Glass Screen Protector or No...? - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

Hey guys, so I have never used a glass screen protector before, I have always used Ghost Armor's screen protector which is almost like a rubberized material. Anyways...I was looking at the Spigen nano glass screen protector but I am having a difficult time justifying spending $35, but not sure if I trust the knock-off ones either. Keep in mind my phone is ALWAYS in either my Otterbox Defender case, Otterbox Commuter Case, or UAG Maverick case. I guess my question is...is it worth getting one of these glass screen protectors if I am always using the above cases??

Yes it is worth it. I myself had zagg invisible shields for years. Similiar to ghost armour. I'm pretty happy with tempered glass screen protector. Here is a link that will help on where to buy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457815

No it's not. Im the same way. Always having cases with great proection. The glass screen protector is ideal for someone not using a case. Or a very thin case. I have a body glove balastic wich has great protection and now my temperedglass screen protector. And I love it.

Well I will get the Spigen one when I have an extra $35 to spend I guess lol

I can share my experience with glass protectors.
Two months ago, I dropped my phone during a phone conversation at the height of 1.7-1.8 meters. It fell on rough cement ground, and I had no case on, so I naturally feared what I might see when I went to pick up my new galaxy s4.
All four corners of my bezel/frame were severely dented and scratched.
The glass protector was shattered to pieces. But to my surprise, my screen was in perfect condition. Upon inspection, found that adhesive between protector and galaxy s4 screen helped the protector to absorb and redistribute force of the drop, rather than the screen taking the hit.
My investment in glass protector was well justified on this account. Besides, it feels much better than rubbery ghost armor.
Mind you, I have GA on my ipad3, ipad mini, iphone 4 and 5, and galaxy tab.
And the smoothness of glass screen protector is incomparable.
Hope this helps make yours decision.

Do you have to recomend screen p. from ebay? Pack of 3 max 10$

I don't understand why people want to ruin premium latest Gorilla glass generation with screen protector. Even tempered glass ones will never have same features like original Gorilla glass, especially I am talking about clearness, smooth gliding and oleo-phobic covering for easy cleaning. I would recommend quality leather pouch or S-view cover case to protect your screen, also handling phone with care would prolong its lifetime significantly.

Well my point is I use very protective cases...not slim cases...but maybe I will take the plunge on the spigen screen protector. Any of you have any experience with the cheap knock off ones?

You've never been to the beach then.
A grain of sand can scratch the gg3.

I like glass screen protectors.
Gorilla glass can scratch and break.
I have this protector:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/171172132327?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Apparently out of stock. When they have them, they are about $8.00.
There is also, this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321245033521?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I didn't buy it because I like the home button closed in.
I would skip the Spigen glass. Too expensive and crappy customer support.
I had one and since I didn't buy it from an "authorized dealer" they won't offer the 50% discount on replacement.
It was authentic and passed their web check but nothing.
So I'll buy the cheap ones.

No,
I got sucked into these cheapies for the price and if I were to mess it up i wouldn't be wasting 30 bucks. They are good to practice with and i honed my skill with them. Once i put on a high quality screen protector the difference was near night and day from touch feel and feedback to how clear and cleaner everything looks
I'm still waiting for my glass protectors so i can test them out. Like i said those cheap ones from E-bay are only good for practice and quick protection until you can get better.
As for those asking why have it?
Gorilla Glass 3 is better then others but still not indestructible. Having a little more protection never hurts. As one person pointed out their $6-$30 investment may have saved their $500+ product. Well worth it imo.

Spigen's tempered glass is oleo-phobic treated glass. I cannot tell the difference, in smoothness of glide, etc. And it holds up pretty damn well to wear and tear. I had it for 13 months on my Note II and it didn't scratch much.
For the OP, if you even have to worry about it, get it. I have this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPIGEN-SGP-...l_Phone_Screen_Protectors&hash=item3a83e3d3ef
I had it on my Note 2, my wife's Iphone 5S, my (sold) nexus 5), and my S4. On my Note 2, I have it COMPLETELY encased in shock absorbing rubber and plastic. But if the phone falls and it's JUST RIGHT, the shock will still travel through the phone. Also, you can drop your phone nad have it hit the edge of a table and the case isn't gonna do a damn thing for it. I am a runner so I run a hell of a lot. and I use my phone once in a while when I need to change songs, answer a call, etc. When it's 3 degrees and your hands are cold, you can drop a phone. I did, and the glass protector cracked. no mark on my Note. I was able to recently sell my Note for $325, I wouldn't be able to do that if the screen was cracked!
IMO, totally worth the $20 I spent on it.
Buy it on ebay, it's still directly from Spigen, and it's $10 cheaper.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the $8 and the $35 Spigen Nano except for the thickness.
YMMV, but I can get 3 of the ones I bought for the same price as this Spigen.

