at&t phones w/ dev - Android General

so we currently are on verizon. our signal is weak at home and heard at&t services our area well.. so im realy cinsidering the switch.. it sucks going outside to make phone calls..
what at&t devices have development going on?? root, backup.. you know..
we switched to verizon a year ago from tmobile. i got a htc dsire 626 that had no dev whatsoever.. going from a rom junkie to no means at all was crazy.. i hate phones with buttons but in this case it seems if i have to do it, i have to do it..

I know the feeling. I thought the Galaxy S4 would be a "nice cheap upgrade" from the Captivate (Galaxy S, AT&T branded ofc) which spoiled me to no end. I'd love to find something as open as that.
Right now, I'm looking at just outright outta-contract buying an unlocked phone and just doing the legwork to make sure it works with AT&T antenna wise.
Of course everyone's needs and wants are different but amongst my group the winners seem to be OnePlus Three, LG G4/5, for those who are flash-happy.

[Q] Vivid vs Sensation

Well i didnt see any threads come up that followed this topic, and i dont want to post it in either one of the individual forums to avoid bias. But as the title asks.
Im still on a Touch pro 2 (dont hate plz) and its SLOW and im ready to retire it. I know i want an android phone. These are the two ive found, primarily because of the dual core and the Sense. (which is why i dont care for the GS2S
Sensation
+ Dual Core
+ Looks better on the outside (i prefer round edges)
+ Has decent specs
- Is not native to AT&T (my carrier, and the best carrier for my area)
- Has a bit lower specs than the Vivid
Vivid
+ Dual Core
+ Native to AT&T
+ Has better specs than the Sensation (at first glance anyway)
- AT&T brand is bootloader locked (no cutsom roms?)
- The back looks like crap
- Not a fan of square phones
So what are the impressions of people who have used these phones? Which is more recommended?
I prefer the Sensation. When my AT&T contract is up, if HTC keeps the next version of the Sensation's looks similar, I will go back to T-Mobile and get one...tentatively, anyway.
umm.. anymore feedback on this?
Dam.. now i just got wind of the HTC Amaze, and it looks REally good.. *ponders*
I have the Vivid and it is a really good phone out of the box but the locked bootloader is a huge letdown for me. I got spoiled with all of the development for my Inspire I suppose.
I'm sure it will get unlocked eventually but no telling when though.
I've never messed with the Sensation so I can't compare the 2. But if you are grandfathered into the unlimited plan on AT&T and in a LTE area I would go with the Vivid, unless you don't want to wait for the bootloader unlock.

Ive never had a data plan, so id have to add it on. If i get it non-contract i can use the cheaper plan, but i think even grandfathered, if you upgrade on contract they force you on to the new pricing (could be wrong)
As far as time goes im not in a big hurry. Im working on getting a new computer first so it would realistically be a few months before i picked up a new phone. By then im sure something even better might be out.. who knows.
i got the sensation cause of its looks to tell the truth, i know vivid has slight better specs but its really really ugly i woudnt be happy everytime i look at it lol

return this phone for anogher lte device?

For those that purchased this phon on launch day our return window is closing soon. Is anyone else considering returning the phone for another att lte device? What lte devices are coming soon for att?
There are only 2 right now. The vivid and skyrocket. The vivid is htc with a slower processor, and locked botloader.. but there is aan lg phone coming out soon suposidley the last lte phone of the year

according to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)
its the same processor in both. the international Raider is clocked at the same speed and the AT&T variant (Vivid) is slightly Underclocked from the factory. but they are both capable of the same speeds.
You don't even say why you want to return it.
I've personally contemplated getting the Galaxy Nexus (unlocked), but I'm torn between the two.
The main GN selling points for me are the higher res display, notification light and NFC out of the box. On the other hand, it's got a crappy camera, no LTE (plus I'm hearing lousy signal and data speeds on AT&T).
What I love about the SR is obviously LTE and the camera, but on the other hand I hate the 800x480 res and sound quality of both ear speaker and loud speaker is sub-par. Plus, no notification light is killing me, reminds of my days with an iPhone. Why does Samsung omit this feature is beyond me.
If you can live w/ less internal memory, than the LG Nitro HD LTE might be good.
But the dev suport on the lg will be a gamble

