[Q] Nexus 5 Hotspot hack - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone one been about to find a working hotspot hack for the Nexus 5 ? I am on sprint and want to use the hotspot for free. I have tried a few apps and different ROMs but so far nothing has worked.

I am also looking/waiting for something for this.
I imagine that the official CM11 nightlies will have this feature as it worked when I had my HTC One running 10.2, but idk. We'll see...

On stock ROM under setting>wireless and networks>tethering and mobile hot spot. Just click on Portable Wi-Fi hot spot and you're good to go

A couple of ROMs have hotspot built in to them.
Try one of 'em and you should be able to find what you're looking for.

I thinking he's talking about bypassing the tether guard. There's another thread in here with the info you seek.

for real ???? you should work for a sprint call center!

I have tried a few custom ROMs and none of them have worked. Is this something I just need to wait to be added to later builds ? I used my GS3 as a hotspot on custom ROMs with no trouble.

Worked great!!! My sprint N5 hotspot is up and working with WiFi tether router. Thanks everyone here for the help.

I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following SQlite Manager database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet. Regardles this was made for t-mobile it shoudl work for sprint, only way to know is trying; always make a backup just in case.
I hope this helps.

For some reason wifi tether router stopped working for me. Using Nexus 5 on Sprint network. It seems Sprint is some how blocking tether using the app. I have 5 bars with excellent LTE coverage where I am, but every time I try to enable wifi tether router, the phone goes of network data. When I disable wifi tether router, data is re-enabled. It's obvious that Sprint is somehow blocking the tethering through this app somehow. Any one have an clues on how to bypass this?
I was able to test easytether app by mobilestream but you have to have a client side app running all the time. I would much rather find a work around to get wifi tether router working again by bypassing sprint. Thanks for any help!

first off, you responded in a long dead thread. did you read the dates? secondly, thrres no such thing as an app that will bypass your network wanting to get paid. there is some hacking and root needed to try a possibly that might or might not work.

[MOD] Using Skyrocket on T-mobile/AWS Bands

So a lot of people have been PM'ing me in regards to this matter.
There are also a couple of threads lingering around in the General section on both the t-mobile and skyrocket forums which brush on the topic but don't really go into the details.
I decided to post this here as a MOD.
Yes the Skyrocket will support HSPA+/3g on T-mobiles network. How do I know this? I had one and was using it on t-mobile with no problem.
There are a couple radios you can flash to get HSPA+ on the skyrocket:
T-mobile SGH-T989 KID: http://minus.com/mlupRDTvJ#1
T-mobile SGH-T989 VK1: http://minus.com/mlupRDTvJ#4
Telus KJ3: http://minus.com/mlupRDTvJ#2
Here is the Stock Skyrocket radio: http://minus.com/mlupRDTvJ#3
Depending on where you are located/what bands your operator uses I would assume one of these radios would work better than the other.
On a side note a lot of people have just "claimed" that the skyrocket doesn't pick up hspa+. This is not true, it does but you will have to figure out the right ROM/Kernel/Radio combination. I experienced intermittent connectivity on certain skyrocket kernels while running a T-mobile radio etc. Either way I ALWAYS had the ability to connect to hspa+. Most often I would get speeds of between 3-7mbps. I personally used VK1.
When it comes down to the bottom line though, the skyrocket is essentially the same device as the galaxy s2 but with LTE.
IF this helped please hit the thanks button!
I am also using my skyrocket on T-Mobile. I have Juggernaut/Faux 009/VKL1 combo. So far it has been the best combo for me where I get 3-7mbps. The only problem I have it slow upload speeds. Not just for this combo but for all the combos i tried. I am only getting 50-100kbps upload speeds. Any idea why?
*just a heads up, multiupload has been down for weeks already, might wantto change the download links.

i777 have completely different hardware.
But, what you need exactly (ROM, baseband) and why you need it?
if you need your i777 work better on t-mo network, try flash i9100 modems, may be it'll help.
If there will be problems, you may flash back i777 modem
PS: do not forget to make nandroid backup before flashing

Does anyone know if the AT&T Galaxy Note ROMs can be flashed on our phone? The Bell Galaxy Note (also LTE) comes with AWS HSPA+ and LTE out of the box... if it also has the MDM9200 chip and if the radios could be flashed on our phones, this could enable LTE, AT&T 3G, and AWS HSPA all at the same time!
I would assume not due to the resolution etc but the radios....quite possible they could
It works perfectly ! thank you so much ... !! It changes to 4G speed (4G Icon).

