Is it possible to root?... - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to root without wiping, and without blocking future OTAs?
All I want to do is use an ad-blocker like AdFree, so if possible, I'd like to root, run AdFree, and unroot, so I can still get OTA updates.

You don't have to unroot to receive OTA updates.

The only wipe required is to unlock the bootloader. Rooting itself doesn't wipe anything.

As Petrovski80 said, unlocking the bootloader and so the device getting wiped is innevitable. If you install superSU set it into survival mode in the SU settings so root will stick after you installed the OTA.

That would be great.
All I want is to block ads one-time. If I can do it without wiping, that would be great. If not, I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Don`t get your hopes up bro, not posssible for the intial root. There is an app to lock and relock the bootloader once you are rooted without wiping the phone, link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731993.
BTW: you can backup your user apps and data with Helium, link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=nl.

This was the app I was thinking of but I missed the bit about an initial bootloader unlock.
I have never found an app that would backup and restore the exact state of the phone beside a nandroid but that requires an unlocked bootloader.

That's the one I was using. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it definitely DOES need root, no?

Like I said, there used to be a non-root option in the app to symlink to /data. I've not used it in a while because adaway is just better. But the option definitely used to be there

This. As Titanium backup requires root, just backup your apps/whatever and you are set. You can also set Google to backup contacts, Wifi passwords and such to your Google account. As usual, don't backup system data, its not necessary. That's nandroid's job
Unlocking though is a bit of a funny process with the N5, mostly due to Google not giving us drivers. Therefore don't be too hasty and read up first. Rooting though most recoveries will do as well as SuperSU.

No, all ad-blockers need root. I guess you`re new to this but to sum it all up: for ad-blocking you need root and to get rooted you need to unlock the BL which will wipe the device but you may or may not backup your apps and data with Helium. That`s realy it bro

[Q] Verizon m8 java card s-off and root question

I just purchased a Java card s-off from the HTC modzone, and I'm wondering if the weaksauce root that is out will work as a permanent root once my phone is s-off? Or will I have a s-off device and have to wait for a new permanent root method?
Thanks

I guess this should be moved to Q&A

If you do it from recovery, yes.
Once you are s-off, you don't need weaksauce anymore.
Just flash su through a custom recovery like you would normally do when rooting an android device.

My question is, how much support for custom ROM's and kernel's are going to be around with such a limited number of people being able to do this?
support thread is live

i cant speak for sonic, but in the past he has been willing to do a couple dev phones for free. i wouldnt worry too much about support... either a software exploit will be found,or more folks will get tired of waiting and use his service. either way, there will eventually be support.
i have used his service as well. there is no disasembly of your shiny new phone, and he is trustworthy individual. as long as you also pay for enuff insurance youve nothing to lose but a few days away from your new baby

Fair enough, you could try it and if it works install titanium backup and backup your apps. Then it would be slightly less hassle to unlock the bootloader. I'm not so sure of the outcome if it doesn't work properly or go wrong, but worse case scenario you may need to wipe to sort your phone out anyway.
I know man, I know
I was simply hoping to find anyone who had already used to get some feedback: I really have no time to restart from zero on the phone, in case anything goes wrong with titanium, helium or anything else.
In addition, my phone works like a charm, have no issues at all: I'd rather not touch it

What about using fastboot to root? You dont need to unlock and wipe, see the below posts and thread for info. Safer than using an 'exploit'.

King doesn't work. The only way to root is by unlocking the bootloader. It's best to research a phone when you're buying it, then you'd just unlock the bootloader before committing data to the device.

Can rooting can cause entering of malware into your mobile (with root permission!!)? Are malwares are more powerful in a rooted mobile? Can it be avoided?

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Yes, rooting your device makes it less secure. It allows apps to access a lower level of your system than the manufacturer intended. But you usually have to allow root access to apps so if an app is requesting root and you don't know what it is, don't allow it.

Old discussions... Just realize there is a very small amount of people needing root. Also on this point you have to discuss the question of security - rooting.
Good morning guys. The vulnerability is still out there.. could be possible to achieve temp root to backup TA partition?

which ROM for as close to stock android as possible for SM-G930F

I see a lot of custom ROMs on https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/development but I am not sure which to use. My main goal is to remove all the builtin Samsung apps that I cannot disable/uninstall like Calendar and Internet. I started looking at SuperMan but then saw it has a lot of other enhancements too. I also want to avoid my device being rooted because I have to install apps that won't install if my phone is rooted (GFE/BlackBerry Work).
LineageOS or Resurrection Remix.
Just disable the Samsung apps you don't want. That's the only remedy for you.
SuperMan is probably the closest you'll get to stock. If that's too far off, I'm not really sure of any other options. You could temporarily root and try removing the offending apps, I'm not sure how much the system depends on them.
There's also the option of Magisk (Systemless) root, which shouldn't effect root-adverse apps.
I have rooted stock G930F rom with Magisk and removed close to a 100 system apps. No bugs, no crashes, and it is the best rom there is, if you tweak it right. Btw, you can hide root with Magisk and install your apps.

Please take my advice:
Do NOT root your device.
Cause that has some side effects and nearly no benefits:
You won't be able to encrypt your phone again.
You'll have to install magisk to get some things to work
Do NOT install an AOKP based ROM cause there are severe bluetooth bugs.
Just install "BK Package Disabler (Samsung)" on stockrom and get rid of Samsungs bloatware.
PS:
I'm back to stockrom after installing LOS and I regret that step, cause it tripped the knox-bit.
Perhaps the BT bugs will be fixed in future; then I'll give LOS another shot.
Lol @ this lad above, get your facts straight.
On-topic: I followed root instructions from galaxys7root. For the debloating part, there is a topic called "Debloat your S7" or something like that, which helped me uninstall most of the apps, and the other ones I just uninstalled cause I didn't need them.

Rooting went flawlessly.
I took the TWRP / Magisk way.
OK, loosing all the data is quite normal, when formating data, to get rid of the encryption.
But it trips your knox-fuse with the following consequences:
S-Health does not work anymore. OK, there is a build.prop hack to get it working.
OTA updates will not work anymore.
S-Pay (and others) is said to not work anymore.
Encryption does not work or is risky (look at Chainfires post):
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72204306&postcount=978
No one knows, how long safetynet will be covered by Magisk. Btw.: Magisk is great!
If I am wrong at any point, pls correct me.
I only rooted to use LOS. But there are too many errors atm.
So I returned to stock and have to live with these issues.
So it depends on your usecase.
If you just want to debloat your stockrom, use BK- disabler.
