I am alright with phones understand android a decent amount and computer as well. I worked at Radioshack for 3 years so know my way around most nondeveloper things on a phone. I need to edit my apn setting on my S3 to be able to use data on metropcs. Everything else works but data. I can not edit APN as it is just blanked out. Is there a way to just edit the apn settings without rooting or must I root the phone? If I have to root can I have step my step instructions for the easiest way to do it. A link to a thread would be fine.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Tyler

Any help?
Correct me if I'm wrong
If you are on the stock rom and just rooted or non-rooted, maybe that's the reason of it because for me (just my opinion and observation), Verizon allows only mobile data to them, but if you just want to call and text, it will just notify you that you have unknown sim card but you can do call and text.

Have you checked your apn settings? Tried a different radio? If you tell them you are rooted or on a custom rom they will not help you. The first thing they will ask you to do is factory reset your phone.
well im not a complete noob, i have already tryed the proper radio and ril, i also restored my original apn settings, nothing worked, i also would not intentionally reveal the fact that i am rooted, what im asking is whether or not they will be able to tell if im rooted based on the info they have and the numbers in my phone they will ask for when i call...

not that your rooted no.

they should be able to help. The fact that your on a custom rom may be an issue as they may try to push something to your phone. Worth a shot.
I actually called them probably.. Over the weekend. they asked for a few pieces of information that luckily I had saved in case of any issue. They ask for Baseband Version (Radio) and software version (ROM). That's the 2 biggest things you'll need to look out for.
Find the stock radio number as well as the updated AT&T ROM software, the 1.84.xx blah.
Hope this helps a little.
You don't get data at all? I had to change my imei number from my previous phone to get data. Not sure of it applies to you but it worked great after that.

So far this is the first phone where I've been able to unlock the bootloader. I've rooted several phones with no problem. I do know how to make apps on a beginner level and I'm very eager to do some programming for this phone. I would like to learn how to create and reprogram kernels. Right now I'm stuck. What do I do now. My Photon Q is ready!!!! Bootloader unlocked, rooted, and I have installed the clockworkmod. Can someone help me get started on programming roms, kernels, and etc. I WANT TO FULLY CUSTOMIZE THIS PHONE.
So far all I've been able to do is change the boot animation...lol
I'm also trying to figure out how I can block my carrier so I can tether and stream videos without CSPIRE restrictions.
custom kernel, custom rom etc, start tweaking now
You could try and give Interloper a hand on developing CyanogenMod 10.1 for the Q. I'm sure he'd appreciate any assistance you can give.

They havent been developed yet for this phone. If you want to learn something please go to the Photon Q development forum and find the CM9 or CM10 thread and help interloper or aaargghh with some troubleshooting on those custom roms. PM them or whatever, they are asking for testers. CM is what this phone needs, bad.

I am wondering exactly how did you unlock the bootloader? I recently purchased the Photon Q from CSpire but I am unable to unlock it. I went to the Motorola site and went through the entire process only to be told my phone is not eligible to unlock. Spoke with Motorola support and they informed me that only the Sprint Photon Q could be unlocked. I hope you can point me in the right direction. Thank you very much in advance for any help you can give.
Ah yeah, here's the thread about CSpire. Are you sure you didn't make a typo?
hey guys, i found my way to this thread as well, haha. i hope you find a way to unlock, robcross72... keep us posted.

In answer to your question, what I did was after manually typing in that long "code" I finally did a cut and paste of all the numbers. At my sons baseball game so I will attempt again when I get home. Maybe it was my work computer. You know how IT likes to block all sorts of stuff. I will repost my results. Thanks again guys for your help.!
Still can't unlock
Hey guys, I just wanted to post what I have tried so far. I again went and tried getting the unlock key from Motorola. I have cut and pasted the code into Microsoft Word 07, Word 10, and a trial of Word 13, as well as used Note Editor. I have also tried manually typing the code in but still no luck. I tried late last night and again this morning. I read where one guy used a different email to login on the Motorola site and it worked for him. I tried that as well. I still continue to get the message that states "You're device does not qualify to unlock". In another thread yogi2010 pointed out a way that people were rooting without unlocking. I have read through that forum and though it has been successful, from what I have read, I would have to have the bootloader unlocked in order to install custom rom's. I may be wrong but that is what I have learned thus far. Anyway, I said I would post after I re-attempted. I appreciate everyone's help. Maybe the original poster will make his way back here and explain how he unlocked his CSpire Photon Q. I will keep trying.
Well, if you make any typo, then it will say that the phone does not qualify to bootloader unlock.

