Here we have what Google owned Motorola has created with Project Ara. A concept to bring the flexibility and open source that Google's android brought to software to the hardware side. A modular phone that you can customize. Why buy a new phone when you can just upgrade the one you have?
Build it to your liking, take it apart and build it better! And there even bring the ability use your 3D printer to customize it (I know you all have a 3D printer by now.... Right?)
Then we have the Build your own phone plan by Zact.
Currently on the sprint network, (I hope they expend or someone picks up on this and moves to something with a bit more... SERVICE.) You can pick how many minutes, text messages, and Mb of data you have or don't have, each month. If your realize that you need more minutes, text, or Mb, you just click a button and add them. If you have extra they roll over. How can it get any better? Oh, you have kids? You can set times, and limits on EVERYTHING! or don't. Your choice, and that's what makes it AMAZING.
All this mixed in with Android, makes it the perfect phone to build and create anything you can imagine in a phone. Unfortunately, I don't see Zact adding this phone to its list of phones for sale anytime soon, and currently Zact has "custom software" that means you can only buy there phones for there plans, and you can't install custom roms or anything that might cause the software to stop working because it would leave you left with a brick, and they do not have insurance. But... where there is android, there are devs and devs can do anything with time and support.
So, the future of cell phones is looking promising. If there are enough people interested in this stuff, support the developers. Comment on the xda forums and let them know that you want them to support Zact phones. Lets get the ball rolling on this.
I am starting my Zact plan for Christmas, and I will be flashing my prl's to roam because as of now, Zact roaming is free and roaming services at my house is better then sprint service.
The future looks promising! Let me know what you guys think!

future
nice phone...

Don't forget to help support project Ara on their dScout page!:good:

I got my phones a few days ago, it only took 2 weeks... I started it up, ran through the setup, wasnt thinking but aloud the OTA to run. I ran cf auto root, noticed I still didnt have su so I installed superuser from the appstore and checked root with root checker. Nothing. Then I remembered that I installed the OTA to 4.3 but forgot about Knox because I had not had to deal with it prior. I did just about everything I could think of. I also found that trying to retrieve your msl/spc is a lot harder. I am unable to get into the qualcomm usb menu because it asked for the msl, Most hidden menus are asking for msl. I attempted to install twrp but it says there is no recover found for my device. I cant connect it to dfs or cdma workshop. adb sees it, but I dont know much about adb so I want able to do much with it. I was however able to copy the ZACT mobile apk from the phone and install it to another phone. It is unstable and FC alot. My other phone sees it as a launcer like touchwiz or nova. Thought this would be a good idea to see what the apk itself controls on another phone. I am not a developer. I am computer savy and have been playing with flashing for a long time. If anyone is interested in teaching me a little, I would like make a backup of the rom. Is there a way to pull the full rom with pre-installed apks, I can factory rest back to start and just see whats available. I'd like to attempt to flash it to my old s3 make a clone kinda. So i can test an play with one without damaging my daily phone. Any thoughts or ideas on what to test let me know.

Nice

Just to set the record straight...in no way did Motorola create this idea. This was a concept created by Dave Hakkens. His concept was called Phonebloks. Motorola did some sort of deal to license the concept or something. Just don't go around saying someone created something when they didn't...its like saying Apple made the smartphone.

JF preps CRC1-based build & tips on circumventing OTA for JF US/EU users

CRC1 patch is hitting the interwebs. Notable Android hacker JesusFreke issued the following update on his blog for those running JF1.51 US/EU builds:
http://jf.andblogs.net/ said:
OTAs in JFv1.51
July 19, 2009 If you are on the US or EU versions of JFv1.51, you’ll likely get an OTA update notification soon, if you haven’t already. I had accidentally left in the otacerts.zip file, which allows OTAs to be downloaded and verified.
For now, there are a few possible work arounds.
1. delete the otacerts.zip file manually. The file is at /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip But keep in mind if you use this method your phone will continuously re-down the OTA and try to verify it, which is bad on your bandwidth usage and your battery life
2. Replace /system/build.prop on your phone with the one from the ADP1 version of JFv1.51
3. chmod 000 the OTA file in /cache (unconfirmed solution, but is likely to work)
Or you can ignore the popups for now, and wait for my new release based on the new update (CRC1). I promise to “disable” the OTA mechanisms in a better way than simply deleting otacerts.zip

In the meantime, even if you accidentally hit “accept” on the popup, it won’t be able to install the update when it gets into recovery, so you aren’t at risk of losing root access.

