[Discussion] Your top 5 features you'd like to see in the SGS5? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

What is up guys! With Galaxy S5 leaks starting to come out of the woodwork, it seemed like the right time to start discussing what you'd like to see. Instead of going right into listing off specs, lets start this discussion with Project Ara/PhoneBlocks in mind. If you were given a list of options to build your own S5, what would you put in it? I don't think were too far off from this, and if not the S5, I'd say by the S6 this will be standard.
Heres my own personal S5 wishlist, bumped specs all around are almost a guarantee, especially with Samsung at the wheel, so I wont be listing any of those. In no particular order, here's my S5 top5.
1. Tempered Sapphire Screen. Gorilla Glass is fine if your goal is to save a few dollars, but if you end up paying $50 dollars to house that fragile screen, I'd rather just pay more for a screen I'll never have to worry about scratching, even if I have a fist of sand in my pocket.
2. Self Healing Plastic. with a tempered sapphire on the front, and self healing plastic on the back, I might be looking at my first caseless phone in years!
3. MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission). with all this fighting over NFC, and 99% of retailers not even supporting it anyway, phones with MST can tap and pay at a mom 'n pop card reader, with no additional equipment needed. this is what should have been implemented from the start.
4. bring back the dedicated DAC. this ones probably not as important to many people as it is to me, but as someone loves loves loves listening to music on their phone, the S4 is just so disappointing when put next to the S3. in fact i still own my S3, and just use it as an in-car music player, because it just sounds that much better.
5 mouse over with air gesture when I first learned the Galaxy S4 was going to have hover gestures, I thought finally we can replicate mouse hovering for web pages, the single biggest drawback of smartphone web browsing today. but Samsung didn't implement this, in fact they didn't do anything whatsoever with it at all.. does anyone still even remember our phones have this? such promising technology gone to waste. Samsung if you're listening, million dollar idea right here ^.
well there it is guys, in no particular order, my s5 top5. id love to know, whats your top 5? swiveling camera? different form factors? maybe a flipstyle phone? leave your wishlist below!

The only feature I want the S5 to have is for TouchWiz to feel optimized. If they can get it to at least half the way iOS feels, I'd stick with it forever. Nothing else I care about.

I couldn't agree more. I actually love touchwiz, I just wish it was smooth and fluid as AOSP. The whole reason I have issues with "crack-flashing" is because our devs tend to create a more fluid feel in a custom ROM than with stock.

Hi,
With all the rumours about an alum. case, I hope at least for
1- Removable Battery
2- SD card slot for storage
3-Less Samsung and/or ATT bloatstuff
4-Curved glass seems pretty cool!!
5-Faster processor/ more ram
Overall I am pretty happy with my S4 except for the
locked bootloader
Ken

I do not want aluminum. I had the HTC Inspire 4g. That had an aluminum housing. Yeah it was sturdy and felt great, but any kind of dent in it made the buttons completely unusable. It would either pin the buttons down in a closed circuit state, making the device unusable or put pressure on the screen making it crack.
What I would like to see is a slightly more robust plastic housing with a light yet strong aluminum internal frame like the Captivate I couldn't break that thing with a 20 ft drop. Impact zones. The S4 does not seem to have any at all.
They seriously need to either optimize TW or rebuild it. I love it, but it is lacking so much in terms of smoothness.
The option to unlock the bootloaders. Use KNOX and a warning that states that once the bootloaders are unlocked, we agree to have a voided warranty and understand that Samsung nor AT&T will not support that device anymore. Or use the IMEI to flag it. I am all for losing my warranty to do what I want with my device.

