How much pressure can a screen take? Can I rest my head on it? - General Questions and Answers

Not as weird as it may seem
At night I listen to music/radio while I go to sleep. I use a cheap phone at the moment but was thinking about getting a 2012 Nexus 7 that I can use for this (and actually use it as a tablet as well)
Will it be okay if it's under my pillows or will the weight/pressure damage the screen?
Thanks in advance :good:

Lol your tablet will be fine haha unless you're head is the size of 3 watermelons and weighs 50 pounds then but seriously it won't cause any problems

the question is more about how much damage will the mobile make to your head if the wifi/cell network is running trough your head all night?
except you run radio by earphone receiver with airplane mode on..then never mind

You should be fine. Did that on a plane once, the biggest damage was the droll lol.

I use a quality speakerpillow, it has a long enough lead that I don't risk the phone/tablet and I can rest directly on the speaker and keep volume low and not disturb my partner.

Ha ha... That is really a funny question. But it should be answered. It won't damage your phone unless you move the pillow below your head above your tablet. Use a good cushioned pillow though.
And yes, do turn the airplane mode on. Radiations are not good for your brain. (I'm not expecting more such questions :laugh Just kidding brother.
Ohhh God. Why are we discussing about it? Doesn't it come with Gorilla Glass?

Probably you will have to worry not tossing the phone down to the floor while you sleep.

why you just don't do that and but your phone beside your below

Just buy a quality pillow speaker , then you dont have to worry about getting tangled up in headphones cables aswell

I really wouldn't worry about it for clarifications sake and a technical answer to your questions your main concerns would come from the stress your head would apply to your phones screen. More particularly the relation between the compressive force your head creates and the maximum compressive strength of the material in question before failure of that material under load. (Stress= F/A) The Nexus 7 uses Corning Gorilla Glass which has a maximum compressive strength of 800 MPa. That's 224,808.944 pound-forces per meter^2 and your head does not exert anywhere near that number.
Like I said you really have nothing to worry about you won't damage your screen by laying it under your pillow.

I'm surprised no one brought up the very real possibility of overheating. Sure, you can rest your head on it - but you're smothering it under a pillow and not allowing for the heat it will generate to dissipate.
It would be especially bad if you were charging at the same time - and either way not something I'd recommend anyone do. Why shorten the lifespan of your device by exposure to high internal temperatures if there are other options (like using it with a pillow speaker instead).

Or you could get a wireless headset?

Does your Raphael heat up while talking?

I have noticed a major heating sometimes when making a phonecall, and I mean it becomes really hot...
Im not using the GPS what seems to be causing overheating to some users.
also please post your radioversion etc if you have this type of problems...
Make sure you don't hold the phone near where the battery is. If you look at the manual you will be exposed to dangerously high radiation levels! If you cover it with your finger or hand the phone module goes into high power mode which could account for the heat problem.
Well yes I did some investigating and it does not happen always. I think it could be happening when taking a phone call after charging. By this I don’t mean it’s hot when unplugging the device, it keeps getting hotter and hotter while speaking.

What, my package and manual are put away. Sorry, I didn’t understand 100%, where I can’t place my finger exactly?
I looked at the manual and did not find anything unusual… What did you mean?
There is a wiki nearby, with links to the on-line manuals
(the part below the battery is where the antenna is )
Ok now that you said antenna I found the part from the manual, if you look at the previous post he says only don’t hold your finger near the battery…. The battery is ½ of the phone…
But seriously am I the only one that thinks this is TOTALLY crazy that if you hold your phone normally from the bottom half you will be exposed to DANGEROUS LEVELS OF RADIATION??? I have had mobiles for 15 years and this is the first one that cant be held in your hand without looking how you hold it…
Are others also experiencing overheating sometimes?
Yep, I said 'battery' - if you look at the picture in the manual (page 10 - see attachment below). The danger zone is bottom 1/3 of the back surface area.
As far as i'm concerned this device should not have had certification and approval for use because NORMAL handling includes the bottom part of the phone. They expect you to be at least 1.5cm away from it too so in practical terms it is extremely difficult and inconvenient to hold. If you hold the top part your palm will cover or get near the bottom anyway so their constraint is ridiculous.
I wasn't aware of this when I first used the phone and I remember my fingers getting hot with a sharp pain.
This device should therefore NOT have safety approval because the context of operation does not include normal and reasonable handling.
So you have to ask yourself: is the HTC Touch Pro worth getting cancer over?
Yes I found that page after I searched the manual "antenna"... That just sounds crazy to me...
But still I don’t know did the SERIOUS overheating I had resulted from that. I couldn’t replicate it... It could be it was caused by the charging before I answered.
I have to pay more attention to that, because I think I had it happen before also.
excuse me, topspeclt, but if you are that worried, why do you use a mobile phone
The top of the phone got really hot. The steel around the camera lens was so hot I could not keep my finger over it… I don’t know, am I the only one experiencing this type of behaviour?

