The Best Camera App? - Xperia Z1 Themes and Apps

We all know that the Stock Sony camera app sucks
Superior auto didn't live upto the expectations we had with the hardware(exmor rs sensor, etc, etc) that Sony provided to us ....and naturally we were forced to move to other 3rd party camera apps :-/
But the number of camera apps there is humongous and each and every camera app gave different results, had little different features, making it more difficult to choose one.
Many camera apps were ported from different devices (Z1,LG G2,Samsung S4 Google edition,Lenovo,..) each giving different results but altogether they gave better results than the Stock Camera app.
So I began testing different camera apps,,,ranging from ports to the basic playstore downloadables ..
Had to go through a lot of them ( Z1,LG G2,Samsung S4 Google edition,Lenovo,Camera mx,Camera zoom fx,camera FV-5,and many,many others that I don't remember right now )
I found that for full manual(almost) control Camera FV-5 was better than any other app that I tested, and the fact that it could save images in lossless format(PNG),,definitely made it superior.
And then I realised that manual controls was not every one's cup of tea , and also not suitable for capturing something real quick :-/
The need for "Full auto" arises
So the search began, all over again....
It finally came to an end on this app by ALMALENCE called 'A Better Camera'
At first I was not impressed by it's clunky UI, it's not bad but not great either, but for full auto mode, does that.really matter??
But when I started exploring the app furthermore,I realized that I had a decent set of features.Started clicking photos rightaway
It really takes some great photos in all lighting conditions ,and in various scene modes. The photos come out to be really sharp and crisp, color reproduction, saturation, contrast levels were really spot-on.
HDR was the true "icing on the cake" for this app..here I came to know what really HDR is meant to be ( a little noise is observed here, but can pe reduced from settings)
Panorama can capture full 360 degree resolution(20600 x 1892 )
Single Shot Jpeg images come out on an average 2-4 mbs.
Video mode takes decent quality videos too.
So the result was that this was the best camera app that I've tested till now. Also, the developers of this app are currently working on bringing PNG to this app,and hopefully making the UI b a little better
So those who are really disappointed by the stock Sony Camera App this is "the best"app to go for...Go ahead and try this app and compare, you'll definitely notice the difference (& upload them here)

For Manual controls : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46111181
UPDATE : Sometimes, you simply can't note any differences between images produced by different camera apps,, this is because of the Bravia engine.
The Bravia engine saturates the colors evenly and sharpens the image, improves contrast, fixes exposures, etc, etc ... No matter how good or bad the photo has been clicked... and yes that's what it's for,and it does its job pretty neatly. But when u turn that off or transfer it to any other device or PC,, then u can clearly note the minute differences in exposure, saturation, vividness, and the details when fully zoomed in.Try it

Tested too all of them: ( Z1,LG G2,Samsung S4 Google edition,Lenovo,Camera mx,Camera zoom fx,camera FV-5,and many,many others that I don't remember right now )
Thanks a lot, I'll try and let you know!
The only thing that btw I didn't notice is the "lose-less" of FV-5 with png, but I'll happy to re-test it again.

Hi, in a better camera app there's iso settings? i can't find it

I can attest to pro capture! Pictures in low lighting are way better than stock (as far as noise and lighting is concerned). Though I'm really disappointed about the z1's picture quality... I feel like cheated by Sony and reviewers that state the z1 takes good pictures!

It does. Just needs some proper software.
@Rumman Shaikh: thanx for recommending "A Better Camera". BTW: there's a discount on premium features at the time.

I really miss a bigger 16:9 mode than my ZL had! My ZL had 9MP 16:9 mode I was using it all the time loved it. But here with the Z1 I have only 8MP 16:9 mode.
Whats the point of having a 20MP cam on a phone and cant shoot a 13MP 16:9 picture?

Sorry, but if you spend 500 or 600 bucks on a phone what's another 2 bucks for a piece of software which might actually help you out.
In the end I don't think any of the custom apps actually produce better photos, but ProCapture indeed allows other resolution 16:9 pics which the sony app doesn't. So yeah, I wouldn't make such a big deal of spending these 2 bucks if it brings you waht you're looking for.