[Q] Nexus one versus Nexus S

Do you really think the Nexus S will make half the splash in the phone world that the Nexus One did? I am no longer an android fanboy as I feel android has passed it's prime but I do want to pose this question. I mean the Nexus S seems good on paper but really all it is is another galaxy S device with a front facing camera. The processor is still the same which will likely lead to the same buffer issues that caused lag on the other devices (though some blamed this on touchwiz) and it still feels very cheap and plasticky. I think the majority like at least a little heft with their phones, not a paperweight but enough so you know that if you drop it it wont break like an egg. I wanted to find out the opinion of the XDA community

I'm thinking quite of the opposite: I think the Nexus S will have a bigger impact on the phone world, since you're able to buy it from real stores and more places than just online without a contract. Most people who buy cellphones don't want to put down the whole $$$ right then.
And what I'd be curious of: Have you held one in your hand and tested it on beeing "cheap and plasticky"? I have a Galaxy S and I'm pretty happy with it, I don't need any type of metal to ruin my reception.
Unfortunately it is a little "plasticy." I'm afraid to set my Nexus down on any surface that might possibly scratch plastic, and when it's hot my hand gets VERY sweaty on the plastic backing. It's also an ungodly fingerprint magnet. One of the prime reasons I'm switching to a G2. Why have a "super sexy" phone if it's only "super sexy" after I scrub it with a microfiber cloth and set it on my desk without touching it?
* no led notification
* no expandable memory
* made by Samsung
These are big disappointments for me. I don't want an " i " like device so stupid how Samsung is trying to model after it. Wish HTC made the successor to the nexus, at least updates with them are reasonable.

To be fair, the updates with the Nexus S are handled by Google and therefore basically instant.

Really didn't know that my experience with Samsung was based off the fascinate and Samsung support was lack there of. But it makes sense it's a Google phone so it will get the updates quicker..duh. lol wasn't thinking.
I think the Nexus S will make a very little splash compared with the Nexus One. When the N1 came out it featured hardware many had never seen before (One of the first phones with a 1ghz processor, I believe the only one that came before it was the HD2 in Europe). The Nexus S is laughable by comparison and I will tell you why.
-It has the nearly same specs as Galaxy S devices
It it bad enough that this phone did not live up to expectations by using the same hardware that existing phones already have, it makes the situtation worst when every major U.S. carrier ALREADY has a variant of nearly the same hardware.
-No Micro SD card slot
I feel this will be the future but there is a small problem with this. The Galaxy S line has 16gb of onboard storage AND a Micro SD slot, why take something away?
-No Notification Light
On my phone when I recieve and SMS or E-Mail my notification light starts blinking to let me know I have something to check. On this device (as well as SGS variants) you have no Notification Light so you must hit the power button just to check to see if you have a notification.
-It only uses T-Mobile's 3g band (in the US)
With Google's advertising campaign they are obviously taking a page out of Apple's playbook (If you have seen the commercial you know what I am talking about). The Nexus One was available on At&t so it provided users an alternative to getting an iPhone to get the best hardware and software Android has to offer (at the time of the initial launch anyway). If the first Nexus device had At&t 3g bands then surely Google would want to compete with Apple again right, wrong! Why take an Apple-esque approach to an Ad campaign and not compete on the same carrier?
-No HSPA+
We have already addressed this only has 3g on T-Mobile. T-Mobile has been rolling out HSPA+ pretty aggressively as of late to try to compete with WiMax and the soon to be LTE devices. You would think Google's premier device would be rocking the new 4g data speeds but surprising it isn't. The G2 and MyTouch 4G take advantage of HSPA+ but the supposed "Pure Google" device doesn't, horrible.
The selling points of the Nexus S aren't very strong to the average consumer. NFC is nearly useless right now outside of scanning Google provided material. "Pure Google" is probably the worst niche of all. The majority of consumers that buy Android devices do not know the advantages of Pure Google or know the difference betweens Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread. To make matters worst the consumers who do know the advantages of a "Pure Google" experience stray away from the Nexus S because they realize the hardware isn't much better than their existing devices. At&t, Sprint, and Verizon customers aren't going to switch because they have a similar device without switching carriers and T-Mobile customers will get the more mainstream, HSPA+ touting MyTouch 4g. I think the Nexus One should have been the device sold in stores and the Nexus S should have been the device sold online only.
Rant, Fin.

You don't expect them to start designing the next phone a month or two before it is released do you?
It's not like it is being released then
The mockup in that picture is awful - a Galaxy iPhone 5, essentially. And, the info is generic, too.
Happy with my phone, regardless of unsubstantiated rumors for the next generation.