The skyrocket is a really good device, you might as well keep it. Your other option on ATT is the vivid which I have and is a great device. But don't worry, with this CarrierIQ thing going on right now (which seems to be ATT only and not Google, Samsung or HTC) you ptobably should be able to opt out the contract at any time since you didn't sign up for that crap...
Sent from my HTC Vivid via Tapatalk
Ciq isnt just att.....the samsung epic is the first phone i believe to be discoverd with it thats sprint, and that was discoverd almost a year ago. But i am suprised no one has tried to see if they could get out of there contract yet due to it... i believe it was k0nane who discoverd it on the epic
Then it looks like the SR is the best choice for the next 6 months or so. Honestly, I haven't even looked at new phones that were coming out for AT&T. The LG phone doesn't look appealing as there is only 4gb on board which is crazy for a smartphone these days.
Thanks for the info!!

This is my concern. The only two gripes I have about my skyrocket are the screen lines and the poor audio...The LG Nitro screen quality may be better resolution, but it is still LCD. I doubt audio is any better than what it was on the thrill. On that note...the thrill has hod absolutely no developmental improvements since I left that device over a month ago.
I have no interest in the Vivid (heavy, washed out screen, bootloader issue) so the Nitro would be my only choice at the moment and I just don't see that happening...4gb internal memory and no development....the SR will prolly be the better choice to tide me over until mid '12
We have another upgrade available next week so we may pick up a nitro to compare side by side.

Where are you seeing this? None of the reviews I've read have mentioned that. One thing that may not be widely understood is that you need to have your account provisioned to get HSPA+ data speeds. The old wap.cingular.com gateway is apparently capped in terms of data speeds. You need the IMEI of a "4G" capable AT&T phone in order to get a 4G data plan and the right code added to your account - AT&T doesn't recognize the IMEI of the GN as 4G capable. My plan is to buy the SGS2 Skyrocket with my upgrade, activate it on the 4G unlimited data plan, then sell it and use the SIM in an unlocked GN once the 32GB HSPA+ GN is available.

I read it in multiple posts here on XDA under the GN section. My line was fine with HSPA+ since I had the Atrix, and they said I wouldn't need a new SIM for the Skyrocket...which I believe since I'm getting 45mbs here in DC.

[Q] Buying new droid (AT&T), can you beat a Galaxy S II LTE?

I currently have an HTC hero I used on AT&T (I think it was a Rogers phone from canada, its the Hero with the funny kink at the bottom).
I've been very happy with it for a few years now, but my folks just got new iphone 4's and I cant stand the "if this "android" thing is so great why is your phone so much slower than mine?" remarks from my father anymore (guess I did a little to good of a job turning him into a techy ) so its time to upgrade
I had not looked at new phones since my Hero was very near top of the line. Base on my extensive reading over the last 2 weeks it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE (aka Skyrocket) is probably a great choice, particularly since I will be moving to the Baltimore / D.C. area soon and it looks like they have LTE service!
1st Question) Can I still simply take the sim card from my Hero and pop it into the Skyrocket and be up and running? I assume the new phones still use the same old sim cards but all the reviews / videos / pictures I've seen didn't mention it specifically and I wanted to be sure, for all I know they could have changed.
2nd Question) Any reason you wouldn't recommend the Skyrocket? Something better out now, or coming out very soon?
Thank you very much for the help, I always appreciate the advice and wealth of information from all the experts here!
*EDIT* FYI I did look into the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note, but its to large for me I think
1) Yes. To my knowledge (not very much ) only iPhones and Nokia's N9 use microSIM cards. Your regular SIM from your Hero will fit fine in your new phone.
2) The Skyrocket is a lovely phone, if you need LTE. There are two similar, somewhat cheaper alternatives available if you're not in an LTE area (i777, i9100). They are both compatible with AT&T 3G service.
If you wait for 'the next best thing' around the corner, you'll never buy anything Manufacturers are certainly pumping devices these days. That said, if you like big phones the Note is coming to AT&T within the next couple of weeks, also packing LTE.
I personally loved the LG Nitro HD for its stunning 720p screen and sleek build, although LGs software is definitely not as polished as Samsungs.
In the end, it all comes down to personal preference If you can, head into your local AT&T shop and get some hands-on time with both. Pick the one which feels better for you. You can make a more informed choice that way
Good luck!

