I have been running a light case on my phone but have considered taking it off as I never seem to drop it.
Those of you without a case on your phone,
what condition is it in now?
Have you dropped it? How did it respond?
Thanks!!
Only had mine for a few days, but it's in marvelous condition. The screen doesn't seem to hold onto fingerprints at all.

Really? The only part on mine getting prints like crazy is the back. My screen doesn't for some reason.

I've gone case-less since I got mine on launch day, and cosmetically never had a single problem. A couple of months ago though I dropped it on a tile floor, and even though the screen or body didn't crack it wouldn't power back on, so something internal must have been damaged. I was able to use my insurance to get a replacement, but I'm not sure having a case on it other than something with some shock protection like an otter box would have helped anyway.

Yeah the screens not really an issue it's just the back, the blacks the worst for finger prints though

You know Murphy's Law...once you take the case off you will drop hard on the concrete....
This phone is waaaay to weak to be naked... I've broken my screen so many times from knee height drops.. one including being dropped on carpet. My old VIVOW was a lot stronger....
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I don't have a case I never liked them. I have cracked the screen on my old s3 though, happened to hit the metal strip that separates the room..Other than that I have a right pocket only rule and I make sure i NEVER put it on my lap when driving.
Been using my s3 without a case since the day it came out. Couple nicks around the metallic edge but otherwise in perfect condition. I don't really have a habit of dropping phones though.
Majority of my drops are because of my son.... when I drop it myself I get the ninja/football player move of catching it and nearly kicking it through a field goal...but I like to think I am the worst draft pick ever because I usually catch it with my foot and it goes nowhere.

I've had my phone naked for about 5 months and I only have a few light scratches on the back, that are not noticeable without really looking for them.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I've had mine since launch and dropped it once on a concrete floor at work and a few times at the house. The only drop that caused any damage was the one at work and it barely scuffed the corner of the metal trim. So little it took me a minute to find it.

i too have had mine since launch and am using a Ringke "SLIM-Lite" case...no screen protector.
device is flawless!
no scratches, scuffs, or any other blemishes.
I have been using a rokform rokbed v3 S3 case just for the mount and the phone is in good condition. no screen scratches. the case has a tendency to scratch the battery cover so i got a replacement to use with the case. not easy to find the black verizon S3 battery covers so that is sitting in the box the phone came in.
I also have a rokform v3 (awesome case) on mine since I saw a drop test on YouTube. There is no way I would feel safe without it.

no case ever
i only have a screen protector on my phone. I avoid cases for phones because I keep my phone in my pocket and I don't like the size of the phone with a case on. This may not be the best idea because I am also quite clumsy but I really do like the thin sleek phone with no case. In any case, I must say that I am quite impressed with this phone. I've had it for about 5 months and have dropped it somewhere between 10-15 times. It is usually just a small drop but I have definitely dropped it out of my coat while taking the coat off and out of the car when getting out multiple times and only have a few small scratches on the back. There has been no damage to the screen at all. So to anyone that is scared of removing the case, my advice is to enjoy the design of the phone and not worry about the back. After all, a replacement for the back cover is cheaper then many of the cases out there.
I run mine naked about half the time, in a tpu case the rest of the time. I have two very small nicks in the silver trim around the sides, and a little scuff on the home button. I've had the phone since a few days before launch, though I did replace the battery cover recently because I broke it taking it off one time. Always have an SGP Ultra Nano screen protector though.
I'd say most people should have no problem running with no case, but it may not be the best idea. I love the feel of the naked phone and frequently use it like that, but I have dropped it from about waist height a few times onto hardwood floors or low carpet.
The phone feels nice enough that you do keep a firm grip on it and treat it like your precious, and if you're careful to keep your pocket empty you won't scratch it there. But because it's so slick, it can slip out of your pocket when sitting, or off of a surface you've set it on. Plus if you have anything else in your hand, it's easy to forget to keep a firm grip on the phone.
I've now got a Cruzerlite tpu case that looks and feels awesome, and like any tpu case removes in seconds with no wear. The material provides a great deal of protection for its minimal bulk, I've accidentally thrown my old Droid RAZR onto asphalt and concrete on separate occasions with just a slim tpu case with no harm done. Recently, I've been carrying with that case for peace of mind, and taking it off on occasion to use it, or if I'm at something rather formal.
But I see no need for something more than tpu, like an Otterbox, for the average person. If you're particularly clumsy, if you frequently skate, run, bike, 4 wheel, hunt, etc with it, or have a fairly physical profession I can see it, but for the rest of us it's overkill.