Noooooo Just bought the S3 and now I'm locked into a 2-year contract.
My Smartphone addiction must be getting bad as I cant wait for another new phone already
Bring on the S4 sammy.
my hopes for the S4:
Flexable OLED 1080p screen (no pentile) possibly the addition of a Yellow sub pixel
quad core with beefed up GPU
32/64GB with expandable SD
better speaker with Bose style wave guide technology (let me dream people)
no buttons
Ear piece using bone vibration technology (may be a little much)
f1.8 12MP camera with glass optics and 12,800 ISO with dedicated noise reduction plus 120fps high speed recording
(this phone should focus on camera and screen technology)
less rounded edges so the screen can reach the corners better
guess i could go on for a while but these were my top picks

All I want is my hardware keyboard back. Not having it makes using the device a chore I grow less and less fond of each time.
For as wildly obsessed with android I became, the S3 is fast dragging me to the point of not even wanting to charge my android.
No hate on the S3 specifically, just happens to be the first smartphone i've had without keyboard shortcuts and is my introduction to this on-screen keyboard mess.
Just not for me...

Lets be honest guys. Samsung is a publicly traded company, and as such their value is dictated by people's opinions of them, and anything they sell is really just gravy. Announcements come fast and furious, because its really the only way to stay above water, especially when it comes to technology.
Picture this, you just sold 20 million units and still boast one of the most sought after products in the market. Yet people are more concerned that Apple, your largest rival, just took a billion dollars out of your pocket. More so, this 20 million unit jewel is currently being targeted for discontinuation by the company that won this judgement. Whats the best way to keep your value up? Announce a replacement of course!
I'll concede that anyone who bought this phone on release will probably have to sit out the s4 if they refuse to pay full price for a phone, but to say its going to be on shelves anytime before the s3 drops off the top selling units page is just bat crazy. Its just bad business, and Samsung is way too smart a company for that.
This is about the 20th thread about this on XDA already

It's not about usefulness. Samsung incorporated it as the very first company, meaning everyone after this will not be able to claim 'innovation'.
Nobody thought 5.5" on a Note 1 would be useful, either. Nor when the first smartphone came out, for that matter. And look where we are today.
No, this little edge may not have much use. (On that I agree)
However, this is just the first step. Someone had to be the first, and now it opens the door for other designs, with dual-side screens and full-wrist smart watches a future possibility. Now that, I can see being.

What bothers me is the two step forward, one step backwards approach. They claim no one used USB 3 so back to USB2, how about fixing stupid USB3 so it's autodetecting, not obscure cumbersome manual menu switch that expires as implemented on Note3? Especially now that more computers actually have USB3. And how come GS5 is waterproof and Note 4 not, is Note 4 not expensive enough to be worth protecting from accidental water damage? If the edge screen is properly implemented it could become standard in the future, but I keep on thinking how do you pick up and hold the phone without accidently activating any of the menus there.
Well, time will tell, I'll check it in the store when available but doubt I will be getting it.