I used a Nokia N73 prior to this and no probs. So I'm in for a little dosage. But the handling contraint with the TP is a joke. I end up using the headset now because I can't maintain the ridiculous holding position without receiving hazardous SAR levels.
My observation is one that affects ALL users of the HTC TP and not necessarily other brands.
Had I known this BEFORE I bought the HTC TP I would have skipped it. Damn good for nothing 'Reviewers'.

That doesn't sound right at all. My TP doesn't get that hot. You might want to swap it (if you can) or call HTC support.
I have to duplicate it and see when exactly it happens…
I’ve noticed it happening few times, but didn’t pay that much attention to it because I use the HF when I’m not home. I started to use that a year ago when there was more talk about the radiation. I talk about 2hrs a day, so the tumours are probably on their way already. Its much more convenient anyway to use the HF.
I got full warranty so I will chance the device when I have confirmed this.
I have to say also that I came from Kaiser WAY too soon… I should have given the real cooks and wizards of XDA few months to find and fix the major bugs for HTC (mind you, they are doing it for FREE to them). I just got a too good of a deal; I got this device almost for the price of my old Kaiser.
No one is experiencing heating around the camera flash/lens area when talking?
Plase confirm so I know do I need to return the device.
I have the same problem sometimes. But it is not conected to making phonecalls. I expreienced this temperture phenomen while browsig the web (wifi) and I think some other situations.
I'll keep an eye on that problem and let you know when it happens again.
I had this problem with my xda orbit 2 as well (when using tomtom while the phoen was plugged in for chargching)

Perhaps a visit to HTC service centre?
I haven't had this extreme heating yet.
The TP becomes warm while charging, GPS use, Wifi, and even calls, but not to that extend that you can burn your fingers on the lense area.
I think your TP has a hardware problem.

My first TP have battery problem and really heat up at the camera metal area when using call/apps. I got a replacement and the new unit don't heat up so fast or so much.
First of all, I don't think that you can possibly expose yourself to any dangerous levels of radiation, no matter how you hold your TP. The SAR tests are done anyway with maximum transmit power, so if you hold your phone from the bottom part and so impair the reception the phone gets, you can only get the official specified SAR levels at most. It does increase battery usage (hence not recommended), as the phone needs to use more transmit power, but the SAR levels are definitely safe - always at or below spec. The design were the phone antenna is at the bottom of the phone is actually very advantageous from SAR point of view, because the antenna element is further away from your brain --> less radiation. However, I do agree that for best reception (holding the phone from the upper part) the handling of the phone is a bit awkward. HTC probably just put the "dangerous levels of radiation" warning there to keep off any possible Americans waiting to sue their a**
Also, looking at the back part of my TP, it seems that the Wifi and GPS antennas are at the top of the phone, so getting hot around the camera lens/upper area while using these features should be expected. Again, I think this is actually quite a good setup, as the phone and wifi/gps antennas are as far away from each other as possible, thus interference between different antennas is kept minimal.
Oh yeah, and you should definitely not burn your fingers on your phone, there's something wrong if you really did (it can get quite warm, but not that hot).
Just my 0.02
My TP aint that warm, but it does get a little warm when playing games but not hot, only a bit warm.

