Nexus 5 Got Wet - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So yesterday, while I was getting out of my car, I dropped my Nexus 5 into a puddle of water, about 1-3 inches deep. I immediately picked it up, dried it and all and it worked fine. One problem though was that it was behaving as if I had a headset connected to it and I couldn't hear any sound from the speaker at the bottom. Eventually, I stuck a piece of thin tissue and cleaned out any excess water in there and booted it off and back on and it worked like a charm. Now my one problem is that the speaker sounds muffled. Is there a way that maybe I can fix this?

Stick in a bag of rice for two days, don't turn it on. You're lucky it isn't fried already

help water damage tilt

maybe.... I did a search and could not find what i was looking for...or found too much.
This is what happened, it rained, my windows were up. When i got in the car it dropped in the middle console were it was a little water. It was there for a second before I grabbed it and put it in my purse.
When I got home i dried it..removing the sim card and battery. the white thing is still white. It will keep popping up with stuff.
I read if you can get the battery to heat up that will help. is that true?
I work for att so i know i am screwed if there is water damage. i can't buy another one cause i purchase at none committment and the last one cost me 410.
I done retrofited my phone so i will be praying all night that it works.
HELP GIVE ME FACTS
if the white thing is still white and if you have warranty go for a replacement coz i think they only check the white thing. or go to a local phone repair shop and they will do it for a cheap price. i had my nokia repaired from water damage for 15 pounds about 6 years ago.
Tips:
1....Dry it with a towel.
2....Take off the battery.
3....Never put the battery back and turn it on, if you are not sure the unit is totally dry.
4....You can wrap it in tissue (both battery and unit) and put it in a sealed plastic bag of rice grains. Why? Because rice grains are natural desicants. It will absorb all the excess moisture you can't dry with the towel. Leave it there for a minimum of 4 days.
5....You can only place the battery back and turn it on if you are really sure the unit and battery are totally dry.
update
every is working fine. I slept with it to under my pillow. I also check my sim card and that was wet. after I dryed that, i put my sim card in my standby phone.
Everything is working good now!
just a general instuction
1.get the battery out (because watter can't harm it if there is no electricity)
2a.dry it with a towel, just to get rid of any water that could float out of it
2b.dry it with a hairdryer or a radiator. (don't expose to fire)
3.instead of ryce you can use ethanol ( C2H5OH ) to get the water out and to clean it...use a brush to do it
4.try not to drop it again
personaly i dismantle the device when drying it...that way i'm sure there is no water left in it
but for inexperienced people or those devices with warranty...i suggest you don't dismantle it
I took the battery out and placed both battery and phone into instant rice. Works great
working fine
my phone is working fine.
It had some problems, it was the keyboard, kept acting up. so open it and let the keyboard dry (i don't use the keyboard...lol) took out the sim card and dried the area where it was, a little bit of water was on it. Dried it, and put it under my pillow for heat..lol.
Took it to work the next morning and it was having trouble with alignment when i used the stylus. so after redoing the alignment it has been working fine.
Thanks for the help.

Dropped mine in the toilet!
The unthinkable happened. I have insurance on my tilt... but the thought of a whole day re-flashing and installing software made my stomach hurt.
I did the following-
1. Took out the battery within 10 seconds
2. Took out sim card & the microsd
3. Shook out all the water I could
4. Used a whole can of compressed air to blow any moisture out
5. Placed in a bag with silica gel packets for 30 hours
I was amazed when the thing booted right up! EVERYTHING works perfectly- wifi, GPS, camera, speaker, mic, buttons, and touchscreen! This thing is a tank!

Watery Grave .... Recovery?

So my Nexus S took a swim while canoeing. The phone wasn't canoeing, I was. I threw it in a bag of rice and it works beautifully save one thing. My external speaker and headphone jack are very, very garbled. The ear speaker works great while on the phone, but every ring, sound, keypress, or music is just rough noise. Any ideas on how to replace and/or fix this?
sounds more like it still has mist/moist trapped in the speaker area
let it dry under indirect sunlight to evaporate the remaining water
the best thing to do is if you are technical enough, is to open the phone up, and use compressed air to flush out the remaining moist
I would think that to be the case, but why do I get the same sounds out of the headphone jack?

