I used this method to root, flash CWM Recovery, and unlocked the bootloader.

Everything went well. I then flashed "The Executioner 2" Rom. Again, everything was fine I was running the Rom for about 2/3 hours. All of a sudden, I was texting and boom, my phone turns to a black screen. Keep in mind at this time my phone is at about 18% battery when it happened. I managed to boot into CWM. I was wiping everything like I would if I was gonna flash a rom + go to restore back up. I factory/data wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, BOOM black screen again. Couldn't boot up normally. Tried to get into CWM, no go, just vibrating and black screen. Tried getting into download mode, no go just vibrating with black screen. Now my phone ain't even charging if I have the USB in. It seems completely dead. Any ideas or do I have to tell Verizon I lost my phone?

I have my phone sitting and the charger in. There's no red LED or any battery icon to show that it's charging. You know how normally when you turn your phone off, there's still something that indicates you that the phone is charging when you have it plugged in. In my case, it's just a black screen. It's like the phone is dead?
this happened to me once, it was the battery dead and no led when plugged in or anything. Let it sit on the charger for like 30 mins then unplug it and try to boot it.

Should I try to boot up into custom recovery or download/odin mode? If it's possible I want to fix the brick and just flash my phone back to stock for now. The last thing I want is to have a bricked device. I saved up, sold my Razr Maxx, and paid full price off contract for this phone. Yep, all that down the drain if my phone is bricked. I really appreciate the replies guys, it makes me feel better whether my phone can be saved or not.
I can't remember if it's that rom or not, I look at so many threads but there have been a few reports of major battery drops. Search the thread.

This had also happened to me before, buy after charging it still wouldn't boot normally.
I had to boot into recovery and then select reboot device, hasn't happened since.

My phone won't boot up at all!! Can't boot into recovery, can't boot into download/odin mode either. And now there's no vibration. It seems dead. I didn't do anything wrong, the Rom was running fine. All of a sudden black screen and it started being stupid the way I said in the OP.

Well I would try to get my hands on another battery and see if it will work then. If not and it really just died take it to Verizon and tell them you were sending a text and it shut off. That sound like hardware failure to me.

You wiping it while it ran out of juice for the 2nd time probably didn't help.

I know. At that time I didn't think of the battery, I was just in a panic to get out of the problem.
I think I got somebody to barrow me their GS3 battery tomorrow. IF, the phone lets me boot into anything, what should I do? I don't know which method I should use for fixing the soft brick because there's more than one? I just want to fix it and odin back to complete stock unrooted again.
Reflash your ROM and once it boots up go back to factory rom

Happened to me too..Pretty sure its the battery. When mine shut off, I tried different chargers and nothing.. I tried a combo of things like pulling battery while charging and just leaving the battery out for a couple minutes and then plugging it in till you get a red charging light. When it lights up , let it charge and then restore. Good luck..

I am hoping that it's just the battery being dead and not a hard brick on my phone. I don't understand what happened that made my device do this in the first place? Everything seemed fine. No hiccups when rooting, flashing, ect. I ran the rom for a good few hours. Out of no where BAM, black screen while I was texting?

It misjudged the battery life (ie the percentage was wrong). Then it realized what was happening then shut off the device to protect the battery.

Your phone isn't bricked....your battery is dead.
Let it charge with a WALL charger for at least 30-60 mins. Walk away. Come back, HOLD just the power button until it boots. Let go. Enjoy your "unbricked" device. Why would you want to go into Odin or CWM without even seeing if it boots? A hard brick wouldn't do anything. Just see what happens. If it bootloops or has constant system.ui closes you'll know it. Then go into recovery and either:
1) rewipe/reflash ROM
2) restore functional backup
Please change the title of this thread. You didn't brick. Your battery died. Lol. TW ROMs on this phone have been known to die with 18-23% on the battery gauge. 23 is my number It's happened to a few of us.