Well, I have manually typed it in many times. I have had someone else call each digit to me and then had them double check. I have counted the digits in the code to make sure I had the correct amount. I have also copied the code and pasted it in but still I continue to get the message that my device does not qualify to be unlocked. It just seems for whatever reason mine will not be unlocked. However, I cannot thank you guys enough for your advice and assistance.
Update: Success!
Hey all! I just wanted to update y'all on what has happened. I have literally been trying to unlock my phone every single day. I have continued to receive the message that my device is not eligible to be unlocked. Well, today I found myself with a little free time at work. So I again cut and pasted the code into the box on the Motorola website. And again when I clicked on the box "can my device be unlocked" I received the same message. However, since I had some free time, I clicked the button again, and again, and again..... and on the 14th try (honestly I counted) I received the message to get my unlock key. I clicked on "I agree" and within a few minutes I received the email with the unlock key. I have not unlocked yet due to my work computer will not allow me to download the Android SDK. But I will be doing the unlock in a bit when I go to lunch. Now the next step is to search the forums on how to get CM10 on my phone, if I can. Thanks again to everyone who offered advice.
I need to some help with making sure I am going the right way.
I've got a Razr HD - XT925 on the ROGERS/FIDO network.
The phone is rooted and I wanted to install Cyanogenmod on it. I used to have it on a Motorola Milestone and loved it. I would love to install Cyanogenmod on this phone as I liked the way you could tweak the phone more.
Android version is 4.1.2
Baseband - VANQUISH_U_BP_100700.220.65.33P
BUILD NUMBER - 9.8.2Q-8-XT925_VQL-12.2
SYSTEM VERSION - 98.21.12202.XT925.RCI.en.CA
Now I've had root for awhile now and ready to take the plunge. Here are the steps I think I should take.
1. Unlock with Motopocalyspe.
2. Install TWRP
3. Add Cyanogenmod img to SD Card.
4. Boot into recovery and install img file?
Given the type of phone I have will these steps be fine? I'd appreciate the help to know at least I am in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
i cant confirm your system version will let you unlock, but your steps are correct.
I've been to the Motorola site and it seems like I should be able to unlock. I would rather unlock using motopocalyspe though. Can anyone confirm?
Also regarding cyanogenmod, is it relatively stable? Camera works? Wireless? Which version is recommended?

Well since this was a question and answer forum on Razr HD I thought it would be helpful if anyone else had any experience with this phone version and if any hiccups occured. So I would know what to expect. Obviously I could just try and see what happens as you say but given that I would be voiding my warrenty when I do unlock, I just wanted to hear from others with this phone. Also from reading some posts on these forums I wouldn't say unlocking is without some risks as you say. But thanks for your insightful and helpful comment.

Hey
Yeah I used motochopper to root my phone. Didn't have any problems with that. I then tried motocopolyspe to unlock the phone and it went without a hitch. Motopocolypse does exactly what the official website would do. I was relieved that it was so painless. And the phone is working like a charm. No problems! I then installed TWRP. Didn't really have any problems with that other then getting a message that the image file was invalid. When I investigated the problem more I found for some reason the image file was not complete so I redownloaded it and it worked after that. I now have Cyanogenmod running on the phone since Saturday and so far things are running great and no crashes or resets! Going to play around it it more and let you know. Let me know if you need any help with the steps I took. So you have exactly same phone? On the Fido network?
hey!!!
yes sir...i have the exact phone as you and am on the rogers network. was relieved to see your post cuz i just received the phone last friday and am unfamiliar with motorola...have/had a samsung infuse and am much more familiar with the those rooting methods. i had asked on other threads about the process and have read up on rosenberg's tool that i have to root first then unlock but having read the ominous warnings on the moto site about unlocking i was hesitant to use that...i love the battery life on this thing but was concerned about the ease of customizing but if u say it worked for u i think i'll keep it and take the plunge lol. yeah that would be great if u could help out on the steps as well...
thx again!:good:

