[Q] Internal sdcard: Recovery Wipe vs. in-ROM Erase - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I wiped everything on my wife's phone in recovery, including internal sdcard, and flashed BeanStalk from external sdcard. It experienced a lot of sudden reboots in seemingly any situation--updating apps, recording video, answering a call, or even just waking. I wiped and flashed again later with the same results. I didn't have time to learn how to log with ADB, so I just went with a different ROM (Dirty Unicorns) to try to get her a stable phone ASAP and it's been completely stable. The only thing I did differently was, instead of wiping the sdcard in Recovery before flash, I erased it with BeanStalk before going into recovery.
I'm wondering if it's possible the internal sdcard partition wasn't set up right the first time since I just did a wipe?
Now that, I think about it, I didn't check the BS's md5 once it was on the card since the phone's USB connection is limited to MTP. Later with DU, I had the idea to put the card in a USB card reader and check md5 that way. So there's a chance the BS zip might have been broken.

[Q] tablet erases any new file on reboot??

Hey everyone,
So I got my tablet today and have been working on it for the past 8 hours!! I finally got CWmod on it and running. Had a nightmare of a time getting it to work correctly and after using NVFLASH to nuke the whole tablet and install the stock ROM, then updating i was able to get CWmod to run. Now I'm having a really odd issue.
I can boot into CWmod. I repartitioned the SD card, mounted it. I can see the device in windows but when I add ANYTHING to the internal SD card it is completely gone once I reboot the device. I'm trying to get a ROM on it but it's like the drive is locked or something really weird. It copys onto the tablet just fine. the second I reboot everything is deleted.
I feel like I'm missing something here. I had that issue with it when I ran the stock ROM. I could change something and it would not stick after a reboot. For example registering my device on kindle and then downloading books. as soon as I reboot the machine it's as if i never registered it. I'm really at a loss as to what to do with this. I can't seem to get it to save anything on the internal storage.
Well after fiddling with it for a while longer I'm about to give up. I used NVFLASH to get it to the stock ROM again. updated to 3588 and yet again, I can't get any changes to stick. I can change anything and everything on it while it's powered on. The second I power it off and reboot it nukes everything I did (and takes close to 5-6 minutes to boot). I even mounted it and deleted every single file on the internal storage. They all came back upon reboot. I reformatted the entire SDCARD, I reformatted all the user data, did a cache wipe.. nothing works. I'm wondering if my unit is defective? at this point I would love to just have a tablet that I can actually use. I can't understand how it's even possible to not be able to make any changes on the device unless it's reinstalling the ROM everytime I reboot?
What version of CWM are you using and how did you install it?
I was running CWM 8. I couldn't install it via the internal storage. It would boot into recovery mode and "install" but once the machine rebooted it would not boot into CWM. I tried it several times same deal. I could install it but once it rebooted, nothing :/..
So I had to use the micro SD card to install it. I edited the recovery command file and pointed it to the SDCARD2. It installed finally, and stuck!
I tried using the microSD card to install the other ROMs. But unfortunately it will not mount in CWM.
I'm trying to get CWM back on it after doing yet another wipe with NVFLASH. We'll see if I can get it to work..
So i'm basically sitting here with a brick.. unless I never power it off lol!
Ok well another odd thing is going on with this. I'm up and running with CWM 08 again. I can turn on USB mass storage mount. The tablet shows up in windows and on my linux box. I can make whatever changes I want, adding files, deleting everything on it. Nothing matters cause once I unmount and remount the device it's all back to normal. It seems like nothing is allowed to write to the internal storage even though it thinks it does write to it??

[Resolved] Issues updating CM10.0 to 10.1 (T-Mobile GS3)

So I have had CM10 on my phone for probably 8 months now (almost since I got the phone) and have had no issues with the ROM whatsoever.
I got a notification about an updated version of CM10 today and went ahead and downloaded and installed it, but when I finished the update, I had no personal data left on the phone, could not set up accounts to recover the data, could not (and still can't) recover backups through ROM Manager, and cannot recover backups through CWM. I get an error message which I can't remember at the moment and leads to a bricked phone upon reboot until I do a fresh install of CM10.0.
I read after I started having the issues that I wasn't supposed to directly upgrade from the CM Updater with an S3, but it was already too late. Supposedly the issue is something along the lines of an emulated version of my phone's internal storage? If that makes sense. So whenever it's pulling a piece of information it's looking in the spot it should be in, but on a non-physically-existent SD card, essentially. That's what I gathered anyways.
I have a 32gb external SD Card that is also in use with my S3. I have tried moving my ROM Backups to there and recovering from the External SD Card, but the same error message occurred, although ROM Manager was at least able to find the backups after they were moved (I also had to change the setting and request that it prefer to look through an external SD Card).
So I have a usable ROM as far as the software itself, but I no longer can use any accounts or information that is stored with them or any of the same widgets (not a game-breaker) as I was able to previously. Is there a way to fix this? I've never just been completely stuck before >.<

Just to be clear, you're saying to try and flash CM10.0 and then do not update when prompted from the notification? The other part was clear enough lol.
Edit: Tried the above and did not fix the problem, but I didn't use fastboot specifically because I have a Samsung phone.
The error I'm getting is "unable to mount /system" when I try and restore a backup.
Bump. Still haven't figured this out.
Problem solved.
Re-flashed CM10.1; doing full data, cache, and dalvik wipes before and after the flash; and the problem was corrected.