LTE Toggle on AT&T Phone - official response from HTC

"I looked into the situation on this and I can verify that there is not a native way to disable LTE on the AT&T version of the One X. While we don't normally recommend this, you may want to check the Play store to see if there's an app that will give you this functionality. Please be aware that if you run into any concerns through the use of such software we can certainly try and offer assistance, but the use of such an app is at your sole discretion. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, and thanks for being a member of the HTC community!"
If enough people report this or ask about this. I am hopeful that they'll add LTE toggle natively in the interface.
They could add a toggle, but....I don't think it would work.
I'm pretty sure that AT&T, whether it be in ther SIMS, or just over the network, force the phones to allow LTE. I don't think that I have even been able to disable 3G on an AT&T device since my Moto Backflip. Ha, if I even could on there. (Though technically, the Backflip was my second device...Aria was the first and I broke it thus had to downgrade
tl;dr The problem is AT&T, not software. Custom ROMs with LTE toggles would have the same issue so I can't see how HTC would be able to fix it either
Someone correct me if I'm an idiot
You can toggle off 3G on the AT&T iPhones. Looks like AT&T just has HTC by the balls (pardon my French). Locked bootloader, presumed kernel release delay....
I'd love to be able to turn off LTE when I don't need it. HSPDA is plenty fast to check email and forums (and way better on the battery).

here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27697880&postcount=1
also if you use ASIA 1.88 the option is also there. with the auto switch. so its ATT being douches
its actually pretty simple why ATT wants to force LTE when they can, it simply means you'll use more data, and the more data you use, the more money they make.
Here's just an example, you open a 10 minute youtube video with 3g, you watch maybe 30 seconds and decide not to watch anymore. You may have downloaded 1-2 minutes worth of streaming data, where as with LTE, in that same 30 seconds, you could have downloaded the entire 10 minutes, thus causing more data usage.
that menu from the gsm hack doesnt work though. or it never worked for me anyway. no matter what option I picked it would just go back to the default
It probably built into at&t kernal to not allow it, in did notice with 1.88 kernal you could.

Now the big question is, how much better is your battery life when you turn off LTE?
Can anyone safely notice an increase that isn't placebo?
Care to test formally, anyone?
You can disable LTE by adding a new APN which uses wap.cingular. This does work on att without any problems. You can find the APN settings here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675879&highlight=cingular+apn
It does make a noticeable difference in battery life, too.

I talked to a couple of Sprint store employees here in Seattle just this afternoon who as yet had not heard of anyone getting it via the OTA stock method. Whereas very close to date ND2 was first announced as released, each of the three stock S5s on which I selected "update now" in settings immediately began that upgrade process, its certainly seems to be a very different situation with this update.
Maybe it wasn't as ready as they'd intended it to be for release on the date they announced (coming up on almost a week ago now)? Doesn't make much sense given that this time Wifi Calling was the only specifically mentioned feature addition. Granted, its a great feature to be getting, but xda devs like sleshepic made that available for us and its been running nicely for weeks now.
I never got the update ota after checking multiple times a day so being impatient lol I odined the tar.

Just downloaded and installed update. Seattle area. Attempting to E-sign the Wifi Calling app 911 TOA but keep getting a network error after a forced automatic reboot directly after installing the update. The interesting thing about setting up the wifi calling app is it opens a self service menu and gives you access to the IOT hidden menus.

I wasn't able to get anywhere past the e signature thing (kept saying network error) until I actually called Sprint and had them add wifi calling as a (free) service on my account. After that, it went through right away.

I let the phone sit overnight and retried the wifi calling E-sign setup and it went right though without a call to Sprint. The caveat to wifi calling is you must provide a legit street address for every wifi network you add for 911 purposes.
I went to settings/system updates just for the heck of it, and had an update waiting(144.29MB). I'm on Boost. Didn't take it so I can catch the Boost/VM tar when it drops to Kies, but thought you all might want to know it's out for Boost too.

Which to me is dumb. It should detect with GPS and only require address if it can't.
How's this any different vs. me driving to another city and calling 911 from my cell phone from inside a building?
The call centers, depending what they support either get:
A) Just phone number with the address that reverses to that number.
B) A and GPS cord, if avil. (sadly many emergency centers don't support this)
C) Approx location based on cell tower triangulation (this is actually more rare to happen)
D) no data returned
At best the app should connect and enable to the WiFi network you select and just work and if possible get location via GPS or pop-up saying no location. It can still do 911 based on IP gelocation.
What happens in an emergency when someone wants to call 911, has 0 service, finds a random open host spot, jumps on it and doesn't have time to go playing with this damn app to put in an address just to call 911 that they could tell the Op the location/address and even if it was incorrect call center they could re-route/transfer.
The Airave I understand, they want to make sure you're not trying to use Sprint service in a non-Sprint area or international etc. which is silly given you could now do it with this app as the only thing it cares about as an addy for e911, which for mine I have an incorrect made up location put in and it accepted lmao.

