[Q] AOSP wireless tether disconnects - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I am running PACMAN rom and have been for a while now, i have never had this problem until recently.
my wife and I use my phone for the internet around the house and just recently it's started getting weird. It will be perfect then randomly the tether will drop and all our connected devices will have to reconnect.
It doesnt close the app, and only takes a minute for my laptop to reconnect (not a big deal), on the other hand when im playing xbox it is a whole different story, oh man does this bother me, it has rendered xbox live practically useless. if any one has any ideas please let me know.
I am on the latest radio, and i update PACMAN almost everyday, and run the kernel that comes with PAC. also this is using the wifi tether that comes with PAC, i believe it is CM's wifi tether.
any help would be awesome to my wife and my self.
Thank you.

[Q] Wifi at home issue

Hi Everyone.
I am not a developer nor really tech savy, but I do know how to adjust a few things. Anyways, I just got my Infuse 4G, loving it so far except at my home. I have really fast internet connection and my router is new and is Cisco. My laptop, desktop and tablet all work really well. My infuse though will connect and tells me that it has a really strong wifi connection, but I can't open anything for **** such as a browser or market app. It works fine at work and at any att wifi hot spots.
Can anyone advice me on this? Sometimes though, it works fine but about 85 % of the time at home, I can't open any internet connection although it says that I am connected to wifi.
I am about 5 days close to returning this if this problem can't be resolved.
Any help will be really and greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Probably your router. If it's Linksys-branded Cisco of the "saucer" form factor - find something better. Linksys-branded Cisco hardware sucks these days.
I suggest finding a router that is supported by DD-WRT - I have always been disappointed when running routers with closed-source factory firmware.

I would think that if it works well at work and att hot spots that this would point to ot being an issue with the home router.
Have you tried resetting the router?

resetting meaning turning it off and wait for a few minutes and turning it back on?
No, but if that was the case, my other devices shouldn't work neither no?

Some routers are buggy and don't play well with some devices.
90% of the time it's the router's fault.

Wifi Issue: sell GT7 or wait for ICS

Dear seasoned Xda members,
I love my GT7+ and have enjoyed the versatility of the Android Os (my first device). As I carry the device around and (attempt to) use it at work the size is perfect. However, I have terrible issues with the WIFI. At home there is no issue - but I work in a hospital, and the device is only good for me if it can get WIFI.
Well... in the hospital it will connect to both the "guest" wifi and the "secure" wifi (for which my device has been setup), but in both cases the connection just "dies" after about 2 minutes. The only way to get on again it by re-booting the device.
I had hoped that all of the firmware updates would address the issue - and I have read that some routers are troublesome for the GT7+. Unfortunately I will have little control over what routers are being used.
The device is no use to me if I can't use it at work - and Im wondering if I should sell it or if ICS will resolve the Wifi issue.... I would appreciate any guidance even if its speculation.
[btw the device is entirely stock, not rooted, and using ADW instead of TW]
Cheers!
Here's samsung's ics update list.http://androidandme.com/2012/02/devices/official-samsung-android-4-0-update-list/. You'll probebly have to wait until Q2 or Q3 for ICS, unless someone ports CM9.

I guess it was my fault to get the WIFI only version thinking it would be easy to switch between networks. Seems like a bug that they should have wrinkled out before shipping a "Wifi-only" device.
In any case, if anyone is looking for another device to play with - shoot me an email (aliota [at] gmail.com)
I had the same issue prior. I bought this Tab twice and with both devices the same thing happened at work aswell. At home it was working perfect. At work any wireless connected but dropped in like 2 minutes. Very Frustrating. I was actually thinking of picking it up again assuming the issue had been fixed..

Have you tied to do a factory reset on the device and then reconfigure the wifi connections? I bounce between many wireless networks during my day and the connection is stable.
I did have a few reboots until I set the wifi to turn off with the screen and never to turn off when charging, now the device is rock solid.
I believe that once ICS is dropped there will be some custom firmwares (ROMS) available for the device. Every new device I see posts like this where there is one feature or another that is flaky, once the developers start working their wonders on it the device becomes wonderful. The biggest hold up right now for development is the WiFi driver. Based on history of other devices, eventually that will be overcome as well.