[Q] Complete Phone Redo???

I have been flashing and playing different roms for awhile now but I have noticed that my phone is running out of space so quickly these days. The internal sd card is full and my external sd card has a little space but that's it, and the phone won't do updates or new downloads due to the internal card being full.
I was wondering, I want to go back to using CM10 again on this Blaze with the latest gapps, but I want to wipe EVERYTHING and start fresh, I have backed things using wondershares mobilego (as well as a manual backup of both sd cards, internal and external).
Can someone give me a good medthod on wiping it all, system, cache, dalvik, internal sd card and external sd card and doing a fresh install of cm10 and gapps.
Thanks in advance
Download the latest cm10 nightly and 4.1.2 gapps from the official cm10 thread to your external SD card.
Boot to cwm and go to mounts, and format:
System
Data
Cache
Emmc
Do all of them several times.
Go to advanced and wipe davlik cache a couple times too.
Then install the cm10 zip followed by the gapps. Wipe cache and davlik one more time. You can format the external SD card any time later, after you verify boot (suggested). You can use a PC or the built in format under settings/storage.

Wouldn't I also need to do format /sdcard several times as well to format the internal sd and then after I am all done I can do the format /sd-ext to format the external sd card? Which if I format the sd-ext it won't hurt anything I did for the install of CM and gapps right?
By the way, thanks for your help I appreciate it
You can format the external a couple times. Sometimes things get left behind, that's why in suggested the multiple wipes. You don't have to worry about SD ext, the partition will get wiped when the external SD card is formated. If you didn't create the partition there's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't format the emmc (internal SD card) after installing a rom as some of it is used.

Thanks again, I did as stated above then booted up, made sure all worked fine then went back into cwm and formatted the sd card (not the sd-ext). I am now putting some music and photos back on the sd card so I have them with me. Latest CM10 Nightly from the 4th seems to freeze a little bit when trying to do things on my Blaze, maybe I just need to reboot it again after I move the stuff over.
Thanks again!
Give it a a little while to settle. If it is still giving you issues try the previous nightly from 7/28.

Part of the internal storage is cached at /cache. It caches a bunch of things, such as mount points and app usage. When you wipe cache and start over, expect things to be slower for a couple days/reboots. Then it'll settle, as was said above
Good tips Romman0. I try to do this every 4 months or so. Blackhole and FSC only make it better, but that's clearing leftovers and realigning empty blocks and messing with the filesystem and a lot of technical junk

CM13 with micro SD card GT-P311x

Hello,
I have managed to take my tablet from KitKat to Lollipop and then Marshmallow using cm-13.0-20160802. Everything was working fine up to a point when I was in Japan and then I started experiencing problems with Wi-Fi connections. Following the boot, I was getting a message stating that "Process system isn't responding...". Restarting the tablet was some sort of a solution to be able to use Wi-Fi.
Back to home, I was determined to obtain the most recent version of cm-13.0 hoping to solve the issue but I was not simple. First, let me say that I have a micro SD of 32 Gig, which was integrated as internal memory. My recovery program was TWRP 3.0.0-0. I have tried to follow the steps as explained on Android-Andi FAQ page. I might have made an error somewhere but anyhow, the end result was an empty tablet. Everything was gone including backups saved on the external SD.
To fix this, I have restored my tablet to 4.2.2, rerouted it, went to Lollipop with cm-12.1 and finally to Marshmallow cm-13.0-20161007. Again, my external SD card is now integrated and viewed as internal memory using the feature that comes with cm-13. I have just found out that 2 other releases of cm-13 have been made available since. TWRP is now 3.0.2-7 and was used to back up Lollipop as well as EFS.
I would like to proceed with the update but I would prefer to take an easy way, not the long one as I was forced to. Here is my question: considering that my external SD is viewed as being internal storage, what should I do in order to update my current version of cm-13 to a more recent version?
Regards
You have two options
a.) Doing a dirty flash. Install the rom then wipe cache and dalvik. Then reboot
b.) Clean flash. Wipe /system, /data, dalvik, and cache then install the rom. Then wipe cache and dalvik again and reboot.
Wiping Data (Internal storage not /data) is usually not needed unless you want to encrypt the device.
Don't forget to use the latest recovery.
Cheers
Thanks Lightracer for your reply.
By the time I received your reply, I had figured out my problem. I can now update my rom with my external sd card has being viewed as internal storage without loosing everything.
For your information, I do use the latest recovery tool. By the way, I prefer the clean approach.
Thanks again for your involvement.

