I am not interested in OTAs being auto-downloaded and notifications appeared, since my plan is to flash them via custom recovery.
There's any way to block them on the Nexus 5?
And even if there are, after flashing the ota via CWM/TWRP, the update system will be unabled again?
Thanks a lot in advance.
The otas normally appear long after the flashaholics have updated so you probably won't get an update notification. I was running 4.4 on my N4 at least 3 weeks before the ota.

Well, from my experiences on the Nexus 7 (grouper) 4.3 (JWR66Y) update, I got the OTA the same day that it got posted here on xda.. which make it download the ota and then ask me to install it (an obvious no). If that had happened on the Nexus 5, it would have stolen some precios data plan just for nothing
Download Disable Service from the play store. Go to Google Services Framework under the "System Apps" tab and un-check SystemUpdateService.

What did you freeze?
I did this, however, Google Play Services was hogging my battery like really mad.
Wakelock Detector gave me a 95% awake time.
The Disable services is a worthless option!
Gosh...
I don't want 5.0, my gaming FPS on a lot of games have decreased by a lot.
I've tried a lot of Lollipop ROMs but nothing compares to 4.4.4 with ART enabled, nothing.
Try using GravityBox. It is a Xposed module. Will work only if you are rooted. And it is not just limited to achieving this but you can do a lot more.
Goto statusbar tweaks-ongoing notification blocker-tap the apps you want to block notifications from.. It should work after the reboot
But that would require Dalvik right..
And Dalvik just looks slower to me.
I experience that especially in the Gallery app, where Dalvik stutters when scrolling, and ART just flys.
Perhaps that improved? Is it just as fluid as ART?
Disable Service still works. You just have to disable a few extra services now. I have the following disabled with no crazy wakelocks and everything still works on my Nexus 5 running 4.4.4
Google Play Services
UpdateFromSdCardService
SystemUpdateService
Sync Service (won't affect syncing emails, etc.)
CacheUpdateService
ConfigFetchService
Google Services Framework
CheckinService
EventLogService
SystemUpdateService
I also have the following broadcast receivers disabled:
Google Play Services
SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver
SystemUpdateService$Receiver
SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
Google Services Framework
SystemUpdateService$Receiver
SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
I'm running the following shell script at startup using Tasker. This step is overkill but worth doing if you use Tasker:
pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateActivity
pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService
pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver
pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateActivity
pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdatePanoActivity
pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService
pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
pm disable com.google.android.gsf/.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
For over-overkill and if you use the Amplify Xposed module I suggest you restrict the SystemUpdateService wakelock and the com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService service.

Very Easy! Takes one paid app and easy to undo. After flashing the OTA you'll have to look in Autostarts to see if the two Google Play services are still disabled or not. Back when it was one service in the Google Services Framework that would disable the OTA it would stay disabled after flashing the OTA from a custom recovery but it's different services so I don't know yet if they stay disabled or have to be disabled again. I haven't flashed an OTA in recovery since Google Play Services took control of the OTA updates which is a fairly recent development. I'm sticking with 4.4.4 probably till 5.1 comes out, whenever that is, so I personally won't be flashing any images or OTA's anytime soon.

I am trying and getting absolutely nowhere disabling the OTA update nag screen. Even though my phone is rooted I can not disable the OTA update service nor rename the otacerts.zip file (as it still says access is denied.)
Motorola is refusing to help me aswell.
Surely there is a way of doing this?
Any help would be much appriciated.
I disabled the OTA and a whole bunch of other services using Greenify. There is a thread in this forum, with a comprehensive list of services that can be disabled (far more than I disabled). I also disabled some apps from multi tasking. I typically get 3 days of moderate usage. So its a win win situation.
Can u tell me the apps that i can disable to save battery life.

I understand to do this I have to install the xposed framework? Something that does worry me after seeing the dreaded boot loop recently.
I am under the impression from some thread in here, renaming otacerts.zip in the system folder to otacerts.bak can disable the function, but likewise I am a bit worried about bricking my phone. Motorola have informed me that updates are mandatory now and they will not tell me how to disable OTA updates.
The lack of working apps for things like this is also putting me off playing around too.

I got rid of the nag screen by disabling an app called "motorolaOTA" and erasing the cache in recovery to delete the OTA file. I really wouldn't recommend upgrading to 4.4.4 as I eventually did anyway about a week after disabling the nag screen (wanted to test it out lol) and in the process hard bricked my phone.
So, disable "motorolaOTA" and whatever you do DO NOT upgrade!

Sorry, I dont have access to the phone right now so cannot list the services. But I think I fed some miss-information, I now realize that I used Titanium backup to freeze the unwanted apps. This being all Motorola services. I then used Greenify on my messaging apps, like Facebook, Whatsapp and others.
But I do agree with another comment in this thread that rooting does mess up the upgrade process, it becomes a real pain! So its worth considering to not do it. Like others I have not upgraded to 4.4.4

This helped me with the upgrade (Phone is unlocked, rooted and had xposed modules on it before the upgrade)
For me to succesfully update the OTA i had to do follow the steps in the OP of this Post. I tried a lot of flashing, but in the end only this worked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/ota-file-indian-dual-sim-4-4-4-t2810166
Just follow the steps below the text:
REVERT TO STOCK WITHOUT LOSING DATA OR ANYTHING ELSE
After this, you have to root it again with superboot. It's worth the effort to have 4.4.4. The phone feels more responsive for me.
Problem Solved!
I installed "System app remover (ROOT) by Jumobile". Its a free app in the google play store. This allowed me to uninstall Motorola OTA service.
The upgrade nag screen has yet to re-appear, and my phone is otherwise functioning perfectly.
Well done! I had never heard of this app, it looks neat. I use Titanium primarily for backups, the ability to freeze apps is just a nice bonus. I wonder if Titanium and "System app remover" work using the same method? With Titanium its easy to restore a frozen app. I read that "System app remover" puts removed apps in the recycle bin. I'm wondering what the chances are of this storage getting erased by accident, making it harder to restore?
I want to keep my rooted nexus 5 on Kitkat right now and want to get rid of the system notifications for a system update.
What should I edit in my build.prop?
Also if I'm on 4.4.4 and have my phone believe I'm on 5.0 would that mess anything up with downloading apps from google play?

