Hey there guys, this thread is noob friendly and is made especially for those of you who just got their first Sony phone and decided to flash a custom kernel or rom.
I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone, use this tutorial at your own risk.
Things you'll need:
- Xperia L with Unlocked Bootloader(ofcourse haha) Look here on how to unlock your bootloader.
- Flashtool
Installing a kernel (This tutorial is for 4.2.2 only, that is 15.3.A.0.26+)
1. Download phantom kernel from here (both Phantom_modules.zip and the boot.img) Place the "Phantom_modules.zip" into your phone (sd card or internal storage) Or you can use any other kernel's boot.img
2. After installing flashtool, or if you already have it installed, open it and click on the Flash icon (the first icon from the left)
4. When it asks you to choose a bootmode, select fastboot mode and press ok.
5. After all this has done turn of your phone (Xperia L).
6. Get out your usb cable and plug it into your computer while holding the "volume up" button. (notice your phone will glow blue below, this means that it is in fastboot mode.)
7. On the pop up window where it says "By Doomlord", choose "select kernel to flash". Locate your boot.img file that you just downloaded a while ago and select it.(Notice if the boot.img file is not showing up in the file menu, on the right cornor make sure the file type is set as "*.img")
8. Be patient and wait till the kernel has been flashed, should take no longer than 10 seconds.
9. Now select "Reboot device into system" and wait for your phone to power on, now once it's powered on without any problems turn it off. Now turn on your phone and wait for a purple glow then hold down the "volume down"button. Now you'll be in CWM (clock work recovery mod) Once you're here select install from zip. Locate your "phantom_modules.zip"(or the zip file, of your kernel choice) and select yes. Wait for it to be flashed and then go back and, reboot sytem.
10. From here you can flash any kernel/rom via CWM, like Thunderzap or civic. Just boot into cwm, select install from zip and locate your kernel zip file and hit install.

Hit thanks if this helped you out.
I don't think that's needed to be Phantom Kernel, or any other in specific, since the kernel provide a recovery with the possibility to flash a zip, it's ok (correct if I'm wrong).
I had unlocked my bootloader, then flashed the boot.img inside of the flashable zip from ThunderZap, then, rebooted to recovery right way, and flashed the entire package from ThunderZap.
Regards and thanks for the helpfull post!

No probs
Well it was the first kernel for 4.2.2 and that's why I put it up instead. I know we can use the boot.img from thunderzap too but if I'm not specific enough most of the noobs wont understand. I also chose that kernel because it comes with a recovery so then you can just flash other kernels via cwm.
Complicated - with properly installed drivers you can start flashtool with usb-cable plugged in. After clicking the flash icon choose "Reboot into fastboot mode (via ADB)".
When the phone is in fastboot mode (blue led) choose "Select kernel to flash". No need to turn off the phone and play with cable and vol-down button...

Sorry for noob question, but in step 9, can I skip the flashing "phantom_modules.zip" part and keep the stock kernel?

Ignore this. I thought it was CWM only. I should have researched more before installing this. But I installed it and it is working good.

Flash any (4.2.2) stock rom and try again. That's why your WiFi probably isn't working. Either that or you didn't flash the kernel zip file (ex thunderzap4.1.zip) after fast booting the kernel img.

WiFi now working
I am also facing the same issue where wifi is not working on any Rom. So after following the steps mentioned earlier. What exactly should be done like boot to recovery then flash gapps and then reboot. Once booted flash boot.img from the Rom and then boot to recovery to flash the full kernal zip package..?

I have a HUGE problem. Please help me ASAP!
I just flashed my Xperia L to CM 12.1. I was already on CM 12 before. So I went into recovery, wiped everything and installed the new ROM from zip. Everything worked fine except for the network signal. I was getting no network signal at all. So, when I rebooted the phone, I saw that the ThunderZap kernel was also removed. I tried to flash the kernel using flashtool, but this particular variant has 2 .img files (bootlp and bootkk). I flashed them both using the FlashtTool. Now, when I reboot my phone, all I see is the ThunderZap logo. Please help me ASAP, as this is my only primary driver phone.