same circuit
when you plug in the 3.5 the back speaker turns off and vice versa
so that circuit is still moist (to my best guess 99%)
i always put any wet stuff i want to dry quickly on top/behind my PC
because the i7 minimum temp is always in the 50c range
so it's always pumping out heat, it's the perfect spot to dry anything
just leave it there for a few hours, or over night and next day is all dry
i also use it to re-melt those pens that got the ink dried up stuck
I am going to give it a try. Also, good advice on dried ink!
Beware of corrosion. you might need to take it apart and clean off the corrosion on the connectors. this is coming from personal experience. Open it up if u know how and check out the circuits

Honestly it sounds like you did not leave it in rice long enough, best thing you can do is put it back in a bowl of rice with the back cover off and leave it there for another 3-5 days at least.
You will probably find if you continue to use it now that in a few days it will stop working due to corrosion. It may already be to late..

Replace it
So here is the plan. I am going to open that puppy up and used compressed air to get any unseen H2O molecules out, then a bag or rice for a few more days. It has spent a total of 30 hours or so in rice so far. I'll report back with result.
Good advice. You really should not have tried using it, rather immediately pull the battery and immediately open every part you can reach and blow out with air.
No Luck
After 2 more days in a bag of rice and some compressed air. I am still getting the garbled speaker sound. I may try to replace it, anyone know of a quick guide to do that? I have zero experience working on circuit boards, that is to say, unless there is a cable with a plug in type connector, I am lost.
Is this the piece I need to repair the whole audio setup? I pulled apart the phone and think I might be able to swap out this piece.

[Q] moto g fell in water

my moto g fell in water. it is not working. will it come under warranty . if not how much it costs for repair..........................................
I believe that all manufacturers state in their standard warranty that water damage is not covered. If you take the rear cover off and take a look towards the bottom, you'll see there's a small red mark that indicates water damage. If this is present, you're out of luck with regards to an in-warranty repair.
My suggestion would be to store the phone in a container with dried, brown rice, for two days. Perhaps place the container on top of a radiator or similar heat source, to speed up the evaporation process. You don't want to induce too much heat to further damage the device.
Also possible is a bag of silica gel crystals that you usually get in pairs of shoes - place this in an airtight container with the phone and they'll soak up some moisture.
My girlfriend recently dropped the Moto G in water and within two days it was fully repaired, now works perfectly. Don't give up on it yet!
Got similar problem, my daughter drop her Motorola into bath. Left to dry for more than day next to boiler. Now not turning on, when plug charger LED flash white and goes off. After few seconds again and again just flashes and no more.
Thinking that battery gone as manage to turn on phone after incident and spotted that battery was on 0%.

plug it into the charger and hold the power button for 2-3minutes. then leave it charging for an hour and than try to turn it on.
Put it in a bowl of uncooked rice and cover it, leave it there for 2 days. It's serious, check YouTube if you don't believe it. It works, it dries the water out!

This is the easiest way
Just get some dried rice and put your moto g/any phone dropped in water in a container and close it.Let it in there for overnight and tupp your pgone is alright
Moto Go falls into closet.
This happened yesterday noon. It was submerged for around 6-8 secs b4 I pulled it out. It looked like it was working fine. Nevertheless I took off the cover and tried drying it with a towel before I switched it off. (Total time till here 30-40 secs). Being quite an impatient guy, I turned it on after a few mins. (Let's say under 10 mins so far). It turned on with no problem. As calls were to be made, I dialed a number. As I heard the ringing on the other side, I assumed all was fine. But tht was not yet to be. Notice me saying yet?! Yes, this one has a happy ending.
Moving on. The person on the other end of the line could not hear me other than in short bursts, like having a 1 sec break/pause in between conversations. I tried calls with the speaker phone switched on. But it kept turning off and on again between the ringing. I switched it off and took out the sim. I did not do that the first time (Very foolish of me). It was clearly damp. I went on to dry it with a towel. I turned the phone bck on. Calls were made but the same issues persisted. I tried playing some music but it would stop right after it started. This was where I started to get a bit worried. I took off the cover and vigorously swung/waved the phone about trying to force out any excess water. The effort was not futile. The song continued playing. I immediately make a call but the break was still very much there. This went on till late evening.
Before the day was over, everything was working fine. There were lags but tht was there when I bought the phone (28/05/14). I used a 4S before this, so forgive if I seem a bit harsh. Tht too was dropped in a river, drenched with curd milk and submerged in beer. It still worked fine till a guy snatched it from me.
Cheers!
PS: I did not have access to a blower/dryer or any rice but that is the way it should be done. I'm just posting here so those who don't have tht around might get a confidence boost. Hope this helps.
Adam Outler had a pretty good video about this. It basically said to remove power ASAP (i.e. open up the phone and disconnect the battery) and submerge everything in high purity ethyl or isopropyl alcohol to displace the water and dry it out much faster.
Moto g Accedentally dropped in water
Hi,
I own a moto g which accedentally dropped in water. i took it off and it was working fine for few min. After some time i noticed some water inside my screen and my touch was not working. I left my phone for some time. After an hour when i restarted my phone my touch was working. To dry down the water, i kept my phone under shady sun light for about 2 hours. Now when i try to switch it on the led light is blinking 3 times as if it do when the battery drains. I tried to charge my phone and now the LED light is blinking and later it stopped.
If my circuits are crashed will the LED light blink. Because i used my phone before if completely dried off.
Hi , I dropped my moto g2 in to water tub ...It took a few seconds before I took it out ... Then i dried it for about an hour in sun light and kept it switched off for about almost a day .... Now it works fine but some time it gives sound like water in a hot pan..... Any suggestion would b much appreciated... Thanks in advancr