You could be Mr. Irrelevant!
I love the feel of the rubberized matte material on the black phone but feel like it'll succumb to peeling like how my Logitech MX mice have succumbed to over time.
The charging port already has scratches on it from me trying to plug in a charger without guiding it in delicately already, and this made me wonder.

Not so worried about peeling, more that the finish will wear down and go 'shinney' like my old HTC One X.

That's the reason I went for the white one, my One X went shiny as well and I didn't want to run the risk again.
I've wondered if it's going to start outright peeling like the coatings on the Cr-48 Chromebooks. I've been waiting for the thread, and in the mean time, been babying my n5.

I originally bought a black 32gb N5, but after playing with it for about 30s it felt like it wasn't going to last very long. The last pocketable item I had with soft touch plastic was an MP3 player that ended up looking like a severe burns victim after about 6 months with the coating peeling off. I returned the black one and now waiting for my white one to come in lol
I think at that point if it does get bad than just get one of those ultra thin TPU cases or hard shell cases and cover it up. I was thinking about putting one on now to try and avoid scratching the back but thought to myself, it is just a phone and is meant to be used, so just use it and not worry about scratching the back!! Especially with how nice the back and sides of the N5 feel, be a shame to not use it. Don't get me wrong, I have a screen protector on it but I am starting to wonder why I am so worried about scratching the back, its the back of the phone after all...
I also read that the back of the phone is just held on with tabs and maybe a little bit of glue, we may be able to buy a replacement back for our phones and if so then there is zero reason to worry about the back.
I actually think it'll be alright. Maybe the black one will go, but the white one feels less rubbery for lack of better words. I honestly think it'll stay the same.

Same coating as on my Razer Deathadder mouse. That has held up well after years of use except for where i used to wear a ring. On that spot the coating wore away.

OP here, mine has held up real well. No fading or peeling at all. The only issues are the inserts for the NEXUS letters falling out and the cracking of the side frame.
Do you use a case or pouch with your phone at all?

The coating has rubbed off on the corners on mine. Only the edges of the back is exposed as I have a vinyl skin on. The only wear I put my phone through that would cause that is putting it in and taking it out of my pocket.

Hi guys.
I have a nexus 5 which I got at launch, and on the whole really like it. one thing that I have noticed is that the phone never lies flat. It is ever so twisted which means (using a case) I can never type with it flat on a surface. I bought it through the Google play store in the UK. Is this something that people have heard about? Can I get it swapped for another one? Apart from that it works well. Thanks.
Nick

it doesnt lie flat for typing because of the camera. it is not twisted.
I know that the camera protrudes somewhat, but if I lie it screen down it is not flat, and rocks. With the case on, it has little feet to make it flat, but it never is.

Tried taking the case off? The cheap cases are not made perfectly.
Not the case. It happens with just the phone. I can slightly twist it in the opposite direction and it is good for a couple of minutes, but it inevitably goes back to its chosen shape.

mine is flat, screen down.
you still mentioned never typing on it a flat surface, hence my comment about the camera causing it to rock.
The case I have for it has little feet at each corner so if the nexus was flat, I would be able to type on a flat surface without rocking due to the camera lens being a mm or 2 off the table. So do you think I should return it, and would they accept it as a bonefide return?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Take the case off and place the phone face down on a flat surface. If it sits flat the phone is fine and the case is bent. If it still rocks then you might have a case with Google to RMA
Thanks Eddy. As I have said previously I have tried it with the case off. It does not sit flat screen down. The case is perfectly flat, but due to it being soft rubber, it twists just like the phone. I will contact Google for an RMA.

I can confirm mine has this issue as well lol.
i laid my flat face down on a flat desk surface and it wobbles from 2 corners diagonally from each other but not from the other 2 corners.
so strange. never noticed it before
its probably because i put mine in my back pocket and sit down sometimes. no biggie
Thanks nextelbuddy. Its just one of those things that annoys me. I am gonna see if they will replace it as it does seem to be a manufacturing issue, not a back picket issue

Slight twist that is only seen laying screen down.
Not sure this is a RMA, my phone is around two weeks old, going to check buddies at work tonight and verify if his is same before making a decision on this.

