Simple Programs for Your Android Development
From the result of boredom, I've created these programs in CMD to speed along the process of development, if you will. Instructions are clearly stated throughout the program, so nothing should go wrong.
I would love to hear feedback. Let me know if there are problems anyone is encountering with the program, or it there are ways to make it better. Thanks, good luck, and happy developing.
For feedback, email me: [email protected]
vAndroid ROM FlasherA program to do your ROM flashing for you, so to speak. This program will do all the steps to make things simpler for you, aside from the actual true flashing of the ROM which you do in the recovery.
vAndroid Recovery FlasherA program to do your recovery flashing for you. This program does every step involved in flashing a new recovery. No worrying about typing the wrong command into CMD when doing these things manually.
vAndroid HTC Bootloader UnlockerA program to unlock your HTC's bootloader. Note, this is for HTC devices ONLY.

Good job. I like to put things like this together for my personal use... To speed things along. Like with smali/backsmali and apktool, I put together some .bat files to quickly get from point A to point D.
Again, like I mentioned at the beginning, I typically just build stuff like this for my own personal use/laziness. I do appreciate having to type things out initially as that taught me valuable lessons from the command line.
Nevertheless, good job. Glad to see people always innovating.

I had originally done the same thing, just made these to speed along my process and I know its nice to have things like this so I thought I'd put it up here for other people to use. Thanks for your word, I appreciate it.

First off, this is where I got all the below info: (kudos and good job!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
Ok. So I just rooted my Thunderbolt using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=552281&d=1301123842
This download:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=28H4U0QS
And this download (if windows 64 bit):
http://www.mediafire.com/?nbm7bpa0lnqp3si
Download the megaupload files first and unrar them. If using Windows 64 bit, download the mediafire files and unrar them into the Thunderbolt Root folder that was just unrared and replace the files it asks to replace.
Use the PDF instructions to start.
A couple of corrections which I came across...may not be the same for all rooters:
First,,,make sure you take off "fast boot" as suggested.
For step one, I had to redo step one for reboot to go forward but that worked as stated.
In "Before Step 2", under the "Note", you will see "After flashing hbooteng.nb0 your phone will reboot". Actually, for me, it was the next step of flashing the "PG05IMG.zip" which it then rebooted. These kind of things get you a bit worried at the moment if everything doesn't go as written
At the end of the rooting, when you "Click on Step 3", My phone immediately rather than the phone sitting there as stated, showed that "You have been successfully rooted...congratulations" -- without rebooting the phone. What I did was the suggestion to close the rooter.exe and restart it and then click on step three again and Presto, same message but the phone rebooted into root
The suggestion to go to clockwork mod is go to all programs and open ROM Manager and do the same...haha...I couldn't find "clockwork"..I was looking for it for about 2 minutes All went well, all permission ran and I rebooted and all is good!
All in all, nice directions and pretty user friendly...Thanks all!!!
thanks for the notes im thinking of rooting my phone and all the extras of people doing it and saying how good it is helps alot when trying to decide if i really want to do it or not.

Forgive me for intruding, but there are already excellent guides on how to root in the development page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=943
Please route people here, as I am sure this is based off of Team AndIRC's work (including, but not limited to jcase, the original poster of the root method.) and it in no way credits them

Hello everyone. It has been a year since i bought my Captivate and i just put my hands on this awesome device (Infuse 4G).
I feel a little retarded as i completely forgot who i donated to on this forum for helping me to unlock my captivate when there was no soft for it in the market yet. I would like to thank you again whoever it was.
Anyway, I would like to ask you to help me to get rid of At&T crapware and get a nice clean fast rom. I will also need instruction for a total retard. Flashing a phone is not an everyday business for me.
Thanks

Which zip have you downloaded and extracted?
Have you read any instructions that are all over this site and many others?
There are literally video tutorials that go step by step from stock out of the box, to rooted and installing a ROM.
Search is your friend. Your best bet is to do some reading before you attempt to install a custom ROM. It's actually quite simple to do, hell I have upgraded my ROM while driving from the hanger at work over to the airport terminal.
However, if you don't know what you are doing, and aren't familiar with the concepts, you can and most likely will end up with a nice shiny brick. (soft brick most likely)
So, find the INFUSED rom thread and start reading and looking at the tutorials he has posted before you take another step. Then, and only then, if you still have questions, people will be very happy to help you out.
Also, as for unlock - if you read through the various threads on this forum, there are two methods covered for obtaining the SIM unlock code for our phones. One requires your phone to be rooted already, one is a script that roots the phone, extracts the code, and then optionally undoes the rooting.
Thanks a lot guys. I really should slow down and read stuff properly. Will let u know how im doing. Thanks again for being there.