Ok so i'm am extremely new to this cell phone world. Long story short.. bought a Sprint white Samsung galaxy s3 which is upgraded to jelly bean 4.4.2 from a personal buyer.. Called sprint, her balance is outstanding and they have put the phones IMED number on the "bad esn" list. needless to say i couldn't put the phone on any carrier or sprint carrier til the balance was paid off.
So i did what anyone without a clue would do and i googled a way around it, and i got the "how to root/flash your Samsung galaxy s3 phone" Followed the instructions word for word.
Downloaded Odin
Downloaded team recovery and did NOT unzip the file.
- Put the Team Recovery Folder in my Phones internal memory
Download CMW file
- Put in the Odin slot for PA
Everything went according to plan. odio said it passed, i successfully flashed it, and i got to the boot loader and was able to install the team recovery. Phone rebooted.
The phone now had Superuser on it. clicked on it and a notice came up "unfortunately Superuser has stopped working"
So googled the problem and someone said to download "Root checker basic." Which came up with the error "Sorry! this device does not have proper root access."
So again i googled.. and go "download SuperSU" so i did... and got the message "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! ---If you just upgraded to android 4.3, you need to manually re-root consult the relevant forums for your device."
Sooo now i'm stuck.. because all i really want from this phone is: Pictures, Videos, Download game apps, Calling, Text, Web and WiFi.. not really interested in all the fancy ROM hacks. so far i have 5/7 the only problem is i don't have calling or text simply because i cant figure out how to put a Service carrier on my phone? do i buy a time card and enter the serial code in? do i call the straight talk company? Or did the root fail and i will never be able to put a cell phone carrier on the phone? at this point my knowledge about phone shows.. which is small. I have been reading for days. Yes i am getting to a point where i am comfortable with rooting.. but at this point i want to avoid a "brick" as much as possible.. and have no idea how to "re-root" a device that is already "rooted" without the fear of a "brick". So if anyone out there knows how to help please let me know. thanks so much

You can unroot your phone with Kingo and then root it again. BUT... rooting will not solve the problem of getting phone service. If I understood right, your IMEI is in black list and you can't call or send SMS, so to solve the problem you should change your IMEI, which is illegal. Chimera tool can do that, but if you will change your IMEI, then it'll be probably good idea to use one of your old phone's IMEI that is not in use, so it will not match with any other phones IMEI that are in use. Dial *#06# to see your IMEI.

Well I'm not sure, but I think that it can be identified if two exactly the same IMEIs are in use. If you will use your old phone's IMEI that is not in use, then it SHOULD be okay. I can tell you that I know a guy, who bought a phone and his IMEI went suddenly to black list. So he changed his IMEI which he took from his old phone and now it is okay and he has not been caught, even though he was a bit scared. You can be sure that there is no other exactly the same IMEI, if you take it from your old phone, but don't use your old phone anymore.
Do you know what version of supersu you tried? Had the same issue flashing cwm_supersu_v0.94.zip
Used update_supersu_v1.94.zip, went through the whole update binaries thing and it worked like a charm.

If I understood right, you already called sprint once and they know that you bought the phone. You can try to call them and discuss your situation, but I doubt that they will unlock the phone if they don't get the bill payed - still worth a try, because they know you have the phone. But if they want you to pay instead of someone else who should pay, then I would not agree to that.
Just in case, find their homepage, if it exists, where you should have an opportunity to check if your IMEI is indeed in blacklist.
I'm not usually one to make an account just to post and ask for help as I usually find it annoying on most forums I frequent, but at this point I am stuck.
I've tried the kingroot app, that didn't help. I used the desktop version, but it's in chinese and from what I could tell it wanted me to enable developer options, which I did, and it still wasn't registering my phone as being plugged in.
I've searched, and searched, google, here, a few other forums. From what I've pulled either this phone is nearly impossible to root or I'm just doing it wrong. I'd like to know what steps I need to take to root my phone, or if rooting this phone is even possible. Thank you very much for your help.

Do not follow or use anything that the other member posted for you. It is not for your device, you have the T-mobile(are you sure it isn't AT&T?) I337, not the I337M. They are totally different animals.
Verify which one you actually have.

Yeah I just figured that out. Thankfully I'm really paranoid about bricking my phone.. Anyway, this was originally an AT&T phone, but I switched over to t-mobile.
Edit: For clarifications sake this is an i337 not an i337m

Yes, I was pretty sure of that anyway, that's why I asked.
Try this thread below, it has many things for your device from Returning to stock via Odin, Downgrading to KK to root, Updating, etc..

Pay close attention to the rooting and consider the downgrade to root if you think you need to, I don't have the I337 so I haven't had to research that deep into it. Root on lollipop if you can or go back to kit kat if you have to as long as you understand it and you are sure it's safe, downgrading can cause problems but I don't think that applies in this case, I'm not 100% sure of that though. Good luck.
