Nexus 5; Gingerbread - Hear me out - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has someone made a GB ROM for the Nexus 5? I bet it would be wicked fast and smooth compared to other ROMs with higher Android versions. Is there anything that holds it back from getting GB?

This is serious. I miss the old GB days. Maybe GB is a stretch. What about ICS?

are you saying that you are not satisfied with nexus 5 kitkat performance?

Kitkat is much more optimized than ICS. ICS was a mess. GB was good but it would be a waste of time and effort to get it and no one will do it probably

Yeah! I miss my apps I used on a daily basis (example: floating browser) that just doesn't work anymore on KitKat.

Kind of choppy :/ Wish I could get ICS instant picture taking with the camera so an ICS back port is definitely necessary.

Oddly, half the fun of Android is searching and finding even more cool apps to compensate for lazy dev supported go-to's. Besides, most folks are MONTHS away from KitKat, you're special!

GB? ICS? What a waste of time. Kit Kat is the best thing that has happened to android. Everything is buttery smooth, what more could you ask for? I mean really, I'm unlocked/rooted using Franco kernel under clocked to 1.5 and everything is still butter.

KitKat is so optimized now...
If somebody made a GB rom, we'd lose;
- NFC capability
- Wireless Printing capability
- OpenGL ES 3.0 support
- CRT off animation
- ChromeCast support
- Group Messaging
- Notification quick controls (on pulldown bar.)
- Google Wallet
- USB audio
- Android Beam
- Soft Buttons
- Data Usage tracker
- Chrome support
- Hardware acceleration of the UI
- WiFi Direct
- 1080p resolution recording via camcorder
- And lots more, but these are pretty much the highlights.
If anything, someone can make a Gingerbread Theme, but the effort and time to go back that far would be redundant.

That was a Gnex-specific feature. There are plenty of ICS phones with a ton of shutter lag. And no, an ICS backport is in no way necessary for this phone. ICS is KitKat minus a bunch of features and optimization. Why not just dial it all the way back to Eclair and have some really good times?

hey guyze, y dont we, hear me out, y dont we port hunnycomb yo
y dont we

In all seriousness: OP, what the heck are you smoking? KK is smooth as it is. GB would just not even look right, feel right, behave right.

[ROM]Fast MIUI w/Sound (Released) and [ROM]AOSP and Unofficial CM7 with Sound(Soon)

Alright, now straight to business - The beloved MoDaCo developer TripNRaVeR has managed to get MIUI to work with sound, and fixed almost all issues. So far the few issues that I get are:
Camera - busted
Texts - some people seem to have issues

He is also working on AOSP / Unofficial CM7 with sound, to have us up and running till the great guys from Cyanogen release the nightlies so we can enjoy some genuine CM7

I don't want to be a downer or anything but this may be over-saturating this section with information already covered elsewhere... It's not really anything in development per this thread unless you plan to update the op with flashing procedures and changelogs... even then it's not a dev thread... it's a tracking thread...

I mean, mr2324jgf is right. The AOSP ROM isn't even available yet and the OP has absolutely nothing to do with the development of it. He knows just as much as the rest of us at this point. Which is that there is a ROM in the works, which we still have to wait for. If we have to wait for a ROM we might as well continue to wait for CM7.
I agree with mr2324jgf that this thread is useless.

AOSP rom is not up yet, but MIUI rom is.
I will add changelogs for each one of them, to keep the XDA community informed on the work done by the great dev.
But if you guys dont like it - I will ask the mods to remove the thread.
If you are gonna keep up with it to post updates, changelogs, links etc. then go for it. I just think the thread is a bit premature at this point but what's done is done.
You guys are too uptight keep this thread up its useful
Umm the MIUI ROM is available now. Been using it all night and today and its stable and usable as a daily without any major problems. Cheers for TripN!

The thing that will make my ass hit the ceiling is if we manage to get the Wifi calling to work. I tried with faux kernel and installed the wifi calling patch from xboarder - but its a no-go. I was thinking that the problem is with the kernel, but I guess I was wrong.
Would be great if someone makes that badboy work with wifi calling, so I can get to use it

[Discussion]GB, How many?

How many of you guys are still using a GB ROM?
Ive played around with a few ICS ROMs but my phone and I are not ready to make the switch.
I'm running Oxygen 2.3.1 latest Franco build for GB, stock CPU settings.
Single screen launcher. I just love it and how fluid it is and how everything corectly works.
Maybe once OTA and source is out Ill consider the switch.

Still using the latest MIUI. The biggest issue stopping me from moving to ICS is the volume rocker affecting the ringer volume instead of media volume. From what I've seen it's a core ICS issue so it might not be fixed until the official ICS release.
My phone might never see GB again

I tried to go back to stock after playing with a few ICS roms but I came back to aosp's oICS rom because the experience is so much better in ICS in my opinion. The keyboard alone is worth the switch to me.
GB was a great update, though, and if you're happy with your setup I can totally understand why you would stick with it.