Interesting... I've tried this in the past without any luck, but will try again. I really want to keep the device because it is quite powerful and the 7" size makes it much more portable than a 10"+ tablet.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have noticed some wifi issues with mine also but they dont seem to big of a deal for what I use mine for. I would really recommend keeping it as it is duel-core, lightweight, can even fit in some pockets.
But rather you keep it or not I suppose depends what you use your tablet for mostly I suppose.

USB tether 4g never works correctly? AOSP

I've tried every AOSP Rom/Kernel variations and I can't get anything to stay USB 4g tethered for more then 5 minutes. Tshed was flying with stock CM7 USB tether and then all of the sudden doesn't work. I tried all AOSP Roms. And wired-tether 1.4 is what I use. Please help me out. I have this phone for another year and that's all I'm missing. Please help. A trick, known set up, etc maybe. Anything not to have to reset the app every 3-5 minutes or so. I can't believe I haven't seen this brought up lately? Is it only me?

Have u tried pda net?

Yeah u have to install software on every PC u wanna use and that kinda sucks but I still get the frequent resets and they're connection is pretty slow. I have to reset pdanet, wired-tether 1.4, etc. Every few minutes. I used watershed 1.2 cm7 stock USB tether and it worked beautifully for about a day and then nothing. So I flashed imo's kernel and stock tether doesn't work at all but I have to reset wired-tether 1.4 every 3-5 minutes or so.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using Tapatalk
I don't use USB tethering often, but when I do, the built in version always works perfectly. Tried it on OMFGB, liquid AOSP, and workshed CM7. An older version of Imo's kernel (version 4 I think) supports USB tethering.

I use easy tether and have no issues. For wifi tether I use opengarden (faster than USB tether) don't have issues with either.
And its only when I try to use 4G. 3G will stay tethered all day long if i let it but its just way to slow. I usually get 15-20 Mbps down with USB tether 4g. Thats fast as hell. I wish I had a little Porto WiFi adapter for my work PC's. Cuz yeah when I wifi tether my AOKP TouchPad I dont have this problem.
There may be something wrong specifically with his ROM. I have USB Tethering working fine on my Sense-based ROM, but I tried his and it would work for 15 seconds and stop working, then never reconnect. I tried having something persistently connected to internet on my phone but that didn't help either.
I use the ClockworkMod Tether. Works on every ROM I've tried.
I was hoping I wasn't gonna have to resort to sense but I might have
to. I need this to just work. No installer PC ware

Ive tried my Phenom2 x6 and 2 Diff. Core 2 Duo's (that's just my House).
A few Newer laptops. Wifi tether worked no problem, just alot slower then straight USB (when it works).
There were a few at work I tried and No good either.
Back when I first started bringing up this issue (Sept.) I was told It was a known 4g issue (By a great Dev who has since moved to the Razor, hint hint) and that's why there is no problem with 3 g tethering at all. Just wondering If someone had a set up that completely works with out having to reset every 5 Min or so. I think I had good Luck with ThunderShed 1.3 this weekend. I fell asleep FTPing some stuff from my friend (good size) and It was finished when I woke up. That's a good sign so far. I just need one person to see this thread that has the perfect setup for 4G USB Tethering, 24/7 if need be. It would be great to know.

I always just used the built in wired tether with cm7. I had an issue once where it would drop in and out, but after doing a total reset and reloading cm7 once again, it was fine. I also don't use the DNS with the phone. I switch my DNS on my PC to be layer3 DNS (4.2.2.1 to 4.2.2.6). DNS is allegedly one of the ways they can track what device the transfer is coming from.

This could be big help. Im at work now but when I get home I will check into this more. Thanks so much. I can never get the built in USB tether to work from CM7. TShed's built in CM7 worked for a while then just cut out. The little name your connection from Win7 popped up but had no Internet at all. May be something to this. Thank you.

Might also try disabling IPv6 and anything else not needed on the connection as it won't actually tether through it anyways. It could be causing a conflict somehow

So you are running which cm7. I am now running TShed 1.3 and stock tether was great for about 20 minutes. Then just stopped. So turned off tether reset mobile data and 3g 4g. Nothing. Not even wired 1.4 works. Rebooted a few times, I've been at this for bout an hour now and still nothing. Not even wired 1.4. So I switched from auto to 4.2.2.1-4.2.2.6 DNS. Thanks for that bit of info. Now do I have to do that every time? Anyway I'm frigging stuck here and I hear all these people's are working fine.