Why do you feel bad? You're not betraying anyone as you're not obligated to just one dev. I appreciate all the devs out there, equally.
all in the family
no need to feel bad; CyanogenMod is a DF derivative
I wonder if he will make it support ext3

I know I shouldn't, but that's just the type of person I am. When I like something I become loyal to it weither it be a certian Rom or dev, or just something in general I guess. I call it loyalty some people call it being close minded

This kind of mentality can breed what is affectionately called "fanboyism".
Can breed, doesn't have to breed. Like I stay loyal to JF because I'm not a fan of roms that contain many ported apps. It's mostly bloat to me, as I don't need to take advantage of it all.
Cyanogen's roms would be interesting to give a try to sometime down the road. But I'm happy on my JF ADP build, it's close enough to stock (without the bloatware the US builds add in) to be compatible and runs light enough to work snappily.
"This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone," Miller told Forbes. "Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this."
The iPhone SMS bug is just one of a series that the researchers plan to reveal in their talk. They say they've also found a similar texting bug in Windows Mobile that allows complete remote control of Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people )-based devices. Another pair of SMS bugs in the iPhone and Google's ( GOOG - news - people ) Android phones would purportedly allow a hacker to knock a phone off its wireless network for about 10 seconds with a series of text messages. The trick could be repeated again and again to keep the user offline, Miller says. Though Google has patched the Android flaw, this second iPhone bug also remains unpatched, he adds.
The new round of bugs aren't the first that Miller has dug up in the iPhone's code. In 2007, he became the first to remotely hijack the iPhone using a flaw in its browser. But while that vulnerability gave the attacker a similar power over the phone's functions, it required tricking the user into visiting an infected Web site to invisibly download a piece of malicious software. When Miller alerted Apple in July of that year, the company patched the vulnerability before Miller publicized the bug at the Black Hat conference the following month. ("See: Hacking the iPhone.")

yeah wish he would give us an update, if he's not going to release anything then i'd like to know so i can think about changing to someone else firmware.

New Approach (end user)

In short!
Build a G1 rom without so many stock applications!!! This will defiitely cause a snappier feel to functionality.
(I once used a rom with 37 stock apps, the g1 can only handle about 40 unrooted! ridiculous!)
I've had a G1 since the beginning, and as things have progressed along no one has really noted how much we've crammed into the device with each OS update, much like bloatware.
I've recently been running the latest up to date roms I can find, and they don't run up to par, there is a lot of lag and waiting. This isn't to say all roms or slow or even any at all, just my experience and I hope with that we can build a 2.2 rom without added applications.
Maybe make two roms, a bare bones rom and a full one.
I don't need: launcher pro
an extra email client
3d gallery
music
news and weather
talk
voice dialer / search.
There are better alternatives on the market, and the voice search is horrible.
All Android phones will eventually slow down with OS updates, lets not cram the g1 with new services found on better phones. (bluetooth 2.0)
I think it's great progress I do, but I think the majority of g1 users would be grateful without them/ a pick between barebones and full roms.
I've deleted most of the apps mentioned above, but without the extra email app my gmail wont sync, and all sorts of quirky things.
The g1 isn't slow, it was fast and snappy with the firmware version it came out on, let's keep stock apps to a minimum!
Tried to keep this short, sorry.
You know, you can easily edit any of the roms, by hand, or using dsixda's kitchen
Or if that sounds too geeky, you can always install root explorer and delete the desired apk files from /system/app. it works for me. i remove the onscreen keyboard (extra 4mb of ram), voice search, voice dialer, bluetooth (which i rarely use, so i dont need it there), extra mail client,
soooo..
What your saying is because you dont want to do it yourself and you are the only one who uses these roms, the developers should do more work just for you.
You do understand how easy it is for you to delete what you dont want from a rom right?
Let's refer to the OP and see what is now bolded.
I've used Root Explorer to delete apps (and still do) but it never is as sound as I'd like.
My Gmail won't sync and will crash after I delete the extra email.apk,
my contacts will crash when trying to join with FB small here and there things.
I'm all about being "geeky" with my phone, I'm a little bothered anyone would think I wasn't considering I've been using this device since the beginning with ADB and all that noise.
It was a suggestion for less technical users to not have the hassle. I read Cyan the other day saying how these devices are still fun to hack and they just keep adding to it not regarding (it seems) if it will be snappy and functional for every day use.
and thank you fonix232 I'll look into it
dude if you dont want all the "bloat-ware", you should try a plain phone like this, i use one my self

and on a almost serious note, that reminds me of that skinny mp3 lookin' phone Verizon put out like 2 years ago that slid out like a blade haha
Simply install an 3rd party app like android commander and remove what you desire from /system/app. Going to request a close/move on this, as there isn't too much development going on here+already slightly off topic.
EDIT: Also remember barebone roms, about 2 or so were released. The reason why you don't see more as it didn't really impact the G1 that much. Let's face it, we're lacking ram mainly and os support.

