[Q] Voice dialing without data - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so i'm using my nexus 5 without a data plan (for now) and I've found that when I'm not connected to wifi my voice dialing isn't working properly. When I try to say the full phone number it works fine, but when I try to say the contact name it always gives me one of only two of my contacts regardless of what I say. If I go into wifi range and try again it works perfect, but when I'm out in my car (where I'll want to use a feature like this) I have no luck.
Any ideas?

Just a guess but when you say the name rather than the number it is probably going through Google's servers so you would need data for it to work.

My thought too, but why does it work for those two contacts?

Possibly saved in cache from when you called them with wifi?

No that's not it. I've tried it on wifi with a number, had it work, immediately turned off wifi and had it not work.

so far I haven't seen a Touch Pro that will show webpages!

Been thinking about getting a Touch Pro but my buddy has a Fuze and it won't show web pages in Opera or IE. It gives an error exactly like what this guy is experiencing, http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/2214127/HTC+Fuze+Internet+fails+6-12+hours+after+soft+reset?t=anon
I went to the AT&T store and both of the display models do the same thing. Went to the Sprint store and there display model does the same thing! The Touch Diamond sitting next to the Touch Pro at the Sprint store worked just fine. I tried the trick that apparently worked for some people in that thread on my buddies phone of holding down the hangup/disconnect button for 3+ seconds, the little colorful spinny ball comes on screen and then goes away but still can't get to the internet, same error. Same thing with the phone in the Sprint store.
What gives? How can all these TPs be having this problem but few others are complaining about it?
I dont know whats wrong with all of the Touch Pros you have used but mine is great... always shows any webpage the only complaint is the pages take a few seconds to render when you scroll
yeah mine works great and has since the beginning he probably hasnt set up his data correctly and usually display models dont do anything
never had a problem on mine. and i use opera, ie, opera mini, skyfire, iris
Yes, I have the same problem! After 16+ hours, email/weather in TF3D etc. are all working but browsers/google maps cannot access internet.
I have to switch off/on my data and everything starts working again.
I have AT&T Fuze with stock rom and radio.
Another thing, whenever I restart my phone, it asks for the password to connect to media.net, I have leave it blank, check save password and hit ok everytime.

no, these are fully working phones, not just the dummy phones, the Samsung next to one of them at the AT&T store worked fine, the Blackberry next to the other one worked fine, but both Fuzes couldn't load webpages but otherwise worked, like I could launch apps and everything. The guys at the AT&T store couldn't figure out why it wasn't working either, said something about his manager had to call tech support to get it working since it was a store phone and he wasn't authorized to call tech support for it.
and like I said at the sprint store the diamond sitting next to the touch pro worked just fine but the touch pro coudlnt' get to webpages.
My buddies phone I think works for e-mail, think he has exchange setup.

how do you switch it off an one?
I've never had a problem with it. Full web pages using opera. But I don't use my phone for that very often. If I want to get on the web I just tether, it's faster and easier.

You can go to settings, communications, and then switch off data connection. Or Start-menu, settings, network, wireless manager.

yes, phone also works fine, apart from mail/sms etc. It is just the browsers and the apps that cannot connect.
Did you try disable or enable hidden proxy? I've been having a weird problem with a custom ROM that I made and after a hard reset I have to use one or the other to get the internet to work again.

I have worked in a couple ATT stores, and been in LOTS of cell phone stores (tmobile, verizon, sprint), and I have never seen a display model that had service. Most of them are not even real phones....

all the other phones in the Sprint and AT&T stores are real phones and work fine, I went to the internet on the HTC Touch Diamond sitting two feet away and a Samsung Instinct accross the store at Sprint, and went to the web on a Motorla (or something) phone sitting next to the Fuze at the AT&T store. Best Buy has fake phones out so obviously couldn't check there.