Good insight.

Greetings,
I am looking for an easy to understand method of root.
I have read the new user thread. I am afraid with this so called "easy" method for beginners, there is a lot of jargon used that I simply don't understand.
For example in the thread for easy root, I am lost at step #2 where I am instructed to:
"Note that adb is required.
Push misc.img, busybox, and psnueter using the following commands:"
I don't know what adb is let alone how to push misc.img, busybox and psnueter.
Can someone please point me to the instructions for absolute morons to this process like me.
Thanks in advance.

Android adb http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
which is in the sdk http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
You dont really need to know what the other tools are listed do, you just need to do what it says with them and the tools are linked in the thread you're reading to download I assume. If they aren't, then read through the manual method that is stickied in the developer's forum. A link for the tools (misc.img, busybox, and psnueter) can be found there.
I was a little nervous at first myself. I read over the directions several times and then found some information on how to get adb installed and working. Once I got that step understood the actual rooting process was super easy. You can cut and paste all the commands to ensure you don't typo. Just make sure to validate your checksums to save any potential headaches. My first attempt at it took about 20 minutes and I had absolutely ZERO issues.
It is well worth your time and effort. It is also far better to use this method than the easy root 1 steps as you will gain a slightly better understanding of how your phone works and what steps you can take when you inevitably mess something up flashing ROMS, mods and radios
Thanks for the quick reply.
I am not nervous, I just don't understand what any of this is.
I don't know what adb is or how to use it.
I don't know what copy and pasting the commands means.
I certainly don't know what "validate checksums" are.
I realize I am coming across as a comlete shmo, but explaining how to do this with more computer jargon doesn't clarify the process.
I really need instructions for dooshbags like me.
Thanks in advance.
There are also videos on YouTube showing JCases method and adb setup. I would link but I'm on my phone but it shouldn't be to hard to find.

There is no "easy", reliable way to root sans ADB and command lines. You will need to know this stuff before you try to root. You're going to need ADB in any event. If learning it isn't knowledge you desire, you shouldn't root your phone. For terms, you should refer to the dictionary stickied at the top of the forum. The best way to learn is to get the Android SDK, set it up, make sure your drivers are there, then play with ADB. Do simply stuff like check your serial number, the md5 of files on your SDcard, and harmless stuff like that. If you've got any questions along the way, feel free to PM me any time. I'm here often. And I'm usually faster than hunting through forums or the internet.

From what i think if u dont want the adb command line ****s you should try the software named "z4root". It automatically roots your phone.
Worked for me. And i think itz the easiest method available.
After installing the apk.
Open the application, click PERMANENT ROOT,
Then dnt let your phone sleep or lock itself, wait for about 10 minutes,
After the process reboot ypur phone.
Voila, you are rooted ..
Am new to the forums. please guide me..
Thanks and sorry for my poor english. Hope you like this.

I would not recommend "easy" root methods, since there is greater room for error. Understanding ADB will help you in the long run

I know z4root doesn't work for any modern HTC. You can have permanent root without s-off. The only way to do that is through ADB, using an engineering hboot, and applying various exploits. All the "easy" root methods are just scripts that do what jcase's guide lays out. And unlike the guide, if something goes south, you're lost and screwed. I think it would be safe to say "easy" roots have probably bricked more phones than anything else.

Yep, and the past guy to go that route, after being warned it was highly prone to failure, had it fail. Then he came back looking for help, but nobody could because what went wrong wasn't at all clear. Just not wise.
Ive used the one click root four times with no issues. Four diffrent tb's from 3 diffrent states. 2 of them had alrdy takin the ota's. Dont have the link handy but if was a time saver. Though a half arse understanding of the method helps avoid issues. Ill post the link when i get home.

