USB-OTG - Cannot write to usb flash drive - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
I have tried a USB Flash drive on my Moto G, and I am able to read all files fine on the device, however I can't write anything to the usb flash drive. I have rooted and tried Stickmount, but this isn't working still. Just wondering if anyone else here has any ideas or success? Thanks in advance!

*Edit - It seems to be working now! See post 5. Very strange!

Others have the same problem, not me, I can write, read here:

Usb Stick has to be formated in FAT32 and not NTFS. This is maybe your problem.

Hi, thanks for the replies! I am formatted in fat32, and I'm using one of those small Meenova microSd card readers. Shaftenberg, what size if your microsd, and how is it formatted? I am using an 8gb one, but still have no luck.

OK this is weird...after fiddling around with it, I've managed to get it working! Basically I formatted the drive to exfat, tried it with stick mount, didn't work. I then killed all the stick mount processes, and manually deleted the 'usbStorage' directory. Reformatted the microSD to FAT32 on my computer, then I tried it again. Stickmount automatically mounted the microSD, and this time, I was able to write to it! Don't know why its decided to work, but very happy that it does. I tested copying files across, now downloading a linux torrent directly to it, and its working great.

Glad you got it working
I had a 4GB USB stick with fat32.

[Q] "Can't mount sdcard" error in CWM

I've seen this error elsewhere, but no solution. I'm running PRIME 1.4, want to upgrade to 1.6.
- I used the nvflash method. I re-did this, obviously that didn't work.
- I tried formatting the SD card via Windows and via CWM (which didn't work, because it couldn't mount it...duh). Used the default FAT32 settings to format. For others, this seemed to be the fix.
- I CAN read the SD card on the tablet once booted up regularly. I can also mount the storage on my PC.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
So I tried a different sdcard (8GB, if it matters). No issues. No idea why this worked, so I guess the mystery is unsolved.

Probably partition of your sdcard. Try reformatting it to another format like NTFS or something?

In fact, CWM can't real actual SDcard (dock slot), it read the MicroSD only (the tablet slot)
Try putting the zip at the root of the MicroSD, and launch CWM
For me it´s doing the same - can´t mount SD card. I have microSD card that I have formated into FAT/FAT32/NTFS - nothing worked. I try to put it into SD card adapter and nothing too...
Can someone tell us please, where is the problem??? I have root, flashed cwm 3.0.2.8, standart ROM...

MicroSD needs to be formated into FAT32 and only this format
If you read the post above yours, you would have also seen that the SDcard slot on the dock DOES NOT WORK in CWM

Yes, did this. I wasn't messing around with the dock, just the microSD in the tablet itself. And yes, the .zip was in the root directory--though it's not like I was able to get this far. I was not even able to see the root directory, at all.

Plug it in while android is running, and check if the MicroSD is seen in /removable/MicroSD
If, yes, that's pretty weird. If not, try another MicroSD
I had the mounting issue as well. But I formatted my micro SD card with SD Formatter (I am not allowed to post URL as a new user ), then it can be mounted.
myode is right, use SD Formatter 3.0 will fix your problem.
It use low-level format, where windows format don't.
I came across (i can't remember where exactly) some people swear that by formatting the microsd card in a android phone, the card no longer exhibit abnormal behaviour in the tf101.

NTFS format hard drive for stock rom?

What size ntfs do I need to format the hard drive in so the stock rom will read it? I'm using revolver so I don't know. Just confirmed 2 people not being able to read their hard drive because they're on stock. I'll have to reformat.
don't format as NTFS because Android won't read/write to it. Use vFAT/FAT32 - it may be worth giving ExFAT a go, but it probably won't work.
I have a 750 GB USB hard drive formatted as NTFS, and the TF can read and write
it with no problems when connected to a USB port on the keyboard dock or on the
tablet, using the Asus USB adapter.
I'm rooted, but using the stock ROMs on HC 3.2.1.
Works here, too - 500 GB Transcend External HDD formatted as NTFS.
Stock 3.2.1, no root.

You sure? NTFS what allocation size? I already got 2 people telling me the drive wouldn't work on their stock. When I plug it into mine, it works instantly.
Anyway, I'm formatting it in fat32 and sending it back to them.
Heck, I'll nvflash back to stock non-rooted to test these out myself.