Still don't see why people want their phones waterproof that badly;
The costs are just alot higher, cause the design needs to be smart enough for it.
To test the ip standards seems to be expensive two..
For me;
I am not planning to swim with my phone, The phone is to big to drop into the toilet, I don't need a stupid thing to close down my micro usb port.
Therefor, My Note 3 has been wet from the rain already like 3-4 times. No problem(So did my gear which hadn't have any problems as well).
Okay, if you can have it; a waterproof phone is awesome, but it just ruins the design.
If you are using such expensive phone, be carefull with it. I never have had a phone with a broken display.. Let me say it better; I never had a phone with scratches that came within my usage. Not even the chrome stripe that comes around the note 3 is damaged.. Just use the proper case and tempered glass..
If you are in need of a phone that needs to be dustproof, waterproof, shockproof; This is not the device you are searching for..
To tell you another story;
I have just bought a One M8 because the build quality is superb, I absolutely love the metal.. Now the story continues and I am using that stupid case that got with it, and it gives protection.. but the build is gone.. I can't go without the case, but I also can't go with something around my phone that ruins that beautiful build. Thats why I have decided to sell my one m8 again(lol). I am just way too carefull with the things I appreciate.
Waterproofing doesn't ruin the design, it should be invisible on the outside, (how Sony Z series or GS5 design is ruined by waterproofing?) which is kind of moot point for you (and me) anyhow since you're using case.
If your phone was wet 3-4 times already (especially that you claim to be so careful with it), you're just lucky, my friends Note 3 stopped working first time he got caught in heavy rain. After 5 days of drying it, it seems to work again but just luck something didn't got burn and he was without a phone for 5 days, since at the beginning it wouldn't even boot. USB port doesn't have to have cover, it could be sealed inside with contacts exposed.
I guess everybody has it's own vision of what his/her perfect phone should be, I'm missing waterproofing the most, as the Note3 meets all my other expectations. I bet your change your mind about waterproofing the first time your expensive phone gets water damage.
We even had a guy on this forums dropping his 2 weeks old Note3 into Jet A fuel tank so things happen when you least expect it.
Don't misunderstand me, Note4 is very nice phone, but would I really see much difference between CPU running 2.3GHz and 2.7 GHz or higher screen resolution? GPU needs to be faster just to keep up with larger number of pixels on screen. Waterproofing would give me piece of mind every time I take my kids to waterpark, beach or just get stuck outside in bad weather.
If it wasn't for S-pen I would look for new phone elsewhere, but there is really no alternative if you want s-pen.

Well, there are now 2 of us, who knows? A couple more 915A's and maybe we can entice a Dev to work at unlocking the phone. Tried an online service, but even for $30 they couldn't do it. Oh well.... :crying:
if you want root so bad, just sell the att note edge and get tmobile edge.
it works on att lte.
So there is the problem, I have my Edge on the Next plan, and even if I get enough to pay it off early, I am sure that tmo will not let me buy it on the same 30 month plan so I can use it on AT&T. And really don't have the money to pay cash for it at this time. If root never comes, then I will still live and will still love this phone. It's just that it would be nice to have root.

Yeah, this is getting slightly aggravating. Battery life, and phone slow down is getting progressively worse, I REALLY wish there was root for this thing.
The sidebar is a novelty that unless there was some actually use for it, it's simply "in the way". Trying to use the phone with one hand, especially the right hand, its aggravating because your palm constantly touches the edge screen which will open apps on the side screen, or it registers as a multitouch and the main screen goes bonkers.
Not to mention there really are no decent cases that I have found.
The phone is a powerhouse, sure, but Touchwiz and bloatware have really choked this thing down, its like a restrictor plate on some of those old I4 rally engines.
I miss my S5 Active. I'd trade this thing straight across for an S5 at this point. Or even an S4. Ads make me want to punch babies.

WOW, I can definitely tell the Edge is not the phone for you. As a matter of fact, you might want to stay away from all the Note Class phones. I don't think anything that size is meant to be used one-handed. Use a different launcher to stop that one-handed palm launch. When I was using the Next launcher, no palm launches. Because the Edge treats the launcher as an app, and hide it when in use. You have to swipe it to get to the icons there.
I find the edge useful. But I do use the phone two-handed 99.999% of the time. As far cases are concerned I don't really use them. I have a bumper-guard on mine. But I only have it to give minimal protection, since I don't drop the phone. I do have a belt case to carry it around work, but normally it just goes in my shirt pocket. I liked the S5 active, but like the Edge better. And who knows? By the time I get the hang of a Note Class phone, they will come out with something I want even more. LoL

