Why bother? The OPO has an easily unlockable bootloader, so you can root, install a custom recovery and ROMs if you so desire.

Fair enough, you could try it and if it works install titanium backup and backup your apps. Then it would be slightly less hassle to unlock the bootloader. I'm not so sure of the outcome if it doesn't work properly or go wrong, but worse case scenario you may need to wipe to sort your phone out anyway.
I know man, I know
I was simply hoping to find anyone who had already used to get some feedback: I really have no time to restart from zero on the phone, in case anything goes wrong with titanium, helium or anything else.
In addition, my phone works like a charm, have no issues at all: I'd rather not touch it

What about using fastboot to root? You dont need to unlock and wipe, see the below posts and thread for info. Safer than using an 'exploit'.

King doesn't work. The only way to root is by unlocking the bootloader. It's best to research a phone when you're buying it, then you'd just unlock the bootloader before committing data to the device.

Hi,
the question is already in the header.
Is it possible to Root/Unlock Bootloader without wipe?
I only found a Nexus 4 thread for that. I costumized my phone already... i dont want to reinstall everything
To unlock bootloader without data wipe you would need to have root. To have root without an unlocked bootloader on Nexus devices, there would need to be an exploit found in Android 4.4. As far as I know, this does not exist. So, to answer your question: it is possible if an exploit for root exists

On another note:
This is why, on a Nexus device, you unlock the bootloader right after checking USB port is working fine. You can always lock it back if you take good care of your USB port/cable.

why still no exploit for kitkat ? :crying:

You can backup/restore almost everything needed via apps or adb, even without root. Apps, texts, call logs, bookmarks, etc.The amount of time wasted finding an exploit that isn't available and you could be done wiping, rooting, logging back into your accounts, and enjoying the benefits of root.
If you're that lazy why are looking for an exploit yourself. That didn't sound lazy to me

I'm in the OP's situation -- set up the phone, convinced myself I wouldn't need root this time, but having second thoughts. My main concern is that adb backup -> wipe -> adb restore will "miss" something, and I won't be able to get it back. There's no one specific thing I'm worried about, just a sort of nagging concern.
I'm thinking of waiting until my previous phone is fixed (busted USB port...) then doing my test-restore there. That should work, right?

Yeah.
There's also helium. Cant hurt to take multiple backups.
Well Helium is just a pretty front-end for ADB right? I figure if adb "misses" something it's likely Helium would too.
And I just had another concern occur to me -- if my older device (SGS2 running CM 10.1) can't use the ART runtime, will that mean I can't restore my (ART-using) N5 backup? I want to install apps + data with a single command, if possible, but if the apps are backed up as ART-compiled, does that mean the code that's intended for Dalvik has been removed? Might be a better question for the runtime thread.
Wait? What? Are you trying to restore sgs2 into a nexus 5?

Hi all.
How can I wipe my Nexus 5 so it is a plain Kit Kat 4.4.2 (like the day I received it) and just root it? it's currently in 4.4.2 and rooted, but with a lot of stuf in it too. My main concern is how to wipe once it's rooted, and how to reroot.
For those who like to read, a little more info:
I have a Nexus 5 which received 2 days ago. I come from an iPhone 5S, so... pretty newbie...
I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device after unboxing, and have been using it since. Problems are:
1. I just found out about CWM and its capabilities, and I intend to use the backups a lot.
2. I kind of ****ed up with a couple of apps I regret installing.
3. After a backup I just did today, it asked to whether or not fix the recovery (or something like that). Selected YES, nothing happened. It then asked to fix the root... said YES and screwed it completely. I had to put SuperSu in the phone as a ZIP and manually install it again to recover my root access. It kind of looks "dirty" now, lol.
Anyways, I'd like to make a whole device backup from CWM with Kit Kat out of the box, no extra apps installed. Just rooted. Then install all my stuff, sync contacts and so on, and make another backup.
That's why I want to erase the device and have it all clean (just rooted).
Thanks!