Z3 in water and the phone thinks headphones have been plugged in

So when my Z3 is submersed in water, it acts like I just plugged in headphones. I'm guessing something is wrong here?
The feature works but sensing a short across the terminals, what would happen when you connect headphones. Water is conductive causing a short across the terminals causing the phone to think headphones are connected.
Two things you can do;
Turn off the application that runs when you connect the headphones.
Turn on touch block when you go to use the phone in water, then you can only use the normal camera buttons.
I have just purchased a phone protector that comes with a plug for the headphones jack, a feature I really like because my previous phone ended up with a fair bit of corrosion in there even though they were not used in water a lot.
Thats why you have the touch block option
Well, I got the phone replaced at a Tmo store this past Saturday. The replacement phone lasted two days, and it just fell about 1.5 inches and shattered the front screen (I placed the phone face down on top of a folded washcloth on the counter -- phone slid off the washcloth and landed on counter shattering).
Sure, this could have been avoided, but I have never had a phone shatter like this on me and this is quite disappointing. Not sure if I should exchange for a new Z3, or find something different. Gah..

Touchscreen isn't working after being in a pool

Hi,
Earlier today I was in the pool, I grabbed my Z3 and started taking pictures. (of course I checked twice that all the flaps are closed).
After 10 minutes, I put the device on the table near the pool to dry.
I went out for watching the pictures but I was surprised to find out that the device doesn't recognize my touchs.
I already tried restarting the device using the power + volume up buttons, but I can't see any change.
Important to mention that all the buttons work well, the same goes for the speakers, the microphone, the light sensor, LED light etc.
Do you have any idea what should I do?
Thanks and sorry about my grammer mistakes.
I got quite the panic attack the first time I experienced the same thing. For me waiting a while worked, and it came back to life. I still have trouble a couple of hours after soaking it when it comes to sound, though. Sometimes it thinks that I have a jack connected, for instance. I'm guessing you just have to wait for it to dry properly.

same as me! It also thought I connected my headset, for some reason.
when you waited a while, the device was turned-off or on?
I never turned it off. Might be a good idea to try to connect a useless headsets jack (I take no responsibility for whatever might happen though. I have no good concept of whether this might be a bad idea or not) to try to clean it.

I have connected a headset already and it worked fine. I will let the phone to dry until tomorrow.
Very strange. I get my phone wet a lot and never had any issue. Of course touch does not work well when phone and hands are wet. But after a couple of minutes, it is good to go.
If your phone stops working properly after being immersed in water then it is defective and water got inside of it. Bring it to a service center, they will test it and if they find a leak with flaps closed they will replace under warranty.
I've immersed mine in water a few times and I never had any problem (not pool, mostly in the sink for cleaning purposes and to test the waterproofing). If water goes and stays into the headphone jack the phone will detect headphones, but you just have to blow the water out of it or shake it a bit to get the water out. Underwater the screen will not work and it will detect fake touches if a lot of water is still on the screen, but it should work perfectly as soon as you dry it with a towel or something.
If you experience a malfunction after drying up your phone with a towel and getting residual water out of the jack then water got inside and you should get it replaced ASAP. It doesn't need any drying period, drying it with a towel is enough.
