Nexus 5 rebooting all the time - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just got my white 32gb Nexus 5 today and it reboots every 2-3 minutes. I've tried factory resetting, tried not installing any apps, tried flashing stock rom, nothing works! While the phone is plugged in it doesn't reboot, but as soon as I remove the usb cable the rebooting returns.
Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I live in Brazil and bought the phone on the US so it will be very difficult to get a replacement from Google.
I'm depressed, first my N4 was stolen, now this

he already did that.
OP, you said you tried installing stock rom, was that a zip from recovery or was it the factory img via fastboot?

That can also mean he did it through the phone but not through recovery

Factory image.
Btw, the rebooting is happening since I first started the phone, without root or unlock. I only unlocked after the problem, so I could flash the factory image.

reset to stock.
rma.

Made a video showing only the stock apps and the rebooting: http://youtu.be/TDzBoII6qaQ

The cpu cache has been bad on some units causing kernel panic and rebooting. You have it, RMA is your option. Sorry about that

Meh, that sucks
Does anyone know how google handle RMAs from people outside the US? The Nexus 5 is not avaiable in Brazil yet :/

Actually mine did the same thing. Sideload 4.4.1 update and it will fix it. Mine stopped doing what yours is doing as soon as I updated.

Updated it, it worked for like an hour but then the rebooting began

Make sure you did a factory reset and wiped it completely. If the boot loader was unlocked, lock it. I had 110% the exact same symptoms as you. You may wanna do the Google method of reflashing 4.4 then sideload 4.4.1 all on a clean wipe.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

Try setting your lock screen to none. When I had a pin set it rebooted.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

Wiped it in stock recovery, flashed factory image, sideloaded 4.4.1 update, locked bootloader and now the phone randomly shuts down instead of rebooting, lol. To turn it on again I have to press power for 10 seconds, which is really weird.
I never used a PIN lockscreen, it was always "slide". I will try setting it to "none" and see if it helps.
Thanks for the help ssconceptz

Still shutting off

Yea I think I jinxed myself coming in here now mines doing it. The bad part is Google won't touch your device if it didn't come from the play store and LG won't touch your device because Google told them not to. If you didn't officially buy it your somewhat SOL.

That happens to me to its not that it shuts down, its on but the screen doesn't turn on when you press the button so you hold the power then the device reboots. Happens to me.

Hey try rooting and using Clockworkmod not TWRP and flash CM11 and 4.4 gapps. No reboots since.

That was the problem with the old G2x. Turned out to be faulty batteries. You might want to try pulling the back of and check your battery connection. It could just be loose.

Battery died, boots into recovery?????

My phone died and i didnt realize it was low and now im not sure why it wont charge. Anytime i put it on the charge it reboots into recovery and keeps doing that. I tried holding down the vol down several times to get into bootloader but it wouldnt go nor will it boot back on
Recovery
I was having a similar issue with the phone booting into recovery while charging. I flashed the latest TWRP recovery and it solved that issue. However, I have not encountered the issue with the device not being able to power up. I hate to recommend a full wipe if you don't have a back-up, but you can try the recovery first.
Hard power-off offers a workaround

I am experiencing this as well. Battery runs out of charge and when I plug it into the power outlet, the phone boots into recovery. Selecting "reboot" in recovery doesn't work and the phone boot loops back into recovery. Some have suggested that using the "clear storage" option in recovery seems to stop the boot loops but I don't really want to clear my data every time the battery runs out. What works for me is to let the phone stay plugged in for about fifteen minutes (so it gets a little charged). I then press and hold the power button for about ten seconds. This causes the phone to power off completely. I then press and hold the power button to power up the phone (cold start). The phone boots up correctly although I get a message something like "the device encountered an error on startup, would you like to report the issue to HTC?" I choose NO.
This is very annoying and I can't seem to find out if it is in the recovery or if it is in fact a problem in the stock ROM.

Its the crap recovery you using. Flash TWRP and you should never have that issue again.
I had that issue too. I had to leave the phone in recovery, charging, for a few minutes, then boot it without the charger.
It's a known issue with cwm though I thought it was fixed a while ago. Had that issue on my g2 but was fixed. I wish 4ext recovery was an option for this device

Anyone who is reading and is panicking, for future reference just hold down the power button to do a hard shutdown. Do this about 4-6 times until it successfully boots up. As a rule of thumb, I never install anything cwm anymore.

N5 keeps shutting down when rebooting

Phone is rooted with latest TWRP, Cataclysm rom, and Franco kernel. It started happening when I flashed r11 Franco kernel and when I reboot the phone, it shuts down instead. I couldn't start the phone holding down the power button and I held it for over 20 seconds. I thought I bricked my phone. After few minutes fussing with the buttons, it finally booted up. However, every time I reboot my phone, it'll do the same and I had to fuss around the buttons keeping them press down for several minutes before it'll boot up to system or boot loader. As far as I can see, it can boot to recovery & system with no issue. I'm wondering if I need to flash to stock and reflash it again. Anyone knows anything about this or had same issue, please help. Thanks.

Listen like the kernel is the problem. So flash another one (easy way) or go back to stock.
If it's working fine then, it was the kernel which made this happens.
Much success

This is what happens: it gets stuck in the rebooting process. It doesn't properly shut down, it just hangs with the screen turned off.
Try flashing the stock kernel. Does it do the same?

Flashed with stock kernel and it's still doing the same thing. I also restore back to stock 4.4 with stock kernel and it's still doing the same. Do I need to unroot and root again then flash rom, kernel, and etc? Don't really want to do that if I don't have to but guess I have no choice? Thanks again.
Yep, do a factory reset and see if it's working fine again... I'm thinking so.