[Resolved] [Q] Which phone should I get?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a T-Mobile phone that is used and costs around $150. I'm looking at these phones:
HTC MyTouch 4G (non-slide)
HTC G2
Motorola Defy
Samsung Vibrant
Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Also, taking into consideration which has ICS and a more active dev community.
Thanks!
EDIT: I'm going for a no-contract $30 prepaid plan, forgot to add that

Go with the vibrant! Great phone. The SGS 4g (T959v) is nice but there is a larger dev community for the original. You won't be disappointed.
Edit: Don't overlook the captivate from at&t. It is easily unlocked with an app and is a great phone, large dev support as well.
What are you looking at shortbus?

Would never buy Motorola, Samsung and so much about nothing at all, so much trouble with him was. So many problems with the flashing, forever's not like it, is not flashing, after the firmware is not loaded, reloaded
My choice of HTC
My wife has the Samsung Galaxy S, but its sometimes crappy with force restarts.

I am leaning towards the Galaxy S because I bought GTA 3 on one of my old phones and it was laggy on that one (it had an adreno 205)
consider the htc one x
with his quadcore processor you're good for a few years
My vote goes for HTC One X too. Tegra 3 is overrated, but too many developers start to consider that as main platform for development.
He wants phones that are affordable guys!!! lol But if I had to I would get a Samsung Galaxy S 4G and get straight talk for $45 Unlimited everything!!!.
Now for high end phones... the GS3 is deffinently the KING!

I live in Washington D.C. I will post some pics up later today for you. Believe me I really looked into it before I bought my captivate. I also have a vibrant. These are really great devices. Let me start out by saying I'm not advocating piracy or any illegal activities but you can get alot of cool new games from 4shared. Hypothetically you could get the apk for these games to try and see how they work on your device before purchasing. Please purchase these games and apps to help support the development and continuation of great apps on the market.

[Q] T-Mobile What phones can I use...

OK, not even sure if this is the right place to post this question or not... But I am switching to T-Mobile (Small Business Plan $49.95 unlimited plan without phones) So I am buying my own phones.. I am trying to figure out what phones I can get that will do there 4G network, I think the network is HSPA+
I have been looking on eBay for phones, found a bunch of unlocked phones from over seas, just not sure as far as what ones will do the 4G, they list 2G and 3G and the different bands but have 4G in the title...
I am tired of big phones, I have the HTC Evo no, I want to go back to one the size of my old HTC Inc....
I wish there where career specific forums on here. Thanks for any help!!
Kyle
Most unlocked phones from overseas will not get AWS bands which t-mobile uses. The Galaxy Nexus will get 4G..but for the size you are looking for, I would go with an HTC Amaze. Make sure it is the T-mobile version.

If you want a high quality decently specced phone, you aren't going to be able to find anything smaller than the amaze...
The Blaze seams pretty good as far as speeds go. The Amaze feels alot better because it is heaver... I guess worst case I could just go with the Blaze.. To bad I couldn't get one of those Casio G Shock phones to work 4G, that thing looks indestructible!!
I decided to go with the Samsung Exhibit ll, it looks about the same size as my old HTC inc
