[Q] Switching from N4 - best way? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, so I have an N4 with an AT&T microSIM that is tied to a contract on my previous lumia 900 - which was LTE, so the microSIM is LTE, I think. I got the N4 earlier this year but decided I wanted the N5 after all... so I got the n5 now, and I want to know the easiest way to switch to the new device. Should I reset and wipe the N4 with the AT&T microSIM still in it? Or should I move the microSIM over to the N5 first? Does it matter?
Thanks,
Kalle

I don't think it matters. Just pop the sim out and pop the sim in...

Turn N4 off. Remove sim card. Insert into N5. Turn N5 on. Achievement unlocked!

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I was just wondering in terms of getting the N4 ready for sale/reuse by someone else... The reset doesn't need the SIM in it, right?

Stick with the n4 and sell the n5 brand new in box

Why? Don't you like your N5? I was looking forward to having LTE again, and the 4.4 full Google experience launcher ... but perhaps all of that will come to the N4 eventually...
What reasons would you give to keep the N4? It is pristine

You can mod LTE on your n4. I feel the n5 isn't that big of a difference from my Nexus 4

If you have both, just use the new one that you got - since it is not currently tied to another phone, it should work regardless. (I assume the old one from your GS4 will work too - but since you have a new one, I'd use that instead - and keep the old one with the GS4 in case you want to sell it or activate it later)
Whichever is best for you and of course it's a Micro SIM.

[Q] Question on buying used S3

I have been looking at the listings in the swap forum and would like to buy a S3. Question I have is: If I buy a S3 that is unlocked and rooted and running a custom rom, will they activate at a Verizon store or should I activate it on their webpage. I hope to buy one in the coming days. Right now I am trying to decide between the S3 or S4. Leaning towards the S3 to save money, but the S4 sure looks good......

Either is fine.
If you already have a microSIM that's active, you don't need to take it into a store. Just pop it in the phone and it should be ready to go. I've swapped my SIM between my Rezound -> GNex -> now my S3. Only time I had to go in was when I went from Rezound -> GNex, because I needed to get a microSIM, since the Rezound used a standard-sized SIM.
standard size sims can be trimmed down also i did that when i swapped from my rezound to the s3

Never owned a Galaxy Sx

Hello. I have had nothing but Nexus phones for the last few years. I really like the S6, but am not really sure on a few things. Let me just ask the questions I have, and see if some kind soul will answer them.
1. I'm guessing short of buying a way overpriced international version, there's no way to get an unlocked/carrier-free version of this phone?
2. I use Straight Talk with my Nexus 6. What is the best way (without buying a Straight Talk branded phone) to use an S6 with Straight Talk?
3. If I buy an AT&T S6 outright, do I have to buy service with them? If so, can I cancel after a month and switch to ST?
4. Compared to the Nexus line, is it hell to root an S6 or load custom ROMs on one?
Thanks again for all the help. If anyone is wondering, I do love my N6, but I started running lately, and the 6" form factor is just too much of a beast to strap onto my arm or carry in a pouch. The S6 would be perfect for that.
Anyone?
i can help you with the last question...i think the easiest android phone to flash roms is the galaxy....i used S2 S4 and now S6....and they are the easiest...its simple....maybe you wont find many custom roms for the S6 because of its only exynos variant...but its easy to flash them..

1. Tmobile is the closest you'll get to the international version but your going to have to get it SIM unlocked (try swappa)
2. Take SIM out of n6 and put in s6 I use my s6 on straight talk with no problems you just might have to set the APN settings
3. If you buy s6 outright i do not believe you will have to have service with them should be able to purchase and put your ST sim right in
4. Cannot comment on this but looks like someone already did

Well, the easiest phones on which to flash ROMs are the Nexus phones. But I just wanted to make sure the S6 wasn't too difficult as well.
Thanks for your response.

Thanks for the answers. Where did you get your S6? I can buy the 32GB version from T-Mobile for $629.99. If the one Verizon sells was able to be used with ST, I'd buy it, because they have the lowest prices by far (64GB version for $699). Any idea if the Vz one would work with ST?
Got my gold carrier unlocked S6 for $720 shipped via fedex 2nd day. Not bad I'd say.