how do I do that? I tried to click disable on the proxy in opera:config but it seems to autoenable it's self again.
I have this problem, too! I thought it was just my account on AT&T that has this problem (my MeidaNet page also does not work) but it might be a bigger problem in AT&Ts network. It isn't just the FUZE that does this, my Tilt did it, too. I do not remember if my Black Jack did or not.
This happens to me EXACTLY when my data connection time goes over 24 hours. I have to close my data connection to fix it. Not a HUGE issue, but would be nice if it was resolved. I think default end key hold behavior is to end the data connection, so that's why it works.
If my data connection sits idle for too long something like that happens occasionally for me...
but nothing a quick 'disable/enable data' cant fix.
I also dont use stock roms, I had the Fuze stock ROM for 2 days before i flashed it (wanted to do my research on flashing before I did it, also wanted a 'control' for when i swapped phones)

I can't use data/3g during a call. Has it always been this way??

Is there a workaround to use the data connection while on the phone?

No?
The data connection(UMTS/HSPA) and voice connection(GSM) on the Nexus S are separate WHEN AND IF you are receiving full 3G signal. If you are on EDGE or are receiving an extremely weak 3G, there is no workaround.
Ah thanks, that clears it up!

Actually, rereading that, I don't think I was very clear at all. Sorry if I can off as a little abrasive.
To reiterate, you should be able to use the data connection while on a phone call under most normal circumstances. Only when you find yourself on EDGE or with an exceptionally weak 3G signal(and sometimes there's not really an indicator for this) would you not be able to.
in the worse case scenario, the data connection will just PAUSE, until you stop talking on the phone, then you get data access, but as soon as you start talking again, then the data pauses
i've experienced this with OTHER phones.
not yet have noticed this on the SNS, as i've had no chance to do it yet.
or more like no needs
the only times i Talk, and email or browse the web
is when some one asks me for details which i don't know and i need to google it for them, then email it to them
so a test is very easy
just call some one
start yapping away, meanwhile trying to google up anything, and see if both works simultaneousl.
They should, unless you are on EDGE (2G)

[Q] Best GPS Find My Phone App?

Hey guys, which app is best for a find my phone sort of app. I just received a Nexus 5 although I will not be getting a plan for it just yet. I will mainly just be using this as a normal wifi device. I want a "find my phone" sort of app that just in case I lose my phone, I will be able to track where it is from my computer. Can somebody recommend me the best app for this feature.

Yeah but it does not give a solid answer
So the 8 people that said Cerberus isn't solid enough for you? Or are you not looking for anti theft as well? Google already has a locating service built in.

I just want a solid app that I can find my phone with that does not require cellular data or talk and text. It would just require the GPS feature. I am not looking for anti-theft. Plus Cerebus doesn't look like it would be a stable app.
I disagree about the Cerberus.
Try the built-in feature:

The thing about these apps is that they all need some kind of data connection to work. The phone can use only GPS to find out where it is but without a data connection it can't get that information out to you.

It does. When you log into Google Device Manager from a computer or other device it sends a request (through its data connection) to the phone for its location. The phone then finds it own location through cell networks/Wifi networks/GPS and sends that data back through its data connection to Google Device Manager.
This is why it needs a data connection, be it cell data or Wifi, to function. The phone can find its location without out one but has to be connected to send that information out for you to see it.

[Q] Orange signal icons when on data plan

Hello,
i have a strange issue (i'm aware of problems that were having Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 users, but i don't know if it's the same) when i'm not connected to any WiFi router and i have access to internet via my provider.
Whenever i check the Quick Settings Panel in the Notification drawer the signal bars are orange and not white as they should have been, no matter if i'm in area with good signal perception (4G selection on the phone), or bad (2G/3G selection on the phone).
The result is that i have access to internet, i can surf via a web browser, use Facebook, read articles/forums in Tapatalk and so on, but i get no notifications for almost every app that notifies you (Gmail, apps that notifies you for live scores for favorite teams such as FotMob, pm in Facebook or notifications for replies/mentions on G+).
When i connect to WiFi router, then i get a barrage of notifications that i've missed the time i was on data plan.
Unfortunatelly, i have no friends that have a micro-SIM and have a data plan enabled, or those who have data plan enabled they have a Mini-SIM (for devices such as Galaxy S3 mini), and i can't try one in order to see if the problem exists with their SIMs.
Do you have in mind what should the problem be?
This looks like a Google services issue.
Try applying a theme and see if it persists. I remember seeing what you are describing at some point

