[Q] Default Home Launcher Won't Save...HELP! - General Questions and Answers

Okay, I am at my wits end and Google has yielded no helpful results so I am hoping the android community here can come through...
Phone: Note 3
Android Ver: 4.3
Rom: None (Stock).
Rooted: No
Issue:
My home launcher (Currently Nova Prime) will NOT save even though I say "Always" when it prompts me to complete the action using...
When the Issue started:
About 1 week ago out of no where (I had been using Nova Launcher Prime for at least a month).
What Causes it:
1 - Every time I first turn the phone on from "sleep" (turning the screen on) and press the home button
2 - Every time I load up Google now and press "Home".
3 - If I use my phone for an extended amount of time w/o turning the screen off it sometimes re-prompts me when I press the home button on any app.
Examples:
Right now my phone screen is off, when I turn it on and unlock it after its been "asleep" and I press the "home button" on my Note 3, it asks me which launcher I want to use, I select "Nova Launcher Prime" and say "Always use this". From then on it works fine UNTIL I either load up Google Now or turn my screen back off by tapping the power button. At that point, it will once again ask me "Complete action using...".
What I've tried:
1. I've gone into Nova Settings and made sure Nova was selected as the default launcher.
2. I've tried using other launchers (including the stock touch-wiz) and it does the same thing.
3. Uninstalled / Re-Installed Nova
4. Cleared the Cahce / Stopped the launchers (Touch-Wiz, Easy Touch Wiz, and Nova) in apps manager.
The only other "solution" I've found by googleing is to clear the dalvic cache which I cannot do since I am not rooted (but I am strongly leaning that way if it will fix this ANNOYING problem). Can anyone, please anyone help me with this?
Thanks,

Anyone? D:

Since you and I are pretty much at our wits you should just remove the other launchers.
But you definitely need root to fix most of the problems you will have.
However root is not required.
You could temporarily flash a recovery img and wipe the dalvik cache.
(All except for Nova Prime of course)
Nova will always be chosen now.

Can you explain in a little more depth exactly what you mean and how I would do it? Would I be better of just booting into recovery mode and flashing back to stock (is this what you're saying) -- however I am fearful I will just run into the same problem again.

No, definitely don't do that.
What I am saying is for you to root, then flash recovery(rom manager cwm or twrp), then wipe dalvik cache from recovery.
Or root, use titanium backup to remove the touchwiz homescreens. (Default launchers)

So now the noob question.
1. How do I root my note 3
2. Will I need to unlock / wipe my phone to root?
Thanks!

1.It should be in the forums.
2. Depends on the method.
The best method is to use the Type to find your device.... box in the top right corner of the screen.
Then once you are there at the forums for your device you can hit the root info tab to see a video of how to root your device.
Here is a link to the at&t note 3 root info tab.
(You want the forums for your device specifically though. So make sure you go for the forums specific to your carrier and device specifics.)
Wish you the best!

FIXED!!! I had read that apps could cause this so I deleted the last few apps I had downloaded (they were free bongo / drum apps I downloaded for my so to play) and wham! fixed!

