Battery from 74% to 0% in 1 second - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I experienced a weird behaviour...
I was using my Moto G and it was with 74% battery. I connected it to my macbook using the usb cable and when I disconnected it the battery instantly dropped to 0% and the phone turned off!

After that I charged it again and so far so good. But I wonder what could have caused this behaviour?
I have never saw something like that before.

I had the same problem a few hours ago. It suddenly dropped and shut down itself. I started the phone again and it is still at 1% since 5 hours. I guess this is related to a bad battery calibration because I've unplugged it during the first charge for a moment (I have the phone since yesterday).

i used to have the exact same issue with my Galaxy S2. it would freeze and then reboot or i would have to force restart only to lose about 50% battery. when i sent it back to Samsung, i think they replaced a circuit inside.

It's a new phone it could be broken

Went to sleep last night, phone at 78%, woke up, phone dead. It won't charge either.

Maybe you should send it in to get it looked at by someone

I'll be sending it back for a return, but worried about private data on the phone that I can't clear.
edit: I managed to boot it up and do a factory reset.

Got a refund.

I could always get another. The issue may haunt the device over time, it's not worth it for such a day old phone.
Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0100 using xda app-developers app

I had exactly the same issue yesterday.
I had the phone attached to my Win 7 laptop with USB cable (in USB debugging mode)
When I took the cable out the battery went from 52% to 0%.
I was using the white USB cable that came with the phone, have the official Motorola Device Manager which installed Motorola device drivers v 6.3.0. The USB ports are all v3.0
As this issue happened to 2 of us when detaching from USB ports, could something weird be happening like the phones battery is somehow being drained and trying to charge the laptop's battery? Or could the USB cable be faulty?

I believe it is an adb / usb related bug in the stock firmware. A new rom will probably fix this. Unless someone wants to report it to Motorola.

You guys should tweet it to Motorola on Twitter, it happened to 3 people already and they haven't yet released it in many countries

Same issue. Happened to me tonight.

I bought mine yesterday from Tesco. It has been charging on my PC for 2 hours now ,and won`t power on.The battery isnt even warm.
Will leave it on till this afternoon,if its still not working I will have to return it.
EDIT
Just tried it on a colleagues Kindle charger and its charging OK.

Hello there,
today i experienced the same issue, the battery dropped to 1% with no reason at all. It's not even charging anymore (I did restart it a few times).
I tend to replace it, but if this is a software bug, will this help at all?

If you guys can get a logcat of it we can see if it's hardware or software. And send it to Motorola maybe.

There are too bugs realated with battery, this are worry me for buy it.

Just happened to me again. Phone was on for several hours and most of the time connected to my mobile battery. Phone was at 100% when I got home and turned off ~45 min after.

Return it.

S/W Upgrade!

Well maybe it is here?!!!
Woke up this am and my phone battery was dead. Connected it to the charger last night but didn't realize the charger was unplugged. So I connected it to my laptop via USB and went about the morning activities.
I just looked over and on the screen it says

Been that way for 10 minutes. I'll keep you posted.
Seriously? WTF. Hmm, I wonder if it could look like anything in this guys post:

Notice he changed it to false alarm and request that it be deleted. OTA updates don't automagically start, you get informed and a choice how to download them.
yeah you may wanna take this down asap
Yeah, unless you get prompted to update while your phone is on, I doubt its legit.

That was the only thing curious to me was that I hit the power button to make sure it was charging and it was. I never turned it on though. Looked over again when I heard the USB connect sound from my laptop and saw the message. Still on the screen at this point.
Not sure.....
Such thread should be locked down ASAP because it's just another "cry wolf"!
Pull your battery or it will stay on this screen. You fat fingered some buttons is all that happened.

Happened to me once to. I turned on the phone and got the software upgrade screen. Left in on all night, finally reset (it still had the screen), low and behold, no update.
Not sure why the screen came up.
so when you went to start this thread and typed s/w upgrade into the thread title box and you got the little search window that opens up and warns you not to post a new thread without checking those out first you did what exactly?

This is not even remotely normal. It's likely that either your phone or your usb cable is defective or damaged.
I'd get a warranty replacement...

It's used to flash custom operating systems (roms), kernels, etc. You should take it back to store if you just got it a couple days ago and get a replacement.
Bring your cable with you so they can test at the store if it's the cable causing it to go into download mode or if the phone itself is the problem. At any rate, you paid too much money to have a buggy phone and if this is happening there are likely other problems with your device. Replace it.
Thanks everyone for the input. it wound up being a detective cable causing the issue i was having.

I know this is old, buy WHAT! Defective cable. Damn there are some people who would have bought that lol
What I mean is that cord.....defective or not for charging...it is pretty much a jig. It is what people use to recover their phones when they have bricked them (funnily enough "bricked" is no longer bricked anymore....hmm I wonder how many people threw out phones thinking they could never work again?)

I'm thinking it was a cable for factory use in development at Samsung and got packaged up by mistake.
EDIT: Also wanted to add, "bricked" is still "bricked". It's just that people "soft-brick" and think it's a brick, when usually it's just a boot loop. Hard bricks do happen, unfortunately...