Have you found the answer to this yet? Usually there are a few values in the build.prop that will make the notifications go away. I'm not 100% sure what they are on Nexus phones, specifically the N5, but if I were to guess, it'd be:
ro.build.id
ro.build.display.id
ro.build.version.release
I'm guessing the system checks one of these values, and that's the one you'd need to change. I just don't know which one. And yes, it would have an impact on apps from Google Play. It's possible you'll get notifications about apps not being compatible with your device.
Can you not just delete the update device (or whatever it's called) app in the system?

Hello,
I am facing high battery drain through my google service app, and i disable wake lock in the privacy setting it service is crashing time and time again. Please share any ideas in sorting out the battery drain.
Regards
I am in the same situation as you. I'm on CM11S and I also disabled the wake locks as suggested in the FAQ thread. I have had the Google Play services crash a few times and also I've had the Facebook app and then the messenger app crash on me once after a prompt from the Privacy Guard
Which software version are you using?
If you're rooted try disable service. When installed just disable the active ones under system / Google play services

There's no idea to wait. Just do as I said in the post above. Works great, almost no standby drain at all.

Well first of all you gotta root your phone. When that is done, download disable service from the play store (the app icon is a blue android guy). When you're in the app, scroll right and then down to find Google play services. Tap that and disable all the active ones. ( the active ones are marked in blue.

If it do not function for anything, at least not consume RAM.
Not the Webview if you use GApps such as Play Store, etc, Facebook yes if unused
Disappointed in Sony for including com.facebook.appmanager and com.facebook.system as uninstallable components. My Z5 came with the Facebook app already installed (Customized DE firmware). I never even ran the app (I don't do facebook) - uninstalled it the second I spotted it but these two processes remain and can only be disabled, not uninstalled.
Feck off Facebook!
I deleted webview once on my old Z1, system became unresponsive.

Tks !!!
I keep a real clean phone. I don't use FB either and have it disabled. But I discovered this file or application and as fast as I would shut down and delete cache and data it would reload itself. This action alone made me suspicious of it and I wanted it off my phone or at the very least disabled. On another forum it was recommended to install "Package Disabler Pro" at a cost of $.99 and I tried it. In the notes and warnings you have to use this carefully least you make the phone unusable but I "disable" these two persistant "Facebook" files and they have not come back. My phone works fine too. Then I went after the damn Sprint/Samsung installed voicemail program that keeps wanting you to upgrade and then it had a persistant flag that kept coming up saying "We had forced upgrades too but this one is necessary". I said no to that too and with this program finally have turned it OFF.
Hope this helps.

To completely disable them ("temporary" uninstallation) use Debloater http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294
or learn how to use the
Code:
pm hide
command
As suggested, i would not disable Android Webview.
Always do a BACKUP of your personal files before disabling system apps : if you are not rooted and disable the wrong package, you'll get in bootloop and will have to reset the phone.

Hi Guys....
I am running EMUI 5.0.1 on Honor 8. I can't find a way to disable - freeze apps as it was possible in previous Android versions (Until Android 6 at least). The only thing I can find is the option to disable apps after screen lock.
But this is not what I want, and also does not close background services of the app. For example, there is a health tracking app that is running continuously on the background... I want to stop it without uninstalling it... Isn't there a way?
PS: I have seen the ADB method to stop background apps, but I can't believe that such a useful feature was disabled from recent android versions... Also please note that the system apps that came installed on the phone (like Youtube, Browser, etc..) DO have the disable option in app Info.... The user Apps have only force stop and uninstall...
You can make it a system app by for example usibg lucjy patcher if you have root (I think). Just don't use it for illegal purposes.
I can understand there are workarounds, like rooting the phone... I want to know if there is an official no superuser way, like there was in previous version of Android

@marv_in_lbc I do not want to uninstall the apps.... And also not talking about system apps... I want to disable them and without the use of 3rd party app... All I am asking if this is doable as it was in previous android versions...
I am not even sure if Huawei has just disabled this option in their firmware, but this must't be the case, since the option is available but only for system apps. From my previous experience this was available in all apps in previous android versions.
(I missed this the first time I read your post, but that Health app that's always running -- this method stops that as the Health app is one that I "removed" using this method.)
Watch the video.
The title is a little misleading as the apps are not actually uninstalled, but rather removed from use from the primary user - in effect, freezing them. But, for all intents & purposes, the app is uninstalled. When you look for the app in the app drawer, it will not show up. When you start your phone, the app(s) will not start. The app(s) will still be technically installed, just not available for use by the primary user (user 0).
That method worked with my Honor 8, Xiaomi Redmi 4x, Moto X Pure, Moto E & an old ZTE phone.

Depends upon the OEM. System apps include apps like YouTube & Email, but also vendor apps like Huawei Health. Some will allow you to disable, while a few others will allow complete uninstalling - it depends upon the OEM (and in some cases, the carrier, at least in the US)
A system app that can't be disabled or uninstalled usually can only be removed if the device is rooted. The method shown in the video doesn't require root & persists after reboots - like the app is actually uninstalled.
The video explains it all.