If you set the DNS on your PC, it should stay that way. You can always verify if you need to. But yeah, I used cm7 and the built in tether just fine.

So every time my USB connection starts it gives me a new Connection(I'm up to like number 54. So I have to go in and set the DNS and disable ipv6 every time? How do I get my USB tether settings to stick on my Win7 Ultimate x64 every time I start my tether instead of it thinking its a brand new connection every time? I got ThunderShed 1.3(stock kernel) installed now and the stock tether isn't working but the wired-tether 1.4 is working great after a couple resets. It must have stuck for a few hours until I shut it off. That's great considering how bad of a time Ive been having.

Now do you see how that "Thanks" button works? yareally is really trying to help me and has helped some, so I have hit the "Thanks".
That's how the "Thanks" button works.

Not sure why it keeps changing your connection number. It's never done that to me unless I've flashed a new ROM or something when I've used it on windows 7. Turning off and turning back on your wifi device might also do it (the one attached to your PC).

Google or Zyxel? WFi issues on Android devices only

The Problem: WiFi disconnects every time i am barely downloading anything or just watching youtube, and re connects, and so on.
WiFi Modem: Zyxel P-2812HNU-F3
Ever since i bought Galaxy Nexus back in December 2011, I have had WiFi issues 24/7. I thought it was a hardware problem, but then i went to my friends house and tried his WiFi and it worked great. He had a linksys modem while I had Zyxel. Back then i honestly didnt think that the Zyxel modem could be the problem. Thats because i had Galaxy S 2 before Nexus and that phone worked great. But SGS2 was on 2.3. So i thought that Google ****ed up when they released ICS. I still do, for some of us. If you have the time, please look at this thread in Galaxy Nexus forum, where we discussed the problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386884
Long story short, i tried changing lot of things in router but nothing worked. When 4.1 was available for my Nexus, i downloaded it without even thinking that there might be a WiFi fix because i had given up on WiFi. I used 3g until 4.1 was out. Anyways, a few days after i had installed 4.1 i turned on WiFi and run a test in Speedtest app. Speed was great. But the thing i worried about was WiFi being disconnected. So i tried downloading a gameloft game and no diconnect. The whole game downloaded fine. But after a few hours later i noticed after downloading some movies it sometime disconnected and reconnected. I was mad at google again. But JB was much, MUCH better then ICS. Atleast i can use my WiFi now. Sometimes it works, other times it wont.
Yesterday i got my Transformer Infinity. This device is on 4.0.3. The first thing i did when setting up device, was downloading speedtest. I ran it, and it had the same problem that ICS on my Nexus had. I began to search again why this happens in ICS. I downloaded WiFiFix manager but that didnt help at all. Many other zips and apps didnt help either. So... Today, or tonight i opened up router page and started changing wpa2 to wps, like i did months ago for Nexus. But nothing helped. Then i wanted to try omething i havent done before, so i changed 802.11b/g/n to g only. Now WiFi works greta on my Infinity and Nexus. No disconnects at all! (lol i so hope that this is a permanently fix)
I dont know how that will effect my other devices, mostly PCs. So is this a Zyxel issue or Android? WiFi with n works normal with my PCs and other android devices. This must be because of 4.0+, right? I dont think its a hardware issue at all because my Infinity behaves same way.
Should i stay on 802.11g or is there something i can do to fix my devices to work with 802.11n?
Or is there a way i can enable 802.11g for Infinity and Nexus only, and use 802.11n for the rest?

Mobile Hotspot function properly on stock S3?

My thunderbolt is dying and I need a new phone. The S3 for Verizon looks to be the winner. Just need to know if the stock hotspot works well because on the thunderbolt it would always disconnect after 5-10 mins of usage. I need a reliable connection for wifi on the road. I'm going to leave the phone unrooted and stock for a while until I know it's all good so that is why I am asking about the mobile hotspot functionality.
Thanks.
I'm stock rooted and use the hotspots app nightly for me and 5 others at work to tether too. Occasionally the apps stops communicating, I need to just toggle the app, turn it off then on again. Then it works fine again, only happens once every few days of tethering. We all tether fine. Some as far as 60+ feet away, work in cubical enviornment, no walls. Yeah they don't get full bars. But I've heard no real complaints from anyone.