Zpad Setup Guide (SMB-A1002-3G) - Updated 14/03/2011

SETUP (USER) GUIDE FOR ZPAD with 3G (SMB-A1002-3G) AKA ZPAD T2
** UPDATED 14th March 2011 **
IMPORTANT NOTES for Zpad
Note 1 - Some software, eg Flash, is not on your ROM (maybe this was installed after manufacture). You need to back up these apps first. I'm not sure of all the apps, as I accidently wiped mine first, thinking they would all be on ROM. Fortunately the only one I did miss was Flash, and this can be added later (see below).
Note 2 - This is NOT my work. It's just the steps I followed to get MY Zpad working the way I wanted it (inc Market and Titanium Backup). People waaay smarter than me worked this out and credit should go to them.
Note 3. This is NOT a ROM, and you don't need to flash a ROM, the Zpad works FAST out of the box (I think Quadrant was 2450 (or 2350) from memory)
Note 4. I setup Wireless and Installed File Expert to access the files I needed from my Windows 7 computer.
1. Install Z4Root Version 1.3.0
This is needed to give you "Admin" Access to your device
1a. Install and Open and follow the steps on screen to Root your Zpad
2. Install Clockworkmod following these instuctions
NOTE: This "formats" your Zpad back to factory settings (your "Admin" access remains)
Original Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
2a. Download ClockworkMod v08 (This version has been found to work best...the newer version causes some issues with some ROMs.) There are two versions available; one for installing ClockworkMod from the internal memory, one for installing it from external memory (microSD/microSDHC card). Download from the original thread above. ** EDIT - It's recommended to use the Internal Memory File and remove your MicroSD card during install/setup **
2b. Unzip the file you chose (cwmod_internal.zip OR cwmod_microsd.zip) to the root folder on the storage option of your choice. This is SDCARD on the ZPAD.
2c. Rename the original Recovery Folder, and move the new Recovery folder from the above ZIP to SDCARD (should now be SDCARD\Recovery)
2d. Move update.zip to SDCARD
2e. Turn off your device.
2f. Press the power button and the Volume+ button at the same time and release them when the Malata splash screen pops up. You should see "Detect a recovery key pressed" pop up in the upper left corner of the screen.
2g. Watch ClockworkMod install. This will not take long. Your tablet will reboot when installation is complete. Nothing will look different unless you enter ClockworkMod by following the steps below…
Entering ClockworkMod:
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install ClockworkMod). Thankfully this time it will not automatically restart and wipe everything.
Navigating CWMod:
Vol+ and Vol- are to scroll up and down, the home button selects an option, and the back button backs up.
BACKUP ROM NOW!!!
(I installed Flash at this point, Version 10.1.95.22 seemed the only one that worked for me??)
3. Install Google Apps (including Market)
The file is; gapps-mdpi-tegra-20101020-signed.zip. You can download it by following the instructions in the thread below.
Original Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842590
Note: Some people have experienced problems with the Android/Google Apps Setup Wizard. I think this is related to Wifi only Zpad's? Thanks to Koaby for figuring out you can delete the setupwizard.apk from the cyanogen mod (gapps-mdpi-tegra-20101020-signed.zip). This fixes the problem.
Note 2: If you are having problems removing setupwizard.apk check out this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12069069&postcount=70
You only need these instructions
3a. Copy download to SDCARD
3b. Hold volume + and power to boot into recovery (go to "advanced")
3c. Choose, choose zip from sdcard
3d. Choose the zip to be applied as an update
3e. Let Zpad boot and complete GMail Login Details (I had problems here, but my GMail details were stored... not sure why)
4. Fix the Market
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245 (Part 3, step 3)
4a. Open the Market app. Once it loads close it (press the home button).
4b. Go into Settings – Applications – Manage Applications – Google Services Framework – Force Stop – Clear Data
4c. Go into Settings – Applications – Manage Applications – Market – Force Stop – Clear Data
4d. Go back to your home screen and open up the market. You should get an error. If not, redo steps 3 and 4 until you do.
4e. Reboot your device. After it starts back up let it sit for a minute or two to let things in the operating system normalize. Open the Market. Reboot your device.
4f. Open the market again and enjoy. You now have Flash and the Android Market. (Keep in mind, this is not the FULL market, it just makes around 99% of it available. It is unknown which apps are not available. There is a full market fix, but it is MUCH more complicated).
5. IMPROVED MARKET
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861044
(Edited out the bits not needed)
5a. Now you are going to re-do the original Market Fix. First, make sure Market is running, and browse around in it for a few seconds. If you don't do this, there may be no cache to clear and for some reason the market fix may not work. Then, go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Running and scroll down to Market. Then hit Clear Cache, followed by Force Stop **DO NOT CLEAR DATA FOR MARKET, JUST CACHE**. Then go back, scroll down to Google Services Framework, hit Clear Data, then Force Stop.
