Hi All, I'm working on a project to set up tablets for educational use. I'm trying to lock down the tablets as much as possible, so users will have access to the things they need, but can't change too much. I've been trying to use Nova Launcher, which has certain features that I need (and haven't found in other launchers eg auto-add apps).
Here's the issue: Even when the desktop is locked, the tablet user is still able to long press anywhere on the tablet and they'll get a message 'do you want to unlock? hold this lock icon to unlock the desktop'
I'm looking for a way to mod the launcher so it doesn't have this feature.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I've looked at tutorials on modding apks and have started the process to unpack etc, but don't really know where to go from there within the apk file.
Thanks!

Hey people, i have been looking under tree and rock to finde some sort of way to organize Apps in to folders, in the main menu. With no luck so far.
I am i just blind and stupid or have Android made the same mistake as apple did with no way of organizing applications (albiet, appels problem is a bit bigger than Android's).
Anything to help me keep my Main Menu Organized ??
Kind Regards

"main menu" being application launcher drawer/cube? Or home screen?
Stock application launcher drawer/cube doesn't have the option, and I fail to see why anyone would need such an option, given that -
1) Home screen supports folders.
2) There are plenty of apps that allow grouping applications in "folders" of some kind (virtual ones) on the home screen.
Your "main menu" is the home screen(s), not the application drawer.
How about 'Apps Organizer' from the market.
- You can set up categories
- Apps can be in multiple categories
- Assign custom or predefined icons to these
- Both widget and shortcut support to put these categories on your home screens
- Fave apps so they stick to the top in the folders
- Optionally have all folders/categories as subfolder from 1 main folder. Now that cleans up everything into a single icon.
It's a lifesaver if you use a ton of apps and want to stay organized imho.
nice apps organizer
for me it has been FolderOrganizer by Fabio Collini for quite some time...
After trying every app organizer I could find I settled on "tag home" to fix this problem. You can create tabs in the launcher, sort the apps by tab, prioritize the items in the tab sort them, have an app under multiple tabs, (easier than remembering if gmail is in internet or communication) and you can shortcut the tags onto the desktop as folders. plus, it's free in the market.
Just my 2 cents, and that's about all my advice is worth....

I am also looking for an efficent solution! But i think we have to wait until apple releases its OS4.0, which will be able to organize apps.
Then suddenly there will be apps developed for android who do the same thing. Its sad, that it has to be this way...

Why would you think that? There was Advanced Launcher for 1.6 that did this, and many home alternatives that do this. It's harder for rosie because it is closed source.
PS. You can make a folder on the home screen for a long time and dump applications into it, just like the magical iPhone can't do yet.

Advanced Launcher doesnt work at all.
Does Rosie mean Sense? (Sorry i just got my first android device)
I didnt find a decend Homescreen replacement that has this feature. Only Tag Home Launcher, but this app slows my phone down (very noticeable!).
The Replacements, which worked fine (for example ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro), didnt have the ability to sort apps in the draer/starmenu...
If you could point me to an working replacement I would be happy!!!
But, coming from windows mobile my experience is: nothing new is developed until apple does it and then sudenly the market is flooded with apps, that do this. ( I was looking for more finger usability since Windows Mobile 2003SE ^^). Of course there are few exceptions...
But please proove me wrong!
About the ability to create folders on the homescreen: I know this ability exists! But in my opinion one big advantage of android is the widgets on the homescreen. I like my homescreen to show me the time, my appointments, the weather...
For launching purpose i would like a simple menu with all my apps (categorizeed, sorted the way i want it )
the way I see it: the iphone has no homescreen it only has a launcher. But soon this launcher will get better than the one from android (now they are equally bad^^) and that is when i think apps will be released to overcome this differnce. But it should be the other way around...
But again: please proove me wrong!

And here is a video showing how apple implemeted it:

its low res, but i am sure there will soon be a better video...
So until I find the perfect solution I'm using the folders created for the on-screen but I'd like to be able to rename the folders. As an Android n00b is that possible?