I have a launch day model, and it's been a problem for me. Rocks with the screen facing down between the corner the camera lens is and the corner diagonal to it.
I RMA'ed back in December, slightly better, but still had some wobble to it. Ended up keeping my original phone and got a case that doesn't have "feet" (case that's curved itself) so I don't even notice it anymore.
I have the same experience. Got my first N5 last year as soon as it became available in the Netherlands, noticed the wobble about 1 month later because I bought a case (Spigen slim armor) which cancels out the effect of the protruding camera lens on the backside, and noticed the wobbling while texting. First thought it was the case that caused it, took the case off and tested with the screen down: distinct warping on a diagonal line that runs from the camera lens corner to the microphone corner.
Decided to RMA it at the beginning of this month, and got a new one last Friday. I checked the serial number, it's definitely a later batch than my earlier N5. Of course I tested it as soon as I got out of the packaging: perfectly flat! But this evening after only a couple days of use, I noticed the wobble had returned. Not as much as with my previous N5, but still noticeable.
I can only conclude this phone's body is extremely sensitive to warping, which seems to be caused by simply carrying it in your pocket (like I do with all my phones since 1996). It is the first one ever that suffers from warping. It seems most if not all people who experience this issue report warping on the exact same diagonal line. This indicates a design flaw, which is apparently not yet solved in recent batches.
As much as I love Nexus phones, I'm seriously thinking of replacing the N5 for a different one with better build quality because every time I use my phone on a flat surface it annoys the hell out of me. And it certainly will not be an LG again.

Put a perfectly straight ruler on top of your screen. Mine is flat.
I used the spigen slim armor on a previous N5 I had and it did have the wobble. However, seeing as it might be a common issue, I would say think about it before you RMA. It's possible your replacement will have the same issue, or even a different issue that you will notice after you send this one back. I RMA'd a phone for the button rattle issue which seems like a minuscule issue for most people, but it was annoying for me. It seems like this is similar to you as the button rattle was for me. But just letting you know.
Just a warning to everyone wanting to get this phone because it can "take the drops."
So I'm getting ready to watch the World series, sitting on my sofa and my V10 falls off the edge of the sofa on to the floor and guess what? The SCREEN CRACKED! Are you kidding me LG? You boast how this thing can take the drops and my phone falls TWO FEET and the screen cracks? Now I have to pay a deductible to get another phone? Yeah...let me get that phone, take it in and trade it for a different brand. Not sure if mine is defective or something but I've had bigger drops on other phones that had no issues. This is NOT what I expected from this phone - a phone I was hoping to keep and carry with no case. HORRIBLE experience! My G4 can take a bigger drop than that!
It's physics and coincidence. You were unlucky enough to have it a weak spot.
It happens.
Sadly, LG doesn't do the one free screen replacement like some other OEMs do.
Any phone can shatter with one unlucky 2 foot drop. LG is no different.
Sorry about the broken screen, though. That does suck.
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk
Sorry for your loss.
I get that but they WILL be hearing from me since they tout in commercials how you can drop the phone and it can take it. Hopefully with the phone being so new they won't want the negativity out there about this phone and since I have the G4 and the V10, maybe they will be nice enough to take care of it. Who knows? Can't hurt to try. I'll update the thread once I talk to them.
Well, they only tested to drop the phone at 1-1.5 foot, anyway.

Actually, this is from LG's website:
1. The LG V10 passed a military standard test for shock (MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, Procedure IV – "Transit Drop"") that consists of 4-foot drops onto 2" of plywood over concrete. The test includes impacts on every face, edge and corner of the device. Further, the device passed an enhanced version of the Transit Drop test consisting of 26 drops from 4 feet onto a concrete surface. "Passed" is defined as the absence of any of the following issues: surface cracks, inoperability of device including camera, and separation of screen from monitor. Device may not perform as tested in all conditions. Test performed in controlled environment. Do not attempt.
I get that "device may not perform as tested in all conditions" but for Pete's sake, this thing dropped 2 feet onto carpet.
Very sad.
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk
CARPET? I'm sorry, but I don't believe that. There is no way your phone dropped 2 feet onto a soft, impact absorbing surface like carpet and broke. Carpet is probably the safest thing you could possibly drop the phone on!

I swear to you. I even sarcastically said to my wife, "Oh no...my phone fell. I'm SOOOO Worried." Then I picked it up and it was cracked. I was completely shocked myself. I kept saying, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????!!!!" Had I dropped it getting out of my car or something onto concrete, I would understand. I'm still in shock.
By the way ---- it's berber carpet and there's currently no padding under it because we had a flood and are waiting for new flooring. Thin carpet on top of concrete. Still...CARPET.
I am sorry, i recently dropped my Nexus 6. Although it didn't hit carpet it did have a case. I was bummed non the less
Thats unfortunate. No two pieces of glass are the same though. I work on concrete all day and i cant tell you how many phones ive dropped on it and never cracked a screen, knock on wood. I'm like you, I don't plan on using a case with this phone. I may think twice about that now.