5b. Now try starting Market again and you get the famous Market Error. Now shut down the Zpad, then turn it back on. Wait for Wifi to connect to your network before doing anything!
5c. Now restart Market again. ..... Voila! A truly full market!
Applications I use that work on Zpad
Root Explorer - Access to Root Files (not needed for this setup)
Titanuim Backup - to Backup EVERYTHING after I set it up the way I wanted
Astro + Bluetooth Module
File Expert - To access Win7 PC
Spare Parts (version 2.2) - To see battery/cpu use
Pocket Cloud - Access work server
MoreLocale 2 - Set Location to Australia
Button Savior - So I've got buttons on the left side too
Touchdown - Sync with Exchange Server
MSN Talk - In case I gets some mates one day
Dolphin Browser HD, with addons; Google Translate, Tab History and AdBlooker
Launcher Pro - The Zpad interface is not that good
Lookout - Antivirus
I hope this helps, Mal.
Again, all credit to the original posters, I just thought best to share the steps I followed for other Zpad users.
PS: I have the original ROM from my Zpad. Happy to share if anyone can point me to the best place to upload it.
In case I forget anything or need to add more stuff
zpad just wifi no 3g
I,m assuming this works on the zpad without 3g only wifi as well. Could you confirm.
Thanks
It should work fine. Just make sure you do a backup before step 3 and you'll always be able to go back to standard.
Once it's all running, set it up the way you like, eg mail, apps etc, then install Titanium Backup an get a backup of your settings and apps.
Now if something ever goes wrong you'll be able to go back to your apps and settings or worst case back to Factory settings.
Thanks but issue
Hello
Thanks for your update. I followed your instructions and get to the welcome screen after installing the apps. It states touch the android to begin, which I do it clicks but nothing happens. Any suggestions.
I think from memory there was a "next" button that appeared on the bottom right, I think? It's just the GApps setup I think and I'm pretty sure you can skip it too. If not, try a reset again through clockwork. That's what I did and it seemed to work the second time??
If you have an SD Card in, try removing that and doing it again too.
Cheers, Mal.
Hello again
Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately I can't get passed the touch the android button. bottom right is a button to change language, and bottom left is a button for emergency call.
Reloaded it about 10 times now and no luck. If you think of something let me know.
You did touch the Android Man in the middle right (sorry if you have just thought I'd check).
You could try plugging in a USB mouse, something has gone weird with your touch screen I think???
Same Problem Cannot pass the android men!
Can you talk me through what happened?
You installed clockworkmod, backed up the ROM, then let the system boot. Did everything work at this point?
Then you copied the gapps and rebooted but entering recovery this time. You selected the gapps zip and let it boot. This is where its got to the Android man and you couldn't get past right??
Yes, I try to bypass the ANDROID man welcome but nothing seems to work I redo all the steps several times now. I long press the home and acces app killer, even go to setting an try to shutdown all running apps but nothing happen. Mine is the SMB-1002-WIFI model. all help will be appreciated. And thanks
Did you set your wifi up and have internet access. You need this when you start it up as it will try to log on with your gmail account from memory.
Yes I did connect to the WIFI with no problem, really fast indeed. I also have acces to the system settings by long press the home butom, but cannot go by the android man everything else is hid behind
I think the Android man is the google apps setup wizard. Maybe I had my gmail setup already and that's why it seemed to work?? Give that a try if you can?
I think I forced closed the setup wizard on mine and that seemed to work too.
Let me know.
Backup of Rom
Hi,
Are you able to post a copy of a backup of your original Rom as I only have the chinese version and I don't know how to use the 3g.
Thanks
Jonesie
Yep, happy to upload my stock ROM.
Can anyone recommend a place to upload my ROM. It's about 230Mb in total, so I need a place that can take files over the usual 200mb limit.
hotfile.com seems to have an upload limit of 400MB.
And you can download free. It's like rapidshare, only seems to have faster download.
I try everything, but nothing seems to work. All the apps run smoothly behind the "Android men" (SetupWizard)
I Force Stop Setup wizard - when try to go home setup wizard start again
any ideas are welcome
Can you enter your Gmail account by opening the Gmail app? That may work?
Yes I do with no succes.
I came up with a cheap solution.
First I delete the setupwizard.apk from the cyanogen mod (gapps-mdpi-tegra-20101020-signed.zip)
I follow your guide step by step *include the installation of flash
Infamous "Android Man" is no more!
I create a google account, No problem
So far everything is working. I will keep you updated

