I've searched the forums and have not seen anything quite like my problem, so if I missed an important thread, I'm sorry.
Over the weekend, I plugged my Captivate (using a stock battery) into the official Samsung charger and overnight my roommate semi-dislodged the charger. When I woke up and grabbed my phone it only registered a few hours of charging yet still had almost full battery. Upon rebooting the phone, I was sent into a bootloop. Not at the ROM, not at the Kernel, not even at the bootloader. It goes so far as to show the white loading ring at the center of the screen which never moves. At one point, a thin pink line appears halfway through the screen as it shuts down and reboots, never making it any farther. If I plug the phone in, it will boot normally though it does not accurately report battery levels or charging.
Other oddities: after 5 minutes of a phone call, the phone hard crashes. Not FC's, but just goes black. Upon a reboot, I get stuck into the same boot loop. If I plug the phone into the wall charger without a battery, it will go into the turned-off charging animation and show a 100% charged battery. Furthermore, my other roommate has a brand new i9000 so I tried that battery (again, stock Samsung) and it continues in the same bootloop. I have tried flashing other ROMS and going back to stock, but that does not seem to help.
Other info: I was running OneCosmic's ICS 3.1 with no overclock and light undervolting at the time. It was perfectly stable for the few days until the charger dislodged. I am also out of warranty and am not eligible for a hardware upgrade so repairing my Captivate would be ideal. I also have a usb jig if that is of any use to this scenario.
Has anyone experienced anything remotely like this? If not, what debugging steps should I attempt?
What I would suggest is using one of the ODIN one clicks and flash back to stock

I've flashed back to Rogers 2.2 stock. Doesn't help. It actually made it harder for me to get the phone started though I have yet to make a phone call from it.
Have you had the phone for less than a year? if so call at&t(or rogers) and they'll replace it for you.
then try factory reset
then try using odin or rom manager to flash back to stock
When all else fails, flash to cm7. that will completely wipe everything and start from scratch.
if that STILL dost work.... than you can be sure that its a hardware problem :/ theres nothing you can do except replace and sell for for parts.. sorry
You may want to try clearing the battery stats. Something in there may be telling the phone that the battery is completely dead and it shuts the phone down in the middle of the boot. Just a guess, though.
It sounds to me like the phone might have gotten confused aobut how much battery life it actually has. You might also try getting it loaded up and then letting it drain the battery completely down. Reset the stats and then fully recharge the phone.

I have exactly the same problem, I did the reset of the battery stats and still not working.
Did you solve the problem?
thanks

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, however, no amount of battery calibration could get it to work. Furthermore, a bad flash has made the situation even worse. Now Im bootlooping even when plugged in and when unplugged my jig is of no help. I have declared my Captivate dead.
Best of luck toominds, if you get it to work, let me know. I'd love to have a spare phone sitting around.
This is in relation to my other thread, however I created a new one because the title of there other is no longer valid. I can reboot into recovery and download mode. I have flashed everything that was recommended through odin. Everything appears to be back to stock , however the phone only boots when on the charger. Sometimes it stays booted for a few minutes and sometimes it remains booted for only a second. When it shuts off a blank battery appears with a circle in the middle. I tried a charged battery at verizon and it did the same. It is as if the phone does not recognize the battery. This happened yesterday when I was using gps. It just shut off and the problem that I just explained began.

Maybe just get it replaced? as long as its all stock, you should be fine
I maybe will have to. Is there anyway I can be 100 % sure that it is stock if I cant even get the phone to boot up? When I get into download mode the flash counter is not tripped and it says official. I can not afford to have Verizon charge me 600. Do they just charge you out of the blue without consulting with you?

Bump. Anyone? Donation for anyone who can get me back up and running.
Have you tried the phone with a DIFFERENT battery? Maybe take it to the store and get them to let you use one and if it works I would think they owe you a replacement battery. If it does the same with a different battery then I would get the phone replaced. If the flash counter is not tripped, and it says official in d/l mode I don't think you should have any issues with a replacement.
Kinda lame response but try cleaning the battery terminals. I have had a phone quit working like that and used a pencil eraser to scrub it clean and it worked after that.