Of course I'm sure, I have 2 6GB files on them, which cannot be achieved in FAT32. Also the drive works on my friends Iconia A500. And the last time when I formatted a HDD into FAT32 was when I was using Windows ME
BTW, Allocation size 4096 Bytes.
I move my NTFS-formatted USB drive between my Windows XP PC and the Transformer (rooted/stock ROM/HC 3.2.1) all the time.
Need NTFS module
Hi
I have rooted TF(Revolver+Clemsyn). NTFS do work fine though I had to copy over NTFS.ko manually.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18023335#post18023335
Well. Colour me both surprised and impressed then!
I just got a confirmation from someone. His stock rom fully updated can only read fat32.
How come some of you with stock can read ntfs? I don't get it.
Latest 3.2.1 Stock WW - and it was never a problem. My External HDD is a one plug USB drive tho, so no need for extra power source. Looks like you're screwed
I downloaded an app called Drive Mount and that enabled NTFS for me, it might work natively now but I haven't uninstalled to find out so try that our - 'Drive Mount' on the Android market.
EDIT: I should specify that I can use both AC powered external hard drives and USB powered hard drives on my TF.

64GB micro sdxc "damaged", unable to format

So I've been looking around for help on this across various sites and I've had no luck fixing my problem.
I'm running the most recent CM10 nightlies, which I read might influence which formats the phone can read, and even after I formatted the card to FAT32 via the gui app and easeUS partition editor my phone still says my card is damaged. When I try to format it it just says "unmounting card" with the spinning circle and sits there, never unmounting and formatting like it wants to. I tried to mount/unmount and format in CWM, no dice. This card is brand new out of the package today so there's been no previous use or problems.
Am I just going to be unable to use this card while running CM10, would I have to go back to a TW ROM or stock to make it read correctly? It will show up on my computer when I plug it in and files transfer to it fine so I figure it's a problem on the phone's side. My old 16gb card from my DX works fine and that's what I'll use in the meantime but the space is dangerously low, hence why I jumped on this 64gb card when it was an Amazon deal.
If anyone has some insight or experience with this I'd really appreciate it, I'm guessing it's a problem with CM10 or I missed some tiny step somewhere but I've tried a lot and had no success.

What exactly is the partition editor you used, and why? The GUI program to format it to fat32 is sufficient...
I would guess either it's the card(what brand btw?) or the partition editor.

It's the "SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-064G-U46A", I've noticed a lot of GS3 owners have been buying something similar or the same.
I used EaseUS Partition Master as well as the fat32 gui program that's been circulating, sounds like you know the one, and while the format was successful the phone still sees the card as damaged and won't completely unmount the card when I try to format it like it says.

Did you use the sd adapter to plug into the computer or you did it while it was inserted in the phone already? I did the latter, idk if buying an sd slot to usb would change anything.
I am having the same problem. I thought I had a bad card, so I sent it back. Now I am searching for a solution as well. I will give this a try later tonight.

Ah ok, looks like I'll have to buy an sd-usb plugin then.
Had the same issue on two different cards and eventually they said that they were an unsupported raw format. Called sandisk and they said there are a lot of issues with the 64gb class 10 cards and the SGSIII. I am on my third one. This one has been working almost perfectly. I often get a unmounting remounting issue with the card, but I am not blaming the card yet as ever since I flashed the cracked aboot I have been having odd issues. I am going to put my phone back to stock and start over here today or tomorrow.

I fixed it
I bought a multi-SD plug-in with USB, slid my card in there, ran the gui on the card, put the card back in my phone and it worked fine, the phone recognizes it. For whatever reason the card didn't want to format while it was in the phone despite my manipulations, so plugging the SD into the computer is crucial I think.
Thanks for the support guys.
I have done everything described here, and still have what the OP says. Card is not recognized, like its not even plugged in to the phone, is formatted as FAT32 and works in windows.

Well, I literally fought this for 3 hours, and finally I just deleted the entire partition and formatted the card in the stock ROM. Then I pulled the card and formatted with EaseUS partitioner as FAT32 and put it back in and it worked. Then I flashed back to CM10 and it still works.
How frustrating this is....

[Q] SD Card Not Writeable?

It seems that my SD card is not writable when inserted. Is this true? I tried to create a new folder on it with root explorer (I am not rooted though) and it said that my device needs to be rooted in order to accomplish that task.
Any ideas?
Jonn
Did you try something like es file explorer? I would try that.
That didn't work either. It says "operation failed".
I actually noticed that it wasn't working playing act raiser and it wasn't saving my position. Moving the ROM to internal storage worked. I then tried to create a folder.