Love the TBOLT..but geez the glass sucks!

I love everything about the tbolt...except for the glass. It is scratched already! i have owned an og droid, droid x,fascinate, and incredible. all of them had no screen protection, and none of them had any scratches. The tbolt after 2weeks has scratches already!! Im wondering what kind of sh*ty glass HTC used...WTF???
Yeah, I noticed a scratch on mine (nearly superficial and hard to see). I've been very careful with the phone too, so it's sort of annoying.

With the right glass...protectors are not needed. Im wondering what my glass is gonna look like after 6mos. A real bummer. I hate screen protectors
Its a 250 dollar phone, buy the 10 dollar screen protector as well. I treat my phones like they are my children but still use a screen protector because lets face it, who knows what is going to get into our pockets? Or, if you put it down on its face you may not see anything but that doesn't mean that there is nothing there.
Sorry to hear that it scratched but they don't just make screen protectors for the hell of it.
Dammit, you guys are making me paranoid. Ghost Armor, huh? Is that the best or what? Other opinions on best screen protector?
I usually don't use screen protectors cause I hate the feel they add. But I'm using one on my TB for the same reason the OP stated (and I had a Droid and Droid 2 previously)
Anyway, I use SGP Ultra Crystal... It feels like nothing is there, and it doesn't look like it has a screen protector on it.
I bought it from ebay, because ironically enough, their ebay store is cheaper, (no shipping vs $3 shipping)

+1 for the SGP Steinheil Ultra Crystals. I've used Zagg and Ghost Armor in the past, but then I tried the Stenheils and I will never go back to anything else.
Super strong, feels just like the glass to the touch after a day or so once they've been "broken in", and easily just as clear as the glass itself
EDIT: And yes, buy from their ebay store instead of their website or Amazon since ebay will get you free shipping (just as fast, too)
I just checked out the site for SGP, there's several version of these protectors? Which one are would you guys recommend?
Ultra Crystal Clear : Ultimate Clarity
Ultra Fine : Anti - Fingerprint
Ultra Oleophobic : Oil-Resistance
I'm leaning toward ultra fine.
what???? I had my eris for 15months and there has yet to be on the scratch on the glass. Some retarded coworker caused me to drop my phone down this ramp at work and the plastic got chipped yet the glass is still scratchless. I keep the phone in my left pocket with nothing else in it. Are you telling me that the tbolt would scratch in the conditions I have put my eris through? Besides the drop of course. eris glass > tbolt glass? that is hard to believe.
getting my tbolt today, so I still have a chance to cover it.
I wouldn't chance it man. If you have to, grab the crappy VZW protectors until you can get a better brand of protector.

Its not even close! It seems like regular glass if you ask me.
Yeah, definitely not gorilla glass or anything even remotely close. I had an iPhone 4 for 7-8 months before switching to the T-Bolt. Not a single scratch on my iphone screen in that time period, but had a scratch on my thunderbolt screen within the first 72 hours. Super disappointing.

Crystal Clear is the clearest and strongest. It looks and feels just like the phone's natural glass
Ultra Oleophobic is a slightly less strong and a slightly less clear (but still really clear!) than the Ultra Crystals, but resists fingerprints. Personally, the Ultra Crystals don't pick up fingerprints more than the glass.
Ultra Fine are very different from the two above. They have that matte-type screen that diminishes screen clarity and viewing angles, but they completely resist fingerprints. So it's a trade-off
I'll agree with this. They put some crappy screen on this phone. I take excellent care of my phones, I had my Eris for a year and a half, no screen protector, and not a scratch on it.
After about 3 or 4 days with my Thunderbolt, I noticed two small scratches on it. I went ahead and ordered a screen protector from BoxWave to at least prevent it from getting more. Maybe if I'm lucky putting the screen protector on there will make these two scratches less visible.
I don't even know how it got scratched. Nothing has happened to the phone.
EDIT: Ok, I just noticed a THIRD scratch on the damn phone! What the hell? I've been even MORE careful with the phone since I noticed the first two scratches, while I'm waiting for my screen protector to get here. What the hell are they coming from? Putting it in my pocket?! Geez.
This thread...wow...dont put your phone in your pocket without protection
Currently I'm using a body glove with a screen protector from Verizon, but I'm eagerly waiting for an Otterbox case to come out.