I rooted mine manually first. As you said in a previous post most "easy" roots are just scripts. That's what the one I used on my wife's was. I was following along the text of the batch file as I was running it so that if something happened I would know at what part of the script I was at. I had no problems with it though.
I'll agree that I could see where if someone where to run into a problem using script without any knowledge of what the script was doing they would probably end in a very bad place.
I think the obvious was missed in this thread: The OP is not a candidate for rooting. It's a risky task for experienced users and a non-task for noobs. He hasn't even stated a valid need for rooting the phone.

ADB "Android Development Bridge" Simply put just helps you develop apps and fix bugs. (In this case, you will use this to reinstall Android without a locked bootloader (a.k.a. S-Off) (the bootloader is code that is run when you first turn on your device that tells Android to run).
You don't have to know how to use ADB, but you must install it on your computer.
As far as copying and pasting commands go, the tutorial that you choose to visit will tell you to type this command ex: cp image.zip/sdcard/
You will just copy this code out of your browser (FireFox/Internet Explorer/Chrome/etc.) and paste it into a command line.
Your command line will depend on what operating system you use on your pc. Ex for Windows, you will use "Command Prompt" or on Linux/MAC you will use "Terminal".
As far as validation checksums goes, it is used to make sure that the file that you downloaded is 100% the same file that the developer made.
Basically, open up your command line and type (without quotes) "md5 image.zip" also, make sure you change to "image.zip" with whatever/where you file is at.
I would be more specific with these instructions I'd I knew what OS (operating system) you are using on your computer is.
After you type in the command and hit enter, it will spit out a long string of gibberish. Just make sure this "checksum" is the EXACT same as whatever the devolver put in the tutorial you are following.
As far as putting together an idiot proof guide, you will have to forgive us, but I don't think the people here want to have a bunch of people here flooding the forums with very basic questions that have been answered already on the internet. However, don't let that stop you from asking questions. Just make sure you help yourself first (Google what you don't understand) and then ask for clarification.
P.S. I claim touchscreen amnesty for any typos.

I want to start looking into learning linux and android development and I need a few starter tips.
First off, i need a linux system.
-Should I buy a laptop preloaded with linux or create a boot disk to run on one of my windows computers?
---If I should purchase a preloaded system, what are the details on what I should get?
------I found this site with different systems but I have absolutely no experience with linux so I'm not sure whats good (for android development)
---If I should create a boot disk, could I get a link to a download or some easy step by step instructions on making one?
Next, I'll need to know what programs I'm going to need
-I've use apktool in the past to decomp/recomp but it looks pretty complicated to set up (For someone that has absolutely no knowledge. I'm sure once I do it once, it will be easy to recreate)
---So could I get a step by step tutorial on setup and use of apktool with download links and such?
-I'm hoping to be able to create market apps once I get pretty good at it
---What programs/files will I need to get started on that? (links please)
---Could I have a link to some kind of tutorial on creating apps (functionality of different files/commands and how to incorporate them into apps)
Basically what I'm hoping for is an all out guide to getting linux, learning linux, then learning to create android apps.
All help, no matter how small, is much appreciated.
Thanks in advanced,
~Tivo

There is no complete guide for Android programming, but I can point you in the right direction. You can install Ubuntu on a windows PC using virtual box. All the instructions to do so can easily be found using google. If you do not know java or c++ then you will at least need to get comfortable with both. From here its up to you to learn as much as you can by searching and learning and then practicing, there is a ton of info out there and too many different techniques for there to be a simple all inclusive guide. stuff is always changing too. It can be done though, because I taught myself a lot with just using google and xda forums. Good luck

Okay this is REALLY freakin' irritating!!
I have been itching to cook up my own ROM in the kitchen...BUT I CAN'T EVEN USE IT!
I have tried installing it, multiple times (deleting everything each time to start fresh), and follow all instructions to the "T", and every single time I open Cygwin (after putting in the kitchen and renaming it) and "cd kitchen" enter "./menu", it always comes up saying "Error: The application 'gcc' is not installed - the kitchen will not function properly without it. Ensure you did not miss a step during installation! Refer to the Android Kitchen FAQ...", etc. (I could swear it installed devel > gcc when I installed Cygwin. Even used the Install all option and stuff...)
Checked out the FAQ and everything, but I still can't find it! Everything I try just doesn't work! Can someone please help?? (thank you)