Huh. Just tried a different SD card and that one worked. Weird.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I spoke too soon. After removing the sdcard that worked and putting it back in, it no longer is writeable.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
It works again if I pull the card out, restart the shield and put the card back in. Perhaps something up with the mounting process?
It appears that once a card is mounted, if it is removed and re-inserted, it remounts as read only.
Jonn

It looks like sdcard mounting is messed up. I can't get any of the sdcards i have tried to mount.
Did you go into settings and actually click unmount before removing the SD Card? Many linux systems (android is linux) will mount devices which werent safely removed in read only mode for some bizarre reason.
I tried that as well. It still doesn't work.

when you go to storage under settings, under sd card does it show total space for card. if not maybe you have to format it to NTFS first. thats what I had to do with my new card. also said to do so on shield guide

Yes, I formatted it to NTFS before I inserted it. It shows the total space and space available, it just doesn't allow anything to be written to it. I can take it out and put it in a PC and it works correctly. I also have another SD card that I tried and it worked for a few minutes, but I haven't been able to get it to keep working.

The only memory card I have gotten working (about 1 minute ago) is 512MB and formatted fat32
The card i want to us is a 16gb microsdhc formatted fat32 when this memory card is in my shield it knows it has a memory card but says it has no partitions on it.
I am running testdisk on the sd card and it found 9 partitoins. I will try and clean that up.
To be honest, I've never tried SD card support on the device. So I can't say one way or another. But I'll be looking at it soon enough since I got my first build of CWM for SHIELD waiting for me to debug in the other room once the kids go to bed.
I just tried two different 8GB class 10 transcend cards, an 8GB class 2 generic card and a 256mb sandisk card. I put each card in and copied a file from internal storage to it. Then I removed each of the cards without unmounting and put them back in and proceeded to copy a file to the card again. Every time it worked successfully. I do not even know what format they are in and didn't format them before testing. And, maybe the issue didn't show up because I didn't give it enough time. I am not sure.
Also, I know this is probably a really dumb question but the micro sd slot is spring loaded. You are pushing it in until you hear a good solid click right?
issues
Having issues of my own.
Bought a 64gb sandisk SDXC card for shield. It worked 100% fine in my SGS3 formated for exFat. But not in the shield...
It seems to work somewhat when formated for NTFS. But the file path is really messed up and 1/2 my apps cant see the SD card because of this. It something like (root/storage/sdcard1/....)
2 apps that are basically usless right now due to this are Power amp & FPse.
Android doesn't normally support either exFat or NTFS. The shield may include support for them but if I had a shield I would steer clear anyway and go with what android definitely trusts in FAT32.
Hopefully NVidia will do a firmware update to sort these problems though

[Q] saving to micro SD card

I have been having some issues when saving music to my micro SD. I am running the latest version of katkiss(and love it). I have the files on my internal SD card, then try to move them to my external SD card using root browser, of file manager HD. It looks as though the files move, but when I unmount the card, and remount, or just reboot the tablet, the files are no longer there. Maybe I am doing something wrong, just looking for some good advice.
Thanks everyone for making this tf101 awesome again!!
I would try manually from adb or console to see if you get any errors which file managers can silently suppress.
I don't have the device with me right now so I can't give you the exact path to use, but something like:
cp -a /sdcard/Music/file-or-directory* /mnt/storage/2
the paths are wrong of course, I really can't remember where they're mounted. I'll update the post when I get home unless someone can give the proper paths before then. Using cp will tell you if there's errors.
I would also try to copy files to the card on a computer, to see if you can replicate the problem there. It could just be a dying card or a messed up filesystem on it.

Thanks for the reply. I may be doing something wrong i don't know. The card is brand new, and i did the FAT32 long format. The same thing happens to me when i use a USB adapter in the main connector and try to move music from my tablet to a USB drive. It looks like it moves, but as soon as I unmount, and re-mount, no files are there. I am formatting my SD and USB drives on a windows 8 laptop. I have read where some people have luck formatting NTFS, but my laptop won't even let me format my USB drive that way.
I appreciate your effort. I am sure we can get this resolved some how. Just gotta keep messin' with it.

Is it the dock sdcard or the tablet's?
The exact command to test a copy would be (for the tablet's external sdcard):
cp -av /storage/sdcard0/file.name /storage/sdcard1/
I'm running 021 and this worked for me. The command should return something like:
/storage/sdcard0/file.name -> /storage/sdcard1/file.name
and get you back to a shell if it works. Otherwise paste the message it gives you.
If the devices work elsewhere and you're sure it's the tablet, try wiping cache and dalvik... I've seen it cause weirder issues. You could also try to do a full backup in recovery and then do a full wipe, and reflash katkiss. If it works you know it's something with the old rom, and if it doesn't you can restore the backup.

I have moved files from the internal SD (photographs actually as there was no option to save them anywhere else only the internal SD) to the micro SD card using the X-plore app and the ES file manager app with no problems. I did however learn that both sd cards e.g. the internal and external are just called sd card and the internal sd card is shown under Device and under Storage so it is possible to cut and paste from the Internal sd card back into the Internal sd card.
I am assuming you are referring to the sd card on the tablet and not the sd card in the dock.