Okay, so i had Infused 2.3.0 (i think that was the number, it's the latest one anyway). I followed the instructions to the T. I had no issues.
About 3 or 4 days later i woke up and my phone had 1% battery. I sent a text, and then locked the phone. I came back to plug it in, and tried to see if it had any battery. None, it was dead. No biggie. I plug it in, and i get the circle loading thing. Then the battery symbol appears (charging). Then the phone goes black and the circle loading thing appears again. Then it keeps restarting. and going back to the circle loading thing. Over... and Over... Then i tried charging it for a while to see if the battery was just really low. No dice.
I put my girlfriends battery from her infuse 4g and it had 90%. Did the same thing. Circle loading thing, restart, circle loading thing, etc. Then i tried to put it into recovery. No dice, it would just keep restarting. Sometimes the Samsung logo would appear, and then it would just restart samsung, black screen, samsung, black screen, then eventually back to the circle.
I got it in red recovery ONCE, i was able to scroll down twice, and then the phone restarted. I couldn't get it back into red recovery.
I thought i had bricked my phone somehow. So i tried to use GTGs unbrick. I loaded it up fine (i'd done it with my girlfriends phone before to restore it to stock). It took me about 15 tries to get it into download mode. It was in download mode for long enough so that the program recognized it, and it started the download to restore it, then the phone turned off.
Now the phone won't even turn on. I can't put it in download mode, i can't put it into recovery, i can't get it to do ANYTHING.
What the hell did i do? What caused the original issue?

Ok well first of all it is not Infused 2.3 it is 2.2.3. Anyway that is not the point, did you have juice defender installed? I do not think it could have done anything, but maybe. What is the latest app/tweak/anything you installed? Finally, have you tried holding both volume buttons and power button when trying to turn it on? This problem you are having seems extremely odd. Try plugging it in.

2.2.3, thanks. I was too lazy to look it up. No, I didn't have juice defender. I used Lookout, that's all.
The latest thing I installed was the 2.2.3 update for Infused. I updated Pandora, and that's all.

Yes. Won't turn on.
Well, best thing you can do now is see what ATT can do about it. The worst that can happen is they say they can not do anything, which you then can keep trying the ultimate unbrick over again. This helped someone on an earlier thread.
Same thing happened to me. Take the battery out. Make sure USB cable is unplugged. Hold down both up and down volume buttons plug in USB into ur phone and PC and put battery back in. This will put you in download mode and it will stick do u can return to stock. Good luck

What rom were you using?
They're replacing it. No questions asked. The phone wont turn on. So they said its a hardware failure
The guy was really nice. Didn't ask me if I did anything to it
He tried everything I did. Download mode. New battery. Nadda
got my replacement today. all is well. now to root
So my phone shut off yesterday due to loss of battery power.
However, when I went to charge it, it would not charge when it was off.
IE: The battery picture with the "goo" in it that fills as it charges.
So since it wouldn't charge I was stuck at the a bootloop at the logo. Not animation.
Luckily my buddy at work has a Bionic that I was able to stick my battery into and charge. If not for that I would have been screwed.
Now I know I have personally a MILLION posts due to this problem and I'm wondering.
Who else can't charge while the phone is shut off? Is this due to CWM on boot? Our modded ROM's? If this is true for you, are you rooted? Stock ROM? CWM on boot?
We should really find a way to fix this. We need to be able to charge while the phone is off. This would save a lot of people headaches. Thoughts?

You CAN charge in this situation, but it is a real PIA, and you have to really keep playing with it until you get the sequence correct.
It is a little dance like this:
1) power off.
2) take the battery out.
3) plug the phone into the wall socket, not a usb computer connection, with the battery out!
4) HOLD the power button to turn the phone on
while the dual core screen comes up, hold the power button for a very long time, and the phone will eventually shut off.
5) put the battery back in the phone and put the back on, the phone may try to power on again, and you may have to due 1-4 all over again, or you can HOLD the power button for a VERY long time again until it powers off.
Now if it turns off, you should see the white light come on and that means it is charging.
Note the timing is key and you may have to play around to get it exact, because two of the different exchanges of my phones each had a slight different sequence to make it work.

Not sure, I have never tried it. I have however done what I have mentioned during a boot loop MANY times now, and never had an issue. Once you figure out the EXACT steps it takes, it just becomes second nature. Oh and like I said, it can be just slightly different even between two different A2s, but it is only like a millisecond here or a slight step there, that is different, or maybe when the battery goes in and or comes out of the phone...
I can assure you though that it does work to get you a full charge before a flash after and during a boot loop.

