Anyone have straight talk? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to the prepaid game. I just ordered my nexus 5.
Now I want to get straight talk because I hear its att or Verizon towers?..
Anyway.. Is there a special sim or settings I will need to order or can I get it from Walmart?

Your Nexus 5 can't connect to Verizon, but no worries. StraightTalk can connect to either AT&T or T-Mobile depending on which sim card you choose. Make sure you check coverage to see which suits you best.
The Nexus 5 takes a Micro sim card.

I just activated my Nexus 5 with straight talk over the weekend. I got a BYOP kit from Walmart, which has 4 SIM cards: 2 regular SIM (for AT&T and T-mobile towers) and 2 micro SIM (AT&T and T-mobile). You need the pick the micro SIM of the service provider that you want to use.
To activate, just go the straight talk website. The kit has $45 1 month unlimited talk, text and data card with a service PIN. You would need to enter the serial number of the SIM and the service PIN to activate the service. You can choose to get a new number or port an existing number. I ported mine from Verizon and it took only a few hours.
You would also need to enter the APN settings from the straight talk website. There is a flashable zip here in the forums that can help automate the process or you can enter them manually. After you enter the APN settings, LTE should be functional. You may need to reboot the phone.
My Nexus 5 works perfectly with straight talk with AT&T as the service provider.

Any speed test? Also the zip can you post link?

One big issue with Straight Talk
Not sure why nobody else is mentioning it in the forums but I just discovered that Straight Talk severely limits video streaming on LTE or 4G. Trying to watch a video on Youtube is pretty useless since it will keep stopping every 3-4 seconds to buffer and will never pre-load any of the video. But if you switch your phone to 3G, Youtube works like normal. I can't deal with this problem so I'm dropping Straight Talk very soon.

[Q]Verizon i535 on straight talk?

Can it be done? If so, how?
Here is the various information I have to far. The Verizon galaxy s3 uses both CDMA and GSM.
My father has a Verizon Iphone 5 he unlocked and put on straight talk. The iphone 5 uses both CDMA and GSM and is 4G just like my S3. Theoretically it should work the same, right? WRONG. I have yet to be able to find a site or program that can unlock my i535. Even if I could get it to unlock, would I need to also flash the cdma portion over to straight talk?
I borrowed the SIM card from a friends T-mobile S3 and without doing ANYTHING to my phone I was able to make calls and send texts with her SIM card in my phone,no data though.
The i535 has a "global mode" which essentially allows me to switch between the classic Verizon LTE-CDMA mode and a GSM mode for use outside of the U.S. Is that only good for making calls? do I even need to unlock my phone in order to use straight talk on my handset?
I have searched a ton of Forums and must be blind, because I cannot find a single how-to video or good explanation on how this is done. I HAVE found, however that there are a lot of people out there who are just like me who are trying to find out, and they get dead threads, mis-information and vague "It may work..." Any help or information that ANYONE can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah I don't see it as a priority item for any dev to create something so a great phone with the best network coverage would half work on straight talk. Straight talk has android phones appropriate for their network I would suggest selling your verizon phone and buying the straight talk phone.

Is the hardware the same between the Verizon and the at&t s3? Can I flash the at&t rom to my Verizon s3? Will it brick the phone for good or can I flash it back?
Straight Talk runs the Galaxy S3 on Sprint network rather than Verizon. Your best luck would be trading the Verizon S3 for a Sprint S3 and going from there... or even trading the Verizon S3 for an actual Straight Talk S3. I'm pretty sure the LTE is a different frequency that you won't be able to get working right. I know there is a way to get a Verizon S3 on AT&T and T-Mobile with edge data... but not Sprint.
Long story short, I don't think it will be able to work unless you get either a Straight Talk or Sprint S3.

[Q] Nexus 5 with AT&T GoPhone

i currently have a nexus 4. i walked into a retail att store and asked for a microsim card and they handed one over free of charge. first off, i'd like to clarify if this sim will work in a nexus 5. is there an LTE specific sim that i'll need? or can i just swap from the n4 to the n5?
second, i'm currently using the $60/month gophone plan. i had to spoof an s4 imei with customer service in order to get proper hspa+ speeds. can i just leave everything as is (assuming my sim is good to go for a simple swap) and i'll get LTE speeds? well, not leave quite everything... i assume i'll need to switch from the phone to the pta apn, but other than that, will i be good to go?
i wanna be sure my transition to the n5 goes as smoothly as possible.
You should be good to go.
If they provisioned your current micro SIM for an S4 then you would already have the LTE SOC associated with that SIM.
All you need to do is pop in your SIM once you get the Nexus 5 and enter the right APN and you should be set.
What I'd watch out for though is when they do an IMEI sweep, if AT&T can read it as a Nexus 5 (or a generic smartphone) they will provision your account as such and you'll be put on a 3G data plan (which is the default for a smartphone they don't carry). This will cause you to have to get a new SIM and have customer service provision your account as an S4 again.
Full disclosure, I'm a former AT&T store manager (left a little over a year ago) and I've seen this sorta thing happen before. If you're on go phone, unfortunately you don't have as much leeway as a post paid customer when it comes to both customer service in store or over the phone. Personally, I'd tell them you had an LG G2 (D800) as the model number will be pretty similar, so that can help you get swapped back easier should they screw up your account.

