[mod] [request] multi window / wake on voice - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

still sorta new to this rom building thing so i am not that advanced yet. i have built my own rom from android kitchen and it works! yay! but i am trying to figure out how to get a few simple (or what i think should be simple but i cant figure it out ) things to ad to my rom. i would really like to have multi window on my nexus 5 and i would also to have the wake on voice like the samsung phones but i want it to work with google now. i have seen these done on other aosp roms but i dont like all the other mods done to them. maybe there is a flashable zip out there? someone please help.

Not the correct place to ask, the N5 is a new device and there isn't even a working xposed module yet.
Should be moved to Q&A

Looking for a specific build of JVB

I'm looking for a deodexed JVB, extended menu and 5 locks screen. Without all the other theme mods.
Maybe check docs rom kitchen in i9000 forum

I have that rom.. I just don't have a way to do the 5 locks for JVB or the extended power menu...
There are topics in the I9000 section that cover what your looking for.

Cezar has a ROM, Continuum v5 (here). maybe you could download it and extract what you are looking for. Or, just use the ROM
Because most themes IMO are ugly. I personally like the stock samsung with some small modifications. No one does that. I haven't found one rom from the developers that don't screw with the theme. Not everyone likes what you like. The best I can do is download something from the romkitchen with the stock theme and get smart little remarks when I try to ask for help.
http://www.dystopia-zero.net/xxjvb-stock.zip
There you go, dude. Completely stock except for xcal's kernel, 5 lock screen mod, built in ad blocking, overscroll effect and crt off. Also has launcher2, but it seems the icons in the app drawer are fuzzy, so if that bothers you, you might want to set touchjizz as the default launcher.
It also won't flash bootloaders, so you'll need to find the new 2.3 ones somewhere else. I recommend just flashing the stock jvb from samfirmware.com with xcal's kernel, then flashing this over it with CWM.
Maybe wait it out for Perception II? DG ROMs usually have a pretty stock feel to them.
MM do you know where I can find a tut on adding the extended menu and such. I'm interested in the dev part. Just hard finding anyone willing to help you get started.

The one I linked you to has the extended power menu. Doing it yourself is a bit involved.. you have to decompile the .dex/.odex executable with baksmali.jar and edit the code (.smali files), then recompile it with smali.jar and repackage the apk. I don't know if there are any actual tutorials that go in depth on the topic; at least I haven't seen any. It's really kind of a dive-in-and-do-it thing.
If you want to try adding common features like that to a bare rom though, there are a lot of precompiled versions floating around on xda where you just have to replace the .jar file in the proper directory. Just search for the feature you want and chances are pretty high that someone already made a standalone cwm flashable zip of it. Either that or you can try pulling it out of existing roms and popping it in to your own, provided they're based off of the same build of android.
You should check out MikeyMike's rom building tut. It's one of the stickied threads at the top of the general section. It goes over the basics pretty well.
thanks man. I'm going to have to give it a shot. This zip won't work with CWM 3
My Gingerbread ROM will have a very stock theme.

Oh, wacky.. thanks for telling me, I don't normally build roms for other people and I stick to CWM 2.5.

I was thinking the same thing.
OP You should start with aosp source and fix that if you want as pure as google android as you can get.
By the way you your picture you have up there is not stock launcher it's adw launcher. And the rotary lock screen is not stock either. Sorry.