[Q] Best way to protect S4 display

Hi to all,
I'm considering buying something that can best protect my S4 display. What can you advise me against accidental falls or blows to the display?
What's best choice?
Cover?
Tempered display films?
Bumper?
Many thanks

Personally-and others may disagree- I have glass screen protector from mime. Price is steep, but with 50% off, no hassle warranty from mime, it was worth it. Mind you, I got three replacements because I dropped my phone on concrete, then accidently dropped ipad on my phone. Both cases resulted in glass protector shattering, but the screen itself is completely fine.
On top of that, I use otterbox commuter when I go mt climbing, or camping.

Mmm ok...MIME at the moment cost 24$
Is the MIME case friendly? I have the spigen case so a screen protector needs to have minimal coverage to make room for the case lip.

If you have a spigen case, buy a spigen tempered glass protector. They all are all comparable with each other as long as they are spigen brand. Personally I had a mime feather lite tempered glass protector and it worked great. They're quite thin, but thin enough to where it will crack if flexed too much during installation. I recommend a spigen glassTr protector. They're ultra durable and don't diminish the capability of the screen at all. Well worth the price.
As far as cases go, I'm using a spigen neo hybrid. I've dropped my phone from about six feet up a few times now, and the case has protected the phone perfectly. Its also fairly thin so it doesn't add a very much bulk at all. As far heavy protection goes, otter box ultimately has superior protection.

With mime, there is small space around the edges, for cases with curling lips.
I have spigen neo hybrid, and ultra thin case. Additionally, otterbox commuter and samsung official case (not sview nor flip cover). And I can say all the cases fit without a problem.
Otterbox or something similar. If you can get a discount even better, but the price is worth the protection these type of cases provide.

Buy from *ANYWHERE ELSE* and they do not support you. Even if it can be verified that the product is authentic.

This is why I didn't feel bad buying a knockoff slimarmor s-view. At least I know I'm not getting no customer service and the price reflects that. Spigen gets the benefit of claiming awesome customer service, but only for a select group who buy through 2 options when multiple others are available. It's like samsung voiding your warranty because you bought your phone from AT&T and not verizon or sprint.

Mime doesn't sell any cases.
This SPIGEN SGP Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector GLAS.t NANO SLIM protected my screen like a champ when it fell, screen first, from aprox. 5 feet.
I like the MIME better and is what i have. I also have the Neo Hybrid and the slim armor cases from Spigen, I like the MIME Ghost glass best for 2 reasons.
first, The hardness rating is a 9H and the Spigen is an 8H rating so MIME is harder to scratch technically.
Second, The MIME is a .32mm thickness compared to Spigen's .40mm. I like this because with the very thin case edges the MIME still is recessed so if/when you put the phone face down it isn't resting on the glass protector.
1 more thing. MIME (others likely do too) has a thin layer of coating to resist finger prints. Solvents like windex and such will break that down. Use something for cleaning LCD and you will be better off. My first MIME Ghost Glass i used windex all the time and my finger prints were getting bad on it (way easier) and my 2nd one i only use the actual screen cleaner stuff and after 3 or 4 months it's still hard to get it all mucked up with prints.

Unrelated to the thread topic, but I have one in white and love it. I would suggest going through the slim view armor thread and finding a reputable knockoff dealer and getting it from there. Spigen will not replace it most times when it fails, even if you order it through an 'official' store and the hinges on the official case sometimes break.
I paid $15 for my knockoff and after 6 months of use on a construction site its still like new aside from the scratches. A glass screen protector does make it harder to press the home button to light up the s-view display, but that's a function of the screen protector thickness, not the case. With an aluminum home button sticker it goes back to a very light press.
I also run it with an official spigen glass.tr protector (Picked it up for $20, otherwise I wouldn't buy it).
Oh I complained about Spigen, but did not indicate what I use.
I use a glass screen protector. Glass all the way.

They show up fast and only cost $9 or so. They are a little thicker than the Spigen Nano but for me it doesn't matter.
It definitely doesn't matter at $9.
Spigen tempered glass screen protector all the way.
Serious they are really just the best. Not only in terms of protection, it's also super slim and ultra clear.

Actually, you don't need to apply any protector to your phone, if you can stand for very minor scratch to your screen.
The corning glass is excellent scratch proof, I have been using no screen protector since my first iPhone 4 and coming with samsung s3, s4, iphone 5 and etc.... What you get is a better screen, color and contrast if you just don't mind the minor scratches.