I uploaded a few stripped roms in the past, but nothing recently. This was mostly when I was repacking WG's kernel into various different roms. Now with AnyKernel Updater (and pershoot, dumfuq, exterry, etc) constantly building kernels, there's little need.
It really comes down to the fact that there isn't the perfect rom for everyone. It's easier for me to strip what I don't want out, throw some extra scripts here and there, and testsign the zip.

Request to develop basic app: Sobriety/Clean-time counter

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I wondered if there were any developers out there up for creating an app for android. What I am on about is a "Sobriety Counter" type app. The iphone has one it's called "Friends of Bill"
It is basically just a counter, you would type in a date and time and it continues counting from that date.
Would be great to get on on my android phone! and I'm sure loads of other people would be interested in this, as I see a lot of people in na/aa meetings who have the iphone one.
Cheers!
Oli
I might be able to make something after Im done with my next app
I was about to put one together, but then I did a search for Android apps and found this: hxxp://listandroidapps.com/2010/09/06/android-apps/lifestyle-android-apps/12-steps-aa-companion-android-app/
Doesn't it do what you need?
Do you need something THAT specific? There's a Day and Time app that does this sort of thing too..
http://www.appbrain.com/app/daysanddate/com.deskangel.DaysAndDate
You put in a date and can save it and you can see time since/time to.. And it's a great date calculator on the fly, ie: What's the date 50 days from now, etc.
Hi, thanks for the replies. That AA app looks great, but doesnt have a counter on it, and the Daysanddate too, ive installed it, very useful, but what I am talking about is like a constant running counter. This is a screenshot of the iphone one:
hxxp://a1.phobos.apple.com/us/r1000/045/Purple/57/63/f6/mzl.fdnllajk.320x480-75.jpg
Any counter like this would be great, but would be cool if it could say like "This is your clean time: "
Thanks a lot guys!
Oli
Or does anyone know an app that already does just a basic counter. Set a date/time and it continues counting.
First attempt:
It displays a counter and you can reset it.
The sponsor stuff does not work yet, and it's butt-ugly because it's a proof of concept.
Get it from this page (second link): http://nexus.zteo.com/projects/beta/
Thanks so much man!!
Really like the way you've added the sponsor part into it. That is such a great idea. I would definately use that option.
Need to be able to enter date and time from when first got sober, then the counter continuously counting from then. So when you open the app it will say the amount of sober years/months/weeks/days/hours/mins/secs from the original Date/Time entered. Anyway of making the counter visually carry on counting when it's open too?
The oops button you included would be good too! I wont ever have to use it though (fingers crossed!)
Amazing for first attempt man. This really could become something great! I know it will be popular in the recovery community, I know a lot of friends who will use this.
I uploaded a new version.
It looks a bit better and the "Call sponsor" feature should work.
Still not happy with the overall look, especially the layout of the buttons. There is no sense of which ones are more important.
Also: the counter, albeit counting ok, actually can display weird stuff. Hrm.
Cool! Will install it when I get home.
The most important thing is to able to manually enter a time and date, then the counter will continuously count from that time and date. E.g for me I will want to enter 10am 07/07/10, and when the app is open it will display the elapsed time since then.
Is it possible to make the counter carry on counting when the app is open too?
Thanks a lot for this!
OK. Listened, added, skinned.
Please re-download it, have a look at the help, let me know.
Cheers!
Love it!!!!
Looks awesome man! Really really grateful for this!! This is exactly like I was describing! Really this is great though man! Impressed. Now I have the icon on my homescreen it is the quickest way to actually call my sponsor 2 clicks, instead of going to contacts, etc!
Couple of things, I really like the "Token" option, is it possible to select image from gallery as well as take picture?
Also could you put it as "You have been clean and sober for:"
Would it be OK to send the link to this thread to some of my friends online who would be interested in this and could help test it out?
I will add the picture gallery at some point, for sure.
And I will change the text too.
Sure, tell your friends about it; it's free and I will soon upload it to the android market.
I can put it on the market for ya if you want so it can receive updates and such. Also would benefit other users. PM me if you want!
Captainkrtek, thanks for your offer. I already have a market account though so it took me only a few moments to upload it (90% of that spent lamenting Google's new requirement for a 512x512 "icon"!)
For anyone interested, the latest version is now available on the market. Look for "Sobriety counter."
This should be on the newsfeed! Awesome app!
Thanks
So, here is the QR code for the app:

