Has anyone who had never unlocked nor rooted been able to use motochopper to root after the most recent update? I believe the exploit is blocked but have read occasional posts suggesting otherwise.
thanks!

I updated to OTA 9.18.79 yesterday I have never unlocked my bootloader; however, I was rooted. I lost root and then tried motochopper, it failed. I think I am hosed and fear I will never be able to get root back.

The person who developed motochopper told the community that motochopper would be his very last exploit for Motorola devices. He said that the easy exploits are mostly gone now and the difficult ones aren't worth the effort. Moreover, he tells us that we should not buy phones that are locked to begin with if we value the ability to root.

Rooting is not really the issue. You can just flash back to pre 9.18 then root and use Voodoo rootkeeper to keep root after the update.
The real issue is not being able to unlock the bootloader after this update even after flashing back down. In other words, if you received this update and did not previously unlock the bootloader, you cannot unlock the bootloader at all....

I haven't tested this step by step, but I'm pretty sure these are the exact steps.
WARNING: This does wipe your phone, read the utility warnings and instructions (ex. make sure usb debugging is enabled, etc)
1. Download utility here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439
2. Choose option 1 to flash back down to stock 4.1.2
3. Choose option 3 to root phone
4. Download Voodoo OTA root keeper from the app store.
5. In Voodoo OTA root keeper:
a. Backup root
b. Temp unroot
6. Download and install latest update
7. In Voodoo OTA restore root.

finally decided to let the OTA to 79 happen. I followed these steps and worked perfect still have root on 79.
Hi, somewhat of an Android hacking noob here. I rooted in ICS before the JB upgrade, used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and all that, but it didn't seem to carry over. Ever since the OTA upgrade, Voodoo Rootkeeper says root has indeed been restored and the superuser.apk and the su binaries are still in my /system directory but I have lost all root permissions. Therefore I am unable to unroot using traditional methods.
I've tried to re-root using motochopper (on both Linux and Windows) to no avail and just learned that the Razr BL is now apparently locked for good after the latest update. I wanted to break away from Google and install CyanogenMod but it doesn't seem likely anymore.
I'd like to wipe the slate clean, revert back to stock ROM, and then root, but apparently I've doomed BL unlocking capabilities via OTA upgrades and can't flash anymore. It seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Can't root, can't unroot/unlock/revert. I've been scouring forums but am just getting more confused. Am I totally screwed?

As far as unlocking your boot loader, your screwed. However you should still be able to root. See my instructions in an earlier post. It flashes you back down to stock 4.1.2 (prior to the latest update). From there you can root using the same tool. Honestly I would just stay on that update because it provides better battery life, but if you wanna update use voodoo. I did this early this week and it worked fine.

Okay, maybe I got mixed up here. I thought that in order to flash any ROM the bootloader needs to be unlocked. I'll read up and give the root a try.

By flash I mean revert you back to stock 4.1.2. The unlock boot loader allows you to flash aosp roms. There are stock based roms you can flash with safe strap, but honestly I don't see big differences from plain old stock.

I am thinking about flashing back and rooting and unlock the boot loader and start running custom roms.
I am not impressed with 79 at all...
Seems like the Radio is not working as well kinda like the Samsung SIII signal just sucks.
If you're on .79 with locked bootloader you will never be able to unlock bootloader again.

Latest .79 Update
(Droid Razr xt926) Really don't want to even deal with this latest update I'm rooted unlocked and flashed to TWRP recovery...will I be forced to eventually? and is there a way to stop the prompts (update messages) I'm getting on my phone every few hours?
Is that possible? All the root tools threads I seem to be able to find on here and rzr forum have posts that say it doesn't work with the latest OTA update. Am I missing something here? Is Motorola so actively patching everything that there is no way to get root if the device has the latest OTA update?
Thanks.
Root is still possible by rolling back to the older firmware but you can't unlock the bootloader.

Oh, since it is a 925 (probably international edition), can't I just ask Motorola to unlock the bootloader? https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Also, how does one roll back to older firmware? RSDLite and flashing older stock, like on Atrix HD?

Nice, I will give this a try. However, why the 900+ MB Lite? Wouldn't the 3 MB Ultra-Lite work for just rooting and unlocking the bootloader? Or did you have to use the stock stuff as well?
Also, did you try the Toolkit 4.0? Did that fail as well? As far as I can see, both use the same methods for unlocking and rooting!
Cant remember now, I tried all the others and none worked and I stumbled across it
I think the micro download was not enough (sorry cant recall what extra was needed) but I remember on the micro the numbers on the menu did not match with the commands (look at the batch file) but the normal was fine

Hello,
I have recently bought from eBay a beautiful new HTC One SV and I wonder why I cannot receive the latest 4.2.2 upgrade through OTA.
I asked the HTC support in UK and they told me the phone is branded Virgin UK and I have to wait for them to release the upgrade. But I read on other post that the upgrade is already available from Virgin mobile.
I tried to unlock the phone, doing several factory reset, changed the sim to a different provider, but no success... Now the phone is re-locked.
This is the current configuration:
sw: 2.14.401.6
CID: HTC__001
Android version: 4.1.2
Can somebody please help me to get the latest 4.2.2 update?
Thanks!
Alberto

Hi Modding.MyMind,
Thanks for your answer. I have tried yes, several times but no success... It always says your sw is the latest version.
When I switched on the phone the first time, there was a system update of about 34Mb and nothing more.
The sw is still 4.1.2.
You may need to sit and be patience then. Sometimes a new device that has been activated needs to be processed in the system through their database. Not sure how long you have had your device activated though. I would think at most, a week (and that is pushing it lol).

If the update is already available for your device with virgin mobile then I would assume someone has already provided a download link for the ota. However, I don't have it, but I would suggest downloading it if you can find it and attempt that route.

I have activated the phone about 3 weeks ago... Where do you think can I find the right OTA? And how can I install it manually?
Thanks!
Android ruu. Google that. There is a website by that name. Scroll down to K2 and select the link. There you can find OTA's. Though, I do not know if it has the one you need honestly. Also, check out @old.splatterhand index thread. You would need to place it on your internal sdcard and then reboot. If the right one you should get a notification at the top of your phone.

In my opinion, this the available "free" software of an unbranded phone.
Regarding htcdev.com, Virgin mobile Software number should be 2.14.652.6 or 2.14.351.6 (if i'm not totally wrong).

Put the update on your device's SD card and flash it from within recovery (TWRP, CWM, possibly stock)
I don't think you can flash OTA zips through custom recovery....

Fair point. So, with stock recovery installed, we could apply from sdcard or apply from phone storage
Internal sdcard (phone storage)
Sent from my C525c using Tapatalk
---------- Post added at 11:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 PM ----------
An OTA is downloaded in the /storage/sdcard0/Download/ directory and once applied it is removed. However, if saved and not applied it will remain there. Anyways, that is the location where it is normally stored when you get that notification (assuming it is the proper OTA).
Sent from my C525c using Tapatalk
---------- Post added at 11:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:51 PM ----------
But I would think that being on the root of the internal sdcard is fine. Though personally have not given that a go for myself so I am only guessimating on that one lol.

---------- Post added at 11:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:53 PM ----------
Actually, now that I think of it.... Stock recovery comes with a prebuilt feature very similar to CWM. So with that said, guess the location wouldnt necessarily matter if applied that way.

Hi,
I was recently given a stock Verizon SCH-I525 but unfortunately they had upgraded it to android 4.3. I have tried almost every way to root this thing with no luck. How do I go about rooting this version? If I can't, is there a way to flash it back to one of the older versions and then root it?
Thanks