[Q] Accidently deleted the launcher on 2.2

I accidentally deleted my launcher application while messing around in Titanium backup. My phone was getting hung up on the Samsung boot screen when I tried to restart it. I have now tried a factory reset, and the phone now boots to a black screen, I can receive calls and texts but can't access anything manually. I tried installing from the web market but that is not working. Does anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated....I am desperate.
Edit: Also I can't mount my phone for some reason x_x

If you do a hard reset, you can restore the whole system. Deleting the launcher while booted in Android won't delete anything from the ROM and can be restored that way. But if you don't mind using a different launcher, you can load an apk of your desired launcher on the card and then find a way to get into any screen that will let you get to a file manager. Then you can install the launcher from the apk you loaded on the card. Mess around with the buttons and see if you can't pull up any screen that will eventually get to a file manager.

I did a hard reset, but now it has the same problem - no launcher. It is just a black screen. I played around with it for a long while before coming here trying to figure out any way to get into any menus etc...but nothing.
If you had your device in debugging mode, then you can always download an alternative launcher such as launcherpro on your computer, put it in your platform tools directory and install it through adb. If you need further help with this post your comments and I will read them later and reply.

P.s. if this helped press the thanks button
hard reset doesn't fix apps in system partition, so you can't restore without adb to push a new launcher.

Is the phone rooted?
Do you have a custom kernel with CWM recovery?
If you do, you should be able to install the launcher using cwm.
There's a specific forum for your phone in XDA. You might find answers there to.
Had same problem, now fixed
Although I have a g2x and I'm running a 2.3.4 rom, this should still work. I did the same exact thing to my phone. I had my wife send me an email (gmail) with a link to google in it. When I recieved the notification, I swiped down, opened email, clicked link, then searched "Go Launcher EX apk download". Once I found a good download for this launcher and downloaded it, I was good to use my phone again. Piece of cake

Hey i'm a noobie but i have a 100% way on how to fix your problem i was once too in that situation and all i did was enter recovery mode (no cwm/twrp) factory reset 2x, clear cache 2x and "Rebooted" When i was in setup wizard it asked me to set up my gmail account. Wifi is recommended but 3G/4G is also fine. If on wifi it will not connect to google servers but instead give you the option to connect to wifi. Connect to your wifi and finish the setup. When your at the black screen you should get a notification for updates on the play store. Tap on it and it SHOULD take you to the play store. After that search the desired launcher you want. (ADW Launcher, LauncherPro, Go Locker etc.

Transform Ultra HomeScreen/Launcher

Yesterday after downloading and installing a sweet customizable homescreen "SPBShell" and used it, it kept asking me to buy the application from market which i didn't want to. Earlier this morning, i disabled it's access to the internet and stopped market from accessing the internet and had to uninstall GoLauncher EX and my default homescreen so i wouldn't be asked to chose a default homescreen each time i press my home button. So finally the new Launcher got on my nerve and i uninstalled it without installing a new launcher and then i restarted my phone, now my phone can't get past the SAMSUNG screen.
Sorry for the long message but i seriously need help_____ THANKS IN ADVANCED
I would download an apk for a different launcher (like adw or launcher pro), boot into clockwork go under mounts and storage and mount USB storage. (Assuming you have adb set up) push that apk to the /data/app folder with adb. Reboot and see if that works. Otherwise I would wipe data/factory reset if that doesn't fix it.
Hope I helped

