Downgrading to 4.0.4 ICS - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Well, I am downgrading to 4.0.4 but I got a couple of questions...
[Q #1] Should I do factory reset before or after downgrading?
[Q #2] Which method is more convenient?
[Q #3] Is it safe to downgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.0.4?
[Q #4] I am rooted. Will it make a conflict after the downgrade? Should I uninstall it?
Thank you for your help. I know I am still a noob but lately I am not comfortable with the OS 4.1.2 and want to have the old version back...

Come on mates! Don't be jerks with him! He is a noob, of course. And your job here is not only develop ROMs and stuff. As part of this great community, you must explain <<Doesn't matter the times you've explained it.>> the newest people how to solve even the most simple problems. You can't expect to teach people with a lot of guides and stuff... They will obviously get confused! It's a simple requirement and doesn't harm anyone! Now, my noob mate, make sure to clean all Data and both Cache and Dalvik (that's the name I think.) before downgrading. I am quite sure that's the problem.

This is the problem with XDA these days. XDA is not intended to be a site for people that aren't able to/don't want to teach themselves. This site was founded on the notion that people can and should teach themselves the skills to extricate themselves from the stranglehold of the manufacturers and OS providers. This is a development community full of self-taught gurus who are kind enough to share their work and knowledge with everyone else, with the hope that they carry on the learning tradition. People can't expect to have their hands held when there are perfectly acceptable guides and tutorials for practically every scenario. And note that it is no one's JOB to develop ROMs or offer troubleshooting-people are here because they love the community and development.

Can you please tell me why you continue to post telling people to use ROM manager? I know that you have used it, but there is no official release of CWM (FOR SGS4G models) inside of ROM Manager yet. Additionally, Edify is the current standard for CWM 3.x.x not Amend so why are you pointing people to use zip's not following edify scripting.
Furthermore, do you really have any proof that KC1 (AN UNRELEASED BUILD from Samsung) is MORE stable than the KD1 WHICH WAS released?
Again for people who just take your word and then mess up their phone it's not helpful.

There's no reason to be enthusiastic over a bad solution such as the one proposed in the OP.
My point for commenting wasn't to not be enthusiastic, the point is THIS PROCEDURE may work for the author, but it's not the recommended nor the proper way to use CWM. It's not the CWM designed for this device.
So pardon me to rain on the parade, preventing users from doing something to mess up their device.

I definitely need the correct, easiest and simplest method. Not because I'm lazy. I'm just a brand new noob and if I screw up my phone I'm in real trouble.
I barely know the basics but I'm itching to mod my phone. I'm missing all the fun! Lol.
All this dialog concerning our current developments and different methods may be annoying to some of the more knowledgable but to a noob like me it is very informative.

My first post was also towards the OP. I'm tired of seeing the blind lead the blind. It only leads to "I bricked my phone, HELP!" threads. I guess I was a little tired last night and didn't articulate my thought properly. I am only on this forum because I own the device and I try to help the actual devs (all 3 of them for this device) and also have current information on progress for this device. I'm not here to be led by the blind. Not saying that you are one of the ones who is blind because I really don't know you. either way I am not at all enthusiastic over this so called solution at all... I used odin to update my device the proper way as I have been using odin well over a year now. Which it seems to some makes ME a "rook" lol Ignorance is bliss... must be a Obama supporter too I bet.

Replacing 3E Recovery with Stock Infuse Android 2.3.6?

