My Nexus 5 has been running noticeably hot on idle after the 4.4.1 update. Is this something I should be concerned about? Has this been replicated in any other case? A little worried about this.
hot... what is your cpu temp? hot does not mean anything, its a relative term. if you give us a cpu temp, tben we can say if its hot or not. i say this because many complain about "overheating", then give us a cpu temp of around 37-38C. the funny thing is 37C is the average human body temp, so yhat is in no way overheated.
It peaked at around 45. Which I also read somewhere was the temp at which the CPU would start throttling. Which would've been alright, had there been any load. But it's getting there on idle. Would wiping cache do any good?

45C is well within normal, and not even considered hot. hot would be 65C and higher(if not watching videos or playing intense games). the safety shut down temp is 100C, which the phone will automatically shut off on its own.

I find that frequently my Q runs hot. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it happens, but often it's hot enough that it's a bit uncomfortable in my pocket. Anyone else?

Before I turned off LTE the phone got extremely hot, since then it's only occasionally reached uncomfortable levels (~104F battery temp according to my widget) and each of those times was when I was in a marginal signal area without WiFi data. Bluetooth with WiFi looking for a signal also seems to get it a little hot (maybe 102F), but nothing like the Evo Shift which would hit 108F under the same configuration!
I have mine temps set to C but the other day it got up to like 64 degrees. Not sure what that is in degrees F but I know its dangerously high.
What temp are you monitoring? To me 64C could only be cpu core, which would indeed be high but not dangerous to the chip (my desktop core routinely hits 90C as does my GPU when stressed, I run a minimal fan speed passively cooled rig for noise reasons). Most components can hit 110C internal temp without damage. However batteries don't like getting above 40C much at all, nor does human flesh.

Supposedly that's battery temp. At least according to SetCPU. I figure its off somewhat cuz it reports my processor upwards of 300 C and I know that's not right. But I have a case on my phone and when its reading high battery temps the back of my phone is hot (not just warm)
I Keep wifi off, and when in poor service areas my phone gets hot. If I put it in forceroam, then she is fine.
My wifi is rarely on. Occasionally my temps get a little warm but not too bad. Any time I use wifi tether it climbs though.
Edit: After re-reading arggghhh's kernel thread i realized the kernel i was using has the gpu overclock attempt. Flashed back to version .04 and its still getting a little warm but nothing ridiculous. Haven't used wifi tether yet so i cant report on those temps.

Looks like the performance is so so, the phone heats up too quickly and CPU performance goes down,
If I do Antutu when its warm I get less than 20K in it
If I let it rest for some time and then do it I get a score of 25+
Looks like the device has heat issues

Two-part solution: Stop running benchmark tests and flash Franco kernel.
And, search before you post. Lots of threads on performance benchmarks
I see so many people who care what a benchmark score is.

its not a heat issue. it will get hot with use, especially with antutu benchmark, its a 2.3ghz quad core phone without an active cooling system, what do you expect? anyways, the reason performance goes down when hot is because of heat throttling. your phone does this when going over a certain temp. it drops the cpu speed and number of cores used until it cools down. there are ways around this. you can root your phone and flash a kernel that lets you disable thermal throttle. then all your left with is the safety reboot temp of 100C. when reaching this temp, the phone will automatically shut down. or you can put your phone into a freezer until the cpu temp is below 10C, then run the benchmark.

I was just playing gta san andreas (best game) and the phone was getting really warm to the touch. The back part of the phone where my fingers are resting getting seriously warm (nearly hot) and i was getting worried so i closed the game. I checked the temp of the battery and it was 43 degrees celcius. (109.4 fahrenheit). Is this ok?
note: the phone is naked (no case + screen protector).

you do realize that the average human body temp is 37C, a little under your cpu temp? its quite normal for the phone to get even warmer than yours when playing games, especially gpu intensive games. the phones safety shutdown temp is 100C, so youve got some ways to go.

its a quad core phone, so when all four cores are active, and the gpu is being pushed, heat is expected. if your not rooted with thermal throttle off, then at 70C(if i remember right) the phone will automatically throttle because of the temp. itll reduce cpu speed to cool off the phone. if you do have root, disabling thermel throttle is always an option. then it wont reduce cpu speed. but if tou do hit the safety shutdown temp of 100C, the phone will shut diwn automatically. this is very rare. really, you need to try to get to 100C to reach it, otherwise its very rare.
Is 46 degrees dangerous? My phone goes to around 43-46 degrees while playing asphalt 8.

It isn't dangerous, no.
It isn't ideal as lithium batteries hate the warm. Think of lithium batteries being perishable foods, they prefer the cold, in fact for long term storage they are kept in refrigerators.
If the phone was at these temperatures 24/7 then the battery would quickly deteriorate and run-times would take a dive, but for a few hours a day it is unlikely to make much difference considering most people replace these phones after a couple of years anyway.

How to disable throttling on Nexus 5? Seems this phone throttles more than other due to LG settings.

hey is there any way to turn off the thermal throttling without changing the kernel?....I m on stock kernel but the phone is rooted
Hello. My Nexus 5 has been getting really hot while watching movies. I am using a SlimPort to display video to my TV. I am also charging my phone through the Slimport as well. In the past, my phone would get warm, but never so hot that my phone powers down. I have been using the same SlimKat Rom, so nothing has changed as far as that. Would changing any of the CPU settings help in any way? Thanks.

first off, by hot you mean what temp? CPU and/or battery temp.
now, while you are watching movies, its normal for it to warm up quite a bit. if you add to that being plugged in charging, it can get down right hot. but there are 2 safeties features in place so that you dont worry. first is the thermal throttle, which will reduce your CPU speed to cool down your device. if that doesn't stop the warming up, you have the battery temp safety shutdown and the CPU temp safety shutdown. battery temp shutdown is when your battery reaches 60C, and CPU temp shutdown is when your CPU reaches 105C. but really, just realize that when you are charging, and using your phone, it can get really hot, and that's normal.
It may just be warmer weather which has your phone running warmer then before. Does SlimKat alter thermal throttling limits?
Hi guys I'm wondering what's your normal temperature values.
I've received my OP7 pro today and I started right way installing apps, restoring 4 GB of WhatsApp data, and I've found that my device was some how kind of hot.
I've decided to install AnTuTu benchmark app, and when I've started the Stress test, I've noticed temperature peaks of 80°C.
Should I be worried? Have anyone of you guys tried?
I noticed mine also got kinda hot when was wrap charging...but 10 lays of liquid cooling is 10 layers
Well, mine on charging I didn't notice any thing odd.
It as only when pushing a bit for him. And I was mesmerized with the 80 °C in the stress test. I know is supposed for that test to burn the phone, but I never thought that would reach so higher values
I believe that my only fear is that the thermal system might be wrongly attached and I don't know.
Thus me trying to understand what is the normal temperature people are having
Normal temp is 90. When you wrap charge from like 5 percent to 60ish it goes up to 108 then cools down

Well, you are speaking about the Battery temperature while charging.
I'm worried about the other temperatures, like CPU. Like I said, if I try to run a stress test with Antutu, the temperatures on cpu have spikes to 90°C almost.
Even though I know that's normal to have spikes like these ones, I can't stop being a bit worried about the thermal resistance of the phone itself.
I totally understand that in normal use temperatures won't go so high than on a stress test, but it's for understanding how well is the phone prepared to sustain higher temperatures during large time intervals.