Yes, i know from the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 threads that the orange icon bars means that you have no connection to Google servers.
But i can't understand why only me among my friends with the same Operator, meet such an issue!

To be honest i'm already using an Android L - CM11/PA Theme and as soon as i read your post i was hoping that this is causing the problem, but i applied the stock one, did a reboot, and the icons are still orange.
Thanks both of you for your replies.

When you clear data inside Manage space, does that mean that all your accounts will be wiped out and you'll have to add them all over the beginning?

As soon as i am connected to WiFi router everything is ok.
When on data plan under my Google email there is a Sync error, which i think is right considering that the orange icon bars means that there is no connection to Google servers (that's what i've read in Nexus 4 and 5 threads).

ok so I would try different APN's, check and uncheck data enabled option, check off data roaming option, tick and untick all options in Google that wont sync. I mean try it all if you have not already of course. I have had the orange before and thats all I did was check the main stuff and no issues. If you can make calls and stuff I am quite sure you are ok.
Try 2g only - try it all basically of course if you have not already
For a colleague the issue was operator related. When he was on LTE he had no connection to google servers. It eventually got fixed after a million calls to customer care. If it matters the operator was DU UAE.

Force Google to forget Wifi networks?

Hello everyone,
My phone (HTC One M7 Verizon) refuses to forget wifi networks. I have a 2.4 network at my apartment that I don't like to use because there is so much interference from other apartments. I have a 5Ghz network that I want my phone to connect to, which it does about half the time. The other half it goes to the 2.4GHz network.
I have tried to go to the wifi settings and forgetting the network, but after toggling wifi it comes back. I believe this is because Google remembers wifi passwords so they can be restored if you reset your device. Is there any way I can remove these stored passwords?
I have also tried editing the wpa_supplicant file and after a wifi toggle the network is restored.
Thanks in advance!
The setting for Google saving your wifi passwords is in "Backup and reset", but this also includes your app data and contacts, so you might not want to toggle it off.
Forgetting the network should work. I've done it on my phones, and it always works, even if I have the backup setting toggled on.
The obvious solution is to simply rename your network.

I did think to rename my network, but would rather avoid that only because I really shouldn't have to rename my network because my phone refuses to forget a network.
I believe this is because of Google because I have recently wiped my phone and installed a new ROM so I doubt any saved network info would have survived that.

It's still a solution though, and a simple one. There's no gain to be had in being stubborn about it.

When you first set up your phone newly installed ROM, it gives you the option to restore data and accounts and passwords. If you allow it, it doesn't matter what device or ROM or whatever it came from, the saved info will be restored. I don't know why toggling wifi un-forgets the network though. That's just weird.

I don't mean to sound stubborn, I just want to avoid reconnecting all my devices that use that network if I can. If that's the only solution that is fine, but I would like to see if I can stop this from happening before doing that.
I don't remember seeing an option but I can not include passwords when I the restore during the install?

I think it's all or nothing.
Rename network.....riiggght. Although correct that will work that's a temporary solution .
I can't keep renaming my home and work networks. If google includes the option to forget a network and it doesn't...that's a bug plain and simple.
Of course its great to have google restore my networks...love it. But if I choose to forget a network....read...feature of the os......it should sync that setting.
Heck...we are not even talking about a restore...if I forget one of my 3 home networks right now....by tomorrow night my phone will have it saved again and I have to forget it again. Need a good ole days option to state what takes precedence....cloud or device or something.