8 generations of HTC & I switched... Initial Thoughts

I never thought I would be writing anything like this but wanted to share my initial thoughts of this device. I have been extremely loyal to HTC over the years with my first real smart phone being the Touch Pro 1, TP2, evo4G wimax, evo3D wimax, evo LTE, M7, M8 & M9. With rumors of the M10 ditching boomsound this year, I had enough. I firmly believed HTC designed and manufactured superior products over Samsung for many years but could never get ahead due to poor leadership at HTC such as messing up the camera & marketing to name a few. That said I don't think that is the case anymore. I saw the build quality jump on the S6 & now with the release of the S7 I don't see how HTC can keep running if the leaked M10 renders are true. I have worked and setup many Samsung phones over the years but this is my first real hands on for myself and wanted to share my initial thoughts on what stood out.
Build Quality: My M9 still feels more solid & premium over the S7 edge. That said the S7 edge certainly looks the part of premium and still a huge step up in build quality over previous S5 and below models.
Bloat/UI: I have always not liked TouchWiz and always preferred sense. While this is certainly more feature packed, many things on the phones are worthless and it still feels pretty bloated. I really miss the big HTC weather clock I have been using since the touch pro.
Boomsound: One of my favorite features of the M9 which rumors of ditching it on M10 caused me to be done. While the speaker sounds decent on this phone, covering it up while watching videos is annoying and you just can't replace front facing stereo speakers.
Rooting: I have been rooting for years, HTC has also been fairly root friendly with the exception of the evo3D and encrypted boot loader. M7, M8 & M9 I have all S-OFF for full control which I love. With Samsung having Knox, I have to choose between a warranty void or locked down phone. Yes HTC voided the warranty as well but if you had S-OFF you could reverse everything there is no e-fuse. Xposed on touchwiz roms from what I know isn't as friendly on Samsung devices having to use custom versions to get it to work.
Those things I already was well aware of, so the things I like so far that have stood out to me.
The screen: Higher resolution, always on display and colors have more pop. Screen is very nice, especially with a little bigger display. The edge I find pretty cool as well.
Notification Light: Much bigger and noticeable light on the Galaxy the my HTC. Might not be a big deal to some, but I like it.
Thin: Feels thinner and lighter than my M9 while still having a bigger screen.
Gear VR: While this is super cool and pretty wild, the resolution on the Gear VR sucks. Feels like watching 240P youtube videos. That said it's still pretty cool, it's cheap and I'm sure future versions are going to be insane.
Buttons: While I find a finger print scanner worthless, have a physical home button I like along with back lit back and recent apps keys vs having them on screen. I highly prefer this layout over on screen which means more usable screen. The M7 had this and the M8 they moved to on screen while still have the HTC black bar which I thought was just stupid and wasted screen space. I like how Samsung has it layed out.
I haven't had the device that long but this is my initial reaction after a short period of time with the phone. I wouldn't be oppose to going back to HTC in the coming years (if they are even around) if they can get there act together as I do prefer a lot of things on the HTC. There are a lot of other features other people might value more than me that I didn't even mention. My biggest concern at this point in time is if I want to trip knox or not as you can't go back. I'm leaning towards yes even if it breaks Samsung Pay as I really like having xposed assuming it works on this phone and of course full root access which I have become dependent on.
I understand what you are saying. I've been a completely dedicated HTC customer for about 12 years. My first HTC was the PPC-6600 Harrier (back in 2004 I believe). The last one was the OneMax. I have not been happy with anything they have made after that. They have cut corners and sacrificed features in an effort to save money. When they should be building better products.
So I decided to try Samsung. Although it is smaller than I would like, I'll make the best of it. But if the Edge Plus comes out is "Sept" as I've read, I'll most likely go with it.
I'm not going to compare the features of these phones. But I will say this, I do like Sense system more. And as soon as I root this it will have Sense apps and widgets.
I just read that root may not be possible on this phone. I'll give it a week and see how I really like it. But I'm thinking of taking it back and waiting on a larger screen Samsung or HTC.
It's not bad. I just don't know if I like it enough without root to keep it for very long. And if I'm going to take it back in don't have long.
Wow you have been even more loyal then me. HTC TP1 was my first real Smart phone. I use to buy Samsung flip phones A940 if you remember that which by the way had awesome speakers on it and even an accelerometer. I have actually been pretty happy with HTC's products. Boomsound on the M7 was fantastic, they did mess up the camera though while it took good lowlight shows, the resolution was awful and 4MP just isn't enough. Part of the reason I stayed away from the Galaxy for so long, I just viewed it as an over priced plastic phone which didn't feel premium at all. I noticed a change on the S6 last year which is when I for the first time considered changing. People didn't brace the M9, so they release the A9 to compete with itself just idiot leadership at HTC. Now the M10 no boomsound? They just seem to be going backwards. While I already really miss my front facing speakers on the M9, the features on the S7 edge are amazing. Not only am I done with HTC for the time being, but I have kept lots of friends loyal to the HTC brand. Not saying I wouldn't ever go back but losing super loyal customers like yourself & I is what could put HTC under.
Looks like this phone may never have root or anything custom as the bootloader is locked. Coming from S-OFF devices to a device locked down like fort knox sucks. I already miss root, Xposed, AdAway & TI just to name a few. Even if we get root it will trip knox rendering certain features useless like Samsung Pay which I would prob rather have root than Samsung Pay but I haven't tried it out yet. I'm gonna stick with it for now see what happens, I just think devices are only going to become more secure and locked down as we move forward.
As far as you waiting for the edge +, it will be interesting how they do that this year if at all since the S7 edge really isn't that much smaller than the Note 5 where last years S6 edge was smaller. I really like the size of the phone, lots of screen but doesn't feel too big. I do miss sense as well, I have never been a fan of TouchWiz and the amount of bloat on this thing is unbelievable but it can be cleaned up. I knew what I was getting into. I'm gonna stick with it for now as I think the pro's outway the cons at least at the moment.