I got mine from the ebay seller that had them for $700 the first week, Theres a post on here about using verizon on straight talk, if its like all their others you will get annoyed by the "incorrect sim" message they like to parade around

T-Mobile Note 5 on Verizon so you can get unlocked bootloader

Anyone tried this yet?
I know in the past, the GSM phones have not been compatible within Verizon's network. But I've heard that has changed recently? And I'm new to Verizon, so I unfortunately don't know the in's and out's of CDMA and what is or isn't possible.
But from my limited research, the Samsung official website lists specs for each carriers Note 5 and both TMO + VZW appear to be capable of using the same bands?

dont think the tmo can get the cdma/3g of verizon. so the tmo may work but you would only have 4g nothing else

We need to test this theory asap, if the tmobile verison will work I'm buying one tomorrow. I might sign up on tmobile just to test if no one can answer the question
As far as I know, the GSM slot on most Verizon high-end devices has always been unlocked for Global GSM use. I know that as a fact, having used a Verizon G2, and a Note 4 in India, with absolutely no issues whatsoever. However, that may or may not work for US GSM networks. But worth popping in a T-Mo SIM and checking it out :good:
And yes, even if a T-Mo SIM were to work, you will only have 4G, nothing else, as rightly pointed out by @oneandroidnut

All jokes aside I think in the next couple of days I'm going to go signup and buy a tmobile note 5 and try it... I will return the phone within the 14 day period. Worst case scenario I lose $35.

Oh that isn't good
And now they make your wait 45 days before they will give you the code.
Too many people bought the phone and skipped country / changed carriers immediately after purchase.

As I understand it you have to meet the following criteria for the unlock codes:
1) You must own the device (no payment plan)
2) You must wait 43 or 45 days. I've heard both. I assume this is to let the return policy play out.
Either way, you should still be able to run the experiment.

Their restocking fee is $50!
Their phones now will only unlock with their app and they will approve only after you have used the device on an active account for 40 days OR paid in full and wait 15 days (past remorse period). But the latter is really hard because the "system" really works on the 40 day rule and it's hard to get an override.
I don't think it will work on VZW.
In the past, I've tried my VZW sim cards in unlocked ATT and MetroPCS S5s and it just doesn't work. Even worse is on my account I have the dreaded Non VZW device and even after putting that SIM back in a legitimate VZW phone that number is locked meaning I cannot make changes to it on myVZW. And when you go into a corporate store to get it fixed you get that typical "You did what?" attitude!
Unfortunately the days of having freedom on both VZW and ATT seem limited indeed.
The Note 5 and Edge+ do generally run great out of the box, however. With an Adguard subscription I'm satisfied. If Android-M has more customization built in (center clock, statusbar customization, etc) then truly no need for me to root. I will miss Titanium BU, however.
There's always Nexus, but they take some getting used to in comparison. It's reminiscent of driving a Caddy or Lincoln for years and then getting in a Mercedes. Which isn't a bad thing mind you, but if you have to work under the hood you will be in for some changes.
I'm more interested in the various AOSP ROM's that will eventually pop up.
Like SlimPop or SlimMellow (eventually).
Not all phones have the same bands.
But it seems like the T-Mobile Note 5 *might* have most of the Verizon bands. Or all of them?
In the past, you could pay like $5-$15 on eBay to unlock your phone through a 3rd party person. I've used a T-Mobile phone on AT&T with good luck, but both were GSM.
If a TMO G5 pops up used in the next few weeks (in my budget), I'm totally going to see if it can be unlocked on eBay and then see if it'll work with my VZW account. :good:
I'm tired of dealing with Verizon bs... I'm switching to the nexus 6p anyway, but I wanted to try before buying the nexus. To me it's more than rooting, it's the freedom to do what I want to my phone. The new nexus lacks flagship device status, but you gain freedom and the phone works on all us carriers period.

The new Motorola Pure is what the Note 5 should have been.
Only thing the N5 has over it is glove-mode, which is something I actually really, really like having.
But if the TMO N5 doesn't work on Verizon, I'll have to go with the Motorola Pure. Which can be rooted on Verizon (I think).

Thre Note 5 has *a lot* of things over the Moto X Pure... Fingerprint scanner, faster cpu, faster memory, faster storage rates, nicer screen, stylus...
But in the end, if the Pure is a better for for your uses, then get it. But don't act like glove mode is the only thing the Note 5 has over the Pure...

the moto x was junk. note 5 smoked it in all ways

at&t phones w/ dev

so we currently are on verizon. our signal is weak at home and heard at&t services our area well.. so im realy cinsidering the switch.. it sucks going outside to make phone calls..
what at&t devices have development going on?? root, backup.. you know..
we switched to verizon a year ago from tmobile. i got a htc dsire 626 that had no dev whatsoever.. going from a rom junkie to no means at all was crazy.. i hate phones with buttons but in this case it seems if i have to do it, i have to do it..
I know the feeling. I thought the Galaxy S4 would be a "nice cheap upgrade" from the Captivate (Galaxy S, AT&T branded ofc) which spoiled me to no end. I'd love to find something as open as that.
Right now, I'm looking at just outright outta-contract buying an unlocked phone and just doing the legwork to make sure it works with AT&T antenna wise.
Of course everyone's needs and wants are different but amongst my group the winners seem to be OnePlus Three, LG G4/5, for those who are flash-happy.