I used this method to root, flash CWM Recovery, and unlocked the bootloader.

Everything went well. I then flashed "The Executioner 2" Rom. Again, everything was fine I was running the Rom for about 2/3 hours. All of a sudden, I was texting and boom, my phone turns to a black screen. Keep in mind at this time my phone is at about 18% battery when it happened. I managed to boot into CWM. I was wiping everything like I would if I was gonna flash a rom + go to restore back up. I factory/data wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, BOOM black screen again. Couldn't boot up normally. Tried to get into CWM, no go, just vibrating and black screen. Tried getting into download mode, no go just vibrating with black screen. Now my phone ain't even charging if I have the USB in. It seems completely dead. Any ideas or do I have to tell Verizon I lost my phone?

I have my phone sitting and the charger in. There's no red LED or any battery icon to show that it's charging. You know how normally when you turn your phone off, there's still something that indicates you that the phone is charging when you have it plugged in. In my case, it's just a black screen. It's like the phone is dead?
this happened to me once, it was the battery dead and no led when plugged in or anything. Let it sit on the charger for like 30 mins then unplug it and try to boot it.

Should I try to boot up into custom recovery or download/odin mode? If it's possible I want to fix the brick and just flash my phone back to stock for now. The last thing I want is to have a bricked device. I saved up, sold my Razr Maxx, and paid full price off contract for this phone. Yep, all that down the drain if my phone is bricked. I really appreciate the replies guys, it makes me feel better whether my phone can be saved or not.
I can't remember if it's that rom or not, I look at so many threads but there have been a few reports of major battery drops. Search the thread.

This had also happened to me before, buy after charging it still wouldn't boot normally.
I had to boot into recovery and then select reboot device, hasn't happened since.

My phone won't boot up at all!! Can't boot into recovery, can't boot into download/odin mode either. And now there's no vibration. It seems dead. I didn't do anything wrong, the Rom was running fine. All of a sudden black screen and it started being stupid the way I said in the OP.

Well I would try to get my hands on another battery and see if it will work then. If not and it really just died take it to Verizon and tell them you were sending a text and it shut off. That sound like hardware failure to me.

You wiping it while it ran out of juice for the 2nd time probably didn't help.

I know. At that time I didn't think of the battery, I was just in a panic to get out of the problem.
I think I got somebody to barrow me their GS3 battery tomorrow. IF, the phone lets me boot into anything, what should I do? I don't know which method I should use for fixing the soft brick because there's more than one? I just want to fix it and odin back to complete stock unrooted again.
Reflash your ROM and once it boots up go back to factory rom

Happened to me too..Pretty sure its the battery. When mine shut off, I tried different chargers and nothing.. I tried a combo of things like pulling battery while charging and just leaving the battery out for a couple minutes and then plugging it in till you get a red charging light. When it lights up , let it charge and then restore. Good luck..

I am hoping that it's just the battery being dead and not a hard brick on my phone. I don't understand what happened that made my device do this in the first place? Everything seemed fine. No hiccups when rooting, flashing, ect. I ran the rom for a good few hours. Out of no where BAM, black screen while I was texting?

It misjudged the battery life (ie the percentage was wrong). Then it realized what was happening then shut off the device to protect the battery.

Your phone isn't bricked....your battery is dead.
Let it charge with a WALL charger for at least 30-60 mins. Walk away. Come back, HOLD just the power button until it boots. Let go. Enjoy your "unbricked" device. Why would you want to go into Odin or CWM without even seeing if it boots? A hard brick wouldn't do anything. Just see what happens. If it bootloops or has constant system.ui closes you'll know it. Then go into recovery and either:
1) rewipe/reflash ROM
2) restore functional backup
Please change the title of this thread. You didn't brick. Your battery died. Lol. TW ROMs on this phone have been known to die with 18-23% on the battery gauge. 23 is my number It's happened to a few of us.

