Speaker volume - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else's speaker very low? I was watching a YouTube video and I can barely hear it. I played the same video on my note 2and it's much louder on my note 2. Is it just my phone or is the speaker that low?

yup, its pretty low volume, not stereo sound like the nexus 7 FHD with fauxsound app, hopefully i can get fauxsound on this nexus 5
only app that seems to work for me is DFX pro player, it makes the mp3s pretty loud, using it with franco kernel r12 with headset boost option
youtube/movie files volume is very low still
i don't use my headphones, only speakers so i really need LOUD speakers

If you use Google Music it'll be louder. My youtube volume is super low too, and is aware of it and working on a fix. Lets hope it's in the next month or so.

I play music when I am at work and I have the volume maxed and it still is super low.

mine is load as anything.... look up adam outlers tread.. there seems to be glue blocking the sound on some models... he drills into the speaker chamber to let sound from the back of the speaker eminate from inside the phone...

Same issue as OP.
Read the link above.... but i really open the phone if its the glue thats blocking it. Can this be rma'd?

I know I am resurrecting an old thread but I don't recall the speaker being this bad when I was on kit kat or lollipop is that possible? Running Marshmallow currently and the speaker is piss poor. I can barely hear callers. I don't care about listening to videos or movies I have a bluetooth speaker for that it for phone calls it's horrendously low. I installed the "volume boost for nexus 5" from the play store, rebooted to recovery to flash the zip and it made ZERO difference for phone calls however other sounds are louder. Would going back to an older room matter?

me too. i just picked up a nexus 5 and updated to miui8, tried nougat and stock MM, all have very low call volume. nougat being the worst, even now. im talking to people i swear they get quieter and quieter until almost un able to hear them then it just bursts loud again (when on calls). when playing music/youtube/mp3s/pandora its terribly quiet.
i have a note 2 LTE also as the OP posted and on my Note2, (even with out boeffla sound enabled) its way louder.. sure note 2 with boeffla (eargasm eq enabled) its bloody loud.

Does the volume of this device seem very weak to you?

Same with stock 2.2 and bamf gb. Volume seems much weaker than my previous droid, droidx and evo?
I don't think it's weak. I can hear the ringer when I am 2 floors above the phone in my house, music is nice and loud too, no complaints here. Although I know that others say the same thing as you, but for me personally, I think it's fine.
I agree the volume is very weak. I am coming from an original droid and the volume on that was nice and loud. Never had a problem hearing the ringer, music or movies on it. Now with the TB I constantly have the volume turned all the way up and still can't hear it sometimes.
I thought this too. My wife was complaining her TB volume wasn't loud, so we tested it against my Eris and the Eris was drowning out her TB

Yea, the volume sucks.
I have an app called volume+ its [email protected]$$ and works great bit you have toto be on.ginger for it to work

didn't do anything for me? I'm on bamf gb too
i'm running stock.
and i actually think the volume is quite loud. music plays pretty loudly, especially with kickstand out for the speaker. in fact, i turn it all the way down during a call, and people next to me can still pretty much hear the entire conversation (when holding the phone up to ear).

Are you saying that when it plays through an external source that it isn't loud enough?
yes i think they may be talking about external sound.. i came from droid 1 and its much louder i think than the TB either way idc cause its still louder than all my friends iphones hehe.
volume flat out isnt good at all... motorola droid 1 was wayyyyyy louder than this.. I shouldnt have to install Volume +.. Even though I already have it, didnt make that much of a difference.
yea for those of u wanting louder volumes get volume+. works amazing. requires gingerbread though

No not at all. In fact I think it's one of the louder devices. Might wanna make sure your media volume is up. I find that everything sounds weaker if media volume is down.
I run CM7 personally and under the CM Settings change the sound volume to 10dB and it makes the phone so loud at the store I am at that everyone turns to look lol. Work in a 58,000 square foot retail store.
Comparing it to an og droid is kind of silly. Droid has one of the loudest external speakers. I find the tbolts speakers to be... A bit low, but not too bad. I generally have my phone on vibrate, and use headphones with music/ video, which seem fine to me.

[Q] Is There Any Way to Make Headset Volume Louder?

Hello everyone!
I got the S III a few days ago and so far I'm pleased with it. I rooted it yesterday and got rid of the Verizon crapware and it's even better! I do have one issue though. I often listen to music in my car, and for that I usually use my phone. I'm having an issue with it being to quiet though. All of my other phones and tablets have been loud enough, but the S III is just barely audible when I'm on the highway even on full blast. Is there a configuration file or something I can edit? I'm also wondering if it has something to do with the "Loud music may harm your hearing if you listen to it for a long time" prompt.
Thanks for any help!

That doesn't help me, I don't even have the galaxy 553 or whatever.
You could use Volume+ in the Play Store. Many GNex users used that for their lower than normal speaker.

I just tried it. It did nothing to the volume level. Neither quieter or louder.
I take it there's no way to do it?

That prompt appears to be only a benign warning - happens when you have a plug in the headphone jack and then raise the volume beyond a certain point.
This phone's playback volume is good for me using the headphone jack in the car, for what it's worth.