I bought a cheap glass screen protector off of amazon. It was some generic one from China. With Amazon prime free shipping I couldn't pass it up.
pros: super clear, finger print resistant, protects screen well
cons: breaks after some abuse (though better this than the screen)
When my first one broke after considerable abuse I ordered two more to replace it. at $10 it wasn't bad. When the one I have on now breaks, I'll just pop my backup on and order another spare.
This cheap and the feel of real glass vs the Ghost Armor I had before, it's great.

I got mine on eBay and have the same philosophy. The glass fells like the screen and under abuse the tempered glass will crack.
It happened to me recently and I installed my spare and bought two more.
Can't beat the way the glass ones look and feel.
I also bought an aluminum button to extend the factory button. So now the home button is not recessed.
I have had my iloome screenmate for a good while and it hasn't cracked or anything and it has been used.

$20 is cheap insurance to protect your screen. A plastic one isn't going to protect your screen from damage. It may protect it from scratches but not from being busted if your phone is dropped.

You can't go wrong with the SPIGEN SGP Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector, once you install it correctly it really holds and protects the screen from pocket scruffs.
My cousin got into a motorcycle accident last year and the screen protector w/ the Spigen slim armor case protected his phone.
Tempered glass is the only thing for me from now on. $5 on eBay. Feels excellent, optically clear to me. Same screen sensitivity to me.
No need to blow 20+$ on big names. I break it, buy 5 more. No big deal.
Buy plastic sheets and the scratch and peel off in a week.
Even no name temp glass is better.
For me is the anti-glare screen protectors, for read is the best choice.

LifeProof Nuud for S 4 - Anyone own it?

Hi all,
I am generally very good with phones and rarely damage them. That said my S4 has developed a crack in the midframe and a small dent on the front bezel frame, perhaps from just being in my pocket. I don't keep keys or anything in the same pocket so I'm not sure how it happened.
I have been using the ZAGG Glass screen protector on it and LOVE it. It is the clearest and smoothest protector I have ever used.
I think I want side protection for this thing. I probably should have protection since I work in active environments.. sometimes dusty..
A couple questions:
Once this case is on, how easy is it to take off to say, change microSD or swap batteries?
Will this case work if I use the ZAGG glass screen protector? This protector goes bezel to bezel PERFECTLY, although it does not cover the earpiece or sensor windows at the top.
Thoughts?
The case is very tough to take off, but it's not all bad because it has a tight seal for its water resistance. And secondly, it'll fit with the screen protector but it will not be water proof anymore, the glass is too thick. Hope this helps

Hmm, might be a deal breaker! Anyone know of a thin case that mostly just offers side drop protection but works with the glass screen protector?
Tech 21 impact mesh case. It is very light weight and offers crazy good protection!

Hi,
I haven't been using Lifeproof nuud case, but couple weeks ago I was looking for case for my Galaxy S4 and I bought Seidio Obex with holster and in my opinion it is very good case.
It is really waterproof case (I've checked it), dust proof (most important for me), impact proof and has built in screen protector (is giving amazing touch).
But there is couple things which are not so good, first of all sound is a bit muffled and second thing is that some ppl will complain about it size, but for me it isn't so important.
As a conclusion, I can only say that, for me personally it was really good purchase and I'm looking to buy additional car mount to holster.

I've had the spigen slim armor case since I've bought the phone and I couldn't ask for anything more, slim, very protective, and looks great.

Tempered glass vs. plastic screen protector

I have been a long time user of the $10 3 pack of plastic film protectors you can get on amazon, they work fine however after a few months they get scratched, hold tons of fingerprints and need to be replaced. What I'm wondering is would a tempered glass screen protector necessarily have any better fingerprint resistance or scratch resistance vs the plastic or is the only real advantage the fact the the tempered glass will shatter if dropped and not your phones screen. I'm considering the zagg glass only because of the free replacement. I previously used their invisible shield on a nexus 7 and was not impressed at all but am willing to give them another try only because of the free replacement.
I've tried many plastic screen protectors and I used to have the same issue after a while they would track tons of fingerprints and wear down. I tried out the iLoome 8H Hardness Premium Screen Protector with Oleophobic Coating for the LG G2 and LG G3 and it's amazing. I feel like it helps against the fingerprints and scratches.
I was previously a hater of screen protectors (because of the plastic ones) until I realized how anal I could be over micro scratches on my actual screen. Once I noticed one, I bought a glass screen protector for the first time. Was the Caribu on Amazon. I failed to apply it correctly because it was a first time thing but I still loved the feel, thought it was great & left it on for a couple weeks. I ordered the Bepak tempered glass on eBay which ships from China. Lined it up perfect first try and the adhesive slowly migrated across my screen leaving no bubbles. It's smoother and resist fingerprints better than the naked glass. No scratches yet.
In short, tempered glass screen protectors are the only reason I can even say I like screen protectors.