Good to know. I have a family member with the same phone, so when I kill mine and need to flash I just steal her battery for a few minutes.
So this happened to me again. Accidentally let the phone discharge. Not to worry, I'm not bricked. But now again I'm gonna have to charge my phone battry on my buddies bionic. BUT WHY WON'T OUR PHONES CHARGE WHILE THE IT'S OFF?
I shouldn't have to be paranoid if my phone dies.
I guess I never really got an answer to my OP, while I got it reconciled, it'd be nice to have an answer.
In GB, if your phone was off (powered completely down) you could plug it in, and the screen would come on with the battery that had the goo that would fill up as it charged. I seem to have lost this capability ever since I have rooted and started running custom ROMS. WHY?
So, four questions remain: Why is this happening? And is it happening to anyone else? If you're unsure, can you test it for me (see if your phone will charge while off) and most importantly. HOW TO FIX IT?
It's a little infuriating.
I've never had this happen to me. I know that's not helpful in your circumstance. My phone will shut off at the '0% battery level' and I can plug into my wall charger or USB to my laptop, and goo I get. I'm wondering if its your charger? The Moto chargers seem to be a little on the shoddy side. I've replaced all of mine with other non-Moto wall chargers. And as you know, if you're completely out of juice, USB may not have enough current to charge it back to full. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the thoughts mate, but it doesn't matter what I try to charge it on? Will it charge for you no matter what ROM?

Ok I am going to answer this finally, for you....
The battery screen with the "goo" is a "boot hijack", we have stolen that ability to use it for CWM/bootsrtap and it's boot hijack replaces it. YOU CAN NOT LET YOUR PHONE FULLY DISCHARGE. When you get to less than 10% find a place to start charging it, or turn the phone off until you can connect it to a charger.
Sometimes we have to rob peter to pay paul, and in this case we "stole" that ability to get to CWM on a boot with either bootstrap and BP tools, or the J.Y.Daddy hack, but either of those steal this same boot hijack "space".
PERFECT JIM! Thanks man. I just wanted to understand why it was doing it. Thanks so much! Although that doesn't explain why Apex is able to charge lol. I figured since I was stock(ish) ICS that it wouldn't matter? Although I did use bootstrap to flash Altered's carrier remover zip. And maybe Apex is completely stock.
EDIT: I grabbed my buddies bionic to stick my battery into to charge, and his is rooted running a custom and they use safestrap as their recovery, however when his boots up, it boots into safestrap and then starts charging with the goo.
How come Bionic can do it and we can't? WAH!
That's interesting. Any idea why I don't have any problem from a full discharge-to-shut off and charge problem? I've not done anything that anyone else hasn't, I mean, I rooted, installed the bootstrap, J-Y-Daddy CWM, flashed myself silly, edited "this" and "that" and tweaked "these" and "those". Never found myself not being able to charge after a shut down...
Edit: I'm running Lithium v.1.3.1
Edit #2: Knocking frantically on wood! Hope I didn't just jinx myself!

You probably have something with the logwrapper and boot hijack link that is not fully correct... that is what actually does the boot hijack.
Here is where we started to think about this whole thing, just so people can see how we got to where we are with these hacks... yes this is quite old..

Good question, I am not really sure.. you are kind of the odd man out possibly.. I have had the battery after dead charge scree too before too with the boot hacks, and other times not so much... I think it has to do with how the hacks are done and the order they are all done in. I am not totally sure what that order is though.

It's interesting how they have it and we don't. Hmm...

safestrap is a little different.... I know I did the OG mods to make it work for us back in nov/dec. It uses a different hijack method, and we can't use that one on our phone, and thier recoveries don't work on our phone.

By the way folks, with the release of our spiffy new recovery (Thanks whirley and Luk!) This thread is no longer an issue. Since the battery monitoring had been removed for the boot hijack with the bootstrap.apk we could not charge with the phone off.
NOW, I tested it and we can. Apparently the removal of the battery monitor was not an issue with the new recovery. HOORAY! We should have no more people complaining about dead batterys!
I had this issue this morning and I thought my phone had bricked at first since I installed SCv7 late last night. My phone shut off at 3% and it would not allow me to charge it and it would not turn on at all. I tried Jim's method a few times; did not work for me. I am on SCv7 ICS, rooted, and I do have Bootmenu installed. I went and bought another battery today, which I was going to do soon anyway; and Im going to buy a battery charger on Amazon, just in case. Im not quite sure how to fix it, but as long as I have an extra battery, I will be okay.
Are you not able to charge while off? That issue has been resolved with the new recovery. What does it do when you try to charge it?