I've been searching to solve this issue as well. Try awesome beats http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1819353 (note: I just made a nandroid backup and flashed the zip and it works) in the awesomebeats app I set bluetooth tab(assuming bluetooth headset) I set beats boost enable and moderate, enable equalizer: preset: vocal boost, loudness compensation: weak or strong. It seems to make an improvement unless I'm just experiencing a placebo effect.
Just search volume+(volume boost), on play store a simple app to boost volume

Ok, so I really thought this would work, but once it hits a little over half way volume level (or the point where it starts saying loud music may harm your hearing), and I try to turn it up, it doesn't get any louder. Seems like it just increased the gain. Thanks though.
I'll try awesome beats next, I just don't need the bass so loud, I already have a subwoofer in my car. ^^
Volume+ is what you need I use this myself and it definately works, make sure to go into each of the settings speaker, headphone, bluetooth and check off audio modifications and use custom eq settings then slide your eq settings up. play around with the settings to get best balance. Bottom slider is volume boost.
I use my GS3 in my car and I don't have a problem. I run it through a horrible fm transmitter and it is still loud enough. When I plug it in at first it cuts my volume in half due to the headphone safety setting which I can't find to turn off. It was an option on my Droid Razr. I'm running the synergy rom on my phone. You can try messing with the equalizer settings depending on what you play your music through that should help. but it sounds like a problem with your radio or your aux cable you are using. Try it in someone else's car or a different cable.

Thank you for sharing, it is indeed an improvement.
I'm just trying to find out whats draining my battery now though. Seems the "Phone" application has began to drain battery life, but it may just be a coincidence.

It's my setup. I'm using computer speakers and an inverter with a subwoofer to listen to music. It's all good now though. I found a great solution.

Earpiece quality?

Does anyone have some information about the earpiece quality?
On the Nexus 4 the quality was very low as on lower volumes interferences from the wireless signal could be heard. Also i don't like phone on which the lowest volume is still much too loud.
Any experience would be very appreciated.
No we dont have any information. The phone isn't even in peoples hands with the exception of media sites.
Just wait until you receive the device and conclude for yourself (or wait for others for a full-review)
Mine's in my hand. The earpiece quality is excellent, it's very loud and clear, the best I've ever encountered!

Got my phone right here.. Already have it for like 6 hours (has been shipped today)... Did not test the headphone output yet...
Sound quality is excellent through earphones..Plenty loud..Im pretty impressed with the speakers to..More bass and clarity than the N4.. Turn the volume up on Dead Trigger 2 or listen to some dance music and you will see what i mean.
Ok, thank you very much for your answers :good:
I'm only interested in the earpiece volume. It's nice if the speaker is loud enough but i don't want the earpiece on low volumes too loud. Even more i like it if it's very quiet for on the lowest levels as i'm not all the time in a noisy environment.
If the earphone output is also quite low on the lowest level i'd appreciate that a lot. I had troubles with every Android phone so far, except the HTC One X+, beeing too loud. (And don't start a flamewar. Some people can't get it loud enough and some like phones who are able to adapt to the ambient).
Hi,
Can you tell me if you can control the volume with a wired headset ? (much like the iPhone... and unlike my Nexus 4)
Thanks !
Mine has stopped working...still makes a sound when maximising the volume but I cant hear anything in a call.
Is the Nexus 5 compatible with HD Voice on T-Mobile USA?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
not as bad as N4
When on a call on the call volume is low you can hear a faint distorted signal. It kind of sounds like the phone is working on other tasks in the background more than a distorted signal to me. It's faint but kind of annoying when you realize it. The N4 was worse though.
Has anyone else noticed this is or is it just me?

[Q] HBS730 + Sound Playback = No Muting Audio

Hey Folks,
Having an odd one with my new perfect nexus 5. I use the LG HBS730 BT Headset and while I play any sound I am unable to fully mute the audio. I tried lowering it via the volume on the phone and headset. It lowers but not mute it fully, the low volume is still pretty loud.
Anyone else tried this? Works perfect on my old phone as well as my iPad, when I lower it fully it'll mute but not on my nexus.
Thoughts?
Btw tried it with Google Play Music and YouTube, same issue.
The HBS730 is loud as hell on its lowest setting. The 700 is normal. The reason it is so loud on the Nexus is the Bluetooth is now linked up volume wise. The problem is the 730 not the nexus.

Its not about being loud my issue, its the fact that i am unable to mute the audio. I can do this on an HTC One XL, S4, and iPad.
With the Nexus, i cant mute it.

I could mute mine on 4.3, but not 4.4. Like I said, the OS in 4.4 now links up Bluetooth Volume level to the media volume level. This leads to it being unable to be muted since you can't turn down the volume past the lowest the headset offers. The closest thing you can do is pause, but that's it.
FYI, I have 2 HBS730's, and a HBS700.

Any fix? I am using an equalizer as a workaround but it's kind of inconvenient. The equalizer app sometimes got killed and then the volume jumps (and so do I)!
I have this headset and I love it. unfortunately I have the same problem in that even on its lowest setting its pretty loud.

[Q] why my phone's speaker volume is low?

I bought nexus 5 a month ago. from then i don't know weather this is the problem or the volume of speaker is built low. i am getting very low ringing volume . while on cal its loudspeaker volume is very good and while on head set volume is also very good. only problem is while ringing a cal or while playing music via loud speaker the volume is below average. i went to service center they just took one more nexus 5 which they had(that one was other customers phone which has a software bug) and compare it with that phones speaker that phone is also giving same volume. but i have read reviews that its speaker has very good sound. and it has around 65db sound. my friend has iphone 5 it has 68db which sounds very good(while ringing). but mine with less just 3db difference is not even half i think. i saw in internet lg released an hardware upgrade so that speakers can be changed is that correct? how can i fix this?
This is a well known issue.
You can flash this zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532788
There are a few other methods as well. You can also look at viper4android or faux sound deal.
I use the sound file called sedna..with no fixes I can hear it clear across the house even without full volume.

You`l have to root to increase loudness, read the first 4 threads in the General section first first first first and don`t use toolkits
It isn't a defect, all of them are pretty quiet. I just flashed franco kernel and used his app to boost the speaker volume. It's almost too loud now...the lowest setting was the highest one before.