Hi. I have a similar problem.
Phone (xperia J) is working fine with stock rom, rooted and unlocked bootloader. But when i flash custom rom there is no IMEI, no signal and no efs folder (nv_data file). And if I go back to stock rom the IMEI is back and mobile network works.
So my question is is there any way to transfer IMEI, recreate efs folder, so I can use custom roms?
I have to post 10 times before I can post links outside this forum.

Use it at your own risk. Read this text first before you get started.
If you follow these steps your phone is back to the original settings. You have your signal back and you IMEI.
Now you want your phone rooted! Right? Right!
For rooting Sony Xperia J 11.0.A.7.5 version, 11.2.A.0.21, 11.2.A.0.31 (and or later) using ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery necessitating an unlocked bootloader (unlocked bootloader).
Broadly speaking, the rooting procedure using CWM recovery to install su, busybox and Superuser.apk files bundled in the update. The steps are: flash CWM, rooting package update using CWM recovery, then flash the stock kernel back.
Preparation:
1. Fastboot files here
2. Unlock Boatloader.
3. CWM Sony Xperia J (boot.img)
4. Sony Xperia J stock kernel 11.0.A.7.5 (kernel.sin), can be extracted from the image ftf.
5. Update file for rooting (root_xperia_signed.zip
Update March 8, 2013:
All the required files in the download is packaged in the following:
- Version 11.0.A.7.5
- Version 11.2.A.0.21
- Version 11.2.A.0.31 (May 30, 2013)
The steps:
1. Root_xperia_signed.zip copy files to the internal / external sdcard.
2. Prepare boot.img, kernel.sin, fastboot.exe into the working folder. (Make self a folder on you PC Harddisk)
3. Prepare boot.img, kernel.sin, fastboot.exe into the working folder.
Turn off the phone, unplug the USB cable and go into fastboot mode by pressing and holding down the Vol + Up while plugging in the USB cable, fastboot mode can be seen from the blue LED light on the top panel.
4. Check whether the connection is correct fastboot, type in Command Prompt:
fastboot getvar version
If prompt <waiting for device> is displayed, then the connection is not successful, try to check whether the driver for fastboot already installed.
5. Flash CWM and restart the phone:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
6. When the phone restarts, observe the LED on the bottom of the panel when it turns purple, immediately press and hold the Vol + Up button until the LED turns blue to get into CWM. USB cable can then be removed.
7. At CWM, select install zip from sdcard, then choose zip from sdcard / external sdcard and select the file in step 1 above. Continue reboot system now and turn off the phone (if necessary by removing the battery and repeat to enter fastboot mode).
8. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
9. Flash stock kernel:
fastboot flash boot kernel.sin
fastboot reboot
10. Turn on the phone, check whether the application is installed SuperSU. Congratulations rooting successful.

Thanks, but that's not what i needed.
I already have stock rom rooted and working. Problem is if I install custom rom (FXP, PA), rom starts but no mobile signal and no IMEI. So I cannot use it.
Is there a way to like "copy/paste" IMEI from stock rom to custom rom?
edit: read somewhere on xda that this is a CM10 bug and CM10 based roms for xperia J.
disregard my last post (and previous post also)
fixed it!
what I did:
1. flash original stock ICS rom - 11.0.A.7.5.CE
2. reboot phone and then shutdown (not sure if this is necessary)
3. flash CWM img from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034639
4. install custom rom (FXP233)
5. reboot
and now mobile signal works and IMEI is back.
hope it helps somebody and sorry for hijacking your thread Stoetel

Here you can find the latest Android 4.0.4 version for the Sony Xperia Tipo ST21
And here the CWM for Tipo.
Kernel can you extract from the ftf file. You can open th ftf file with Winzip or Winrar.
Flashtool. You can also use this program to check if your phone is bootlocked.
Go check this site if you need your phone to unlock the bootloader.
Follow the instructions above in the previous post. Or search on this forum for the solution.
Good luck.
Hey folks,
I ran into a problem with my Xperia J!
These are what I did:
Unlocked Bootloader
Rooted with Doomlord's way
--Everything till now was OK--
Now, I flashed CWM from fastboot!
After that, the phone doesn't boots. It either goes into the Recovery or Rebbots with 'Green LED' ON and for 1-2 seconds, a green charging symbol appears and nothing happens at all after that!
Tried to flash aokp, but no help! :crying::crying:
If anyone could help me with these, I'll be very thankful
Thank You in advance!
Flash boot.img (this is cm10 kernel, include twrp and cwm) with flashtool ,enter cwm when you see pink light with pressing volume - button and flash aokp! Problem solved
Boot.img you can find in my mediafire or 4shared folder for xperia j