Thanks but i wished you read through the post before, i said i can't get into the phone since the screen stops at the SAMSUNG after vibrating. It doesn't get to the HomeScreen
Do you have clockworkmod recovery on your phone? You won't need to get to the homescreen if you have clockworkmod recovery.
No i don't. DO i need it?
Im guessing you had a pirated version of spbshell? All you have to do is restore a nandroid backup in your recovery.
Yes, if you want to get your phone back to normal with all your data. You could boot into normal recovery and do a factory reset, but all your data would be gone. What is your phone model?
So you rooted your phone, didn't get a custom recovery, didn't make a nandroid backup, dowloaded pirated apps (which could have very well been a virus), deleted the stock launcher, deleted go launcher, and deleted spbshell?
I don't even know if he's rooted his phone lol

You can't delete system apps if you are not rooted. And for his phone not to be working at all, the stock launcher had to be deleted as well. Unless he is using a ROM with golauncher as stock.
Ok guys am sorry for late reply, but my phone is back to normal.
Like i read people saying "Press up and down Volume button and boot into recovery", However, that didn't work for me. I got my phone back when it got to low batttery and showed my main screen before shutting down, so i had to keep the charger ready and when it showed the main screen again to shutdown, i plugged in the charger and since i had no homescreen but i have Advanced Task Killer running so i opened up my search and typed "My files" and reinstalled my default launcher and the phone is working now. I didn't know i have CWM in my system until right now as am trying to format my phone and it showed me the menu which i chosed what to do. Once again, Thanks for the reply and help

[q] help! Help! Help!

Issue: Frequent STOPPED WORKING with com.gappas.com, com.phone.com and the other basic applications!
What I did:
1. Rooted the phone;
2. Installed ZAEM Launcher;
3. Used SD Maid to remove stock applications including the default LAUNCHER!
Now: No dialer, no contact list and the phone is actually stuck at the blank screen now.
Device:
Manufacturer: Symphony
Model: W100
Android: ICS
I realize I messed up removing the stock launcher, I didn't know it would also remove the fundamental applications.
Tried several FACTORY RESET (POWER + VOLUME UP) aka RECOVERY, but nothing worked. It seems SD Maid removed the stock applications from the RECOVERY image as well.
Please help me out. Thanks in advance.
Send a private message to this guy.
UPDATE
WORKAROUND for people with similar case.
WARNING: SD Maid will remove applications from the recovery image too, use with caution;
Steps:
1. Give it a factory reset with RECOVERY option;
2. Root the device;
3. Complete the setup wizard as far it takes you;
4. Upon setup wizard crash and NO LAUNCHER stuck situation, access SETTINGS by pulling down the top STATUS BAR;
5. Allow application installation from UNKNOWN SOURCEs & USB DEBUG MODE;
6. Use ADB to install ZEAM LAUNCHER (you can use management applications like WonderShare MobileGo as well);
After a while, you will see the ZEAM LAUNCHER appearing as the default launcher, configure and make it your own. From now onwards, this is your system default launcher and keep missing the stock one
Note:
1. With every RECOVERY RESET, you will need to install ZEAM LAUNCHER this way
2. I used ZEAM LAUNCHER, I believe you can actually go with any launcher;

Anyway ..... i mean you still can use other launchers right ?

And before doing this kind of thing you should always make nandroid backup !
And i removed my stock launcher for like ages ago .... first install the launcher you like > Set as default >> then remove the stock launcher !

There is no "recovery image" unless you make one in cwm or so.
The system apps are on the system partition the only way to remove a system app (if you don't want to just freeze it), is to delete it from there.
Upon factory reset, the /data partition (and some others) get wiped and the apps in /system/app (like the launcher) get reinstalled.
You can put apps there yourself and they will survive a factory reset.