Can Anyone Help Me...Yesterday I Accidentally Try to Restore A Custom Rom On My DINC 2 ,While The Battery Was Low...The Custom Rom I Was Trying To Restore Was ArticICSed RC1.Everysince Then I Can't get a Charge. Plus On Top Of That..I Powered Down To Recovery Mode( CWR) ..and I Did A full wipe/cache/dalvick/bat stats. after that i rebooted back up and it flashed my splash screen..then the custom boot animation...then it went to htc logo screen...then to the set up screen...but i didnt set up...i booted back down..now im getting nothing but the custom rom animation screen....and then it goes black screen while the orange noticication light is blinking...when you plug in the usb cable to charge the led light is stable. i cant get any charge what so ever...i can boot down...i can boot to cwr..i can boot to hboot and all of that. i can reboot...but after i pass the splash screen and get to custom animation screen it just hangs and the screen goes black. should i buy another battery to jump start it and flash another rom? or buy another usb/charger cable to see if that's the problem? i dont know anymore. i had the phone on charge all night...still red light indicator...what can i do?
Have you tried completely wiping it again since you stopped the process mid-stream the first time ?
From CWM recovery:
1) Wipe data/factory reset
2) Go into Mounts and Storage :
Format/System
Format/Cache
Format/Data
Under Advanced wipe the others in Advanced Dalvik/battery for s***s and giggles. Fix Permissions
Reboot.
I feel for ya dude, hope you can get it up and running.
Help!!!! Accidentally Try To Restore Custom Rom While Battery Was Low!!!
I appreciate The Info That You Submitted. Right Now At This Moment I Can't Boot Up...Because The Battery To My DINC 2 Is Completely DEAD!!!! My DINC 2 Won't Charge...I've Tried.. Nothing. I've Been Everywhere Even Verizon Retailers To See They Have A Battery In Stock so I Could Purchase To See If I Could Get Back Running Again to See If I Did Any Major Or Minor Damage..I Hope And Pray I Didnt.
Im Thinking Why I Cant get Any Charge..Is Maybe I'm Stuck Between CWR ..I've read somewhere In This Forum if That's The Case...My Phone Is Not Gonna Charge anyway..So In The Mean Time I'm Down And Out Until I Purchase a Battery For The DINC 2..Ive Seen One On Ebay with The Dock Wall Charger with It...So Im Gonna Purchase It 2morrow ....If Anybody else have any ideas ..feel free to share..im Very gracious and Humble for every and any info u can give me...again ..i say Thank You!! God Bless...
Afaik if the battery won't charge, then inserting a fully charged battery won't help either.
You might try to connect it to Knoppix-System and flash it from there, (Sry, but I don't know how exactly to do this with DINC2) but you will probably have to send it to where you got it from and pray for fair repairing costs.
bummer

Incorrect. The phone is not bricked. The OP has stated he is able to get to hboot, and recovery. The OP's best bet is to either get an external charger, or borrow someone else's FULLY charged battery, and reboot into CWM. Once there, wipe data/factory reset, and your cache partition. Once that is done reflash the ROM and let it finish this time. After this is done, and you've gone through the setup, perform a NANDROID backup using CWM.

Right, had a similar problem with my sensation;
The battery died during flash, many android devices will not charge their battery until the phone is almost fully booted. As I had no Rom I could not boot with the 10 seconds battery charge I get before boot animation loads. I don't think it charged in HBoot or CWM recovery at the time, new recoveries allow charging. Using another device to charge your battery or wall charger is your only hope (except for new battery), luckily for me my girlfriend let me use her Evo 3D to charge my battery. Unfortunatly she won't let me root it
Any way, try the points I stated

HTC Sensations discharge while hot, by sending unused power to a plug it doesn't have to circulate and end up back in the battery, therefor cooling the circuits.
If I helped hit the thanks

Yes...I Followed Each And Everyone Solutions...Got a Brand New.. Battery ...and did all my wipes/dalvick cache/fix permissions and ran a nandroid backup. and restore the rom i was trying to flash. I Did all of that...Booted Up...Then all of a sudden i'm getting drains (battery), The new battery that i put in had 61% of life. So I plugged in my charger to my DINC 2 while it was on...and i've noticed that the battery was charging,,,but not charging increasingly but decreasing by increments. So I noticed This and i unplug The Charger from my Phone and I Powered down (off). I plugged the charger back to my phone...so i started to charge the phone while it was off. so about 30 minutes went by..i unplugged the charger from my phone, powered back up....i looked at the battery icon...and the battery life went from 61% to 50%...Is This Normal... Now I'm Back to square one...My Battery (NEW) is DEAD AGAIN....I Try To Charge It...All I'm Getting Is Orange Blinks Off And On....Can Someone Tell Me What's Going On,,,,Is Their a Fix For This...If Not...I might Have to Unroot and try to get me another Phone..I Dont Want To Do It...Right now I See No Hope...I've just Ordered 2 more 1500Mah Li-ion Batteries and a External Charger from ebay..It ll b Here Sometime This week...Can Someone Help or have any suggestions...Im Open to any responses...Thank You!!! I am running CleanROM 2.1 with the CleanKERNEL and AOSP Blue Mod Theme on my GS3. It is overclocked to 1.70Ghz .It has been working great for the past 3 days or so I have had it set up like this. I took the OTA before re-rooting and reunlocking and before ever putting any ROMs on the phone. I had the phone on my car charger on my way to work this morning, after draining a bunch of battry streaming F1 practice. When I got to work, I pull the phone off the charger and we inside. When I went to check my phone, it was black. And still is. The phone was working fine while on the charger, but now I can not get it to respond to anything. I have tried to reboot, reboot to recovery, pull the battery, and have it plugged in. The only thing happening is the phone becomes warm while plugged in.
I have no flashed anything for 3 days or so. I don't know what could have happened. Any thoughts?? Please help. I am kinda freaking out right now.

