[Q] Nova Launcher Beta Battery Drain - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else been experiencing rapid battery drain with Nova Launcher Beta? When I check my battery stats, nothing seems out of place percentage-wise. Android OS is a little high sometimes, but that's it. Some days I get 5 hours screen-on over a ~20 hour period. Today, I'm down to 56% in 6 hours 5 minutes with 30 minutes of screen-on time. Yesterday, I had closer to the 5/20 I just mentioned. The only difference is I ran GEL all day yesterday, and I switched back to Nova this morning. It got me to thinking...the days I have experienced rapid battery drain, I have been using Nova Launcher. The days I have gotten great battery life, I have been using GEL. I never experienced this with Nova on past devices, so I am thinking it could be a) unique to the Nexus 5, b) unique to the Nova 2.3 beta, or a combination of both. I will continue testing to see if I can isolate any other causes, but Nova seems to be the only thing I can isolate at the moment. What do you guys think?

Download Better Battery stats app and see what's causing the most wakelocks. I'm running latest nova beta and I just got 4.5 hours screen on time with some pretty heavy usage.

nova launcher prime 2.3beta3 here, 1d5h running, 2%left 5 and a half hours screen on.

I'm running Nova launcher prime with the latest main stream release, no battery problems.

Alright, so it doesn't look like it's Nova. I might try BBS to see if I can isolate it. Thanks for the input.

Go Launcher Battery Drain?

Hi,
I'm currently on the Deck RC7 ROM, and loving the 2.3.3 gingerbread. I'm getting pretty good battery life, at around 14-15 hours of usage before charge, using Tiamat 3.3.4. I like the Go Launcher but I noticed that when I use it, I get around 8-9 hours, so I think it's causing battery drain. Thing is I can't tell from Spare Parts of from the About Battery screen.
I just wanted to ask to see if any one of you are using Go Launcher and seeing similar battery drain issues also.
Thank you.
I love the go launcher however it does kill the battery very fast.
Go launcher drains the battery on my x10 like a constant slurp of a straw and find I show the go launcher to friends for the wow phone factor then secretly switch to ADW or launcher pro to double my spare battery time. I don't use many widgets in go launcher either but maybe someone has found a solution.
I'm not having any battery problems with the go launcher. I actually have the set CPU to overclock to 1.1ghz and then 700mhz after i turn off the screen. It has saved my battery after heavy use. I'm doing a 30-day battery screenshot challenge as we speak with my buddy and I'm getting 17-18 hours average on moderate use. So far i see no battery drop in neither launcher pro, launcher 7 nor go launcher.
By moderate i mean 2000+ text messages and about 1gb of data per month

Juice Defender... search on market, thank me later! I get 16-24+ hrs from a stock battery!

Battery life is suddenly garbage

I don't know what happened, but lately my battery has been about 20% less every day I come home from work. Right now it was down to 9% after only being on for 1d3h, I'm used to getting over 2 days easy on a single charge. I don't think I installed anything recently, and this is running CROMI 3.2.2 with I think the Clemsyn 1.3-1.8GHZ kernel. Any ideas to figure out what's causing the drain?

You need to install "betterbatterystats" to find out what's the issue. Any changes in the way you sync email, messages? any app with location service turn on by default?? well, best bet is use the app and find out.
I'll check it out. I didn't change any syncing, the only change I've made is I started using GoogleNow a little more, but I don't think it would make this much of a drastic difference.
Probably a rogue app, as buhohitr said. Reboot two times, install BBS, reboot again, and sniff it out. The reboot number doesn't matter that much, but I strongly advise to reboot in between to see if that solves the problem altogether. If not, BBS has your back.
Noticed last night that installing multiple launchers with 3.3 CROMi is eating more battery.
For instance GO is running while APEX is active.
Each on average are stealing about 3.3%
I do like the switchable launcher feature in 3.3 a lot however.
Never mind. I just noticed that you run custom rom.
I had that problem before I upgraded to 10.4.4.25. The standby battery life was a total nonsense. It would drain in less than 2 days without me even touching the tablet.
Now with 10.4.4.25 I am on 8 and half days and still have 33%. Although they seem to screw up battery stats app in settings.
Well, I installed the battery app, and looks like it was draining at about 1% per hour today while it was sitting idle. Not sure if that's good or not, I had it sitting in balanced mode all day. I do know that I started reading on it when it was at 54%, after about 30 minutes I stopped reading and it was at 50%. I went to bed, went to work, and when I came home it was at about 35%. That just seems like a lot to me.
Not sure if related since your on custom rom, but randomly my battery lasted up to about a day and a half with no use. Batterystatsplus said cell standby and maps was taking all of the power. Cell standby makes no sense and gps was turned off as well. I ended up resetting tab from the recovery menu because these rogue aps made zero sense. Back to 8 days of use.

Yep, Google Maps does that. To pretty much everyone.

I had this problem but with stock 4.2. I narrowed it down to two widgets I had placed on my home screen. BBC news and Appy Geek. I don't know which was was the culprit. Removing them solved my issue completely.

Android Battery Life Sucks!

Hello, I have an s2 and the battery life sucks, I am just wondering if it is normal or because I have a nova launcher skin with 2 or 3 small widgets. The battery depletes everyday. I wake up in the morning grab it and it starts at 100%, I check my email for 1 minute... still 100% then I quit the app in the task manager, then put it to sleep with no running apps. By the end of the school day (7:30 - 2:30) the phone is completely dead... Any suggestions?

Try deleting unwanted apps, lowering you're brightness, turning of WiFi and Bluetooth when unnecessary, and regularly killing unwanted applications. If you are rooted, change your voltage.
I heard that the s2 is known for decent battery so i think you just have two many things running at once.
Click thanks if I helped you out!

some widgets eat battery very fast.

How's your signal during the day? Some of those buildings murder your bars, and a weak signal means your phone is trying harder. I've watched a battery drain on idle from this alone.

[Q] huge battery drain

Hi all, so I have my nexus 5, and today as well as some other days I go into my battery setting page, and I noticed that there is this thing that looks like chrome beta, it's eating so much of my battery, but the weird thing is that I barely used chrome today. my battery is almost dead after only 6.5 hours of use and like 2 hours of screen on time, when I normally get like 9 hours at least with 4 hours screen on time. why is this happening? does anyone know what this is?
thanks!

Same thing shows up for me too. No idea what its from. I've never installed chrome beta (but do have Chrome installed).
I noticed this behaviour today, tonly I had multiple Chrome Beta Sandboxes pop in the battery screen.
In my case it might be due to using chrome in incognito mode and testing different video players, i used mx player while in incognito and it didn't registered in the battery stats, so it might be one of the sandboxed chrome readings.
I went into the app manager and force closed chrome beta anyway.
It's hard to tell from the screenshots. Have you tried BBS and see if there are other wakelocks?

Nova Launcher battery drain?

Hi.
I'm using Nova Launcher Prime 4.3.1 on a rooted HTC M8s and I'm experiencing massive battery drain (as seen in screenshot). I use only two start screens and no widgets at all. Any sugestions?
It says "past 2 days". Have you charged your phone in the two days? If you haven't, Nova launcher has used about 5 percent of your battery (37% of 14%)
