[Q] NFC location - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone tell me whereabouts on the Nexus 5 is the prime location for NFC or tell me how to identify it. I have watched the iFixit teardown video but I don't know what NFC looks like so can't identify where it is?
Thanks

I would have thought that is where the 'centre' of the wireless charging was located and therefore would not be the location of NFC! Thanks for the response

Way to see who's connecting to my hotspot?

I 'm using an HTC inspire and I'm chilling in an airport and I decided to turn on my wireless hotspot and left it unpassworded. Is there any app for me or any method where I can find which ips and how many people are connecting to it? I'm not 100% sure what to type into Google so I thought someone could help me out.
Also if anyone can give me some terms to Google or articles for further info that'd be awesome. Thanks.

Sounds kinda shady since you can add a password to the hotspot

Did a lot of searching on the internet and was quite disappointed that our device does not have the required NFC hardware for Android Beam... Now this is very sad..

Yep, same when i just joined.
But really, most devices (in this price range) don't have it.
And just sayin', you bumped a very very VERY old thread :/

actually u can use the app named bump it doesnt require NFC.. it uses bluetooth to transfer and accelerometer to detect the sudden change of movement to transfer files form 1 device to another
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bumptech.bumpga&hl=en
thanx again shriomman thank you for your help again. i've tried Bump some time ago, and i'm not quite sure if it uses bluetooth or internet to share the files.

NFC disabled SGH-i727 (ATT) - How to enable

I noticed on GSM ARENA the specs for the Skyrocket phone say it has NFC.
So I got really excited, but then when I tried to use it, I realized it does not, in fact work.
ATT apparently marked it as not-present and disabled it. (Two problems.)
Anyhow, I found out how to enable it, and I wrote a quick Android App to verify it is present.
I did take a chance and used the Note hack as the model numbers were very close to being the same. I theorized the hardware was mostly the same, excepting the screen.
I searched and apparently nobody has announced doing this before.
The thread used was here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545751
The tool to test NFC on Skyrocket SGH-i727 is here.
Its already enabled on the ICS leaks we have.

Where is the nfc built in on our phones?? I kno on the note its built into the battery cover
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
Its on the battery itself. If you remove the sticker on the battery you can see the antenna

I read ICS has a bug where it can't initialize NFC tags.
This candhelp people on 3.x get their NFC working.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
NFC in the Skyrocket is on a chip inside the unit itself. Only the antenna for the NFC chip is located on the battery.
NFC was disables by AT&T in stock GB builds, however some custom ROMS, such as Alien, enabled it.
The 4.0X ICS releases (leaks) for the skyrocket have fully functioning NFC capabilities.
Specific phones did (or maybe) still do have an NFC bug (Verizon's Nexus) phone couldn't handle certain types of formatted tags, but the SkyRocket hasn't had this or any other problem NFC related that I am aware of.
I'm writing an NFC application.
I'll plan to upgrade to Alien in the near future. Sounds like fun.
Just the thought of putting a tag on the nightstand, in the car, ... I can do so much with it, but none the apps out there (even Samsung TecTiles App and NFC Task Launcher) do what I want to do. Not that I can run TecTiles on my phone version.
I'm currently running SKY ICS 4.2F-3B with the UCLE2 radio.
I use NFC tags in the car, at work and at home with an app called NFC Task Launcher.

My handset does not read the NFC tag until it is within approximately 1cm.

It's very close range by the nature of NFC itself. Depending on if you have a case on the phone, and which case it is, you might need to actually hold the phone to the tag and keep it there for a second. Stock NFC in the skyrocket, regardless of which ROM, gives an audible tone when reading a tag. A file is floating around XDA that will disable the tone, but it is nice to know if the tag was read correct or if there was an error.
How are you guys able to get the NFC to work? I can enable it but when I use NFC apps I get a secure settings needed.

Are you using apps that require secure settings (secure eliment)? If so, it has nothing to do with NFC, it has to do with the app.
I want it to work so bad on cm

To answer your question, yes. So which app would allow me to use NFC with out the secure elements?

