier fixes.
It might be hardware related... Does your back (battery) cover have any damage on it?
This phone has antennas located on its back cover. If yours has any damage in the place where the wifi antenna is located - that could be what's causing your drops.
I have started to have similar issues, but with the 4G LTE signal. I forced the phone to use 2G (EDGE) signal - and no more dropped calls or loss of signal.
It's sad that I can't find a back cover for it anywhere. If anyone knows where to get one - please let me know.

I recently encountered this problem after switching to RR 7.1.1. After flashing the latest c7 modem, the problem seems to fade away, at least this past 3 days. Hope that helps.