Verizon SIII 32GB Blue Brief Review Video

Guys earlier I posted an unboxing video in another thread. That video is right here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BryoOlaWQaU&feature=plcp
Then I spent the next 4 or 5 hours trying to get the freaking thing activated. That finally happened, but I haven't had much time with the phone. Anyways, here's a quick video showing the boot up, and some speed tests on 4G LTE. This phone is beast! (it may be sideways for a bit but I've rotated it to the right in Youtube, sometimes it just takes a while)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wovT50uGfLw&feature=plcp
Feel free to ask questions, I can try to post more videos over the next couple days but my schedule is literally booked for the next 2 days so I'll do what I can.
Good job

It's looking like the Verizon version is going to have sweet sweet battery life!
The phone starts at about 50% and I still have stellar life out of that! I had rebooted it and connected it via usb to try and get adb shell. Otherwise it would show nearly 20hrs of battery at this point!

Have they fixed that 34ma battery drain issue yet? Officially? I'm a nexus dude but seriously considering returning it and getting in on one of these s3's. Just switched to Verizon and I love, love, love the network. Haven't been with vzw since '07.
I'd also like to know if there is still the bleeding/weeping/leakage of the back lights on the white version? Like there was on the white galaxy s 2.
Thanks.

I'm not aware of this battery drain issue you speak of. If it exists on my phone, I can obviously obviously with it. The cell standby numbers are way too high, especially considering I was on full LTE coverage all night. My epic4g had a similar issue and it was fixed via software fairly quickly.
Mine is blue so I can't comment on your other question. Yes, the Verizon network is AWESOME!

"The cell standby" that is the Battery drain issue he is referencing, it is not really a "real" drain issue, more a reporting issue.

[Q] Random shutdowns / battery drops on AOKP Jelly Bean

I have been experiencing irregular shutdowns and battery drops with the recent AOKP Jelly Bean ROMS. The phone will suddenly shutdown. It won't start up without connecting it to the charger again, although the battery can be fully charged before the sudden shutdown. After connecting it to the charger I am able to start the phone up again.
Sometimes the battery shows up as somewhere between 20-70% charged, sometimes it shows 0%. Usually if I reboot the phone one more time, it shows the original charging level again. I have seen people posting about similar issues, but never found a solution.
I am attaching a logcat, dmesg and kmsg file from right after a second reboot after a sudden shutdown (sudden shutdown while 100% full battery; attaching to charger; starting phone up again; battery shows 0% charged; restart phone again while attached to charger; battery shows almost 100% charged). Also attached a screenshot of the battery usage screen and all relevant version numbers from "About Phone".
Anyone any ideas? (Can't post to development forums yet, so posting it here )

Have you tried a full wipe and install, it might help. Sometimes it does or maybe the battery is going bad? Have you tried a different battery?
Check to see if battery wiggles in housing if so you can stabilize it with a wedge of paper. This might stop the reboots.

I had not tried the paper wedge. I tried that this morning and experienced another random reboot rather quickly.

I have not yet tried a new battery though.

Good point. I haven't seriously looked at underclocking, but I think the ROM comes like that by default. What's the stock freq. foe the Sensation again... I'll look that up.
Edit: ok, just set the min and max frequency to 1242MHz under ROM Control / Performance. Left the governor set to badass. We'll see how that's going to work out.

I had same issue with desire, after 1 year battery caused random shutdowns and reboots (more than a lot of hw problems, fixed after 3 times by HTC support... but this is another story..)
Now, with Sensation is the same (in less than 1 year!).

In the meantime I have also been in contact with HTC about this issue. I reverted all the way back to stock, which wasn;t such a hassle as I thought it would be.
HTC support gave me a whole bunch of stuff to try, all of which I had already tried of course Last resort was to factory reset the phone without the SIM and SD card in it (through the recovery menu). After that I started the phone without SIM and SD cards in it. During step two of the setup wizard the phone died. As this has (so far) never happened while having the phone connecte dto the charger, HTC support now suggests that it IS the battery. We'll see after I receive the extra battery I guess.
Actually, I thought the aforementioned test was a good one to share, as that way one can be absolutely sure it is the battery/phone. Still very interesting that the first occurrence of the issue coincides with starting using the Jelly Bean ROMs.

Well folks, seems that a new battery solved all my problems. Finally Iam able to use my phone again....

So, is there anyone know how to resolve this problem?

Text is in something I can't read (probably Taiwanese ? ) but from what I can tell, the CPU of the phone stays at 100% all the time.
There's just no way the screen could use that much power when it's turned OFF the whole night, unless you have a defective board, which would need to be replaced.
If you didn't install any apps that could cause this (meaning this happened as soon as you bought the phone) it appears to be a problem with the firmware's power management, meaning it has none
Flash another stock or custom firmware and that should fix it, just make sure its any other firmware than the one you currently have.
That's my opinion, based on what I can see and on my experience (I'm not a developer).

I'm glad you managed to get it to work. But if rebooting it fixes the problem, then it might be because of a bad ROM. Try a re-flash or take it back to HTC and explain it to them.
Over-charging the phone will kill the battery and it might even cause it to inflate or blow-up. That's how accidents happen
ASK
hey, is battery saver app in PS works perfectly?? or just make android laggy.
Dude , rebooting is not a perfect solution . Just changes the battery with an other one . Some times your changed battery will makes this all mistakes .
Did you oveclocked your htc?? Ovrer overclocking may cause this problem . Well Check and install a new kernal .

You can try powering off the phone, removing the battery for at least 10-15 seconds and then put it back in and see the results (that's similar to the wipe battery stats option in recoveries). If that doesn't work, the only sonution is to flash another rom, whether it's a stock or a custom one.
Use greenify so the battery won't drain fast

I used the greenify for three days from then, and I found that's helpful, thanks for the suggest.