Micro SD Card no longer recognized issue ....

Ok, I have searched high and low to try and solve this issue without having to post it on the forums. There are several old threads about the Micro SD having issues here, and many many more across the net. At any rate let me start from the beginning.
So, I decided to root my stock tf300t and try the KatKiss 6.0 rom. Micro SD working excellent at this time. I also installed TWRP recovery image 3.0.2.0. Then for some simple reason ( read it somewhere) I dropped back to TWRP 2.5 and Micro SD still working excellent at this time. So, everything is great up to now.
I had found out that I had not formatted to f2fs and somehow with my big hand while doing so on the bootloader screen my pinky brushed the wipe data button. Yep, I lost it all and was stuck in the splash screen or TWRP 2.5 If I booted to recovery. My Micro SD and my TF300T's system files (all of them) showed 0mbs across the board. My file partitions were a mess to say the least. --- I posted about it in another thread.
Finally with the help of forum member gs-crash-24-7 I was able to flash the factory rom back to my TF300T and got my tablet back, with the exception of the fact my Micro SD no longer shows in my Tablet or on my pc when plugged in via the data cable. Now when placed in a card reader on the pc all my files were shown on the MicroSD< so I saved them elsewhere and using SDFormatter did a complete format and complete overwrite. (currently in fat32 mode - but have tried them all) Put a file on it and the pc reads it like a charm.
So, I went installed KatKiss 6.0 again in hopes the MicroSD would magically show up, also installed Kang TWRP 2.8.7.2, pico gapps, and supersu 2.52 to gain root access. But to no avail, I still have a Micro SD card that works great in my Galaxy S5, TF101, and my pc. I tried several different Micro Sd Cards as well, from a 128mb to 8gb one, which is the card I use in the Tf300T.
Ok, throughout my search of the net I found a similar issue that had been solved by adding a few lines of code to their phones permissions/platform.xml file. I have not tried this (honestly it was late and I forgot to bookmark where it was posted. lol Anyway, I did however go into my platform.xml file and did not find very much code in there at all and nothing mentioning External Storage R/RW etc etc ..... so Now I am wondering if I should revert back to JB 4.2.1 and start over in hopes it will restore my files and Micro SD. what are your opinions????? Open to suggestions.
Or if someone who has an Asus TF300T with a custom rom or factory rom (with a working MicroSD, could possibly take a look at their Platform.xml file and see if what is mentioned in it about External Storage etc .... I really feel like something somewhere that got deleted/wiped was not rewritten during the unbricking of my TF300T.
I Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you may have to offer.
Flash back to stock 4.2.1 JB and still the card does not show up when inserted.
If I add the following lines into my system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file do you think it would bring back the ability to see my External Micro SD?
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
</permission>
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>
<permission name="android.permission.ACCESS_ALL_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="sdcard_all" />
</permission>
Anyone ever try this?
BTW, my Micro Sd was working just fine in the tablet until the accidental data wipe. I am stuck here, I would really like to get the ability to use the Micro SD card/cards again.
Thank you in advance.

It seems there is an unknown issue remaining after things you have done in the past. Please start your TWRP and "Format /Data". It may take one hour plus. Wait patiently until it finishes. After that your system is clean. So you can clean install the ROM of your choice. Simply follow the install instruction given by Timduru carefully!!! Finally the SD card issue should be solved.
Thanks will give it another try.
Several attempts at this using the latest stock rom and my own twrp backup (from when the sd card was showing up) and still not showing up. Tried to change files system in twrp and got this e:block device not present, cannot wipe ext_sdcard .... only close reference I found so far was in the following thread and according to post #16 my sd card partitions are not correct???
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tr...kang-twrp-tf700t-2-8-x-xarea51-t3049395/page2
also, according to twrp manager:
Storage Info
External SD Location
/Removable/MicroSD
But of course it does not show up in file manager. Thoughts?