Long time user of XDA, first time poster! This website has been a constant help and friend through all of the Flashing, Modding and Fixing I've done through my many Smart-phones (All the way back to the HTC StarTrek flip phone).
I have a question about the removal of 3e Recovery on the Samsung Infuse.
-I recently bought it broken and have since repaired the LCD. First thing I
wanted to do was load it up with some Cyanogenmod or the equivalent, and
that's when I Discovered a potentially NEW problem regarding the replacement
of the Recovery file.
-As it is a general rule, to check other threads before making a new one, I have
spent the last week scouring the Infuse page to try and find an answer to my
specific issue, and since none of the fixes posted work, I was wondering if y'all
could help.
-First of all, the Recovery file is not under the System/Bin folder like many of the
walk through videos and Threads mention, it is instead in the root of the phone.
-Secondly, When using Root Explorer to mount the root folder as R/W, I was able
to replace the "Recovery" file with the modified variation. However, whenever I
restart the phone, go into recovery via the 3 button hold, It still gives me the
unsigned error. I exit the Recovery and let it boot up normally, only to find that
the "Recovery" file has been replaced with the original.
-I figured maybe there was a backup on the phone that is auto-subbed in for the
modified file. I do a search for "recovery" via root explorer and find a few more
"Recovery" files. No matter which one I replace, upon reboot, they have been
swapped out for the original "recovery".
I am at a loss... Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have tried the Odin Methods to a T as well as the Heimdall method for recovery.
Thanks in Advance!
Corey Krattli
P.s. I know Im not the only one with this issue, as Ive seen it posted, but never
responded to. I think it may be a new issue with the 2.3.6

Not structured well? He clearly stated that he tried to find information to help himself, but was unable to. He explained his problem clearly and with good grammar. Hell, he even signed the bottom with his name. I understand people flaming the "omg how do I flash recovery lol I tried it bricked wat do" posts, but the only thing wrong with this is the wrong section, which isn't that big of a deal. People make mistakes.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
on one hand I don't know why we can't have development discussion in the development section. I thought we were here to share information on developing not just to showcase what we did... anyway that has been my problem with xda for a while. few poeple make tutorials on the original work and you can't ask questions about it if they dont. seems all the cooperation on xda happens outside of xda and the moderators enforce that so the "dev" section is really the rom download section..
but enough complaining, this wasn't a dev question in the first place. moving a file is hardly developing something. but that doesn't mean ya cant answer it as you tell the person to ask a mod to move it..
Samsung seems to have cought on to the 3e trick and changed something. at this point if the phone is preloaded with 2.3.6 you have to either downgrade through Odin or stop trying to do things the hard way and just flash a non secure kernel, you apparently already have root so just download sgs kernel flasher and use entropys DD kernel.
2.3.5 seems to be rootable throught the zerg rush exploit, 2.3.6 is very secure on the infuse. on future devices we may even have to wait for Sam firmware or other with access to samsungs fus server to provide a leak to get a kernel to dump the initramfs so non secure kernels can be compiled and flashed through Odin. that's just how it is.
I did in fact use the super thread. I tried every single thread listed and each one either soft bricked my phone or left me with a black screen when trying to enter recovery mode via the 3 button method. I then thought it might be an issue with the recovery file. This is when I discovered an issue where with 2.3.6 the recovery being replaced with the factory default file. At the very least, if there is no fix thus far, there should be a disclaimer that it doesnt work with 2.3.6. I apologize fot anyone who may have been pissed off, but I believe this IS a Development issue.
Thanks,
Corey Krattli

Doing the SGS kernel flasher and using Entropys Kernel did the Trick! I'm amazed as to why this isn't a thread in the SUPER THREAD in the Development section.

Its not a thread yet because its a new problem. You got help, don't complain. Next time, post in q&a, and look there for similar threads first. I can see about 5 regarding your same problem with the new 2.3.6 not being able to get recovery the usual way. It's amazing how much a little reading can do.