I have the stock launcher installed in this version that screenshot is old. The Google lockscreen is included but not set as default ( trying to learn how to do this). I have remove Most of the CM stuff except for somethings i need to learn ( edit settings.apk to remove The CM settings ( which will not open when clicked on). All the apps on this rom come from a aosp rom for the DroidX( except for Terminal, Rom Manager, and File Explorer (which is very useful). All traces that i can remove so far have been removed.
haha dicks, just rippin him apart and the rom hasnt even been out for a day LOL
I applaud the effort. Congrats on your first rom and look forward to see the improvement. As far as removing apps, one thing I do is find it in Titanium then see what the file is named, then you can remove it out of the app folder.
Like stated above, you should work with a pure aosp base and you won't have to worry about any of that CM7 stuff. In my opinion, I think aosp is about as smooth as it gets when it comes to UI. I'm sure people would love to have a pure aosp ROM around here since there aren't any yet that I'm aware of.
Good luck with everything and if you need any help just ask.
I'll give a shot. I love loading new roms. Thanks and good luck.
The problem is that I remove CMparts.apk and cyanogenMod settings is still in my settings menu (like a ghost menu ( it won't open). I need someway to edit setting.apk to remove this from the settings menu but im not skilled enough to do this any help would be apreciated.
Also The RenderFX widget is unable to be found (If someone has a location or what file it is in please tell me)
tell me how it is please!!!!!
OP There is a lot more to removing cm then you are thinking. Cm is not just the addition off apps but also modification of all what is android. If you want aosp start with aosp

Ok I tried it and honestly it looks just like cm7. I don't know about creating roms but it seems that this is cm7 renamed and the boot screen changed. I would seek advice on properly creating roms and start over. Good luck.

If I were to create this from a aosp rom I first need to get my hand on one. I need to get drivers (I have no Idea on how to do drivers). And what kernel would I use. also what drivers would i need and don't need (screen, mix, speaker, touchscreen, bluetooth, wifi?)
Also would you want to make this rom with me?

You might want to check with @DOAlaboratories. He was working on an AOSP ROM, but hasn't updated his thread in a while.

Building from source ie. google. You can google ginger bread aosp and it will bring up this or from Git. You are going to have to build a kernel from source as well. You take the drivers that inspire already has. Its alot of trial and error to see what works and what doesn't.
Is there anywhere that has all the information necessary to build a rom compiled into one handy area?

I have found a outdated 2.3.1 Asop rom for Desire HD (camera not working and USB mass storage not working ). Also If any one has any idea of how to copy CM7's drivers for USB and CAMERA I would love to hear from you!!!
Also How can I update this rom to 2.3.3 without having to recompile from ANDROID-SDK
I'm gonna take a crack at building from AOSP tonight. Gonna use the kernel and proprietary files from CM7. If it doesn't boot though, I don't have the patience to start looking into the kernel and framework to fix it. Wish me luck!

[Q] CyanogenMod Settings menu as apk or zip?

Hey everyone, I have done a search on this a couple times, but haven't found much luck. I've been a little more ADHD with the ROM flashing lately and one thing I've missed from CM7 is the "CyanogenMod Settings" option in the Settings menu. I know many of these settings can be changed elsewhere, but it's very convenient. Is this install-able or flash-able on other AOSP roms? No-Sense? Thanks!
I don't know how to get the apk off of my phone since I'm not at a computer but I can tell you that the name of the process is com.cyanogenmod.cmparts maybe that can help you find it.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I am pretty positive it is quite a bit more then just an apk, and involves quite a bit of framework as well.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I was able to find the cmstats apk but I think mudknot is right, it just didn't install. I think some of the settings might be CM specific anyway, so it might be more trouble than it's worth.
The settings apk will only work with CM based roms as they use different framework files for it. There is no way to make it work on non CM based rom. One of the things with CM based roms, things only work with other CM based roms and no others as they dont use any of the propritary files that normal roms run on. The main reason for alot of app compatablity issues.

Best ROM for Nexus S? And how to flash it?

