my previous phone was a locked one. to take ota updates i would have to revert back to a stock backup to take the ota. with n5, is this still necessary? can i simply flash a 4.4.1 rom like the updated cataclysm to get up to date since it includes the 4.4.1 kernel too? or am i missing other necessary files from the official ota?
Well yea. If you flash a rom based on 4.4.1 you should have all of the official changes merged into the rom.

Except for the new bootloader and radio. I would go back to stock, flash the update, and then flash a ROM. Then you'll be all 4.4.1.

However, to answer your question, you should just install a custom ROM. They are nicer.

install a custom rom.
Have you ever rooted it, or flashed any custom roms? I think that can interfere with OTA updates.
Either way, all you have to do is install a custom rom. I recommend the EOS ICS 1.0.0 rom. Check it out here.
Nightlies are better and have more features.

No! Nightlies are different
Only use nightlies if you know what it is. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has difficulties updating his stock rom...
Getting the update message on EOS 1.0.0 now. I will agree this ROM is much better than stock

Ya think?
I have a few questions though. Will I have to flash an ftf again .__.? cause I unlocked my BL.
And if they've updated the kernel will Thunderzap 3.0 be compatible?
We may receive it next week. Though only a bug fix. Hope it gives remedy to every bug and will not introduce new bugs

Probably indeed a bug fix for those with bugs with the 4.2 release. I haven't even got that here in Portugal, lazy carriers, unless they're waiting for the fixed version.
Not sure this is the right place to post this but after the new update I see on my intent data usage an unknown (to me) process using around. mb..τόσα process on my phone is called " -11159 ".
Anyone know what's the row of this app?

It's always better to flash newer updated ftf because it will have latest baseband and eliminate any conflict with updated ROMs.
For kernel you can reflash Thunderzap 3.0 again because custom kernels always better than stock.
Most probably this will be an update with some bug fixes and updated Sony apps and may have slightly changes in kernel.

Yes but you can always tick exclude kernel when u flashing newer ftf with flashtool which will ensure your favourite custom kernel untouched and CWM will be there for sure.

There is no meaning of update if you unticked kernel , because update also brings the improvements to kernel and there is not much possibility that it will boot with older kernel

We can hope for it , but multitouch issue has been raised since the 4.1.2 .If Sony could fix that then Sony might have fixed that in earlier updates.
 this is according to me though ,rest of thing depends on sony

But custom kernels always better than stock in performance and battery life. So, people prefer custom kernel with some added governors, i/o schedulers, custom recovery and optimum undervoltage.
Of course this not gonna be 4.3 update. So, this update only will have slight changes in kernel and well upgraded kernel only be implemented if and only if there is 4.3 update released for our device and current 4.2.2 stock ROM will boot for sure...

Joel16, Obviously Flashing ftf will cost CWMl. But if thunderzap 3.0 or phatom latest kernel are compatible with this new firmware we can use flash tool to avoid flashing kernel while flashing other files. or we can flash kernels later (if compatible) to gain our CWM.
According to my sources, the update will roll out sometime between 13-15 December..

developer is on a hiatus I think. Try other roms first. wait till the thread gets active again before flashing.
There's nothing to update. It's stock rom with a few extras. Hence no activity

See, this is where I'm a little fuzzy. Stock Google is simpy AOSP + Google's closed source apps - dialer, camera, play services, etc. What then is the difference between a ROM such as cataclysm which adds customization to the AOSP / Stock ROM and another AOSP-based ROM which adds customization, but requires you to flash Gapps in a separate package?
Is it simply that the other "non-stock AOSP-based" ROMs modify the open-sourced files within the ROM, and Cataclysm does not? But, then again, I can't imagine that the open-sourced files in Cataclysm were NOT modified in order to achieve its vast customization possibilities.

The moderator had to close the thread because of all the shenanigans going on. When Google updates, he will update the ROM, we hope, nobody has seen him but personally, after reading some of the post by people I would tell them all to go pound sand.
anyway thanks for your reply guys
i am on stock rom+xposed framework+trinity kernel..have all what a custom rom offers..but missing cataclysm inbult IncallBlocker

So use it. I am as are many others still. It's no different than stock rom update wise. You haven't had one. Nor have we

You don't flash gapps on cataclysm. Read the OP. It's stock based and updates when we get Google updates. If anything when the previous updates came out, he was the fastest to update the rom out of the roms at that time.

Actually, the thread was closed because many users couldn't keep patience as a virtue. The thread turned into a loop of questions asking "Where is atl4ntis, Will this Rom ever be updated?". Mod said It would open upon Developer's request.

Developers are not required to be active in their threads. People kept trolling and requesting his presence even though his rom was setup just like he said it would be. He updated the Nexus 4 cataclysm when kitkat came out and he did the same disappearance because of stupid users. He has met every update Google has put out so far so going from actual facts he has been updating 100% of the time and has yet to fail. When Google updates and he does not then you can assume he abandoned it. Until then he has developed his stock based rom accordingly to Google updates.

And people from Nexus 4 or whatever it was he did Cataclysm for before have already said he always dissappears but re appears to update when needed

I have slim kat and trinity kernel on my Nexus 5 on 4.4.2
If i flash 4.4.3 on to my nexus 5, will it erase my phone to factory settings?
What is the best way to flash this update on to my phone.
thanks
Why not just flash the weekly (possibly unstable) Slimkat 4.4.3 build or wait for the stable release?
Edit: Read the stickies, this section is NOT for help questions.

Upgrading to a new Android version requires a clean install (it's recommended at least) so backup your data first.

It's recommended, definitely
That said, most of us SlimKat users have successfully dirty flashed with no bugs or ill effects
Hi guys,
With i.e. Franco kernel installed, will I be able to have official updates on stock ROM?
Sent from my One V using xda app-developers app
No.
To further elaborate, any changes to /system will render updates useless. A custom kernel, having root, etc. You can however flash a stock ROM over your current install and it'll essentially have the same effect as updating.
So what would you suggest - in case of me going to root it and use custom kernel and dalvik, should I go fully custom or at least stick to atock rom and eventualy update it with fastboot?

I recommend fully customized. You'll have complete control over your device, be able to do things like multi boot ROMs through MultiROM, use the latest GPU drivers and the custom dalvik patches and kernels you are referring to.
It depends what you wanted. There are pretty rooted stock ROMs as flashable zips. This would be a Mich better (and easier) method than official OTA updates
Buy also, try custom ROMs too. There's a lot of variation out there.