*If you find this Help Thread helpful, feel free to hit the "thanks" button below!
So again, this has been done before in other threads, but I feel compelled to include it in our Atrix 2 forum. Granted, we now have a "Q&A" (Questions & Answers) sub-forum, there still seems to be an upsurge of questions being asked and new threads being posted that have already been addressed, discussed, and posted. To avoid the flaming and trolling of New Members here, I'm opening up a thread for questions that New Members may be too hesitant to ask in sub-forums, or ones that are "dev-related" whereas you may not have hit your '10 post' mark yet in order to post in development sub-forums, or any other questions you feel need answers, to avoid cluttering up the rest of the forum sections. Trust me, you will get a much more acceptable reception from posting your 'dumb' or "noobish" questions here, sparing yourself from flaming or otherwise from creating a new thread with a question or concern that has already been dealt with.
So for the sake of everyone's time here, I have to assume that you (yeah, you!) have already registered and read the forum rules, as well as watched that lovely "You're A n00b On XDA" video, so I don't feel compelled to do the entire rundown of the full length version of rules. Please keep these in mind when within the forum, and exercise your own abilities before enlisting the help of others here. Granted, we are here to help you, but if it is apparent that you have not helped yourself, we will let you know in a way that *hopefully would eliminate the need to call you out on your lack of reading, searching, reading, and searching some more. Now that we have that out of the way, let's begin:
***Rules To Abide By:***
When visiting this thread to help the less fortunate, or rather, less knowledgeable, please observe The Rules Of XDA, so that we all (Seniors, Members, Developers, etc.) can provide the most helpful insight, guidance, and direction to those new to xda, as the are "New Members", rather than "NØØBS". I will outline several other threads that can be found throughout xda later, but for now, we'll focus on some basics.
No calling anyone a "n00b".
No making fun of someone's genuine question.
No swearing -even using *'s or other symbols is still swearing, so don't do it!
No posting useless comments/off topic comments.
No posts saying "Thanks" (It makes others feel as though their "help" is valued by clicking the 'button', rather than a 'typed' "thank you")
I will do my best to address your concerns, questions, or otherwise. Same goes for the other members here you frequently help me to help you. If I cannot seem to find an answer, I will try and point you in the right direction. Please, be patient for a reply, and courteous to those who attempt to bring resolve to your issues. We're all doing this in our free time, and as a service to you. Remember to thank those who do, in fact, help you by clicking their "thanks" button, not just a 'typed' reply saying thanks.

I will be keeping this thread opened to revision, assuming the ideas and suggestions are beneficial to those who are "New Members" here on the Atrix 2 forum. Please, I implore you, if you post here any replies to questions asked, be a courteous and patient with the New Members as you'd like them to be with you, if the roles were reversed. This is a continued attempt to try and alleviate the work load throughout the forums related to the Atrix 2 to answer or address questions, concerns, or otherwise. You only need to separate the webtop files if you don't want to flash the webtop, otherwise run the .bat file while you are in AP Fastboot. Make sure you have the Motorola drivers installed on your computer. You should be fine after that...

I'd recommend you root while on 2.3.6 and flash the custom recovery (CWM) Clockworkmod Recovery, so as to familiarize yourself with things. CWM has the option in its menu to 'backup' and it's a good tool for that purpose. Backing up does not wipe or delete any data, only "backs up", hence the name. Wiping user data/factory reset will wipe all of your data: contacts, apps, pictures and other media, etc. I do NOT recommend using Titanium Backup for anything -it seems to cause way more problems for our phone than it does good.

Can you uninstall it via: settings>manage apps>superuser>uninstall? You should just be able to re-root without any problems. The superuser app is just the application that allows permissions granted/denied for apps which require root privileges...

The one nice thing I have found about using a backup application (ie, TB) is that it also backs up your user data as well. So home screen settings, texts, basic settings, EVERYTHING. You can literally install a fresh ROM and be back EXACTLY where you were before.
Word of caution though, obviously if you have data backed up for a GB ROM, do not restore data on an ICS ROM. Mixing that type of thing is bad news.

Hey guys, I'm new to the Boot Menu Manager, how do I use scv7 leak 2 as my second system?
I've searched how to use the second system, but with all the posts, I couldnt find an exact answer.
I know it has to be extracted in the clockworkmod/backup folder of the sd card, but will that interfere with the backup of my first system? (which is ICS Leak #1)
Again I've never tried this, so I apologize for this, but hey better safe than sorry right? If anyone would be willing to pm me with help that'd be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

If i'm reading the thread right, it looks as though you can only flash a nandroid backup to the second system. And since scv7 is a zip install, this is not possible with bootmenu. Since it's a zip, think of it as a HUGE patch for your current stock rom. Nandroid backups are completely different.
So you're pretty much outta luck on what you want to do bud.
Why not just flash scv7 and run it as your normal ROM?