Widgets
Coming very soon (need to run regression testing and that's it): Widgets.
As discreet -- or not -- as you want them to be. I'm thinking three different widgets:
Hi, I have found a slight bug, thought I would report it. If you open the App and then exit it just using the back button, then when you open the app again the time hasn't continued counting. It has paused during the time when the app was closed (running in the background). The only way to sort it out at the moment is to use Taskiller, then when you open it again it is working normally. So if you could possibly fix it so that it carries on counting when the app is closed and running in the background.
Widgets sound great, again a great development!
I have shown a few people this app now and spreading the word, a lot of people want it on their phones. My friend has actually decided to upgrade her phone to an android phone simply so she can have this app!! Cleantime is a very important thing to people in recovery, so this app is brilliant!
Good catch.
I just updated the market app. with a fix for this.

Live Watches (SE LiveView)

EDIT, 05/15/11:
Note: You will only care about this app. if you own a Sony Ericsson LiveWatch device!

I am going to talk about a plug-in I wrote for the Sony Ericsson LiveView.
However, if you guys wish to discuss development for that device or how to make it work better, this is also welcome because it is both intriguing and under-represented (and a bit maddening at times)
Anyway, I was flabbergasted when I realized that there isn't any straightforward "watch" plug-in for the LiveView so in a couple hours I figured out how to use the SDK and created one.
I am not releasing it yet and I will only make it available it there is interest for it and I get the appropriate permissions from the people whose art I have used for this proof of concept app.
By the way, more face and hands art would be welcome!
A few (terrible) screenshots:
My LiveView was sent from the website i ordered it from, today=) I would really such an addon=)
And i can make you some artwork if i get something to work with=)
Oh, that's good.
I hope it works well for you. The device losing its pairing can be quite aggravating.
On the other hand it is a breeze to develop for; actually simpler than writing a home screen widget.
A friend of mine got it last week and said that he had lost his pairing once since he got it set up.
To me no development is a breeze i know squat about programing
But as said i would love to make you some graphics you could use so that you can release this=)
^^
I just received a sms from my post office that my LiveView had arrived
and here are a little graphic preview of some artwork you might use(?) It shows the whole thing, background, minute hand and hour hand=)
I really think you should release this addon
Ha! I like it a lot, in fact.
Can you post it as three files as described at http://www.voilaweb.com/lv_faq#createtheme?
Oh, and I updated the OP with a link to the beta apk
Will do, Just have to make some minor changes as the big and short hand are the same. and also added some indicators on the clock face.
Edit: Also, will you support this addon? i mean like bugs and stuff?
I guess, I will have to, yes
So, anyone go any feedback for me?
hey man.
i just installed your app from market and it's looking great.
i guess you can make a clock with digits or maybe a digital one.
it still disconnects but at least i have a watch
one other thing maybe you can ad an always on screen option
MrJay, first off, thanks for your feedback
The "always on" option would be nice but I invite you to think about this some more...say until your device dies on you because its damn battery is already too weak for the plug-in's current version
EDIT: OK I really don't want to sound negative. The device is really nice. I just wish it had better connectivity and battery life.
In fact, the tricks I read on how to force it to reconnect using AutomateIt, etc., end up sucking battery life like crazy.
The only thing i have to say about this addon, is that its a bit slow to update when i wake the screen. might take a sec before the clock shows the correct time.
Other than that, i love it
Thanks Marius.
Yes, I know about the 1 sec. delay it's due to sending as few updates to the device as possible, to improve battery life.
But maybe I could slightly alter this behavior for a "wake up" event.
BTW, I hope you guys are using the version from the market! It's free, but more likely to get updates than the one on my blog.

anyway keep up the good job. it's a nice to have application.
I ordered one of these devices today after seeing this post, fantastic plugin! this is perfect for when I'm at work, seeing as I work outside and don't have time to check my phone for any updates, much less the time. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Where can I order this I'm interested I live in California if that makes a difference
Well, Spitfire, so do I. I ordered from these guys: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004E2V4NM and it was shipped from Florida.
Have you updated this with any new themes?
Ive been away over the easter and haven checked in here for about 2 weeks. also i've been flashing a lot of ROMs lately so havent gotten to hook up my liveview yet. Will look in to it today th0=)