Tutorial- how to tether ps4 unrestricted

Would anyone be interested in having this? If there's support I'll write it up, but if not don't wanna waste my time...chime in if you think this would be a good tutorial.
Edit- i want to be sure to give credit on this to the original tmo upsell page that i can't seem to find now to link at the moment smh that's what made me investigate after reading reports in that thread that it no longer worked, but seems it does, the major difference- i think- being to specify another user agent, don't just strip it null, and I'm working on tweaking the setup because fiddler4 isn't handling the certificate requests quite right, which causes you to have to babysit it in the case of large downloads where the same http tunnel has to be opened for an extended period of time, so once i have the links out I'll post the planned "tutorial", and i think in the meantime i might just document my process on getting the glitches out of fiddler4- errr should i say, adjusting it's handling of such- for the sake of someone else who may be in my position and want to use a wireless connection for their ps4. In the UK tmo had signed agreements with Sony to make data available to people who purchase the system because Sony knows how important it is to have data access. No one wants to shell out 500+ bucks on a system and then find out that system could eat as much as 300gb of data in a month. Even how cable service in some places have caps in place and throttling- like if you're unfortunate enough to have hughesnet smh not that 1st person stuff is gonna run with 1500-2000ms ping time averages, but there are still games that aren't as ping intensive that'll work fine, and the large file downloads are much better than years ago, onboard routing on the birds has made lots of difference. It's still inherently ping challenged, but other than that it's really pretty good- but the usage caps are miserable, along with others who have dsl or other smaller regional providers, it can get excessive- buy 3 or 4 60 buck games in one month and see if updates alone don't cost ya 50gb+! So the idea, yes, is to swap out all the http headers on the fly so that not just browsers from a pc are able to spoof the packet header, but ALL traffic, irregardless of its' source- so even your ps4 or Xbox one- as long as you have a pc (I'm sure a mac could probably be used, but I'm using a win10 pc, so that's what I'm writing on) to put between the console/tv/pc/bluray player/you get it and your wireless device you can replace the header of every packet that passes thru and make tmo's systems see the connection as an android chrome device instead of, say, a PS4
More to come.........

Alrighty, well give me a bit to type it up with all the links etc...it requires you to connect your device to your pc via USB and enable the tether, then connect your ps4 directly to your pc with a crossover cable, bridge those two connections, run Fiddler4 on the pc with a few settings enabled that strip the user agent string from every http header and replace it. It's basically an update to the thread that already exists that explains how to do it using the old fiddler 2...but i guess people no longer were able to make it work for whatever reason, but i got the new fiddler 4 running great! I'm currently in excess of my 7gb of hotspot data by about 80gb and i hadn't been able to get the ps4 to download the black ops 3 update for like a week- Netflix would work on the ps4, but downloads from the notification page would get throttled and there wasn't any good way to get around it without getting rid of that user agent string. Vpn is too slow and/or expensive, so I'm thrilled i found this workaround still works with some updated software! i haven't been able to play black ops 3 multiplayer for over a week because i needed this 9gb update and couldn't download it! Smh lol but all is well! Fiddler handles it like a champ! Not the most convenient thing to have to connect everything with wires and put a laptop between the ps4 and the device, but it sure does work!

What kind of plan do you have with T-Mobile? I have only 1GB of data plan at the moment but if I tether anything over 1GB of data then I'll be throttled down to a very slow speed.

Yeah, it doesn't really help you unless you have unlimited device data and only measured hotspot data....

Well I've got to tell ya, it's been REALLY hit or miss, fiddler 4 WILL remove or replace your useragent string in the ip header but that's only getting you past the automated checking, but post analysis may still get you dinged depending on what exactly you're doing....

Talk and Surf

Does anyone know if you can talk and surf on the internet at the same time? I know you could on the Note 2 but not the Note 5.

Its a mystery. They told me managers bring it up in thier meetings. But not sure why the wait.
Probably going to be a while. I'm on the Samsung Galaxy S5, one of the first phone with volte. It's been over 2 years and still we don't have it yet.

This was the one thing I disliked when leaving verizon 2 years ago.. I had it on my S3, came to Sprint on the Note 4 and none. I was a little pissed, but they kept saying it was coming and here we are.

That's Sprint's usual answer to missing features - "it will roll out soon."
If you are having network or signal issues, it's always, "We were working on towers in your area".

True at least my bill is smaller than with Verizon. Network has been decent too.
They let it be known early they were doing the complete lte roll out.... and when that was complete they would go back and add the volte ...

Sprint would always tell me I should be getting LTE and I never did. Then, I got my Note 7 and my area is covered in LTE. It's just my old device (One m7) didn't receive all the available LTE bands. The network really has come a long way.

Well at least it's better now.
If you have Google Voice, Hangouts Dialer installed and don't mind calling people from your Google Voice number you now have a temporary work around

I just came from a Note 3 that still does Talk & Surf. Took it for granted until yesterday. The only tricky part is being consistent using the Dialer once Google Voice is set up. Hope this helps although I'd prefer to have what Verizon has already without any workarounds..

I came from the Note 3 as well. I thought there was something wrong with my Note 7 until I saw this thread. That sucks.

It does. It's mind blowing how they make new phones & leave out the best parts of the previous. Wifi calling and the Voice record app is gone too. They have a recorder Within Samsung Notes but not the same. Even the Edge had the version that can type what you say. Handy for musicians or taking notes.. Patiently waiting for root, ad blocker and Exposed would be the ****