Do you have a custom recovery installed? (Eg. TWRP or CM?)
- If not, are you rooted?
- If you do, have u made a Backup through your custom recovery?
- If you're not rooted, do you have warranty?
- If you don't have warranty, how long have you had you're phone for, because Google provide warranty for a certain amount of time with your phone.
Basically, if you have a custom recovery installed or are not rooted with warranty, don't panic.
In not an advanced user but I know done stuff... And there's always a way!

This is probably why it crashed. Your phone doesn't have a launcher to boot into. That's the reason it is boot looping. As mentioned earlier, you'll have to flash the factory image.

Yea, i feel the same. I forgot it was google launcher and its a nexus phone.
If it would have been some other trebuche launcher(like in samsung) , this problem would'nt have persisted.

That is the stock recovery. You can press both volume buttons at the same time, to show the recovery options.
Flashing the factory image is very easy. You put your phone in fastboot mode, plug it into your computer, and simple run the Flashall.bat (or .sh depending on your OS.)
Touchwiz Home in Samsung devices does not rely on google search. Our Nexus has a launcher that requires google search to run. Otherwise you can install AOSP launcher.

@vzuwOw if you run into this problem again just fastboot flash the system.img, not the flash-all.bat. it would have kept the rest of your settings and you wouldn't have to redo your while phone.

Google Nexus 5 stuck on boot screen

Hey guys,
my brother owns a Nexus 5 (duh, otherwise why would i be here )
but anyways, his phone is just stuck at the boot screen. As in as soon as you try powering it on, it shows the Google sign but then it just continually restarts after that. I've tried entering the bootloader but as soon as I access it, it just forcibly reboots without me pressing anything. I'm kind of stuck here as I can't really do anything.
Does anyone have any clue what to do?
Edit: forgot to say he's full stock as in no root, no unlocked bootloader, no recovery etc.
Hi,
Keep the turned off for a bit and then try accessing the bootloader.. From there, go to the recovery and perform a factory reset.
If you can't access the bootloader or it keeps restarting again and again in bootloader, it might be a eMMC failure..

Could the power button be stuck?

I have also considered this as well. Is there anyway to get around this? Or perhaps fix this even?
Perhaps its also worth to note that it will only do this when its connected to a charger but when disconnected, it wont even turn on (as in no google sign or bootloader)

If it's stock, what happened to cause the situation?

Same here - phone was in my bag overnight and off this morning (battery full).
When I started it up it went into boot loop.
Stock ROM, no modifications whatsoever, 2 weeks old phone.
Anybody else?

Yes. Motherboard needs to be replaced in the case of a dead eMMC.

Phones are not meant to be kept in the bag.. May be the bag hit somewhere and the phone took a brunt of it? Who knows??
Or it could also be a random failure..
Can you access the recovery? If so, try a factory reset from there and see whether it boots up?

Bootloop after flashing TWRP

I wanted to install a custom Rom on my Nexus 5 running Android 6.0 so I downloaded TWRP latest and unlocked the Bootloader and installed TWRP.
Now the OS doesn't boot up anymore and the TWRP starts but gets rebooted all the time, and TWRP does not seem to be able to mount anything. When it reboots it looks like it automatically goes to the TWRP where it says it is running OpenRecoveryScript but it is unable to mount anything. I tried a boot start to Recovery and it worked but when I tried a factory reset it says the same thing.
I'm worried my phone will die and have further issues, I need help as soon as possible.

I get a message that says "Factory Reset Complete... Failed".
Is there a solution to this?

What factory reset? You should wipe everything except internal storage

Was the reset done from recovery mode or when the ROM had been booted to the desktop?

In fastboot mode, try this: fastboot erase userdata, fastboot erase cache, and reboot the phone.
No way, my hammerhead only reboots 4ever

1 Year later I face the same trouble : My Nexus 5 Hammerhead looks like bricked after twrp 3.0.2 flash
No way to stop the infinite boot loop, quickly the recovery mode, fast boot and Google logo flash before my eyes without giving me any chance to reflash or do absolute nothing !
buaaaahhh ahhhhh .... And I renewed 2 weeks ago with a brand new battery and flex cable buaaaaaa
Could the rebooting be due to a bad power button?

It could be, indeed that was my first thought as time ago it used to happen. But I've been trying as a maniac the not less maniac solution of hitting it softly and spasmodically as it turns on, but no success. Such solution it used to work, now it does not.
Currently, desperation makes me think of desperate (probably fool) solutions like unplug the battery to see if that so called "cache" wipes My lovely hammerhead currently open .....but does not look better

Ok, it looks like a f******* and annoying incredible coincidence, right after the flash, the power button arises !! BUT my last test looks like that's the problem :: While rebooting forever, I just keep the VolumeDOWN button pressed and it tries to enter the fast boot menu, as it the power certainly already pressed.
Now that I have the hammerhead open, I'll google to seek how to consistently fix that annoying problem.

Hammerhead sticky power button SOLVED
Thanks a lot for your answer. I managed my self thru it yesterday, using mainly these 2 YouTube videos
Xu6BWU0bwIQ
doPuXkQTGbc
(Sorry for the partial link; not allowed to post external urls)
Which basically explain about opening the Nexus 5 Hammerhead, get right to the damn sticky power button, clean it right and manipulate it a little bit with a lady tweezers in order to "unstick" it.
I've already mange thru these nearly 3 years to keep my great hammerhead alive ! Replacing its flex cable, battery, now manipulating the sticky button ....I do not know how much life is left for it but GOD SAVE THE HAMMERHEAD !
Thanks to you all
