So far my Touch Pro has been great, but the battery life has been a bit lacking.
I'm wondering if there is a program which can turn on and off 3G easily and quickly, but without rebooting the phone, so you can turn on 3G when you want to surf the web for 10-15 minutes, but turn it off for the majority of the day to conserve battery.
Any ideas?
Regards
If your ROM has Band Selection enabled, go to Settings -> Phone -> Band and you can choose GSM (2G) or UMTS (3G)
What do I change? Under Select Network Type there's Auto, GSM, or WCDMA
or under Select your GSM/UTMS band there's Auto, GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100), GSM(1900+850)+UTMS(1900+850) or UTMS(2100+800)
At the moment both are on auto. Which do I want for just GSM and which would I want for 3G when I want it on?
Thanks for the reply
you would want Select Network Type to be set to GSM for GSM/EDGE only, and WCDMA for UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA.
(the other setting is to choose which frequencies you're using)
It would appear that there's exactly the app I was looking for which turns 3G on and off. It's here

my data plan only use 3g (umts) and not 3.5g (hsdpa)... but my android always switch 3g to and looking for hsdpa back and forth and drain battery much faster
when umts change to hspda (icon change from 3g to H) then it use battery power.. in my case i use 3g (umts and not 3.5g or hspda ) data plan only... but android keep searching hspda signal and THIS is when battery used the most (the process) and EVEN when my area have 3.5g covered but because i use 3g only data plan... then the back and forth process (3g<->H) will kep coming and drain my battery fast
so... i look for any kind of workaround so our android keep stay in 3g (umts) and not drain any unnecessary battery power searching for hspda
maybe android "thinks" 3g/umts and 3.5/hspda as the same?? android categorize umts and hspda as one big fat 3G network
i wonder why newer os like android doesnt have this kind of feature in winmo there is an option :
disable hspa = so hspda disabled.. AKA 2G or UMTS only
enable hspa = enabled hspda, hspa, hsupa etc.. AKA 2G, UMTS and HSPDA
is there any tweak/program/widget/application that can enable 3g (umts) only?
i think it is settings>wireless networks> network mode> GSM
if not try *#*#4636#*#*
go to phone information and you can select preferred network type.
If this helps press thanks!
uhh i have tried that before (and choose wcdma only aka 3g only).. and no luck
reason like i sadi before android "thinks" 3g/umts and 3.5/hspda as the same, android categorize umts and hspda as one big fat 3G network...
so 3G in android is umts+hsdpa, while i want umts only
To get 3G UMTS only
Firstly make sure your device is rooted.
Download Root Explorer, if you don't have
Go to your system folder
Mount it as read and write (r/w)
Find Build.prop
Select and Hold it, and the options will appear
Select the open with button
Select the text editor
Scroll down to find ro.ril.hsxpa=1
Change the number to your desire network (0 or 5 = UMTS , 1 = HSDPA only, 2 = HSDPA & HSUPA)
For your case change it to 5 and it should be like this ro.ril.hsxpa=5
Save it
Then reboot
Now it should be running 3G instead of H
This worked for my HTC Desire HD
don't work for me.
In ro.ril.hsxpa=X, I have written x=0 and I'm still leaving a H
Using Xperia Mini Pro (sk17i)
This is actually on old hack I used from the G1 forum. This is really useful if you are in an area where 4G or 3G is weak and you phone keeps switching back and forth to edge. Very annoying...
Install AnyCut from market
Open AnyCut and click NEW SHORTCUT
Click ACTIVITY
Scroll down to "Phone Info" and select that.
I renamed the shortcut "FORCE 4G" but you could name it anything.
Click OK
Now open the shortcut on your home screen, and scroll down to the bar that spans across the whole screen. This is the bar that controls all your network types listed here.
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all. (FORCE 4G!)
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (MY FAVORITE ON G2X)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this
Im sure this hack works on all android devices, less options will show for phones w/o that capability.
BetterCut will obviously also work and youll be able to customize an icon for the shortcut
Menu, settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, network mode, wcdma only.
Won't that do the same thing without all the work?
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone information
Scroll down
Change WCDMA preferred to WCDMA Only
Same thing as well... If youre that desperate for "4g", however, if you lose 4g/3g you lose ALL SERVICE, I believe. I had played with these settings on my n1 last year. In the end, I found WCDMA preferred was the most reliable ;-)

He's talking about changing the hidden menu. There are two menus, if you change it in the non-hidden menu and not on the hidden menu, is different.
This should probably be moved to themes and apps or general. Nothing really developed here, no offense.