I'm having a weird issue that literally just started yesterday. First of all, I didn't do any changes yesterday before this occurred. Anyway, my G3 just started freezing, then rebooting randomly, BUT that's not all! When it tries to reboot, it flashes the LG screen, and SOMETIMES makes it to the AT&T screen....and even, sometimes makes it all the way booted up. But, at any point, it can/will reboot and start the process all over. I read on another site that it could be a battery going bad, but I only trust XDA. So, could someone chime in with some help or info pointing me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance,

same issue i am having ..i thought about the battery thing so i pulled it out and put in a fully charged one and no bootloop..but now 3 hours later and 85 percent left on battery and bootloops have started again..btw other battery was a 20 percent when changed it out for fully charged batt..so im just as lost trying to figure it out

How can I figure out what part of the hardware could be causing this? Is there a diagnostics or something I can use? I've tried factory reset (multiple times), LG Flash Tools to flash previous version, and the strange thing is it may not even make it through the process without restarting again. It's been rooted, but I've never had a problem until this. I never deleted anything.

Not really other than swapping out parts. If using flash tool won't work and it won't go back to stock then it's definitely a hardware issue.
What percent does it get too before rebooting? If 80% that's normal. If before it's definitely a hardware problem.

I can try Flash Tools again. Maybe it just didn't take. I just noticed another thing. When it's trying to boot, if the notification light flash when the LG screen is on, it will load. But, if it doesn't flash, then it will just go black, then flash the LG screen again.

Yeah. It's really weird. It seems to do it less when the battery is charged, but if I get down to 40-50%, it could go into a loop that runs the battery into the red. Also, it seems to heat up around the power button when it's stuck in the loop. And, to top it off, my software update popped up yesterday. I've been anxiously awaiting Marshmallow for a while, but I'm afraid to update because of boot-looping right in the middle and bricking the whole thing. I already have a bricked G2 due to something weird that happened while trying to update to Lollipop. I'm going to the AT&T store today, I think. I'll let you know what I find out. Maybe, it can help you.
Thanks,

Ok. So, first of all, sorry for the long wait on a reply.
I did manage to get through a factory reset, but it still is doing the boot loop. I'm going to take it in to AT&T today. You can see my reply above to see more info. I unrooted everything and factory reset, but it still loops. I think it's a problem with the phone. I may have to go to LG, depending on what AT&T says.
Thanks for the help!

So, final update. I had to go into the AT&T tech store. I was having the random boot loop for about a week, then, on Saturday, I got the Demigod green screen. I had went in the day before and ordered a new battery, but I couldn't find any information on the green screen error. I took it in and they immediately (after checking for rooting) replaced it (warranty). They said they had never seen/heard of this screen. They had to actually Google it to see if it's attached to rooting. (It's not) Anyway, so I'm back in the saddle with a brand new phone. ?

ok so my g/fs g3 just started doing this. updated to mm about 3 or 4 days ago. was doing fine. haven't changed anything software wise. completely stock. no root.
what is really odd is that it doesn't loop when plugged into a power source. take it off the charger= insta loop ...
hoping a rom might solve the issue but from the sounds of the replies maybe that isn't the case.
any help greatly appreciated. i've not owned this phone myself or i would already have it rooted and custom recovery..
is there even a root method for MM? recovery?
i'd love to see if its a software issue. the phone worked swell before the update...