Yes it is working now with another launcher. I didn't know SD Maid would affect the recovery image and things will be lost forever! Is there a way to flash custom ROM on W100?
Thanks for your time.

Yeah, that is where I wonder. After uninstalling the stock launcher with SD Maid, even a recovery didn't reinstall the launcher!

Hi,
Sorry, I was on the go waiting for bus and couldn't respond enough.
Yeah I applied the work around and the devices is fantastic now.
My mistake was that I couldn't realize SD Maid would remove the stock applications in a ways where they cannot be restored even with a RECOVERY! Bad, very very bad... lol
The device was stuck after turning on, where it would look for the launcher to manage the system interface, it was a partially HUNG situation, as there was no launcher to manage the interface and other basic operations. I used WonderShare MobileGo to install a 3rd party launcher, Zaem Launcher, and within 5 seconds, when the system had another try to initiate the default launcher, Zaem Launcher kicked in, ad it registered itself as a launcher and there were no stock launcher, so the system assumed it the launcher to start This was nice... very very nice.
But I know, if I give the device another RECOVERY, POWER + VOLUME UP, the same thing will happen again and I would have to follow the same workaround to make the device usable.
So far I can understand, the only thing that can bring the device to it's original state is a way to flash an intact ROM, preferably the stock ROM came with it. But the trouble is, this device has RECOVERY LOADER 3E which is well known no to be penetrated Please let me know if you have a way to replace this RECOVERY LOADER so other ROMs can be flashed on this device.
Thank you again Sir for your kind respons.
You are confusing something, SD Maid did not remove anything that can't be restored.
If you remove a system app, with any tool that can do that, a FACTORY RESET won't restore it.
You will either have to flash the ROM again, thus restoring the original content of /system/app, or copy the missing file over there again manually.

Dear Sir,
Yes you are correct and am sorry for my little knowledge in this. However, I wanted to mean what you said, check my earlier post, the only way seems to be flashing a ROM.
I said this because, I thought FACTORY RESET and RECOVERY are not the same thing. A factory reset is suppose to clean the user data only while a recovery should bring the device back to it's manufacturer state, by flashing the system with original set of OS and applications.
Although, in the recovery mode, it says FACTORY RESET, but it does more than that, I hope So I said I did recoveries, not factory resets. Still, I think you are correct, and you already know what I meant to describe.
Thank you again Sir for your time.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I think Google's stock JB ROM is worth a try but cannot find a way to flash it on W100 through RECOVERY MODE
Also do you think if copy all the contents from the /system partition of another W100 to mine, my W100 will come back to the stock apps situation as it were?
Yes it will work! But just take the files you only need ™

[Q] apps, launcher always restarting, slow. any fix?

running 5.0.1. Google Now launcher seems to restart all the time, as well as many other apps, and it is running very slowly. I've heard maybe there is a memory leak? Any fix for this?
You have three choices:
1. Reboot
2. Back to KitKat
3. Wait for 5.1

4. Use another launcher and make it look like GNL, disable GNL.

Are you sure it's GNL?
It's a really random lollipop memory leak, some people get it really bad (like you seem to) some seem to have no issues (like me) your best option is to just reboot at least once a day but obviously you may need more than one depending on how bad it is

What do you think?
Ofc I'm not sure. To me it's some app he's got installed. I run LRX22C (5.0.1) and I don't need to reboot my device everyday. I mentioned disabling GNL cos wth not, worth a shot. I'd be way more agressive about it. I'd already flashed factory img for sure, as soon as i'd notice something wrong.
4 clean master. As well as speeding the phone by cleaning junk left it has a block list you can add to. I've only 3 apps that have permission to run on their own. The others are not frozen. They just stop when not used
Thanks all, what is 4 clean master, and how do I get back to stock launcher?

If you've changed launcher, find your new launcher in settings/apps and clear it's defaults. Then press the home button