Hi guys!
I'm using standard Gingerbread Android ROM and I'm getting a little tired of it so wanted to ask if someone could suggest some ROMs to try. Also, I'm not sure how to flash them on Nexus S. I heard that there are many Androids that can be rooted by clicking one button in an app, but for Nexus I found a long tutorial here on XDA and I'm a little hesitant to try it.
Any tips will be appreciated!
Thanks much
Okis
I have tried out just about all of the roms out there now for the nexus s and now I have reverted back to stock. I have found something wrong with every rom I have tried. Custom roms are just too buggy for me even ones marked as "stable". If you're willing to deal with bugs things not working phone reboots and dropped calls by all means try some custom roms. Now I'm just waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich to come out.
oxygen rom is one of the better ones out there.
oh and btw nexus s is one of the easiest phones to root follow the guides carefully and you'll be done in minutes.
This has been discussed couple of times here, do a search.
For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239365
If you don't really feel comfortable flashing a ROM, hang around in dev section where most ROM & guidelines are available and read the feedback from users on each ROM and see which one fits your needs.
And there are NO best ROM only most suitable to your needs, what is best for others doesn't necessarily fit your needs.
I'm with blowtorch, you have to try it to find out yourself...I myself did and at the end of the day I'm perfectly comfortable with stock rooted.
The longer and harder thing to root a Nexus is to installer drivers on computer. After it's fast and easy.
Oxygen is great after 2 or 3 days. I use adw launcher ex, or stock launcher.
Sms, mms, video gtalk, video skype and so on.
Everything is juste ok.
2 days of battery life with heavy use.
I try ns collab, superosr, it's great too. More cyanogen like.
I never use miui more than 5 minutes...but i read and heard that it's a good rom too.
I love Ice and Fire. Has an Ice Cream Sandwich style launcher. Lots of extras.

This x100.
Stock Rom may not be flashy but its rock solid and fully functional.
I once searched for something like this and found that there's no clear cut answer for "best" ROM. Like others said try them all (one you figure out how to flash) or do watch videos showing off each rom to get a sense of what it's like. I don't have my NS yet but I'll be trying NSCollab and SuperOSR when I get it. Odd considering I'm not a CM7 fan...
Depends on the features you are looking for. For me at least, I got the Nexus S so I could have stock AOSP. I've been sticking with Oxygen for a while now as its close to stock with some useful added features. CM wasn't for me though I may give it another shot soon.
There's a lot of tutorials on youtube that show you how to flash a ROM. I suggest you watch a few of 'em to get an idea how to do it properly.
As for the best ROM, like others have said, it all depends on your needs. I use Oxygen because it's very stable and has extra features that I find pretty useful.
I also like minimal bloatware so I downloaded ES File Explorer and removed most Google apps since I never use 'em!

I read about it already, and the question is - is there a simpler way to root Nexus S than installing all of these SDKs etc on the computer? I guess, not from what I see here.
Don't worry, I won't **** my pants)
there is one...give it to someone who knows how to do it.
You are asking for best ROM, how to flash it, finding simpler way to root it without installing SDK, etc. on computer....and that's the only way I can think of.

This guide should be simple enough to follow.
1-CLICK-ROOT (Windows)
Download link {Updated with CWM 5.0.2.3 (cyan) and su-3.0.4-efgh}
Note: Don't forget to install the corresponding x86 or x64 drivers through the PdaNet setups.

[Q] Looking for some more Info

I am still using my SK4G. Love it! and there really are some excellant roms here for it. I was wanting to use the aroma installer, can I use this with any rom? Or does the rom have to have it included already? If I can use this with any rom, do I just flash it after I flash the rom or ?????
Thanks for any help, and sorry if this has been addressed. I have been searching and combing through everything here, and chasing down files and all that fun stuff, so it can be a bit of a mess to untangle now that I have jut about everything I was wanting.
There is only one ROM with aroma options during the initial flash but I believe it still had some issues where ricandroid and I left off.
There was a thread with an aroma install for various apps and mods which I believe yo are referring to, and yes that can be used with any ROM (except for the not finished gingerbread port) it can be flashed at any time. So if you flash a ROM and like it, then flash that aroma installer and you can customize the ROM currently on device.
I hope someday to pick up where I left off and even hopefully work on a gingerbread ROM where xindixix left off.
There are still a few people on this forum who are left and are glad to answer any question, even a few willing to do some work for the sk4g so long as someone will use it...