*If anyone in this thread helps you, please click their "thanks" button below!
Okay, so by my count we have at least fourteen (14!) threads about 'Did I brick my phone' or the like in our Q&A Section within the last few days, probably more in actuality. That's just ridiculous. Why we need a new thread every time someone thinks they have bricked their phone is just pointless, clutters up the forum, and isn't in line with the rules of this site. This is a prime example of members (mostly new ones) thinking it's proper protocol to start a new thread, regardless of having over a dozen others on the same topic. So, I'm opening this thread for some clarification on this, and for questions to be asked here if you have done something to your phone resulting in any kind of booting problem. If you feel like you have possibly bricked your phone (either hard bricked or soft bricked), it would be beneficial to start here for some definitive answers to your particular situation. Though we here on xda are willing to help others with their dilemmas, this site isn't necessarily for tech support to those who try to do something they have no clue as to what they're doing. Rooting/modding/upgrading/etc your phone won't help you woo the ladies, it won't win you any awards with your peers or co-workers, nor will it make your mother proud of you. Having an interest in this type of thing is great; but there are risks involved, and the potential to brick your device can always be present if you're not careful and do not follow the instructions exactly as they are given for what you are attempting.
Now then, allow me to give a run down of what is a soft bricked device:
If you're phone will not boot passed the Motorola splash screen = soft brick
If you your phone will only boot into AP Fastboot, and nothing else (AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) (Flash Failure) 0A.68) = soft brick
If you can only manually boot into AP Fastboot (holding volume ↑ + ↓ + power buttons at the same time) = soft brick
Attempt to FXZ back to GB and get an error (step "_____" failed) and will not boot into Android, but only AP Fastboot = soft brick
If your phone will boot, but only as far as the Motorola splash screen, reboot, and continue = bootloop (super soft brick)
Okay, now on to what a hard bricked device is:
If your phone will not boot at all, no power, nothing but a white LED = hard brick
If your phone has none of the above = super hard brick
If your phone will not boot at all, and the battery gets very hot = hard brick
JTAG or RIFF boxes will not recognize the device if any of the above has been experienced -- please note this!
Now, if you have any of the above, please reply in this thread and we will try to see if we can pull you out of your "brickdom" -- assuming you are only soft bricked. If you are showing any of the above signs of being hard bricked, well, you're our of luck. You will need to try to contact Motorola for a warranty exchange (assuming your device is within the one [1] year warranty) or contact AT&T's 1-800 number (assuming this is your provider). Again, this thread is in hopes that we can keep all the "Plz Halp I Brickz My Fon" threads from popping up all over. You've either hard bricked your device or it's soft bricked/bootlooping, in the case of the latter we can help. If I've overlooked any of the above mentioned lists of "brick possibilities", please let me know and I will update the OP.

I think this is sticky material.
I agree with Jim. This should definitely be stickied. Hopefully everyone will read this before posting the same questions repeatedly.

Good point, though I was thinking of keeping this one "brick only" and drawing up another for all the problems people are having updating to ICS. That to me seems like a whole other animal. But, this was something I just thought was somewhat overdue, and posted in an attempt to funnel all the bricked users here, rather than muddying up the forum. Thanks for the suggestion, I will put some thought into this. Oh, and I do have your PMs -- I've read them and will be getting back to you. My apologies for the delay thus far. I'll be on to address those things you brought up soon... :good:
Edit: We'll see how this all goes, and see who posts what. Perhaps it could encompass that problem as well. If it keeps the forum free of extraneous threads, I'd consider this successful!

