[Q] Network Mode - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
In the Setting/Network Mode, there is LTE/3G/2G selection and due to unavailable LTE on my area I would like to switch to 3G preferred.
Each time I chose 3G network, it will show "Change the network operating mode" in the Network Mode, if I choose either LTE or 2G it will stay as it is
I read from the forum, suggested using "*#*#*4636#*#*" >> phone info, choose WCDMA only, but it will reset back when phone is reboot.
Is there anyway to permanent this WCDMA mode even after reboot?
Thank you.

Turn off 3g on the fly

So far my Touch Pro has been great, but the battery life has been a bit lacking.
I'm wondering if there is a program which can turn on and off 3G easily and quickly, but without rebooting the phone, so you can turn on 3G when you want to surf the web for 10-15 minutes, but turn it off for the majority of the day to conserve battery.
Any ideas?
Regards
If your ROM has Band Selection enabled, go to Settings -> Phone -> Band and you can choose GSM (2G) or UMTS (3G)
What do I change? Under Select Network Type there's Auto, GSM, or WCDMA
or under Select your GSM/UTMS band there's Auto, GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100), GSM(1900+850)+UTMS(1900+850) or UTMS(2100+800)
At the moment both are on auto. Which do I want for just GSM and which would I want for 3G when I want it on?
Thanks for the reply
you would want Select Network Type to be set to GSM for GSM/EDGE only, and WCDMA for UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA.
(the other setting is to choose which frequencies you're using)
It would appear that there's exactly the app I was looking for which turns 3G on and off. It's here

How do I select UMTS/WCDMA mode only?

Well guys I am a newbie to the Android world!!
On my earlier Nokia I used to have three options for the Network Mode under the Phone Settings, viz. , Dual Mode, UMTS, GSM. Since in my area the 3G signal is a bit weak I used to select UMTS only, so that the phone doesn't switch over to 2G automatically.
However, in my android device (Samsung GT-I5503) the only option under the Mobile Networks which is anything similar to a Network Mode selection is the Use Only 2G networks checkbox. I believe it disables Dual Mode and allows GSM network only, in the Android device. So Android Gurus and Forum Moderators, do you guys know of any method or software which can select 3G network only!!
Please help me guys as the 3G reception in my network is a bit weak, Android doesn't switch over to 3G!!
Oh and BTW, I'm getting a really good 2G signal. The Signal Bar is 4/4 most of the time!!
@Mods: Could you please change the title of the thread to "How do I select UMTS/WCDMA only, on Samsung Galaxy 5 (GT-I5503)?"

lock your infuse to cdma

Dial *#*#4636#*#* go into phone information scroll down and choose wcdma only and your done default is GSM/WCDMA auto (PRL)

please excuse my ignorance, but what would be the purpose of this?
so that it dosent jump around from 3g 2g if its auto and your not using data it automatically defaults to 2g i think to save battery then switches to 3g oir hsdpa 3.5g or what att calls 4g on demand this keeps it locked on wcdma or 4g to my knowledge

seems like it reverts back to auto after a reboot
This makes the phone work on Verizon, right?

See that's what I thought too. ATT = GSM, Verizon/Sprint = CDMA.

Mine goes back to auto as soon as I back out of the menu. Am I doing something wrong by using the back button?
wouldn't this, by locking it, render the phone useless when traveling out of area that support that network?

I found this here in the forum someone posted and it worked for me thanks for him.

Here's an alternate method I puzzled out (and then afterward discovered it was already posted in thread 751237. It's a bit faster and has the advantage of surviving flight mode; still gets reset upon restart.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#*).
This brings up the Band selection menu which you can also access from the above method by dialing *#*#197328640#*#* then going into DEBUG SCREEN > PHONE CONTROL > NETWORK CONTROL.
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
To switch back, go to *#*#2263#*#* and select [1] AUTOMATIC > Select GSM &WCDMA All Bands > Menu key > END.
Something else I'm trying out is switching the acquisition order so when it is in "dual" mode, it'll try GSM first. Even so, it will still switch to 3g if there's enough signal. Seems to help keep it on 2G though, when it would otherwise cling to a faint 3g signal with 0-1 bars.
To do that, go into the NETWORK CONTROL menu (see above) then
Select [4] AQUISITION ORDER (yes they misspelled it)
Select [2] GSM->UMTS
Select "Select ACQ_ORDER_GSM_FIRST" (at least they abbreviated it correctly)
Menu key > END
This option does not get reset upon phone restart.