This thread deals with Data2SD. That's not your problem. The SD card should be FAT32.
However what's the result of Format /Data? Has it been accomplished successfully? Does your TWRP finally show the external SD card?
No, I have yet to get it to show any SD from 128mb to my 8gb card, I have tried them all. The card is formatted in fat32 (I have tried all formats though). The only time TWRP seems to see it is if I want to fix or change the file system, (now when I was in twrp 3.0.2.0 was the last time it worked) TWRP shows it as vfat. If I try to change it I get the error string below (red text).
All of this started when I corrupted the partitions in the tablet and had to flash a factory rom on to get it going again. Since then no SD card, well actually no SD card while it was corrupted either only before the mess I made.
I feel confident that the SD card issue has something to do with where it's actual path or permission might be placed or written. As the card works excellent in my galaxy s5 and Tf101 and Windows. just not the tf300t. Attached several images maybe one of them will give a clue. Keep in mind under mount, when I choose the Ext SD it just greys out and will not accept a check mark for selection, same when I choose where I want to install a file from.
Again thank you for your help.
Well I have tried going back to the latest stock rom and now I am flashed to the latest KatKiss 7.1, but still no luck. is it possible that somehow when I messed up my file partitions that it, that they just will not clear up completely for some reason? Grasping here I know.
This happened to me and I am still currently dealing with this. I believed that there is a problem with that device recognizing the SD card, as in the card is not making contact with the device. The SD card comes up as corrupted when the ROM is running. I had to side load the last few time through TWRP to get a new ROM flashed because I wiped everything. On this last try I was able to get the device to recolonize the SD card by pushing and hold the SD card all the way in and holding it there for the duration of the flash. I went through all the same as you did including flashing back to stock. Sorry you are dealing with this.
Thanks, I will give that a try also when I load my next rom.

Tried the hold the Micro SD card in deal, didn't work for me.
So now I am currently on a clean install of KatKiss 6.0 with same results. Micro SD card not being recognized.
My install process:
Wiped everything then formatted data
Even fastboot erased everything again just in case via fastboot:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase misc
fastboot erase cache
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot bootloader
Flashed KANG TWRP 2.8.7.2
Wiped davlik and cache, then changed data to F2FS file system
Rebooted to Bootloader then entered RCK / KANG TWRP where I did a TWRP BACKUP (it will not backup I know this) so I would have the TWRP folder it would create, so I could load my zips etc, once I was no longer in fastboot. Once in Twrp, you can see internal files then like the TWRP folder, where transferred my zips via the pc to. (now I have a place to load them from)
Loaded the Micro SD just in case with my zip files and also copied them from my pc to the TWRP folder in tablets internal storage.
disconnected from pc and loaded MicroSD into tablet slot.
rebooted into recovery (TWRP still would not load Micro SD ... so plan b) from internal storage via the TWRP folder that was created I flashed all my zip files together:
Flash KatKiss 6.0 rom
Flash the SuperSU 2.52 zip
Flash gapps nano
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
Everything was done per Timduru's instructions, except where I had to load my files via the internal TWRP folder, and I use the Nano gapps over the pico. Also, one tablet reboots to the system i updated the SuperSu Binary.
Some of the Erasing was probably overkill, but I was trying to clean as much as I could in hope my Micro SD would show back up.
Tablet is working fine, in fact very fluid and speedy. I just do not have access to my Micro SD card, except via a usb adapter when used on the pc, which does me no good lol.
At any rate If you do not have a Micro SD card, maybe my process will help someone do a clean install at least.
I hope a solution appears. I just upgraded from cyanogenmod 4.4 to katkiss 6.0 today, and have the same problem . microsd was there for the install, but after booting, ES file explorer doesn't see it. Can see the usb drive plugged into keyboard, but not microsd. frustrating. was thinking of trying to reflash everything but what I am reading in this thread, it seems like that won't help. (btw, there was also issue of tf300 not rooted after install. I reflashed superSU, and after a few reboots and attempted binary updates, suddenly root appeared. I don't know really what fixed it)

What version of TWRP are you running? .... I also had a problem at first with root, but none since and I have flashed every katkiss rom and my back up of JB 4.2.1 and even the fresh stock Asus JB rom with no success as of yet. But I have yet to stop messing with it, going to keep on til I break it, fix it or possibly shoot it. lol
Also, mine still does not work at this time. I actually went online with lj50036 and went through lots of force load commands etc etc and it still never showed up. Crazy thing was at one point it was showing I has 2 Internal Storage folders both with the exact same file size and files within it. I suppose there is a possibility that the card slot stopped functioning in my tablet, but I just keep coming back to my original issue before the card disappeared (corrupted file partitions). I don't know why, but I just feel something somewhere is still fubarred with the file partitions dealing with external storage. Plus with all the research I have done on the issue and such close to it, there seems to be an issue with happening with many devices and custom roms and recovery.
I wish you luck and if I do find a solution I will most definitely post it here.
Issue solved:
Turns out one of the SD Slot connecting pins was broken in the back of the card slot. Oh well, at least it's a 32gb tablet.
Many thanks goes out to Josh lj50036 and the others who tried helping me.
I installed (4 th install, 3 with 6.1) kat kiss naugetella, 7.1. microsd card is now seen. I have no idea what was different about this install other than the 7.1 and different supersu, version 2.79.
still not having keyboard recognized during sleep. previously I could wake the tablet by hitting the keyboard sleep key. No more. have to use the tablet power button.