So you pulled the battery out, then put it back in. Then held volume up, the home button and then the power button?
What about Odin mode? Volume down, home button and the
power button?
Make sure to unplug the phone while doing this.

This happened to me a few times but with a slightly different scenario. If i tried to power up my phone, it would give a brief vibration and then show me a battery sign with a big 0 on it (green battery image). No matter what i did it wont boot up. And my battery wasn't at 0% when it happened. I was able to get into recovery and restore a backup.
In your case, check if there is any power in your battery (or borrow someone's who has an s3) and see if you are able to boot into recovery.
Hope you are able to fix it. Good Luck.

Then it might be your battery as the other person mentioned. The bettery is either bad or the device is not charging it. Have you tired different chargers as well? It can even be your charging port...
Odin mode and recovery have nothing to do with your ROM when you boot into them. If you boot into that, it boots before loading your Rom.
Go to the Verizon store and just ask if you can try their battery from the demo unti or something if you do not know anyone else with an S3.

There is guy coming in later today with a GS3, I will try his battery when he gets here. I know I was at 99% battery when I pulled it off my car charger. But, I suppose it is possible the battery is fried.
My bet is battery. Put it on the charger for 10 minutes.

Don't want to sound like a broken record, but have you tried keeping your power button pressed for 5-10 seconds? Its weird but the brief vibration I got in my case was when I had it pressed for a good 5-7 seconds and then nothing would happen. Just checking if you have the same symptoms.

Yeah, I have held it for 1 minute+. I am really lost on what could have caused this. It seems to me, and my uneducated mind, it may be a hardware issue. I just don't know what or why.
I just got home from work, still with no luck. I guess if I can't get life into it, Verizon can't either?

This is kinda where I am at. I feel like it is a hardware problem more then a software problem aka not my fault.
So what was the final outcome on this?
This happened to me a few weeks ago. I had my GS3 for about a month. Everything was stock. Never rooted or unlocked.
Its a hardware issue.
If you return your phone to Verizon they will give you a refurb.
I believe the phone gets sent to Verizon not Samsung. Since I wasn't rooted it didn't matter for me, but since you can't even boot into ODIN at the store they won't be able to tell that your phone is rooted so they will order you a refurb straight away.
Its possible that when it gets to the Verizon testing facility they will discover that its been rooted and expect you to pay full price for the replacement. I have no idea.
Good Luck
Sorry for not updating. I ended up getting a replacement phone from Verizon. Looks like some other people are running into the same problem.

So about 2 weeks ago, i rooted my phone and flashed over the nightly version of CWM. Ran fine for about a week, afterwards i noticed a big battery drain. Then started the freezes, and finally the random restarting. During this time, it would commonly get my battery percentage wrong( Ex: It would say 20% but then die. I would turn it back on and it would say 5. Take out the battery, put it back in, and it would say something like 12%.) Yesterday, i had about 20% left, and it just turns off. Wont turn back on. I get home, plug it up, and its in a charging screen boot loop. Plug in-Go to charging screen-Turn off-repeat. It will do that repeatedly, as long as it's plugged in. I've looked it up, and it looks like it's the SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) and that Samsung can only fix it under warranty. The problem is, I didn't get this through a carrier contract, i bout it basically new online. Any help? Anyone have advice on how to fix it, or what to do?

Can you still boot into download mode?
Doesn't sound like it's dead, but something weird is going on. Anyway, Odin back to stock and see if your problem persists. This could very likely fix it.
If it does still persist, I bet Samsung has a way to track the serial or imei number to tell how old the phone actually is and when it was activated. I'd call them up anyway and see what they can do.

Once you're in download mode all you have to do is flash a tar file of a stock Rom through Odin, it's located in the development stickies.