So today i have finally broke my phone I am currently phoneless until my replacement screen comes in so i will be going phoneless from here until atleast 4/20!! So i would like to describe what happened. Usually this phone is a tank and i can drop it 1 million times without it breaking until today happened. I was already having a really bad day i woke up late in the morning and almost missed my bus. i went to school looking like trash and then i end up going through the whole day with a really bad headache. I had to deal with a horrible mat teacher who gave me a (no joke) 66.60 for the marking period. half the class failed. So whatever i dealt with her then i went through my day until i was in my last period class. i was wearing gym shorts today so my pockets were really loose and i had my phone in my right pocket. I was sitting in a chair that was 2 feet off the ground and BAM my phone smashes into the floor. At this point I'm like "oh crap its done" so i flip it over and there was only a tiny crack in the top left hand corner so im like oh okay no biggy I can deal with that. That wasn't the worst of it. The screen powered on perfectly fine nothing looked wrong however only one half of the touch screen worked. Touching the screen anywhere under the power button wouldn't work. Running a DPI of 420 puts 2 essential things right in that exact area (dpi wont matter for the second thing) 1. My lock password is toast so i cant unlock my phone 2. even if i could unlock my phone (some cases i was able to unlock my phone but it works for 5 seconds then stops) the nav bar lives in that zone so im screwed. I just find it funny how a tiny drop can be so fatal and disable half a screen while i drop my phone daily from many different heights and thee wort it got was a scratch. I'm curious what are your drop stories?????
PS. if you don't see me participate in the threads I usually stalk its because I prefer to browse and post to XDA from XDA Labs. The website sucks.
I have repaired my phone and ordered the black dualpro or whatever its called case by insipio I ended up getting it for $25 should be here in a few days the company who ships it is very reliable

Maybe if you just got black or something. Some of us customized them in Moto maker or skinned them. It would be useless to cover it up and I don't like the clear cases. Sure you have to be careful but you really should even with a case. The thing is accidents happen and a case isn't a guarantee that the phone won't break anyways.

@WelcomeToTheSkye Sorry to hear about your phone. And your class. I was so scared I was gonna drop my MXP until I got a case. I was expecting the rubber on the back to be grippy but mine is slippery compared to my old moto E and the metal makes it worse. If you'd like a case recommendation, I have the Diztronic case and the Incipio Octane. They're both good. The octane looks better because it lets you back material show through and it adds more grip, but the headphone port cutout isn't big enough for my ATH-M50s
The Diztronic is really really nice. It just doesn't add as much grip. The buttons are also really easy to press. It's the one I usually use.

I got a pretty nice looking carbon fibre look case off eBay for less than £5 and it's saved my phone no end of times, if you go caseless and your phone breaks you only have yourself to blame
Wallet cases are also a great way to protect your phone/screen. I looked around on Amazon for a while and the only well reviewed one was the one by a company called J&D. I purchased it in turquoise and paired it with the Pleson tempered glass screen protector and the only downside is that all tempered glass protectors for this phone come up a little on the sides due to the curved screen but otherwise this is a protective and attractive combination.

Make sure you head over to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-X-Pure-Moto-X-Style/bd-p/449 before having Moto Mobility work on it. There's some disagreement over whether it's a scam or negligence, but either way you're in for a lot of trouble.
I don't use a case either because it makes the phone too large for a pocket. Too bad Moto didn't put a rim around the glass like every other Chinese and Japanese phone has. I guess they wanted the iPhone look with a minimalist white face and a cracked screen.

Same thing happened to me I stripped 6/20 of the screws... Turns out if you rip the screen off by getting a screwdriver under it you can still the stripped screws out of the back frame. It doesn't need all 20 screws it needs the one to hold the motherboard to the screen and at least 8 to keep it in place

Everybody says this so I'm betting Leno glued the screws in. It's fixable if it's into plastic. Lift the edge of the screw head with a knife tip as you turn it. Once it's out, clean the threads. Dip a thin wire into plastic welding glue (modeling and pipe glue works) and wet the inside of the screw hole. Clear out any excess glue. Let the glue dry somewhere warm for at least an hour. The screws should fit now.
Can you post a link to the replacement you got? I bought one of the higher priced ones on ebay and have had three with screen issues. The seller just wants to refund me at this point, so I need to find one that will not have light bleed, dead pixels and an unresponsive screen. Thanks in advance!
I am not recommending anyone do this and am not responsible if you mess your phone up. but this worked For my stripped screw. Replaced my screen today. One screw stopped I drilled the head of the screw out. I used a left handed bit because you drill in reverse with these and if the bit grabs it may unscrew. May but didn't. It made me very nervous but worked. And the part of the screw that was left in didn't matter since I bought the screen with the bezzle/frame. And I had a extra screw same size. It was Philips head but worked. There is a good chance if you try to drill out your stripped screws you will completely brake your phone. But there is that small chance for success?