Hi everyone, i know the title seems like it's just a trival matter, but trust me it's not.
The phone was bought new in August of last year (2015).
The story so far: I've been using sultanxda ROM for over 6 months without any issues, but i decided to test a different ROM, so i downloaded Darkobas rom and GAPPS, the ROM and Gapps installed fine but when i started the device and i was doing the initial configuration the phone rebooted by itself. It happened about 3/4 times and after that the phone had entered a bootloop. I tried to reflash the ROM and gapps, but the phone was restarting during the flash in TWRP. I decided to go stock Cyanogen OS, so i did a clean fastboot install of cyanogen OS. Everything went well the phone was working fine, but a few hours after installation the phone was randomly rebooting again, i decided i'll live with it and wait and see if it goes away by itself.
The phone was rebooting 2/3 times a day, during different acitivities so it was hard to pinpoint what might the issue be (even when locked in my pocket with all apps killed). After a few days of usage it just went straight to bootloop, after that i had issues to even install a rom (even via fastboot), because it would install everything fine and then it wouldn't start properly and would be in a bootloop (straight after installation).
I also tried the Bacon Root Toolkit installation as well as formatting everything and wiping everything. But even with the usage of Bacon Root Toolkit the random reboots happened.
So i installed an older TWRP recovery, i wiped everything re-formatted the phone to F2FS (was EXT 4 b4) and installed a F2FS compatible ROM (can't remember which one), after that installation everything seemed to work fine, but after a day or so the random reboots came back to haunt me again. So i reformatted the phone to EXT-4 again, installed stock cyanogenmod via fastboot (the 4.4.2 version), and updated it to 6.0.1 via OTA (during the course of a day or so, but even when the phone was on 4.4.2 i had a random reboot once), and the reboots returned ( i tried many different solutions, even the command line in TWRP "make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p15"). I had NO IDEA what might be causing them but i thought that maybe the processor is ****ed and it's overheating, i returned to sultanxda rom (with the underclock to 1957 mHz).
After returning the phone booted correctly after a clean install via TWRP, but now it's rebooting again, and sometimes it happens 4/5 times in a ROW, sometimes it doesnt even reboot, but goes to black screen and I have to push the power button for 6 + seconds for it to reboot.
I've tried the stability test, or running antutu a few times in a row to verify if maybe it's the processor's/RAM's fault, but the phone didn't care, it rebooted randomly (sometimes 6/7 antutu runs in a row and nothing happened, sometimes rebooting in my pocket with all apps shut down). I've tried different launchers/messing with WiFi options/turning off the proximity check/turning off the trust agents nothing seems to make a difference. At this point I'm at a loss of what to do so i came here to ask for any advice. Is there any way to check if the phones internal memory is corrupted in some way ? I've tried searching for some apps but nothing turned out.

Your phone battery is dying...replace your phone battery and all the problem will go away....random reboot a couple of times and then goes straight to bootloop is a sign of a dying battery....trust me i know this cause it happen to me before and i'm sure you have the same problems....
this problems will get worst when you can only boot into your rom while your phone is connected to the charger and goes straight to bootloop when you disconnect the charger....

Shouldn't the battery meter go crazy after reboots or something ? Well i guess i'll try this, the battery is not a costly component. Are there perhaps any bigger batteries than the original one with bigger backs ?

Nope...the battery remains like normal but random reboot will happen more regularly until bootloop....
Not sure if there is a bigger battery but there is one thread here that show one battery with 3600mAh and don't buy OP2 battery as it is not compatible with OPO...

Ok thanks for the help, will report back with new battery.
Switched the battery, the random reboots still happen, decided to do a clean flash, after wiping the phone in TWRP during the flash of GAPPS the phone rebooted itself and is in a boot loop currently.
Ok so the reboots stopped, it was a battery issue, but now i have a problem with battery indicator it's stuck at 50 % all the time and the phone does not show when it's charging (no information, no LED color), but the battery is being charged because when i shut it down and connect the charge and battery level (which shows when the phone is off) increases.
I've tried to use it untill it shuts down then i charged it while it was off for 6 hours, but after turning it on it still showed 50 %. I've also deleted the batterystats.bin using TWRP but it still did not help. Any ideas how to make it show the correct % ?

told you it was a battery issues but look like you have another battery issues here...try disconnect the battery from the motherboard for 1 minutes before connect it again and do offline charge for atleast 30 minutes....after 30 minutes reboot the phone and look at the battery percentages...if its goes above 50% then you have solved your problems....if it doesn't then you might bought a bad battery....you need to contact the seller that sell you the battery and asked for replacement....
Well unfortunately after changing the battery for a second one (the random reboots started again on the new one) the issue still prevails, so i'm currently writing a ticket to oneplus in hopes of some help.
Thank you iPusak Gaoq™