I also use ProCapture and i really like it. There's just one thing that's really bugging me with all those camera apps...
Isnt there any way to use the hardware button to start another app than stock cam "when screen is off"?
It is working when the screen is turned on but when it's off i always have to press the button twice :crying:
press 1 turns screen on
press 2 starts any cam app
i tried a lot to enable it with 1 press but none of it is working.

Alternate Camera App for Play

hey guys i just noticed that our camera doesnt support zoom -.-
is there anyway by how we can port some custom app or somthing by which we can enable zoom and hopefully HD video recording(assuming that its possible bcuz many phones having 5mp cameras have it)
and also it would be good if we could use the "R" button for taking pics
I've tried LOADS of camera apps for this exact reason, and most of them come up saying that the camera does not support zoom, so i guess it is the actual hardware, not the program that is to blame its a same really, the only thing letting this phone down so far, that i have found, is the camera on it, tho i was used to my Nokie N82 8mp, with its AMAZING camera!!
i know its sad why why SE doesnt make devices perfect!! all of the devices have some or the other thing missing
I see no point in digital zoom az its like cropping the full size picture!
There must be an app somewhere that allows zoom. Anyone tried to get the xperia x10 app?
I can't believe this a lot pf people complained how the iphone didn't have zoom now Sony does this?

+1 on that! Quality seriously degrades
Yea, digital zoom is mostly pointless.
All it does is degrade the picture quality by cropping it, which you can do on your PC after you have taken it.
I have another question.
Is there zoom during video?
Nope :S

Camera Zoom FX and Vignette support zoom and work ok after playing with settings. I think camera zoom FX compresses even unzoomed images to look worse than with stock camera. Vignette does not open right at default but after going through some setting I could fix it. Hope it helps.
I must say I was very surprised that SE haven't made a bespoke camera app for the XPlay, bit naff to have the basic GB one only
Guys, our camera hardware doesn't support any sort of zoom what so ever, disappointing I know. But quite honestly, zoom on a phones camera(unless its a pretty high megapixel camera), usually sucks.

I'm not bothered about having zoom in the app, as digital zoom is pointless and is less effective than zooming in to a full size pic with Photoshop or similar. What I would like is a fully fledged camera app though, with filters, proper settings, panorama/HDR mode etc which is all software so is perfectly possible.
Likewise, I have no interest in the zoom but is there any way to get a camera app with the interface like that on the Arc? I realise we can't have the 3D stuff/sweep etc. but just the interface would be good...can't stand the stock android app.

Having tested a few 3rd party camera apps on my N5 yesterday I can say they all seem to be bugging out a bit at the moment.
I can also say, for gods sake, why are there no 3rd party camera apps for android with a UI that doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out. All I want is something neat like camera+ for iOS, is it too much to ask?

Does that mean no 3rd party cam app will likely ever operate acceptably with it?
Hope not, I was counting on some manual control options (that aren't in stock) to try and squeeze out some quality from this cam.
Give Focal a try.
I'm generally "not happy" with the camera so far (understatement). So far "A better camera" is the best. Here's what I've tried, I'll try to be brief:
Stock camera sort of focuses but can still be blurry, and sucks at low light and the menu stinks.
Focal isn't able to focus well.
Moto X camera seems to work but is lacking in options.
Camera FV-5 looks like a nice camera app with tons of features, but had a couple force closes and the demo is WAY too limiting to see if I can actually get a decent shot out of it. If android had a longer return period for purchases I would try it out.
A Better Camera does a good job of focusing and taking a sharp picture. It's fast and so far, has some nice features, the UI looks a little low res, but that's pretty minor.
if anyone has any others to comment about, please share.