Well, yes. It is.... I just figured it would be a lot more convenient to do everything on Windows instead.
There are times when it seems like things that were designed for Ubuntu don't really seem to work on the zorin distro. In this case, it probably will. I'm not really sure why I can't effectively connect to my phone though when in Zorin...maybe because there is a Kies for linux? I dunno...
I suppose I could try to install it though.
But anyways, more to the point! If cygwin/android kitchen was designed to also work in Windows XP/Vista/7, then why am I getting this error, and how do I fix it?
R: [Q] Android Kitchen "gcc not installed" error
Thats why i use kubuntu. Though i can't answer your question, i do know ubuntu and windows hate each other, getting that stuff to work is gonna probab be a pain.
If zorin has got problems try emulating a small os (so u dont waste too much time) based off linux (lucid puppy linux) and see if that works.
I wouldve thought people would also be modding android stuff directly on windows rather than emulating ubuntu stuff...after all android is open source.

Okay. Thanks for your suggestions. I may try and either do it on zorin, or repartition with kubuntu or something.
Too bad I can't do it in Windows...
Yeah, it's dumb that we still can't directly modify Android from Windows and have to use Linux. Well, actually, not as much "dumb" as inconvenient. Linux is free, yet it's different. I think we should be able to do it anywhere due to Android being open source.
Oh well... I don't understand why no-one else is having this problem. They have the guides for it on here (beginner's guides to making ROMs and stuff like that), and it seems as though nobody else has had this problem...or nobody even uses Windows. orz
Hopefully someone else will attempt to answer my question. thanks though. <
R: [Q] Android Kitchen "gcc not installed" error
well many developers are also pc fanatics and experiment new oses and grow to like open soyrce/free ones more than windows. many java devs use linux oses. Thats how devs roll. I use c and i like windows so i do it all in windows, but i know the editor/debugging programs are better on ubuntu than those available for windows....still....windows is...too much to shut down at times...

well many developers are also pc fanatics and experiment new oses and grow to like open soyrce/free ones more than windows. many java devs use linux oses. Thats how devs roll. I use c and i like windows so i do it all in windows, but i know the editor/debugging programs are better on ubuntu than those available for windows....still....windows is...too much to shut down at times...

You're probably right. I'm sure I'll be able to get used to it eventually, when I become a full developer. For now though, it's the learning curve. XD
Haha, yeah. That's good though. Windows is definitely enjoyable. (though I can't say much for W8. Ugh.)
So uh, I guess the Android Kitchen definitely works here in Zorin. Went to the menu without any problems. Funny still how it doesn't work in Windows....
You know, I'd probably have just skipped the whole kitchen thing and gone straight to development from source...but I'm not running on a x64 system, and therefore can't work on ICS and JB. :c
Soon though...very soon I will have all the parts to build my new computer, and not have to use this low-power laptop. >m>

(thank you)

Well, if I could go back in time 3 years I would be able to try and help you...I just tried it on Windows 10 here and everything works.
So, follow the instructions as far as even the cygwin_install.txt they provided. You should make sure you install /just/ the gcc-core and gcc-g++ when it tells you to tick the gcc (do not get the "cygwin gcc", idk if that did it, but just get the normal gcc). Follow all the others as well; far as I could tell the linux-util wasn't actually in utils (core instead I think?) but was already ticked, so don't worry about it unless it isn't.
After everything is done, make sure java is good to go and all, and cd to the kitchen location (just put the files in a new file, C:/kitchen/) and change directory to that. Then do the ./menu and it should work....
Also don't bump super old posts, not good. c: Either way I hope this helps. Real simple.
I really have no use for the kitchen anymore, since my GS3 gets CM nightlies (up to marshmallow? Wat!) and I have a Nexus 5X anyway so it's all gucci. But either way...yeah. It works to my knowledge.
Cheers~

before ur comment
I found my answer with try and try..!!
just setup cygwin again and saearch(gcc) and enable to install.
next ,another error and ...
THX for ur comment.
by the way how to create custom recovery for galaxy?
I'm glad to hear it's working for you! Hope you have great fun with it like I did. ^-^
And for the custom recovery...I say it's not really worth it unless you're really serious and can code. Not sure myself how one would make such a thing that has that access, you probably should ask somebody who's actually made them. Otherwise I strongly recommend either Team Win Recovery Project or ClockworkMod. (I use ClockworkMod, but most say twrp is better)
^-^