Hd2 Screams when dropped (IDEA)

So, may be this is dumb, i thought of it last nite though..
You know that feeling, you just pulled you phone out of your pocket a tick too fast, or tred to do somethihg else at the same time, and it slips... those moments between your device leaving your hand, and it meeting the ground are lasting for hours... and theres nothing you can do.
but maybe this will make it a little better (probably) so that if you drop your phone, or you g sensor detects 0-g, (zero gravity , as would be by free falling) that it would activate an app that has a voice and it would scream in terror.
it sounded better last nite after a couple drinks.. a couple more dirnk it its gonna start sounding better again.
but i thought it would be fun... keeping it running in the background, overrides any system sounds and would play on the speaker loudly. ...
but , just an idea.
would be cool to see in action though.
thanks for listening!

i would test it if someone would write it, but i don't wanna mess up my system, because i'm not exactly an expert in ROM flashing (Ive never done it before) and things like this, so if something goes wrong, i am gonna need help to fix it.
of course i wouldnt drop my phone on the street, but onto a bed or something for testing/playing with it.

LOL
Sooo.... many people would actually run an app, for ever, eating memory and CPU cycles, as well as keeping the phone permanently out of standby (needed to continuously sample the sensor) thus reducing battery life to about 15hrs max without touching it, just so that in the event they dropped their phone one day in the couple of years they'll have it it would scream during half a second before hitting the ground and breaking?
I wonder where the world is going...
Nice idea, but
Honestly, I wouldn't mind developing that one. Sounded easy at first too. But think, the accelerometer meaures 2 axis ( if i'm not mistaken ). How could you tell the device is on a free fall? When it falls, it usually spins, so, tecnically as far as the sensors are concerned it's not on a free fall, as the sensor reads some values, that are consistent with some one handling the device. So, the risk in developing an app like this is having an app that gets the phone to scream whenever it's moved, or never scream at all (not even when falling!)
But please, do prove me wrong ^^. Cause regarding accelerometers i've only worked with the iPhone SDK (Yeah, i kno, but it's job related).

All axes = 0 (or close to it).
Opps, my bad about the number of axis.
But still, all axis at 0? seriously doubt that, since the device usually doesnt fall on a perfectly vertical trajectory. It usually spins around...
At least, when on the G Sensor calibration tool i can see the meters moving around when i throw my device up in the air :S

well, then one could maybe develop the program to read erratic behavoir, when all the sensors are spinning, (?) because to do that my mistake isn't easy i imagine, and it would maybe also activate when bouncing around in a bag(purse, briefcase, who knows what...) in any case, it would scream when in situations that aren't healthy for the phone. (running to catch the train and its bouncing in your backsack for example)...
we now have a purpose to this app... (other than scaring the **** out of you twice ((your phone is about to break, and its screaming!)) HA!
It will probably spin around, but normally not so much as to create close to 1g. It obviously depends on the position of the accelerometer in the device, and I don't know where it is in the HD2. But supposing it's in the most defavorable position (at the edge, 6cm from CG) simulating gravity would mean the phone would have to spin 2 revolutions per second. With greatly reduced effect if it's actually closer to the CG.

Leaving Phone in Hot Car

I'm going on a backpacking trip, and I would like to bring my phone to use in the car on the trip there and back (it's something like 5 hours each way, so I would like to have something to do in the car).
I would like to leave my phone in the car during the actual trip (2 days). I know that heat can be bad for a phone, but would leaving my phone in the car be a bad idea? What's the best location for it? Trunk, glove compartment, under a seat?
The high for each day is listed as 80F, low of 50-60F, and the car most likely will be parked in at least partial shade.
Does anyone have experience with this / any recommendations?
Depends on how hot your car actually gets, which will depend on how much shade you're actually talking about. It's not just a matter of the electronics, it can also be the possibility of adhesives in the phone softening if the heat is too high. If possible I'd just find somewhere safe to keep it in your gear and take it with you.
Oh man, 80 degrees in the shade is nothing, well at least not to me since it gets up to over 100 here. Putting it in the trunk will keep it cooler because it won't be exposed to any sunlight.
Yeah, keeping it out of direct sunlight is key. I kept an old iPhone 3G in my car at all times (played music off it) in North Carolina, even in the mid-90 degree summers, and have never had any issues with it aside from the screen perhaps getting a little washed out. I would just stick it in the glove compartment on particularly hot days.