Great work as always mate.
Some guys suggested stickying this. I understand the intent but unfortunately, stickying a thread seems to be the best way to ensure that the thread will not even be seen, let alone read. Regular and periodic bumping seems to work best.
PS: Apex, appreciate the work. See if you can add typical / common soft brick situations and the panacea, so that lot of people don't even have to post but may simply refer to this thread.

My friend has the Indian A2 on stock gb and stock recovery - no bootstrap, etc. The phone was rooted and had busybox installed. My friend wanted to unroot and so tried to remove busybox using some busybox installation app from the market.
Now on rebooting, the phone doesn't get past the Motorola logo. The poor fellow is almost in tears
Hope the phone is not a paperweight. How can I set it right? Thanks in advance for the help.

Busybox is just a root privileged application, and can be uninstalled like any other: Settings>Apps>Mangage Apps> BusyBox Installer: Uninstall
I suppose un-rooting would depend on which rooting method you used. If it was the .bat file root method, you should have a 'click to unroot' .bat file that can be run to removed root...

No, never ever ever uninstall busybox!!!! All you will remove by doing this is just remove the installer.apk. inside the apk you can actually uninstall busybox, but you will soft brick.

You are not bricked. I wish people would stop saying they are bricked/possibly bricked just because they did some things they weren't supposed to, and can't boot.
If the screen comes on, its not bricked.
And probably pretty simple to get up and running again. You just don't know what those steps are. Nothing wrong with that if you are a n00b to this device. But don't hit the panic button and immediately assume you are bricked.
In adb, does the device show up if you type"
adb devices
If not, you probably just need to re-install the HTC drivers, and/or try a different USB port. The drivers are a bit finicky, so not being able to connect is a common issue.
Fix the USB connection issue, and format the SD as suggested in the above response, and you will probably be good to go.

Rofl. Don't think this community will ever forget that story.
If it's red, rectangular, and made of clay, it may be a brick.

Wow, you're ignorant. it wasn't you who helped me, redpoint, you gave no information I hadn't already tried. The post above yours is still the only relevant one. And I thanked that user. Yesterday.

People on the internet amuse me.
Calling people ignorant when they're the ones you're asking for help. :/

So you're all pissed off and insulting me, because I didn't see you thanked somebody else? "Wow" indeed.
You apparently didn't bother to notice I gave the same solution as the one above mine, while also offering up other things to try (as the one fix doesn't always solve the problem). And how are we supposed to know what you tried, if you don't tell us (a poor way to try to get help)? Sorry for not reading your mind.
So you don't think my posts deserves a "Thanks", well that's fine. But you have no justification to come on here and be an a$$ to someone that took the time and effort to try to help you, even if it wasn't the solution that worked for you.
Seems like you are just all butthurt, and want to lash back at people for just having a little fun and making a few jokes. The jokes were posted because you made the unfounded conclusion that you were bricked (when you weren't even close to a brick), and also since you didn't properly research and asked a question that has been answered literally 3 times a day.

Read through a bit more. I agree a search would solved his issue, but at least answer him, so when others search they find a thread that helps, not a rant fest. Let's all be adults.

Its almost impossible to brick hoxl unless you flash an old Rom meant for tegra hox. A bricked phone you will know as it appears dead as in paper wieght . Asking is ok but a simple Google search and you have answer . Problem is some people now are rooting phones cause they think its a cool fad but no nothing about it and don't follow instructions then come here and cry and feel they are entitled to get all the attention for there issue when usually its already been discussed, thus they post same questions in multiple threads demanding answers....every1 needs assistance at all levels at some point but come on , if you have never heard of adb and fastboot then maybe some people need to prepare for at least hr of research, is that to much to ask?
Edit: srry didn't mean to rant but this is like the 4 new thread asking same stuff and just disregarding people's posts who are trying to help as false solutions

I think you need to take a step back and take a look at all redpoint has done for this community. If you read the post he did try to help you and many others if you read his stickies.