Oh please, I know. I was just hiding my ignorance under the iOS carpet.
Will give a read to both links tomorrow. Will definitely do link1 on friday if I find the time, and will then consider either doing link2 or going the CF-Auto-Root way.
I'll let you know how this all ends.
Again, thanks!
Update:
Followed steps in link1. Everything went fine.
Gave a deep read to link2. Found it understandable and easy to do and follow, but decided to go the CF-Auto-Root way just because I had done it before and worked nicely...
Everything OK. Something weird happened -again- though. After the clean restore and root, I installed CWM and proceeded to make a backup of the plain system. After it, it asked to fix root again. I had previously said YES, which lead to a broken root, so I said NO this time. Same thing happened!! I lost root and had to manually install SuperSu 1.93 from ZIP in CWM... Why does this happen?
Anyways, I have another question. If one day I decide to restore from this backup I just made, will it be exactly as doing a complete restore following link1?
Thanks!

Oh damn it... Really? OK, a couple of quick questions:
1. Did reinstalling SuperSu leave junk in the file system?
2. Will flashing TWRP leave anything either?
My OCD would probably make me restore again if the answer to any of those questions is yes.

This is odd. I was previously Unlocked, and Rooted, with SuperSU 2.37. After OTA update to 05Q, my Root is gone. No SuperSU app in my installed program list.
Okay, so I go look for the latest, find that it's now at 2.46, download, reboot, flash (no errors), reboot, and i'm back into my phone. Don't use a toolkit, they're bad news. They cause more problems than they're worth, plus they allow you to do things to your device without actually knowing what's going on, which is bypassing some very crucial learning and knowledge.

bump
I don't think this will work unless we get our Bootloader unlocked (which hasn't been done yet as far as i know)
UNLOCK BOOTLOADERS
If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device - with the exception of Nexus devices, which will usually automatically "OEM unlock" and wipe your data !
this is kind of lame.... why chainfire release a auto root if the thevice have bootloader locked down? and onlockable?
Confused myself
I want to say root is possible, there are tons of sites with instructions: https://www.google.com/search?q=SM-...i57j0j69i60.9343j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Of course, XDA doesn't seem to have a specific G930T thread for rooting with instructions, then see threads like this today. I was all set to give it a try, but unsure if should proceed...
Did find this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/help/sm-g930t-root-doesnt-void-warranty-t3415936
EDIT: so the one linked in original comment was the bleeding edge root process and seems like had a really high failure rate. Most current I've seen is: http://lifeatsamsung.com/root-t-mobile-galaxy-s7-sm-g930t-2/
Seems a little more clean cut and easy. I'll edit again if I find a newer solution or at least commentary on success/fail

This means that the only rooting method right now isn't as stable as it would be if it had a unlocked bootloader the root right now will cause some issues but they can easily be fix from some of the steps after rooting guides that are in the xda forums and yes it using a Qualcomm processor Witch is pretty much the snapdragon and there hasn't been any luck this past year of getting the bootloader unlocked for full and smooth rooting I'm really ****ty at explaining sorry if your still lost

When I started to mod z2 I was more on the workpiece with fix and modding so I never cared too much of this troubles
At least it can take pictures, only the preview is black :silly:
Due to the lack of pie support of the pay solution at the moment, you can downgrade your phone to OREO, install the solution, take a picture and upgrade your phone to PIE again.
You need newflasher v13 from XDA and the stock Oreo ROM I uploaded in the TWRP thread.
And a downgrade requires factory reset.
Because of the encryption.
Feel free to ask for help.

And use it a single time in OREO to take a picture.
And you need to backup your userdata before downgrading to Oreo.

Even with magisk hide?
You need magisk (it gives you root) to boot the phone after the twrp installation, because of Android Verified Boot 2.0

Hello
Since I unlock the bootloader and install Android 9 with EMMA I have the same problem
Have you found a solution?
Sorry I'm really new I just wanted to change ROMs and I made the mistake of unlocking the bootloader
I look on the forum it offers solutions but with the level I have I really do not succeed

Go into my TWRP thread and install TWRP and magisk.
Root your phone, backup your apps with Titanium Backup
Downgrade to the Oreo firmware I uploaded there, use xperifix as DRMfix.
Boot into Oreo, use the camera to take one shot.
Upgrade to PIE and reinstall your apps with Titanium Backup.
Titanium Backup and xperifix costs some €/$
Then wait for xperifix PIE release to get your 100% photo quality back.

I saw your thread, if it's the only solution I'll try it after. I am under Win7 and xperifix is running under win8 and 10. Thanks for responding

It should run under win 7 too
You're welcome
And a DRMfix reactivates every function back, like you never unlocked it.