Agreed. The ICS experience is just so much better regardless of the lag here and there.
Noteable things over Gingerbread:
- Better Keyboard (In terms of autocorrect)
- New Speech to Text input!
- Better Email/Gmail apps
- Better Messaging App
- Better Calendar Widget
- Consistent UI through the Google Apps
- Sweet launcher (no need to look for a custom launcher ...)
- Browser uses a tiling rendering method rather than rending the whole page at once. Browsing is faster on ICS than GB ...
- And the list continues ...
GB is fast but I have to do a lot of tweaking, new keyboards, new launchers, apps etc. But on ICS, I am almost happy with everything as is.
The only thing I miss are the power widgets from CM7 ... I know the Kangs have a few of them, but not the ones I want.

Me. Will use ICS when all the functions work properly and aren't using dodgy patches. And the battery life and performance will be similar. Until then, my customized GB setup is just perfect.
I'm still running the stock Gingerbread 2.3.6 ROM on my I9020T. I have no interest in all these hack crackerjack Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs. I'm perfectly happy to wait for Google to release the official ROM.

My Opinion
- I don't like stock keyboards over swype.
- I never use speech to text as I type faster.
- I do agree on gmail I love the new gmail application.
- GoSMS ftfw
- Never use calendar's; don't care about time.
- I do like consistent UI but I hate the appearence of this one. I've had to metamorph the hell out of it.
- I still use custom launchers as they have more features. One thing I really hate about ice cream is the 'Multitasking'. I hated it in honeycomb and I hate it here.
- I prefer Miren.
Ice cream is a great update. When the lag is gone and there is more tweaking and modifying that can be done, CM9 w/ theme chooser, I'll definitely return to it.
Forget about it... switched back to GB for the week I was in Hawaii to get 4g that was it. v26 of aosp's ICS is great on my battery life and the small lag I can live with used to it on some GB roms too. Some nuisances with ICS but not enough to go back to GB... it's still alpha so I can't complain. alpha builds of any rom are buggy, but I use ICS as a daily driver... patiently waiting til OTA to fix all the current errors.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

ics is awesome, but a stock one is what i need
I have used all the ICS roms out there, they are all really great, hats off to the devs. But i am waiting for the ota for tjat polished feel of ICS.
I know the current ics roms are smooth, but not as much as i like. Coz maybe they dont have the kernel of ics rite now, so guess i ll wait for the ota
Currently on galnet miui, super smooth...

If GPS doesn't work:
first, make a nandroid backup. then, 1. boot into a sense rom or a sense nandroid (anything with working EPST).
2. run GPS to make sure it works
3. open the dialer, and type "##gpsclrx#" (without the quotes of course)
4. hit OK or Yes to clear GPS data (can't remember exactly what it says)
5. it will say that it will reboot in 10 seconds, but it won't. wait ten seconds, then manually rebood. restore your nandroid. your GPS should work.

The hal wrapper is supposed to use a camera.speedy.so in /lib/hw to link to the gingerbread libcamera.so and liboemcamera.so. I made the edits to the init.rc to allow it to work and tried renaming the camera.vision.so to camera.speedy.so with no luck.

The hal wrapper is supposed to use a camera.speedy.so in /lib/hw to link to the gingerbread libcamera.so and liboemcamera.so. I made the edits to the init.rc to allow it to work and tried renaming the camera.vision.so to camera.speedy.so with no luck.

Are things ever really that simple? Not to belittle the work you do at all!! I'm genuinely curious ...

So at this point is it all userland or is there kernel work too?

From what I understand the in kernel work is basic and points to the oem camera libs. the hal hack from the nexus used some opensource code to let it use the gingerbread libs.

I don't believe its actually roaming. When I switched to home only it still showed the R but the settings showed it was not roaming. I switch back to cyanogenmod 7.1 during the day. I don't expect people to use it for their daily rom. I do this stuff for fun and put it up for others because its a little different than evervolv plus I was hoping to get the camera parts working on the shift since the g2 has it going and the g2 based off a similar chipset msm_7k

yeah i posted that result up yesterday or the other day. i dont think its roaming either or it would say it in settings i would think. seen the same issue before while friends were working on cm6 and cm7 for the momentalikes (intercept, transform, moment) but i dont remember what it took to fix it. couga6442 or qnhoang81 on sdx might know but im clueless.