This isn't the hidden menu this is just the phone info menu that you can access with *#*#4636#*#*
Thanks! I skirt the edge of society and there are a few ROMs that I really like to use that don't have this option built-in. Bionix has it but CM7/Faux and others do not have the option available from the mobile networks menu. I'm sure it adds to radio life if you set it to stick with the highest signal since the phone won't be switching towers.
I have a post about this in the Q&A section, but have any of you experience the G2X using only 1X or CDMA data frequencies other than 4g?
Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem with my Sensation. I'm not sure what spec it is.
Here is the issue.
When I go into *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone information -> Menu -> Select band
I have 3 options: EURO, AUTOMATIC (DEFAULT), USA
My provider uses 2100Mhz as 3G frequency. When I leave the setting at default i get very slow speed, less than 1Mbps if I switch it to EURO I get 6.5Mbps. Leaving it in EURO setting also kills all the 2G frequency except 900Mhz, so roaming in the USA was not possible. I had to switch the phone to USA, then it's no problem.
My question: Why can't I change the 3G band in the normal menu? Is there a way to do this? Or do I always have to go to the special menu?
Why leaving it at AUTOMATIC gets my so slow speed?
Hope someone can help.
Thanks!
Many of you know that the sore point of this phone is the quality of signal reception. Informing about the mode of action of the baseband, and reading the feedback from users about their various tests, always read from their words unsatisfied a search of a radio version that could improve the reception of the terminal (and thus battery life).
Since I live in a poor signal area on the Vodafone network IT (and no LTE coverage), I thought that perhaps the solution could meet elsewhere. After PimpMyRom installation , under "Device Hidden Menu > Access Hidden Menu > Telephone informations" there is a menĂ¹ was set to a profile "LTE / GSM auto (PRL)".
By clicking on the drop-down menu, I selected GSM Auto (PRL), then rebooted, and i have greatly improved connectivity to the network.
Below there is a legend about the most important items. Take the test and reported your opinions.
I recommend GSM Auto (PRL) for best battery consumption allowing the automatic signal 2G/3G, preferring to 2G when the 3G signal is weak.
- WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.

Hi, i`m on SlimRom 4.3 Beta 4
Everytime i try to change my Phone Profile to GSM Auto or something else in the List it crashes and says:
The Process: com.android.phone was quitted.
Any Suggestions what to do?
The LTE is draining my Battery like Hell!

It's strange because is a System related setting that can be changed without problems...maybe in your case this parameter is linked to something other. In my case all went ok only selecting other profile (i discovered that if you select "2G only" into telephone settings, this string change to GSM Only). So my suspicious is related to a linkage to some other driver that won't make you possible to change it.
We have to investigate. However my battery drain seems lowered combined with "Wifi tx power" + "iwconfig" file used for reduce Wifi signal power to 11dB. Other small things and Jelly pure ROM 4.3 will be perfect for daily drainage use
Hello guys, i am from India. Here, I have activated airtel 3g and i am from Maharashtra state. Here, airtel network uses IDEA network for 3g packs as they don't own the spectrum. I kept my cell in 3g mode and "automatically select network", but it stays in 2g(Same doesnt happen in my note 2, using 3g in auto mode). If i manually select IDEA from the list of networks, it goes to 3g. I want to keep it on auto, like switch to 2g when 3g is not available. Settings are same. How to make it switch to 3g automatically. Preferred mode is 3g. Any problem in my handset?
Thanks