I've actually read reports that the trunk can get just as hot or close to the same temp as the inside of the car. on a 95 Deg day it could be 120 in the trunk :/
Turn it off when you leave it in the car.
Sent from a digital distance.
yeah at least turn it off, because the battery will live longer though
Sorry I never responded sooner.
I just got back from the trip, and everything worked out great. I left the phone in the trunk of the car, parked in the shade, and there were no problems when I got back. This is at least partially due to the shade and the cool-ish weather.

[Q] hibernation mode?

I was wondering if there is a way to put my tf700 tablet in hibernation mode so I can basically completely turn the tablet off or hibernate it with minimal battery and electronic usage and then quickly boot it up again? my question is similar to the thread linked below. I have a custom carrying case for my tablet and although it works really well, it holds my tablet right on top of my spine which I can only imagine how the emf is affecting my nervous system in that area. I would like to be able to minimze emf on my tablet when im holding it on my back without having to turn it completely off because it takes forever to turn on. please let me know if you guys know of an app or way to do this

Well if your located in the US the meters are cheap like the one above.
I have a microwave oven RF leakage meter from a former job that I got for around 10 bucks.
Or you could put RF shielding foil in your backpack if your really serious about this.

I doubt anything changes the level of radioactivity! It's clearly not radioactive. A geiger counter will just register background radiation.....
Anyway - once the tab is sleeping it is doing that unless something wakes it. After a period of time it will go into a deep sleep.
Today's devices hardly emit anything dangerous.
Just walking outside bombards us with emissions from so many sources.
Stay away from airports, cell towers, wifi routers, police\fire vehicles, plasma tvs, microwave ovens, nuclear power plants, other people on mobile phones...

How do I know? It's obvious. Well I majored in physics but other than that background it doesn't contain any radioactive materials..... All substances emit some degree of radioactivity but not at the levels that are in any way dangerous.
Funnily enough when I was in Japan last month they now sell add on geiger counters for iphones.... Didn't see any for androids though
I have done a quick look up on 'bioenergetics' which is what the op is concerned about. It is a philosophy not a science and I do not believe he needs to be concerned with how the transformer handles electro magnetic field radiation if he turns off all radios and puts the device to sleep with auto sync turned off as it will enter a deep sleep soon enough.
I also think he is blasted with more emf radiation daily just being alive and can't avoid it. My advice is buy a gauss meter, take some readings and come back with actual facts to support your theory.
He has also confused radiation with radioactivity. You don't heed a geiger counter you need a gauss meter.

[Q] Tegra K1 chip making noise

Last night I was using my shield tablet and I heard a noise when I touched the screen...thought it might be the speakers so I turned them down and could still hear it, so I put my ear to back of tablet and can hear buzzing when the screen is touched or when an app is running, and it I play a high graphic game its pretty loud.
Is this normal sound of the K1 processor? Anyone else had this before? Wanna know do I need to return it or not!
Thanks

been reading about this and couldn't stop until i found a satisfactory answer, so i kept digging and found this :
" This 'whine' or 'squeal' is the sound of these things ( inductors, coils or chokes ) physically vibrating, and it is a sign that they are poorly insulated. However this does not mean they have a shorter lifespan than a coil that does not whine and you really shouldn't lose sleep over it.
Why do they only whine when the PC is under load? What you're hearing is an effect of the PWM frequency, and as you pull more current through the inductor it induces a greater magnetic field in itself and in turn vibrating more aggressively.
Will it go away? Well, Possibly. My 8800GT squealed like a piglet in a housefire for months, and one day the noise disappeared completely. Either some characteristics of the circuit had changed or the windings in the coil had shifted.
Can you stop it? As most people know, you can stop inductors whining by chucking hot glue at them, putting high voltage putty around them, or soaking them in resin and waiting for them to set. Most (apart from PSU) inductors in PCs are covered anyway, so you can't properly silence them.
"
cheers