I love my zagg glass. I too had issues with scratches on the others.
Fortunately I have not had this one break. My buddy has broken 3 and received replacements no issues

I always used the lesser destructible protectors from zagg skins or clearcoat etc. With this device I decided I try out the zagg tempered glass and I don't think I would ever go back to any other screen protector. They give you added protection and are super clear! Definitely worth the extra investment
No matter what, I can never stay away from android for long.
Stay away from the Bodyguardz tempered glass screen protector. It has sensitivity issues. Hopefully AT&T takes mine back when the new one I ordered from Spigen gets here.
I have the XtremeGuard Spartan Tempered Glass screen protector. It feels like glass, it seems to be just as sensitive, and it's not cloudy like some matte screen protectors are. There are only 2 things wrong with it: the top-right corner refuses to adhere, and it normally costs $50. I got it during a 90% off sale so it cost me $5 (totally worth it), but there's no way I would ever spend more than $10 on this thing. $5 was about right.

My local at&t wouldn't take mine back
Thankfully the sensitivity issue has gotten better with use. But it still messes up from time to time. I did get it 50% off, as well as my otter box case, so I guess I can't complain too much.
Side note: I'm not sure if I'm the only one that does this but I get the otter box defender and I actually pop out their "screen protector" and use a glass screen protector with it. Looks nice and feels protected

You are not the only one. I popped mine out too. Did the same on my S3.
I has the screen sensitivity issue when I first put the zagg on. I haven't noticed it lately however. Could be that I've just completely forgotten about it or it genuinely could have gotten better.

Wanted to chime in that I am also having issues with the Bodyguardz tempered screen protector. Traded a s5 for the g3 (So happy I did) and I've noticed things will get selected when I'm trying to scroll. Then other times I have to select something multiple times to get it to work. Driving me nuts.
Zagg Tempered Glass
Figured I'd add my 2 cents I've had my Zagg glass on about a month and it has been absolutely flawless.. and like the video shows.. that sumbitch will not scratch. Its got those hard plastic covers beat by a mile. I'd swear by it.. Once you put on a Zagg glass protector.. you'll kick yourself for ever having messed with others.
Sensitivity : 10
Clarity : 10
Ease of application : 10
and its lifetime gauranteed ... will be on every phone I ever use from the g3 on out :good:
I bought ZeroLemon Tempered Glass and love it. Simple to install and feels great. Never going back plastic screen covers. For 8.99 plus .69 cents for S/H cant beat it.
Wanted to update, I went to best buy and bought the zagg glass one and it's great. Way better then the bodyguardz. No finicky screen issues and not as thick so cases fit just fine. I have to agree with dlbcell.
Zagg Glass +1
Just thought I would chime in and say the Zagg Glass is amazing and I would rec it to anyone. Just as a plus, show this at any bestbuy and you can get it for 22 bucks. Now that is worth it 100%. Would have gladly paid 40 bucks for it if I hadent found this.

Thanks for the link. I had cracked the glass screen protector I had on my G3 and I have been in the market for a Zagg one due to their lifetime guarantee. Can't pass up that price!
Got my G3 at best buy today. Ordered a Zagg glass screen protector from Amazon after hearing all off the good things.

I had the same issue with Bodyguards. At intermittent times parts of the touchscreen failed to respond to touch. Going to make a complaint and see if I can get my money back or at least a credit on my bill. I have since put on a Zagg Glass and have not noticed the issue...and it actually feels better for swyping.
I swear by Realook protectors. Sure, they're plastic, but they are the best fitting and best feeling I have found. Crystal clear and no orange peel or rubbery drag. I tried the Ziess glass cover on my g2 and could never get over the combination of the extra thickness at the edges and that cases either lifted it or eventually just plan broke it.
You have fingers, you will put prints on anything.
I'll never buy another plastic screen protector. Glass is the way to go..
Its like Cassette tapes vs CD's there's no contest...
I get mine of Amazon and pay between 5 and 10 dollars ..