To change the folder name:
-Open the folder.
-Touch and hold the bar at the top of the folder.
This should give you the "Rename folder" dialog box.
Good luck.
You my friends are the greatest!

well i have really been interested in customizing the look of my nexus one lately and i have gotten a few things done, still in the learning stage if i say so myself. any who, i have been trying out these different home replacements. i cant seem to find HelixLauncher2 in the market so i went on the internet to get the apk file. i install it but get force close every time i try to boot it up. is something wrong? im on 2.2
also, i have seen what people have done with launcher pro and i like. my question is, can i change the middle home button (with all the little boxes) of launcherpro or ADW launcher (my two favorite launchers) or even helix launcher if i can get it to work. i have seen it done and i want to do this to my phone n since im new to this whole home replacement customization, can some one tell me how to replace this middle icon or point me to a tutorial? this would be really helpful to me
HL and HL2 use "private" APIs and are also not compiled for 2.2. Therefore, you'll get an FC-loop
You can change the middle icon in adw or launcher pro if you have the know how...it's easy, just look up adb stuff and learn to pull, push, and copy files.

well i been lookin around for a bit and nothing. i read the noob article about adb but are there any instructions specifically set for the middle icon??
Pull the apk, update the image files (use storage, no compression), push the apk, restart launcher. I won't go into signing, but some launchers may require it. Nandroid often.

Hi everyone, noob here.
I come to you for advice after exhausting my ability to Google properly.
I have an idea for a homescreen project and I will try to describe it as clearly as possible. I am running a Motorola triumph with cm7.
I saw a screenshot of someone's phone which I am hopeless to find again.
HERES WHAT I WANT:
On my main homescreen I want shortcut links to other homescreens that are organized by function (work, communication, social, gaming). I would like those shortcuts to be text-based, but larger than the standard icons.
As far as I can tell, only adwlauncher ex has shortcuts to other screens. I don't want to swipe, nor zoom out to a view of all screens to select.
The reason adw bothers me is that there is seemingly no way to change the size of icons. I downloaded desktop visualizer but it does not give me the option to choose one of adws "screen 1,2,3" shortcuts to configure.
In the simplest terms, I want adws screen shortcut links with the ability to resize or change them. Maybe I'm missing something simple (this is my first Android and I've only had it for maybe 45 days so that's probably likely), but I wanted to seek advice from the best forum for information.
Thank you for following my meandering mind, if you have any questions I will try to clarify.
James
I hope it's OK, I don't want to make a bad impression, I want to bump this thread.
Have you tried folders I have four system media tools games with hundreds of apps between them.
There's an app called smart shortcuts that organizes stuff all so.

Is it possible on android to make your own lockscreen from scratch, or at least a custom combination type thing because I've had an idea for something that would be nicer then a numeric lock but less of a failure then pattern.
* In retrospect I probably should've scrolled down to android section, oh well.
Yes, is possible but you must know programing in java..
Been doing java for a couple years, could you point me to a reference or something that its been done before?
Well, you could go learn Java programming language and go from there, or you can use an app called WidgetLocker. It's free in the Play Store but there is also a paid version available for purchase. With this App you can change the slider on your lock screen and also add widgets like you would on your homescreen. You can also add app shortcuts to it. If you'd like to download more slider options go to this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968613
There are hundreds of options to choose from. Just download it to your computer then drag it into your phones SD card and it should show up in the slider options. I hope this helps you out!
Y'know I know you probably want to get your 10 posts going and all but I see nothing in your reply that has anything to do with the original statement.
Sorry EphemeralMirage if no one has been of great help to you lately, I think he was just trying to help you and he was just trying to be nice. He didn't clearly understand your question, but being a bit nice to others would help in this forum.
You should probably check this guide out, have a look at it and see if it looks like what you need.

Thanks that looks like what I'll reference, as soon as I get the source stuff hammered out and all.
If you are looking to actually create your own way to unlock the screen
that is different than taking a stock method and changing the graphic.
It was something that I was going to look into, but I haven't got that far.
In the Nook, the screen unlockers are implemented in /system/framework/android.policy.jar
There are apparently three of them already:
LockScreen - the standard slide to unlock
LockPinKeyguardView - a four digit pin
LockPatternKeyguardView - apparently a pattern lock
So theoretically just use the source for that, add in yours and see what happens?
Then again that might be easier said then done, into AOKP I go!

Check this website to make some basic apps. it is very useful for the beginners.

I was wondering if it's possible to make the panel persistent. I'd like it to be visilbe all the time instead of autohiding when entering apps. Is this even possible with root or custom rom?
Not a whole lot of mods for the Edge. Best mod I've seen is RuggedHunter's AutoCocktail. Search RuggedHunter in the play store. Also that 24hr night clock mod...
Seems like having the panel fully visible would block stuff.
That's pretty cool, even though it's not what I'm looking for. I wonder if it would be difficult to make by myself. I'm a programmer but never tried android modding. When edge panels are active on the home screen, they don't block stuff, maybe that would be possible in normal apps ass well. Is there any developer who could at least give me any hint where to start or if this is even possible to do? I found a simple workaround for this. If you'll start popup window and make it as big as possible, you can use both app and screen all the time. Perhaps it would be possible to force apps to launch as popup which would take entire homescreen except edge?