KarmaKingdom Beta
hey all i am working on my first port, a retro port - based on RUU_Kingdom_S_Sprint_WWE_2.12.651.5, it is the one of the official firmware versions from the EVO 4G DESIGN.
It is completely stock Sense 3.0, Android 2.3.4 and firmware version 2.12.651.5, but since I ported this using the same stock base that I use for my DigitalKarmaROM, it has been bumped to Android 2.3.5 and version 4.67
The goal is to offer a completely stock experience(as if you had just activated an Evo4G design from the store) with the enhancements you've come to expect from a rooted rom. think of it in the spirit of Sprint Lover's ROM for Sense 3.0. there are still some glitches to work out but hopefully everything works in the end.
CREDITS
xXxViRuSxXx - Original thanks for porting the first Kingdom to our device and using his resources for refernce
the_plattypus - Huge thanks for teaching me the ways of porting. This rom would not happen or come sooner without his knowledge
Dieselford - for volunteering, wanting to learn and helping with resizing tasks
Mazda - for inspiring me to try porting and he is a porting monster in his own right! HAHAH
TEAM DIRT - for passing around ideas, kicking it, lively chats and the usual craziness that goes on lol

WHATS NOT WORKING

- Friendstream widget logo still a white box
- you TELL me

Disclaimer:
Let Rom settle/screen off for a minute on the first boot before continuing. Beta V3 still has lockscreen and rosie stability issues when loading up, but when everything loads up, it runs like normal. Hope you like!

Yeah dude, that was a major turn off for me to think about buying it. Because I did get the chance to use it once or twice in the sprint store and it was really nice, but the 4inch screen isnt enough! I sound spoiled. Hahahaha... anyway, DK... good work!
WOOT!!! you got my attention. I will be watching this one. I happen to like 3.0 Just wish the quick launch widget would work for it lol

Party rock! Good job man.
A small minor update. Was hoping to get sound or camera at least in v2 but have been distracted with football
Anyway, I resized the English qwerty in the meantime so anyone who couldn't access the far right keys can now log in their Google account and everything else. I'll work on the # keypad, landscape mode and maybe some of the other languages as I go
SD card now works, so you can install some of your own apps and what not. No a2sd yet
Let me know if I can help DK! Congrats my brother! Looking forward to it!

Ok, I got sound working now. You can listen to music, hear and talk on phone calls...youll have to access from lockscreen though, not sure how it went missing from the app drawer...
Mp4 video works well for some, lags in others or not at all. Working on camera later tonight

Please explain in 10 posts or more.
Shouldn't this be in the Development areas or in the official thread?
I will say one thing about AOKP, I clean installed build 5 for the first time yesterday and absolutely loved the customization options compared to CM10. However, it seemed light years behind in terms of stability, speed and overall smoothness of the experience. Then as I was editing my navbar options to add like 7 icons, one of them deleted and I couldn't access the Navbar portion of the ROM options. It would keep force closing whenever I opened that settings area. Reboots and reflashes didn't help. So now I'm back to CM10 and appreciating the stability again.

Did you try an alternate kernel? I'm using the latest leankernel and I've been on the ROM only 24 hours give or take but haven't experienced a single FC on anything, bug with anything(Minus the low audio on video recording and a few minor graphical glitches), or a reboot. I tried the Tablet UI option and went to reboot and it got stuck on the boot animation, but after a battery pull booted fine with the Tablet UI. That was the only boot that I had issues with, the rest seem lightning fast compared to CM10.
Battery life on Release 5 is far superior than CM10 lately. I lost 6% overnight where with CM10 I usually lost 15+%.
I do have a sort of complaint tho. Altering the backlighting settings under Settings>Display>Automatic Backlight>Edit other levels it gives you a minimum of 20 under the screen option where I could have sworn CM10 was a minimum of 1. I'd prefer a lower # that way I could drop down the lighting severely in the dark to save my eyes and battery lol.
Granted I haven't been on it that long but this latest release seems just as buggy if not less than CM10 for me.
(I do want to add that I am a CM10 fan too... It's the ROM that I ALWAYS end up back on after giving other ones a shot. I'm thinking I'll stick with AOKP now tho)
I'm an admitted AOKP fanboy, but it is not as stable as CM10 yet. I've had a lot of random reboots - but typically only when I'm tweaking things. Under normal usage, it has behaved well. Gotta respect the unicorn.

I just realized, how can there be two official builds? There's already an official thread going and has been. Why waiting to start another?

For the auto brightness if you look one up from edit other levels it says Screen dim level which allows you to set minimum of 1.

Great question!
Anyone running it? Has it caught up to our 4.2 ROMs on here like Slim/Liquid/Carbon yet in terms of basic functionality? Build two had too many issues still.

Hey bmc, I noticed in your thread on rootz that in call volume adjustment was still listed as a bug.
I think that was fixed in cm10.1 around the time they switched to caf audio if you're trying to find the patch that fixed it.
I really want to try the auto hide navbar, just waiting for that volume fix.

funny thing is that we are using caf audio as well and still experience it, meaning that something else outside of the audio HAL seems to play a part as well. Still trying to track down what that part is and if any patch was missed for it. Also what I have done to compensate until it is fixed is I have increased the in call volume to be a reasonable level and usable. So although its not adjustable it's at a level that is decent enough for normal use.