TW vs Sense... minor annoyance. I got used toit, I'm sure you can too.
Root vs Samsung pay... well, that's a little bit more complicated. Samsung pay works only with certain (quite limited) cards and banks. So far for me only AMEX and Citi credit card are supported. You need to find out first, whether you have a card that's supported otherwise this whole dilemma is moot. I live without root since last year's Note 5. Samsung pay is just more valuable to me than a few tweaks I can easily live without. It's quick, convenient and it just works. The only place so far I found it doesn't work is Walmart. Because Walmart registers don't support NFC and if you have a card with chip, they won't accept magnetic swipe. (which Samsung pay simulates if no NFC is possible)..

Samsung Pay has been working for me at Walmart since Sept of 2015. I use a chipped Chase visa card. Be sure to tell the cashier it's a credit card & tell them you have the security numbers if they ask (which is the last 4 digits of your CC).

I might have to give it a try at Wal-Mart and see how I like it. I had Google Wallet back in the day on evo LTE with very limited retailers at the time it would work at. When it did work it wasn't the smoothest so since then I haven't been using anything. I don't see Samsung Pay being valuable to me, but you make a good point if it doesn't work for my cards then decision should be easy. That said if the bootloader is locked from what I have read this year it is on Sprint then unless that changes there will be no knox trip anyway. I'll give it a whirl see if I like it, I have a chase card I can try at wal-mart next time I go.

Your Walmart must have upgraded their card readers. The Walmart I'm using does not accept magnetic swipe if your card is chipped. It will reject it and say to use the chip reader. Samsung pay emulates magnetic swipe so when I try it, it tells me to use the chip reader. They also don't have a NFC sensor, so I can't use it there. But that's a minor annoyance. I'm not frequent shopper at walmart anyway.

Chase should work AFAIK.
I've tried Google Wallet before too but that was a huge PITA. This is a completely different game. This Samsung Pay thing is actually useful.

My Walmart has a card swipe On the right side + a chip card receptacle on the bottom.
Sometimes it doesn't work the first time but it's been due to cashier mistakes.

That wouldn't surprise me at all.
I don't have to be right ALL the time.
Been using htc android phones since the Dream on t-mobile.
I jumped on the S7 edge because of the aesthetically pleasing display, but more importantly because I had an old M8 that was chugging along. If the M10 had come out this month I would probably went with that. I may return the S7 edge and wait out till the M10 due to the seemingly large hurdles with how locked down it is.
Shame, since I really believe this is easily the best Samsung phone I have touched, but no foreseeable xposed functionality is a big no no in the long-term for me.

I'm missing Xposed as well
Still liking it? I had my OneMax replace by Asuron. I got the LG flex 2. Its not a bad phone. With Xposed, debloated andall the Sense apps; the damn thing acts just like an HTC. But with a better screen.
Ive read the HTC 10 is going to be a tiny 5.1".
Ill hang on to this till someone makes a rootable 5.7-5.9"