Can anyone share where you purchased your tags from? I would like a handful of reliable tags but cant figure out where to get them from.

None. The Skyrocket does not have a secure eliment. There are several threads about this already.

[Q] NFC not working?

Hey guys, are you having any issues with NFC?? Sorry if this is a repost...searched for NFC, but nothing came up. I tried placing my gf's N4 next to my N5, but nothing happened..no prompt to beam. Would love to know how you guys solved this issue, or have any idea what the problem is.
Thanks everyone!
K
Sorry for the bump...just haven't heard much....saw this: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/bRGi6yhDCyE
But didn't help much! Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I know it's going to sound pretty inane, but when you try to use NFC do you have your screen on? From what I know, the NFC chip is only on when the screen is on for your device.

Thanks for the response... Is there a certain way you hold it... Like alignment wise? I tried a dozen times... Must be a hardware issue...

Is NFC turned on in the n4? NFC has been better for me with my n5 over my n4. Places that my n4c wouldn't work at, my n5 works like a charm. I've also used NFC to transfer pics from my n5 to my wife's n4 without issue. I just held the n4 centered to the back of my n5.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks for the response! Yeah NFC is enabled on both devices... I also tried using NFC testing apps to see if it recognizes it... It says NFC is there and enabled, but can't be sure how accurate that is.

i dont really know if that is an issue but my friend has galaxy s4 and we he tried to transfor a pic to my n5 with nfc it didnt work but when we tried to transfor something else like web page it worked
Yeah not sure what's going on...

I have the same thing. Trying to transfer a photo from Nexus 5 to S3 Mini
Nexus 5 makes a noise and says touch to beam so I do and then it says no connection
If I do it with a web page its no problem
I'm trying to transfer the photo using File Expert HD, maybe thats the problem
Using File Expert HD to NFC transfer between S3 Mini and My Nexus 7 tablet works fine
Mine isn't working at all! Won't even say touch to beam. I put it to the back of a nexus 7.2 and a Gnote 3 and nothing! Won't even recognize anything. There's got to be something causing this problem because my NFC was working before. I used it several times to transfer photos and now all of a sudden I get nothing??

I had a problem with NFC too. It wasn't working with SGS3 and Nexus 7... So I opened a back cover and raised those 4 pins just a little bit, put everything together and boom - now it works! Obviously a bad contact issue.

I tried that with no results.
Edit: I tried again, this time scraping the contacts on the back cover. Worked great!

Hey how did you guys do it? I'm having the same issue after replacing my screen. Do I raise the four pins on the nfc board on the motherboard? And how did you scrape the contacts on the back cover SoTacMatt?
I'm not gonna try anything before I hear from you guys. I just paid $50 for the screen and seriously don't wanna go paying $25 for the nfc.
Edit: Nevermind fixed it  apparently everyone is jumping the gun in this thread. This was the fix for me.

[Q] Feature Similar to Samsung Galaxy S5 Download Booster

The S5 seemed relatively unimpressive, however the download booster feature seems interesting where it uses lte and wifi for data. I was curious as to whether someone could port that over to the Nexus 5 or create their own implementation.

Anyways I think it's hardware

I think it is implemented in software. There is a demo for using both LTE and WiFi on Galaxy S2 on YouTube already. (Search for "Energy-efficient multi-link video streaming on smartphones")
This would be REALLY nice feature to have. I actually might root for it!
Im pretty sure that it is software related, because I remember reading about an app for android that does this for you, but for the life of me can't remember the name of the app.
Edit: found it http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...s-mobile-data-wifi-for-faster-internet-speed/

oh i am going to test
Any feedback? 4/5 stars on the Play Store from a N5 user.
Unfortunately I have no WiFi connection to test...
My LTE connection blows away my home Wi-Fi connection.... I don't see how I could benefit from a booster. I would think it would utilize bandwidth from my cellular data connection and not touch my Wi-Fi. Just another gimmick to pay twice as much as you need for a device imho.