Hi,
i'm trying to install AOSPA on my Android, and for this I need a kernel with CWM on my device. To flash the kernel .zip, I think that I need CWM, but how I can install CWM on my device? Should I flash the boot.img contained in the .zip of the kernel via flashtool?
You should first make sure you have unlocked the bootloader. If your device is unlocked then you can flash boot.img on fastboot mode from flashtool or adb

After you have unlocked the bootloader flash boot.img. That will give you CWM. I can recommend Phantom latest kernel version After reboot use CWM to flash AOSP on it. You need to place AOSP on the memory card or internal memory before though.

Sorry forget to mention that. First copy the zip file on your external SD card. Then flash boot.img. After you flash the boot.img. You will get CWM. Press volume down buttom multiple times to get into the CWM. After you get to the CWM install the zip. You are done now.
P.S.: The zip contain modules for wifi. If you haven't flash the zip file you won't get wifi working. At any time you can flash the zip file.
I flashed using cwm a custom rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/development/xperia-z1-rom-tipo-dual-lb-ulb-users-t2927997) , specifically the S.P.3. I followed the installation as advised but after the installation finished when I rebooted the system wouldn't power on. The only thing it does is it vibrates as if it would power on and simultaneously the litlle light flashes green for one sec. I chose the intuise kernel and most xperia z1 settings. I ve got a nandroid backup but how can i flash it?
do you have an unlocked bootloader?

if your bootloader is locked, then you can't choose a custom kernel from the installer, i am the rom dev and i mentioned this problem specifically, and i said: if your bootloader is locked, then please choose "Stock kernel" in the installer, and i wrote it in big font.
now you need to re-flash stock rom using flashtool, and then proceed with rom installation again, and choose "Stock kernel" in the installer.
i hope this helped :good:
Thanks I have already manage to reflash using flash tool but it was a bit difficult as the only roms it recognizes are the .ftf ones. Anyway thanks.

Hi S Advance Community! I don't own this device but I compiled CM14.1 and I need testers who know how to logcat, use odin to reflash boot image, etc.
THIS BUILD IS TOTALLY UNTESTED (i don't have an s advance)!!! AS A RESULT, RECOVERY MODE MIGHT NOT WORK AFTER FLASHING THIS ROM AND YOU'LL NEED TO FLASH STOCK ROM USING ODIN IF THAT HAPPENS!
I just need info if it boots or not, and logcat/last_kmsg if it doesn't.

EDIT: Use this guide on how to make a logcat/last_kmsg dump when the ROM doesn't boot if you don't know how to (no need to flash the zip on that thread as this rom is an eng build already).
EDIT #2: ROM doesn't boot so I need the /proc/last_kmsg file obtainable from recovery after a failed boot.
Thanks! Downloading it ?
I'm waiting for feedback from the already downloaded it. If successful, please share some screenshots. Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks for testing! While the phone is stuck on the samsung logo, can you press the 3 button combo for recovery for 10+ seconds (without pulling the battery before) until the phone boots to recovery and copy /proc/last_kmsg to sdcard using recovery then upload it here? I need to see the kernel logs if it's an init related issue or a library related one.
Yea ! The installation was a success but it didn't boot...Stuck On the splash screen...I will flash it again and will let you know the kernal logs and stuff.....Thanks For your support for Janice
I will send tomorrow because today i haven't had the time, so that the last time I installed this android even holding the 3 keys to enter the recovery mode the cell phone was stopped on the logo of samsung, would have some other way of copying the /proc/last_kmsg ? But tomorrow i will install again and I'll see if i go into recovery, sorry my english if it is bad is that i am from Brazil
On Codina must be enabled SELINUX with boot parameter - 1 and cmdline=selinux.bootmode=permissive to boot up Nougat. For MM this wasn't needed.