The phone has been out for less than a week. Give the devs the chance to at least update the apps.
If you're new to the nexus line, better get used to this. Your phone gets android updates first, which means that at Day0 of each update a lot of your 3rd party apps will stop working
Maybe the camera app from LG G2 is worth a try?
The camera apps are buggy. Maybe due to the bad auto focus in the stock camera ? Hopes this gets fix because when it focus right the pictures are gorgeous from looking at the screen.

Try Lenovo Super Camera app. I used it on S3 and it kept crashing however on N5 its working a lot better than the stock app. I didn't try all mods and effects however I tested HDR mode and kind of liked it better than stock HDR+ but YMMV ... so give it a shot ... installs like a regular apk. Please post your experience here as I just got my phone a few hours ago so still looking for best apps.

P.S. By the way I am using 3.1.3 and since its working I am not going to bother updating to 3.5.5
My problem is the lack of burst mode on the stock camera. Other than that and the limited settings, I'm quite happy with the way the shots come out. I've tried a few 3rd party apps so far with burst shot but they all seem to be geared towards slower phones so they tend to severely reduce output quality to compensate.
Come on Google....sort the camera app.
Maybe a petition might help?

Same here. I've purchased quite a few and none beat this combo for IQ. We really are at the mercy of the hardware.
Just got Lollipop, retried FV5, and definitely love its manual iso and exposure time control, as well as raw dng support. Processing the dng files with PS express, I get great results in low light, noticeably better than stock hdr+. You can browse thru the dngs with slingshot and share/ send them to PS express
Camera FV-5 only support PNG (for now), not DNG.

Another one I've found is quite good is Snap Camera.
You should add what rom you are using because it's a VERY different thing to ask for a best camera on STOCK than on AOSP.
Choices are completely different and results too.

I agree with MasterTB. There is already one post for comparing cameras, with images as a samples. I made zoomed images 100% and made preview of exact same place with different cameras, so you can compare shadows, medium tones and high tones between all 3 cameras. The best was stock camera (stock rom), after that ported g2 camera (CM12) and after that CM camera.
So if you are using some custom rom witch is not based on stock, thats when you need to compare because you actually need better camera.
Anyway, as many people mentored xcamera as good one, i thing i will give it a test ride.

Yes, it's huge difference. I hope that someone will port stock G3 camera. I planned to download few more app's and do tests but dont have time for that.
If someone want to take shots, i will be glad to make 100% zoom and compare them. Generally looking at the picture, you dont notice that much difference, there are few but not much. When you zoom image you can see that images are completely different.
This proves that stock roms are better if you like photos

Im running blisspop - first time in a year that i flashed a non stock rom, why? - cause i heard that it now supports 4k, unfortunately it doesnt really work properly at all, the quality i NOTHING like 4k or even near to 1080p.
Ive been using Google Camera - ive tried many but this seems to be best when HDR is enabled.
My HTC port still has Chinese language enabled, not helpful.

What I've seen so far, snapdragon camera gets the least amount of noise.

Google Camera is the best for me.
Try cameraMX from google play store. It has lot of features.
I miss miui camera too. Slow motion, the speed of shots and focus... HDR doesnt work in original CM12 camera..
I am testing CameraZoom. The worst: I had to pay to get some extra features, HDR, Time Lapse.. etc...
Im thinking in come back miui7 again only for the camera app.. Please, If anybody knows how to install MIUI camera in CM12.1 .....
Thanks

use oppo camera one of the best found till now for every working feature including slomo and best quality among all camera that support the cm roms
Snapdragon camera 2.1 as for me has the best noise suppression.
Tried before: Moto camera, Camera IPS, Camera FV5, Oppo camera, Google camera, Proshot etc.
Snap looks best for me. Has great both auto and manual shots.

Guys, try the Snapdragon Camera + Sensei Kernel + Resurrection Remix.
For noise issues change Contrast, Saturation and most importantly Sharpness to Level 6 in snapdragon camera(from settings)
This is as good as MIUI's stock camera. Quote me if it helped.

If you mean the camera, kernel and rom they're all here on XDA.
The Camera settings are in the gear settings icon in the Snapdragon Camera app itself, you just have to scroll down