I did this and now my sms or text messaging don't work help
I had this happen too, but I didn't use the above method. Don't know what happened, but when I checked message settings, I had no number under "Message Center" did a quick google search and found an ATT number "+13123149810"...now it works again.
Did u call the number
Never mind i fixed it.but now in my network type it says umts is that faster then hsdpa and are there any other number sequences i can use to tweak my phone
I'm getting RAT restricted, which I got on my Vibrant but never my Captivate...
How can I change to show the different bands?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
wcdma and cdma have nothing to do with each other. wcdma is also known as umts, the base part of 3g (and 4g when hspa+). hspa is a protocol that runs on top of this cell technology providing higher data speeds. gprs (known as edge, and some times called gsm) is 2g. you can turn one or another off so the phone does not seek and connect to both services, which could save battery life. even though ive yet to see my phone find less than 3g/4g in houston, i still dont turn it off, just in case.

[Q] WanHu ROM 2G/3G switching?

So I finally jumped in and got the WanHu ROM installed with M's v5 patch. This thing is really nice now, hopefully it will stay that way even after I reinstall some of my apps.
One thing that I've noticed is that the ability to use only 2G networks is gone. It used to be an option under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks. Any chance that may be coming back?
I know some people would probably think I'm crazy to be asking that, but in my experience the batter life was pretty much double that of what I was getting on 3G, so I'd use that mode sometimes.
Thanks for all the good work on the WanHu ROM.
You can turn off the 3g at Settings >> Wireless networks >> Data Network settings & there is also a 3g widget.
Hi,
At this point you only turn data on or off. You cannot switch from 3g to 2g.
I would like to have this feature to, because the radio at my work is very poor and the battery last much longer in 2g.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
switch 2g , 3g, and 2g/3g
if i have to change the default network setting (3, which mean 3g/2g auto), i can from here:
1. from the dialpad dial *#*#4636#*#*
2. from the popued menu, choose Phone Information
3. from "Set preffered network type" You can choose several options including:
"GSM auto (PRL)" (this is usually default and means 3g and failback to 2g, depending on signal
"WCDMA prefered" (this mean 3g and if there is no 3g, then 2g), this settings seems to wotk, but if you exit and return to the same menu it is changed
"WCDMA only" 3g only
"GMS only" 2g only
hope that helps.
p.s. I use Battery monitor application, which has shortcut to the Phone Information menu.

Thanks for the reply. I was messing around in those menus and could not find a "GSM only" mode on my phone. I will look again, but all I remember were an "auto" mode, a "3g only" mode, and a bunch of CDMA stuff (which doesn't apply to our phones).
But I will look again and try out the battery monitor application program as that would be nicer than typing the key sequence everytime.
And just to expand my (rather small) knowledge of the android OS. The option to select only 2G under Settings » Wireless controls » Mobile networks, is that a framework thing that has to be added?

Network with 3G connectivity

Hello guys, i am from India. Here, I have activated airtel 3g and i am from Maharashtra state. Here, airtel network uses IDEA network for 3g packs as they don't own the spectrum. I kept my cell in 3g mode and "automatically select network", but it stays in 2g(Same doesnt happen in my note 2, using 3g in auto mode). If i manually select IDEA from the list of networks, it goes to 3g. I want to keep it on auto, like switch to 2g when 3g is not available. Settings are same. How to make it switch to 3g automatically. Preferred mode is 3g. Any problem in my handset?
Thanks