Awesome design. I fear that the LiveView's limited resolution will not be able to display something this complex, though. Not even something as good-looking as a TikTok

[Q] Boost Mobile - Samsung Galaxy Prevail Rom Developmant

Was just wondering if anyone is excited as I am about this phone and if any roms could/will be developed for this model. I know Boost Mobile isn't a major carrier so development may get pushed to the wayside, but just thought I'd ask.
Thanks for any inquiries or info.
Now that the Boost Samsung Prevail has been actually released, I'm curious too as to whether this will be embraced by the community. At $180, along with inexpensive plans, I'd think this Prevail would be the equivalent to what the Nook Color is for tablets.
I too would love to see some action with this phone. As previously stated, being on an unlimited Boost plan at $50/month with shrinkage, I think this is the phone to explode in the Boost market. I can see many people getting this phone, such as myself within the next week, and would love to see something like CM7 available for it.
If this phone were rooted, and CM7 then made available I would pick up this phone in a heartbeat. I hope the devs pick up on it.
I am ready to test
I have been playing with cooked ROMs for year.
I am ready to help testing if any chef is interested.
There was just a custom rom beta released last night.
Several users are using it and have so far reported no problems.
Good stuff is soon to come

If someone had the stock rom on their device, can they back it up and post it so i can download the file? I would prefer the rom before the update.

dont mind the blue tint, shootme has some issues with yalls phone
Alright lets get to the nitty gritty of it all, this is the thread where all 0.x-1.x versions will be released, as it stands right now this is nothing more then just a glorified stock, but its better then that . deodexing the rom allows for easier themeing so i want to see some creative **** start to flow in.. yall dont want me making themes... anyways down to the goods
I want to apologize to anyone that was affected by version 0.5, i want to say thanks for teh support ive received during these past few days. as you can see ive decided to continue on doing what i can for yall. on that note it has been brought to my attention that i should include a disclaimer:
This is a product designed outside of samsung, i do not have the resources to make sure it is "bug-proof" (apparently they dont either.. but thats another story). as such by installing this software YOU accept responsibility for your actions. if anything does happen i will try my best to assist you, but i cant promise anything. as such i try my very hardest to make sure things work just great before they ever get put out in the public

What did you use for a custom recovery? I have root access on my prevail.... but now what =)
I went ahead and installed this on my phone despite not having recovery or a stock image if things go south =/ it worked just fine tho. The only issues I have noticed is the browser does not render when I tilt my phone, it does not expand it. Also on some webpages the buttons for submitting do not appear. But otherwise NICE job! Appreciate the rom and any future ones!
versions 0.8.5 is out btw, sorry i dont post on here often since xda doesnt like prepaid carriers
has anyone noticed yet that you are not able to get into the service mode to change the msl???
i think there s some apk's missing for it to work
would it be possible to put them back in so the phone can be reconfigured?
How is there no stock ROM yet?!
I have been using the v.9 loaded version of this ROM on my Prevail and everything seems to be running fine. I use the 3G speed tweek and it all is pretty good for me. Shabby Penguin has done a splendid job for this little device and I look forward to some further developement with this phone.. Like in the first part of this thread someone had mentioned how nice this little phone is with the shrinkage plan, etc. good buy for someone on a smaller budget that wants an affordable smartphone with the capabilities of being rooted and customized. Great work Mr. Penguin!
ps. PM me for the speed tweeking link if you need it since this one of my first posts on here I can't refer links until I am a little more talkative, so it seems.
Shabby Mod
Well I installed this mod and things went south...really south. Been trying to flash it with the stock rom except it's NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. Can someone lend a helping hand?
look up Odin Recovery ED13 will bring you back to stock
Does anyone know if the AAA password really is unique for each phone and if I'm totally screwed by not having it? I can't for the life of me get 3g on my phone now and I have a feeling the AAA password is involved. Google doesn't help too much, some say to call the provider and ask for it, others say it's unique to each phone and you're screwed if you lose it. In any case, I tried asking Boost Mobile for it and they pretty much had no idea what I was talking about.
I feel like shooting myself, I'm on my way to my third Prevail in two weeks.
How to root Samsung Prevail
I am still trying to find out how to install the root. Would you mind doing some baby steps with me? The root looks good and I would like to try it.
