[Q] Bad ESN? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Friend couldn't pay his bill on Verizon and is looking to sell off his RAZR maxx HD as a result. Branded ESN due to lack of payment. I'm interested in buying it off him but only if I'm able to activate it. I was wondering if anyone knew of a safe and LEGAL way of clearing/fixing the branded ESN.

If you want to get the devices release. Your going to have to do a couple of things.
If services is suspended,
1. Your friend need to call them and set up a promise to pay on the bill. You need to set that up to get the devices cut back on to completed a en change. (The promise to pay is going to need a checking account. You can purchase a PayPal Prepaid card and give them the banking information.
2. Once you have the first one completed, then find an older phone or something that you can complete a esn change and that will release the devices.
If the devices is still activate,
1. Call Verizon and tell them you want to do a esn change on that number.
That should do it for you my friend.

Buyers Beware...T-Mobile Phones

If you guys don't know T-Mobile has started blacklisting IMEIs of devices with unpaid accounts, stolen devices etc
I've seen a few threads with people saying their phone randomly stopped working one day, the SIM wouldn't pick up signal. There is a few things that could have happened, since SIM cards do go bad. But if it's a phone you bought on Craigslist/eBay/BST forum etc beware you can get screwed down the road. If someone gets a phone on one of the new value plans and decides to cancel service after selling the device and it goes unpaid you will have a brick. If they don't cancel service and sell the phone, then report it stolen, you will have a brick. There is MANY scenarios, people things oh hey this phone is $200, I can sell it for $450 and cancel the line and I've made $250...well the end user will now have a no longer working phone. that's just the start of it.
Just beware when buying phones online, this has always been the case for Sprint/Verizon...but now T-Mobile has started doing the same. not sure about AT&T since I don't have personal experience with them about blacklisting IMEI.
I don't see how this would affect say an att user. They can just sim unlocked the phone and use it

I might be wrong here, but isn't the signal sent to the SIM? If the IMEI is never actually attached to your line (in the system) theoretically it still wouldn't matter. i.e. I found a Blackberry and decided I would try the $50 TMO prepaid deal. I stopped by the store and bought a SIM but didn't have the phone with me. He said no problem, activated the SIM and sent me on my way and the BB worked.
is this even legal? aren't the phones on contract technically provided as a 'free gift' and therefore property of the buyer from day one?

I believe it is legal. You first have to realize there is no such thing as a 'free' or 'subsidized' phone. You either pay full price upfront or in payments via the monthly service charge. One way or another, providers are gonna get the phone paid for. T-Mobile is the only major US provider that offers cheaper rates if you own your phone.
But...if you get a phone 'free' or 'subsidized' you have to think of it as similar to financing a car. You get to use the car but the bank has a financial interest in it - actually contractually owns it - until you pay it off. That's why they can legally repossess it if you fail to pay. Similarly, until you fulfill your service contract or pay the exit fee the provider has a financial interest in the phone, and by contract, certain legal rights.
Not a perfect analogy but I hope it makes things clearer.

I don't think the SIM will work if the imei is blocked. sIm lock Is totally dIfferent to ImeI block. Imei is how the phone gets it signal. It identifies the handset(not the SIM).
If an imei is blocked in UK then it will not work on any network in UK, but it will work on networks in other countries as there is not an international imei data base there are only national one at the minute. It is not 100% certain to work in another country but it would more than likely work. But for instance O2 in UK is owned by Spanish company Telefonica so an o2 phone blocked by imei may not work in Spain and vice versa.

It is possible to change the imei number of a phone, but I know in the UK it IS ILLEGAL to do this.

Very informative
It's unfortunate that sometimes people are dishonest or unethical even more so when selling anonymously through the internet.
As always in purchasing toys, do your homework and if a deal seems to good to be true..... it probably is.

Craigslist buyer questions!

Hey everyone! I'm really interested in upgrading to the S3 from the T-bolt and I'm not willing to lose my unlimited internet or pay $600 for a brand new retail phone. So I turned to craigslist! I have found a few ads but I'm skeptical about buying them. Are there certain questions I should ask them? Such as the clean ESN/IMEI #? Are there any pictures I should specifically ask for? I'm just trying to get the S3 but without any hidden flaws and catches! So, any help is truly appreciated. Thanks again guys!
Oh, and I also forgot to ask which "model" of the S3 is compatible with Verizon? I know there's a few but I wanted to make sure as well.
I've never bought a phone online so I'm only repeating what I've seen mentioned before. If you live close to the buyer, you can ask them to meet at a local Verizon store to verify the ESN is clean. The Verizon GSIII model number is: SCH-i535. If you can meet in person, just test out several functions of the phone that you would use to verify they work: calls, Bluetooth, no dead pixels on display, tampering on the inside of the phone where the battery is. Things like that which you can test with ease.