[Q] Straight Talk T Mobile LTE

I have Straight Talk with a T Mobile SIM in my Nexus 5 and I am getting awesome LTE coverage, although my friend has the exact same setup and is only getting H data and not LTE. We are both using the same APN settings, and the only difference that I can think of is that I bought my SIM card more recently. I didn't think that the T Mobile SIMs on Straight Talk supported LTE, but I am definitely getting it and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same. If you are getting LTE, what are your APN settings?

I thought ATT was the only one you could get LTE through on Straight talk, Tmobile is the 4G speeds but HSPA+.

That's what I thought, but I am definitely on Straight Talk with a T Mobile sim and am getting LTE data. Not just in my area either, since I recently took a trip and had LTE coverage in many major cities.
I can confirm that the new ST T-Mobile SIM cards support LTE. Received my new SIM one week ago and have been enjoying LTE speeds for the past week. Interestingly, the color of the SIM card was hot pink as opposed to the light pink T-Mobile SIM I used to have.

Thanks for this. I tried to contact useless Straight Talk support regarding this question. They didn't seem to understand it, sent me the at&t APN settings, when I called them on it, they sent me the non-smartphone APN settings. They said that yes, t-mobile does support LTE, not just H+ (but I didn't actually trust them to understand the question), however said nothing about needing a new sim card. I have the light pink sim right now.
However I'm still not entirely convinced. Here's a picture on ebay of what I assume is the new hot pink sim:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Straight-Talk-Micro-SIM-Card-T-Mobile-Network-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/b7gAAOxy3zNSlQHw/$_57.JPG
You can see clearly on the card that it admits "4g" is HSPA+, not LTE. I'm also suspicious because T-Mobile has a different APN setting for LTE, while Straight Talk does not. Has anyone checked the "Mobile Network Type" in settings to verify that you really truly are getting LTE? Could the hot pink be because it's in micro sim size? The at&t cards have a similar color scheme (light blue for full sized sim, dark blue for micro), and I think offering the Micro Sim size for t-mobile is new, but the internals of the sim may not be.
Can someone post a speedtest speeds result of their "LTE" speeds? My H+ speeds are very fast, so I don't know if there'll be much difference..

Just curious if anyone here has been cutoff by straight talk. I read the small print, and you are only unlimited on their web space. So technically they can cut you off if you use too much data.

Its unlimited 2.5gb LTE. Then they throttle you down.. Maybe if you blew threw all your 2.5gb in five minutes by downloading a torrented movie they'd shut you off. All your data in less then a day.

Verizon S3 on Straight Talk

Just received my SIM card from straight talk for the i535 all I did was go to straight talk web site activate the phone using the phone imei number then start phone with SIM card installed> Once SIM card was activated I restarted the phone and had LTE with no need to setup APN settings.
I just shut off the verizon service right before setting up the phone on ST so I do not know if thats has effected anything but hopefully it doesn't.
Also I had to contact Straight Talk using their facebook page to get the SIM card and it was shipped for free.

I was. However I hooked my Old S3 up for a family member. I can confirm that the VZW S3 will get 4G LTE on the Verizon network with the CDMA Sim that comes with the starter pack. Ran a speed test at full signal strength and had an initial burst for ~9-10 mbs and stabilized at ~5mb both up and down. This is way more than the user of the phone will need but also not a bad number.
For comparison sake my personal phone on a VZW unlimited plan still gets 40+ mbs during speed tests in the same location. Appears that ST is speed limited but at 5mbs still more than 99.9% of users will ever need/notice at one time.

Huge update. This phone is now working 99% on Metro. Even still being associated on my mom's Verizon account. It is using my metro service, on a tmobile apn. Full lte, working mms, voice, text, data, everything. So happy to have resolved this.
Future reference, it won't work if you add your imei via the metro website, you would have to call metro or in my case use the online chat support.
The only thing not working is the hotspot built in. I have yet to test if a third party hotspot app will work or not.

Why not hop on Page Plus Cellular while your Verizon Note Edge esn is still clear. Maybe they'll let her/you pay off the phone or it's already out of contract and you won't have to worry about a blacklisted esn, or if all else do a basic bare minimum plan with it on Verizon keeping the esn in good standings.
But I believe their sim's are usually international use only and metroPCS isn't CDMA anymore, so you'd get spotty coverage as it'd only be dependent upon the sim cards coverage which my not meet the specifications for metro's coverage, but with Page Plus Cellular you'd get the coverage that works for your phone model and carrier and you'd also get LTE with it.
I've never heard of page plus here in Tampa bay area. Metro is huge here, and $60 for unlimited LTE ain't a bad deal lol. I need the unlimited LTE also.

I didn't see your post before mine, that's cool though it's all working good, yea I was using PPC before I switched back over to metroPCS: They're a Verizon MVNO https://www.pagepluscellular.com/plans/ another good company of Page Plus Cellular reseller is http://kittywireless.com they're always doing special promotions and extra plans.
Not sure exactly how that would work with the phone still being under contract. If ya have walgreens drug stores there look at the wireless cards section you'll probably see a Page Plus Cellular card.