Alright, I will definitely give those a try! Thanks a lot! Hopefully other uses who've bought phones off craigslist can give me their input as well. I appreciate it!
Swappa.com
I would check out swappa, if I were you. They are very legit

I buy a lot on craiglist and sell for that matter(about to sell my s3 on there). Like said before meet at verizon and verify sim on spot. Also if possible activate it right then before paying. Check the water sensor under battery, glance over physical condition (some people say like new and they're not). I also recommended to pull off screen protector to see if they are hiding scratches with one.

Honestly they aren't any better here in sc. I've been got a couple times by getting lazy and trusting someone. But if you're careful you can get some good deals!

I have bought & sold on Craigslist & Swappa. Craigslist is fine as long as you can get real pics sent to you via text or email. I bought 2 GS3's on CL recently. Picked up a white 16gb in excellent condition for $275 & a blue 32gb in pristine condition for $290. Had actual pics sent to me, met them at a Verizon, inspected the phone, popped in my sim, made a call, tested the screen & paid. Always, always , always meet at a Verizon. If they won't, don't do it.
Don't buy on craigslist unless you meet in a public place (verizon store is best...). The model number is SCH-I535 for Verizon phones, although if you want a 4g international GS3 should work. However, if you buy it through verizon on a contract you shouldn't loose your unlimited data... Good luck.

The international doesn't work on Verizon. And if he extends his contract he will lose unlimited

Considering MAXX Dev Edition

A couple of questions.
First, does the Dev Edition have all of the same Verizon bloatware that a standard edition would have?
Second, does anyone know a working Promo code for the Motorola website? I'd love to get a discount, if possible.
Thanks.
Apparently it is the same as standard consumer edition, it just has an unlockable bootloader

Also, does anyone know if there is a problem getting Assurion to cover a Dev Edition phone under their insurance?

I'm not sure. I'd try calling them.
The dev phone has no warranty once you get an unlock code for the bootloader; for that reason, and because you buy from Motorola rather than Verizon, it may be that Asurion will not offer coverage. You could try SquareTrade though.

Simple question about carriers

OK so I am finally going to leave big red! I am strongly considering straight talk with at&t LTE Sim. I know you can bring your number. But I want to test it before ditching Verizon. So what would the process be?
Like buy Sim activation kit and a month and use a new number then activate my current number if the service is good?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Buy a SIM activation kit, yes, but what phone will you use it with? You need a GSM phone for the AT&T Straight Talk SIM.
ETA: Apparently, your Droid DNA will work on AT&T. My bad.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007143
I know the DNA will work but won't have 4g. My plan was to buy the nexus and go from there. At&t has really good service in my area.

Basically, do I need to buy another SIM activation kit if the service is good and I want to use my VZW number? I am thinking yes?

You shouldn't. You should be able to port your number over even after a month without buying another SIM activation kit. Or at least I was able to do that with T-Mobile prepaid.

K. I did some extra research and I think it can be done that way. Now let's hope the n5 will be worth ditching my DNA. I do miss my gnex even though it was a failed attempt at the nexus.

Buy on Sprint and later use on TMobile

Will I be able to use the phone on sprint and then when my contract is up use the same phone on T-Mobile?

Well, since the one device has all the frequencies we would assume that it could be used interchangeably. However, if you buy it straight from sprint its really up to them (but they should be required to unlock it as long as your account is in good standing).
I'm hoping the playstore just sells one version that will work on all carriers.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
No, since you used the Galaxy Nexus, if you're one Sprint, there's your answer. Verizon sell 'world phones' but it come through them first, with the software approved and ESN allowed to be activated, there will be two versions if they're going to be a CDMA version.

This is what I am hoping for. My Sprint contract doesn't end until February but my SGS2 is starting to show its age and what can I say...I get impatient.
I am hoping to buy a N5 unlocked and it would be great if I could buy it at launch, do a device swap on my Sprint plan so I can use the newer handset for the last few months of the contract, and then buy a T-Mo prepaid SIM for the $30/mo plan, port my number, and cancel Sprint.
I'm gonna have to keep an eye on things to see how that works out since I don't want to just assume it will work and I end up screwing things up somehow. I mean...I can wait until February if I have to, I'd just rather have the new handset sooner than later if I'm already buying it outright with no subsidy.
